The Dinosaur exhibit was a hit with the kids. The Gems and Minerals exhibit was the favorite among the adults.

What stood out to me the most was the Konovalenko: Gem carvings of Russian Folk Life (click on the link to see some of the awesomeness). It was a gorgeous display of art and my photographs didn’t capture the beauty. All of the sculptures are made from different minerals and stones.

Yana also had her first movie experience and got to see Under The Sea 3D at the IMAX. She loved it – well it was a little too 3D for her and after the underwater snakes were in her face, the goggles came off. She enjoyed the rest of the movie on my lap, goggle-less.

these kids did a lot of walking for being two years old. they were having so much fun.

Yana was so good the entire time that she got a dinosaur from the gift shop. We named her Tracy the triceratops.  It was a fun trip with friends that ended with an awesome Mexican dinner.

3 Bad Men

I’m sure everyone had seen movies they wished would last for hours and hours. “Under the Sea 3D,” written and directed by Howard Hall, was one of them because of its great ability entertain and enlighten. In just a span of forty minutes, the deep sea documentary was able to capture lives of sea creatures ranging from small harmless fish, creepy sea snakes, turtles that love to feed on venomous jellyfish to rare sea dragons and cute sea lions in New Guinea, Indo-Pacific, Southern Australian waters. The movie was also able to comment on humans’ impact on the environment. However, it didn’t feel heavy-handed because the focus was really more on the animals and how they depended on their respective habitats (and vice-versa). What I liked best about this film was its ability to create suspense by creating danger for certain animals. For instance, in one scene the innocuous creature was the cute-looking one that you just want to pet but in a few minutes, it turned out being the predator with an amazing speed in terms of capturing and swallowing their prey whole. The film’s technique of turning our expectations upside down made the movie consistently interesting and engaging. It was unpredictable in the best way possible. I even caught myself thinking “What’s next?” with such enthusiasm. I felt like a little kid again who just had his first lesson in grade-school Biology. The living things under the sea were so magical-looking (to say the least), it sometimes reminded me of “Finding Nemo,” especially the coral reefs. I thought it was amazing how much the creatures relied on each other in order to survive. Concepts such as symbiosis, mutualism and commensalism were illustrated nicely, especially how one of the crabs used a jellyfish as “a hat” (as Jim Carrey, the narrator, puts it). Although they were quite simple concepts, the way they actually worked made me feel like everything had a purpose. “Under the Sea” was also one of those movies that made me feel humbled. I couldn’t believe some of the creatures existed even before the age of dinosaurs. Realizing their resilience and effective hunting techniques, it made me want to learn more about the different creatures–creatures that are thriving now and those that are not thriving now but might thrive in the future. I think this is a great film for kids because not only did it have bright colors and strange-looking animals, it was able to educate and inspire. I wish I saw it in the big screens (IMAX or 3D) because it was already stunning on television.

When March comes in like a lion, it goes out like a lamb. The old English proverb could not be more perfect. Within the last few weeks, my area has been hit with Snow, Rain, and Sunny weather. The same thing could be said about this month’s DVD releases. We had some hits and misses along the way. Nonetheless, we got some good clean fun entertainment coming at you!

For the final days of March, this week’s movie picks will follow an international version of “Idol”, a coming-of-age drama set in 1960′s London, a steampunk twist of an literary detective, and a trip to the oceans in the third dimension.

MOVIE PICKS OF THE WEEK

In Afghanistan you risk your life to sing. After thirty years of war and five devastating years of Taliban rule, pop culture is beginning to return to the country. What a great month March has been but can April follow in grand style. We’ll find out – until next month, Happy Movie & TV VUEING!

“Under the Sea 3D” was released in February 2009, mainly aimed at children, to provide an immersive (literally) experience of ocean life.  The idea is that children will sit down, legs swinging in their seats excitedly, throw on their 3D glasses, and be plunged into an educational journey with narrator Jim Carrey.

While reeling them in with images of turtles snapping, sharks swimming past their faces, and sea lions popping off the screen to kiss them on the forehead, Jim will also give them a lesson about the importance of conservation and caring for our fragile environment.  They’ll take this in, surprised to learn that we–humans!–could be the reason for the death of frolicking fish families and pretty sea horses.  They’ll leave the theater scared straight, aware of the responsibility we have to our planet.

Not quite.  I, for one, was not expecting a Thursday morning spent with what felt like hundreds of thousands of 3rd graders.  Nor did I expect a twenty minute line at the ladies’ room surrounded by pigtailed 9-year-olds, but that’s a different blog post. While the children were admittedly cute in their starched uniforms, unable to touch their feet to the ground, 3D glasses gigantic on their tiny faces, I was also starting to realize that the next 45 minutes would not simply be educational–it would be loud.

I’m not sure I heard Jim Carrey speak at all.  The lights went down, the credits started rolling, and the children started to chatter, awestruck by the names and titles that seemed to float right in front of our faces.  Once we took the dive into the depths of the ocean, all hell broke loose– there were screams as sharks brushed past, and as giant squid darted out to catch their prey.  There was jumping up and down, there were little hands grabbing at the fish and reaching out to touch the coral reefs.  There were excited squeals of “Sea lion!  Sea lion!” only to be indignantly corrected with, “That’s a seal, Manuel.“  Children spilled out into aisles, stood on chairs, clutched each other, and nearly tumbled into the next row in their efforts to get closer to the animals.

While the antics were overwhelming at first, we quickly realized that embracing the situation was the only means of survival.  And after a few minutes under the sea, we started reaching out to see if we could catch the fish, too.  We’ve all seen movies that were made for kids and can appreciate them–but seeing them in a theater with children is something that is a rare opportunity for many of us (and for me, something I typically try to avoid). It became so much more about seeing their reactions– the delight, the wonder and amazement, the terror at times– and much less about what the film overtly had to say about the state of our planet and the danger it’s in.

Perhaps no one walked away with a greater understanding of global warming or the endangerment of so many species of plants and animals.  But the reminder of childhood and the delight of discovery is a powerful thing, and can often be more memorable than the facts alone.  Seeing the depths of the ocean, close enough for us to touch, was a lively experience–but seeing the reaction of a theater full of 3rd graders was what really made it come alive.

“Normally there’s some sign; a dilation of the animal’s pupil, an increased movement of the gills…something that gives me a clue,” says Howard Hall, who after a lifetime of diving believes he’s able to anticipate a fish’s behaviour.

The impracticality of “directing” such unwitting film stars is an everyday challenge for California-based Howard and Michele Hall, who are just completing their latest IMAX 3D film, Under The Sea 3D – the product of more than five months of underwater work in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Great Barrier Reef and southern coastline of Australia.

Diver and underwater photographer Mark Spencer, a regular AG contributor (A Solitary Life, AG 86), was part of the team involved in the August 2008 Great Barrier Reef leg. His job as “launcher and recov- erer” was to ferry the hefty camera between boat and ocean floor for film changes.

“We would take one or two scooters [underwater propulsion vehicles] to re- cover the camera and tow it back,” Mark says. The process of raising the camera out of the water by crane, changing the film and lifting it back into the ocean took about 40 minutes.

The four-member film team – two cameramen and two technical divers – spent an average of two hours under water for each three-minute sequence. The day they filmed the stonefish, they were immersed for six hours. Fish such as the potato cod were better ‘talent’ because, curious by nature, they had no fear of swimming right up to the camera.

“They also wanted to get a shot of turtles eating jellyfish,” Mark says. “While that wasn’t amazing in itself, it looks really good in IMAX.

“Howard explained to me that the ideal 3D effect was obtained when the subject was about 0.75 m from the camera. It cre- ates the illusion that it’s off the screen: right there in front of the viewer’s face.”

Under the Sea 3D is due for release in March 2008.

*A truly fascinating adventure into the depths of one of the last frontiers- the SEA (imagine that). It showcases a wide variety of absurd creatures and presents a number of issues about how global warming is messing up our wildlife. It’s 3D so it’s even better and Jim Carrey narrates it so that’s kind of weird. At any rate, I give it a “go see it!”.
