Living in Central Florida, has been like living in a Third-World State–

No employment, No Help, and No hope for our kids!

After moving my family to Florida 12 years ago, while I split my time between several states and 2 countries making deals. I’ve seen my business income undermined by foreign competition, and almost all of my retirement savings go down the tubes when theWall St.bubbles all burst during 2007-08. And now, at 60, suffering with a bad back and other health problems, I find myself shuttling betweenJerseyandFloridato make a pittance in order to keep a roof over family’s heads. During the 80’s I was healthy and single, and could be working 3 jobs at any given time, and I did it well. My best year was 1986, the only year my annual earnings actually exceeded $100k. plus what I made off-the-books! Then I got married and the kids started coming down the chute, I sold my Harley, and began to slow down, or suffer the consequences that comes from not spending time with your family.

Today at 60, I find myself applying for a job, I’m asked to submit a detailed Resume with References, along with a background check and drug screening, all for $30, 40, or 50K? No! –for a job paying Minimum Wage to 8 F’n Bucks an hour!

More critically important, my 24 year old son, who has been in jail a couple of times, now home for over a year, can’t find a job anywhere, imagine- turned down by Mc D’s. So many have been quick to point out to him how getting in trouble was all his own fault, and all of the shoulda’s and coulda’s of his past. Fine, He realizes all of that very well, and paid for it, even now, but where does he go from here?

Being relatively young, inexperienced, and unemployed, he becomes distraught, angry and frustrated, and at times severely depressed. At the breaking point, he and his contemporaries lash out at family and society, along with generally poor opinion of the American society. When you ask them to be patient, they ask “how long, a month, 2 years?” Trying to do the right thing by going to school, persevere the endless application process, or take crappy day-work, on or off the books when available doesn’t always get the bills paid. You can take courses and pick up new skills, but your application still gets tossed into the ‘circular file’ because of a police record. Yet you still don’t have any way to feed your family, or to pay the rent and court fines incurred while in jail. Yes, Ex-offenders are assessed a daily charge for their room and board. And to compound the problem, when you get out, and can’t make a payment, the State suspends your Drivers License, further impeding their ability to earn a living, and adding a $300 License Restoration Charge to your problems! Can the State rig the game any further for failure?

If an Ex-offender is lucky- they at least have some measure of support from family or friends that offer them a place to sleep at night, a place to do the laundry, and a meal. Many others remain on the street, with no money, no home or family, hoping for a break, and some hoping they go back to jail, to the Only structured environment they know, and the Cops Standing-by-ready and willing to accommodate them back into the Can! For people with incarceration in their past, Florida, among other States, has become a Third-World country, complete with corrupt government officials, and Yes some crooked cops! They’re repaving roads and building homes everywhere, for whom? -People are filing for Chapters 7, 11 or 13 in record numbers. Florida is starting a new Lottery every other month, raising taxes, with homeowners are having trouble keeping up with the increasing homeowners insurance rates. Yet no money for public projects, or employment programs of any real significance ever materialize. What they do find is “lip service” on the News or the One-Stop Center. Their Job Applications are filed away or thrown out, or doors slammed in their faces. Again, where do they go from here? How does this story end?

And now-“My Page, My Rant” . . .

Following up on my other posts . . .

Decades ago the Federal and State governments, community action and church groups, and local businesses together tried helping by starting public projects and programs to get people working, even cleaning the streets with a poker-stick, or polishing the municipal brass gave the newly re-employed a grin with pride! Heck, some courtrooms even had a military recruiter on Speed-Dial to offer an alternative to a jail sentence, literally giving a fella’ a fighting chance! Now it’s all gone, the economy is in the public crapper, and you can’t even get a job to clean it, unless you have a Degree listed on your Resume, and have an Uncle in the business!! Any public or private sector cash that might have been available has now vaporized to is earmarked for a few extra cop-cars, thanks in part to 8 years of “Bush, Version 2.0″ and his Republican Washington piss-heads spending like mad-men, building-up a war over Phantoms, and Bush V. 3.0 in Tallahassee who did Nothing at all! Then we have the Wall St. P.O.S’s like Bernie “Made-off” who did just that with Trailer-Loads of Cash from public and private pensions funds the US Treasury. Together they all took our treasury and economy from a balanced/surplus budget in 1999, to a more than $5-TRILLION deficit, and even worse Now! Since 2000 the price of Gas, and Groceries have Tripled, so has the Unemployment and Public Assistance Roles, All Thanks to that song an dance group: Georgie. Jeb, and the Republicrats! Today they blame this, and all the public ills on President Obama, [This topic is a different Rant altogether, please stay tuned]

Through bad politics, bad government deals, and outright bad corruption (yes-Good Corruption does exist), the Republicans past and present have in effect SPIT(or substitute your own verb) on the American people in general, and our Young Americans in particular.

Our children are supposed to be the our future, inheriting this world, and it’s future. But as in many a dysfunctional family, their inheritance is being squandered by the federal and state governments before they Drop-Dead! Mind you, as our GI’s return from their assignments, and rejoin their families, what do you think is in store for them? Many will start or wrap-up their college education, and move-on, a very large number of them may not have the opportunity. Therefore, unless US employers have a great need for Army Rangers, Infantry, weapons specialists, F-16 and Gunship Pilots, several thousands of ex-military will be the ranks of our sons and daughters that were mentioned in the paragraphs above, and basically “Sht Outa’ Luck!”We need to Dump all the politics and the special interests into a ditch, get together on one all-encompassing “Special Interest” program with the US Public and Industries, and take a few Private and Public Sector Billions each year to work for us, and subsidize putting people back to work-Now? Help Industries to initiate programs to reduce the roles of public assistance recipients, with Jobs and Educational opportunities. The money is there, all of it!

Working, Education and Training, share the Top spot of the list- The unemployed and displaced worker, returning Serviceman and woman, and the Ex-Offender all have families, bills to pay and the right to earn a living!. All Men and women who can work, must be allowed the opportunity to go back to work, and be Paid a fair wage. Am I being simplistic in my wishes, Yeah-OK! All I can do is Yell!- I know that waving the magic wand won’t make these things happen, but that’s what our great business minds and Think-Tanks are supposed to be for, to disseminate the problems, and formulate and structure the solutions, and then directing our elected officials onto the right track to implement and oversee those solutions. None these problems can be fixed overnight, politicians, special interest groups, and the ACLU will fight Tooth and Nail against parts of such a grand vision. Our Representatives as a Whole, must Do the “Right Thing” for once. They’re all aware of the our nation’s ills, and have access to advise and resources . And if they don’t, Vote the Schmucks OUT! I’m tired of our society being stepped-on and subsidized by Welfare, and covered up with BullSht!

Our collective problems need to be addressed Today-this year, not just mentioned in passing, and maybe a few dollars budgeted in dribs and drabs 10-15 years downrange! Money that’s used to put people to work, rebuilds self-respect, it allows them to pay their bills, maybe buy a new TV, or a car. This money stays in the USand gets recycled right back into Our economy, and allows businesses and our nation to grow. Everyone wins. Afterwards, we can all attend to topics like Global Warming and disappearing wildlife and ozone layer together. Copy, Paste, and Spread this Rant around, yell at a politician, Wake the people up!.
