And another update on my geek collection (in English, not sure how I wrote the last one..).

Well, my inlaws stopped by the other day with a box full of old Nintendo stuff. Amongst which, a brand-spankin’-new NES! Yes it was in plastic and all. So who cares if it were the Spanish edition I had a good time unwrapping it and setting it up. After some startup-issues, most likely related to the games I tried which had been sitting in a box for about 2 decades, it seems to be in great working order now. Here’s a photo report of my personal unpack-party:

In the box, I also found:

• 3 Game Genies, 2 sealed
• 4-player Gameboy Adapter (heaven knows why)
• NES Advantage Controller
• Extender cables for NES controllers
• A bunch of 3rd-party NES controllers
• Gameboy-snap-on light
• Action Replay
• Gameboy amplifier
• Car adapters for the Gameboy

.. all in all, it’s kinda amazing to think how much money I spent ‘back then’ on buying that stuff..

Kävin tänään noutamassa paketin postista. Kiitokset Hobby Pointille nopeasta tilauksenkäsittelystä – maanantaina lähetettyäni tilauksen sähköpostilla, soitettiin liikkeestä puolen tunnin sisään ja vahvistettiin tilaus. Paketti ilmeisesti meni suoraan postiin, sillä se oli perillä jo keskiviikkona.

Sitten itse asiaan! Laatikko näytti tältä:

Sisällä olivat tavarat siististi järjestyksessä.

Puuosat ovat esileikattuja laserilla, neljästä erivahvuisesta vanerista. Lisäksi mastot ja laudoitukset olivat valmiiksi katkottuja. Jossain vaiheessa yksi kansilaudoista oli taipunut, katsotaan myöhemmin tuottaako se jonkinlaisia ongelmia. Epäilen että ei.

Muoviosat olivat levyissä. Pienet puuosat, kuten plokit olivat kupari- ja messinkiosien kanssa omissa rasioissaan. Purjekangasta tuli siisti rulla, tässähän pääsee ompelupuuhiinkin vielä jossain vaiheessa. Keulakuva sekä peräpeilin kotka tehdään siirtokuvina.

Ohjeistusta oli myöskin mukana kiitettävästi! Ohjekirjan saa ladattua osittain myös pdf-muodossa Billing Boatsin kotisivuilta. Piirustuksia ei tosin netistä löydy.

Viikonlopun aikana tai ensi viikolla ehtinen tutustua ohjeisiin ja materiaaliin tarkemmin.

This morning WOMWorld kindly sent over the Nokia N900! Much excitement aside, I won’t be writing much in this post; I’ll leave the video and photos to speak for themselves.

Hopefully you’ll be on a broadband connection as there’s tons of live pics of the N900, the box contents as well as an unboxing video shot in HD.

P.S. All photos captured by the Nokia N82 (Digicam way too memory hungry and it’s so much more  convenient to bluetooth pics over to my pc).

I needed some extra storage space, so I decided to purchase an external hard drive.
However I wanted to avoid all extra power cables, and a bulky device which is hard to carry around.
Regular external hard drives are mostly built to be placed on a desk next to your laptop.

Therefore I preferred the portable hard drive solution. Portable hard drives are powered via the USB cable/connection, and they are designed to be easily carried around (small size, low weight).

The product that I finally went for was a Verbatim 500GB, the Executive Arctic White edition.

Here is a quick list of the specifications:

Dimensions: 135mm x 85mm x 25mm
Weight: 163g
Interface: USB 2.0
Operating System: Win/Mac

It is advertised to have a 25% improved data transfer rate.
I guess I will have to test that under large file copy operations.

It also comes with a two-year guarantee, hope I won’t need it.

Hot on the heels of the Motorola Droid, the friendly people at Verizon sent me an HP Mini 311-1037NR review unit!

It’s a netbook with an Intel Atom N270 processor, NVIDIA ION graphics, and an 11.6″ screen. Of particular interest to me is the Gobi radio from Qualcomm (built-in WWAN) which supports both EVDO and EDGE/HSDPA networks…

The Mini 311 is rather large for a netbook – even the Acer Aspire 1410, a regular notebook with a similar price, yet more powerful hardware, is slightly smaller and thinner. I recently wrote:

I think current netbooks are too big and bloated – 11.6″ screens and full keyboards are great but how about smaller packaging? To me, older netbooks with 9″ screens are still the ideal in terms of system size and weight.

Although my notebook of choice (and primary computer) is my MacBook Air, I sometimes prefer something smaller and cheaper to hit the road with… Enter the netbook!

I’ve owned (and hacked) several over the years, from the original Asus 701 (Eee) to the Toshiba NB205 (Mini), which I just retired. This time around I wanted something with better performance and a larger screen. Based on my past experience using (and modding) the Acer Aspire One, I decided to purchase a sapphire blue Acer Aspire 1410-2801 with an Intel Celeron SU2300 dual-core CULV processor and an 11.6″ screen.

It’s just semantics, but while being thin, light, and affordable, the Aspire 1410 is not marketed as a netbook. That’s fine by me, because I think current netbooks are too big and bloated – 11.6″ screens and full keyboards are great but how about smaller packaging? To me, older netbooks with 9″ screens are still the ideal in terms of system size and weight.

The Aspire 1410 is missing Bluetooth, but I’ve picked up the appropriate module, which I’ll install soon. In the meantime, check out my unboxing pictures
