I have finally resolved the problem with Youtube not accepting the videos for Dead storm Pirates and the UNIS booth – convert them to AVI files. Unfortunately they become blocky and lose detail so I will be trying to find another way to get the better quality versions online soon. In the meantime…

Dead Storm Pirates (Namco) – I was surprised to see this game at IAAPA – we hadn’t heard anything about it possibly coming over to the US although it seemed like the style of gameplay would be a nice fit over here. The software was 60% complete so there were only a couple of levels to play but it was a lot of fun. There’s also more to it than being Let’s Go Jungle with a pirate theme, Namco is taking the time to help the game stand out on it’s own. The emphasis on shooting the targets at the same time is greater and if you both can keep your sights together long enough, the shots become more powerful. Another exciting part of the game I saw is when you man the cannons to blast another ship out of the water – hopefully there will be a few more scenes like that in the final release. Also the rudder wheel feature is pretty cool, with the game presenting you with so many seconds to turn the thing for a pass or fail event. In several wheel events the game goes into “bullet time”, slowing down just enough so you can attempt to turn. DSP is running on Namco’s System 357 hardware, which is PS3 based and is the same hardware used on Tekken 6 and Razing Storm. As such the game looks spectacular but unfortunately due to the uploading issues I have had with getting this on Youtube you won’t notice those details as nicely.

Universal Space booth – We broke the news about UNIS bringing Cooking Mama to arcades and I have noticed that a number of blogs have picked up on that news but unfortunately only one source gave us any credit for that (so we tip our hat to them GameSetWatch). Such is the nature of the blogging biz I suppose. Either way, one detail that needs to be emphasized about the game is that it is available in the US right now – and I already saw it’s appeal to younger kids. When I was posting the IAAPA pics at my arcade, a girl who was about 8 or 9 years old saw the picture of Cooking Mama and asked if we would get it saying she would play it all the time (right after my brother was saying that no one would play it).

Overall I was happy with the UNIS booth because there was a number of different and new ideas there that other companies don’t have.

One of those was Butterfly Garden – which is an interesting return to the tabletop game with four players. You control a net and you attempt to capture as many butterflies as possible. It’s another cutesy game that is something different. They had a couple of virtual bowling games which were fun and I was also impressed with Panda Family, a party game by IGS that uses a face avatar feature. There are a number of mini-games to pick from and movement is controlled by large buttons. The cabinet is really nice and this is one I wouldn’t mind getting for my arcade.

Of interest to Panic Park fans they also had a game called Ultimate. The control scheme works exactly like Panic Park does where you play tug-of-war on the controls in each mini-game. I was very impressed by the price on this one – only $4600 for a game with a 46″ screen. I couldn’t get a good feel for how the mini-games played in it however as you really need two people to get the full effect.

Big Buck Hunter Pro: Open Season – I got a chance to check this out but where I am more familiar with Big Buck Safari than I am Hunter, I couldn’t notice the differences in the update off the top of my head. I do know that there is more focus with online play via the Coin-Up network, like they do with Safari. I also found the mini bonus games to be a little more entertaining than what is in Safari (they even have an Asteroids bnous round, not sure if that is new or not)

Textminator – Strangely enough this game is attracting all sort of attention on various tech blogs all of the sudden, even though it has been out for a while. This was the first time I had a chance to play it myself and while I am not a texting person by any means, it was a decent game. Words fall from the top and you have to text out what it says before the word hits the bottom. One thing that could hurt the appeal to this is how many cell phones are converting over to full keyboards, making the old way of texting out-of-date but still, this is something unique and the cabinet catches your eye as well. The pads are interesting – it’s like using a payphone pad but it seems like they should hold up to the normal pounding found in your average arcade.

(AndKai) Am 3. November starteten die Bildungsstreiks in den Universitäten in Deutschland. Die erste Besetzung fand in der Uni Heidelberg statt, heute sind über 50 Universitäten in Deutschland besetzt. Auslöser für die Bildungsstreiks war folgender Aufruf aus Wien:

Liebe Studentinnen und Studenten in Deutschland,

in Österreich sind die Unis besetzt. Wir sehen die Notwendigkeit, euch persönlich darüber zu informieren, was hier im Moment passiert, da in den Medien nicht vermittelt wurde, dass diese Proteste etwas Neues, nie Dagewesenes sind. Dieser Protest wurde in einer völlig spontanen Solidarisierungs-Demonstration begründet, keine Studierendenvertretung oder Partei hat diese organisiert, rein aus dem Bewusstwerden der Bildungsproblematik heraus ist er entstanden und gewachsen. Diesen reinen Kern, diesen Motor, spüren wir hinter Allem, was hier geschieht. Die Studierenden aller Studienrichtungen haben sich spontan – ohne übergeordnete Organisation – zusammengefunden, um gegen die Studienbedingungen zu protestieren.
Das Ausmaß dieser Aktion ist der Beweis dafür, dass es sich um zentrale Anliegen handelt, die alle europäischen Studierenden persönlich betreffen. Wir protestieren, anders als es die Medien darstellen, zwar auch gegen die Entscheidungen der österreichischen Regierung, aber vor allem sind wir grundsätzlich mit europaweiten Tendenzen wie der Ökonomisierung der Bildung und der Entdemokratisierung der Bildungsinstitute nicht einverstanden. Dies sind länderübergreifende Probleme, an deren Lösung wir als Studierende nur dann beteiligt sein werden, wenn auch europaweit protestiert wird.

Der Wille zur Selbstbestimmung der Studierenden und der Lehrenden ist ein zentrales Element dieser Bewegung in Österreich. Deshalb wurden Hörsaäle besetzt, in denen nun lebendige und konstruktive Diskussionen stattfinden, an denen sich alle Studierenden jederzeit beteiligen können. Es ist wichtig, dass nicht nur protestiert wird, sondern dass Diskussionsräume jenseits öffentlicher Institutionen und etablierter Plattformen geschaffen werden. In Österreich ist das bundesländerübergreifend bereits passiert. Die Diskussionen und Proteste hier werden anhalten und die Studierenden in Österreich warten auf ihre deutschen KommilitonInnen, um gemeinsame Probleme offenlegen zu können.

Am 05. November findet ein internationaler Protestag statt, als Warm-Up für eine Protestwoche unter dem Motto “Education is not for Sale”. Die Studierenden und SchülerInnen in Österreich unterstützen diesen Tag mit einer Großdemonstration. Wir unterstützen jede/jeden einzelnen Studierenden, in Deutschland, in Europa und darüber hinaus, der mit seinem Bildungsystem unzufrieden ist.

Leider wurden in den letzten Tagen schon 3 Universitäten polizeilich geräumt.

Die Aktionen sollen gegen die Missstände im Bildungssystem demonstrieren. Über 270000 Schüler, Studierende und Azubis sind seit Juni 2009 zu Demonstrationen auf die Straße gegangen, um gegen die unzumutbaren Zustände im Bildungssystem zu demonstrieren. Trotz dieser großen Zahl hat sich bislang noch nichts verändert. Deswegen wird es morgen und in den nächsten Tagen wieder zu großen Aktionen/Demonstrationen kommen.

Auch ich halte das derzeitige Bildungssystem für veraltet und schlecht.

Da ich als Schüler nicht genau über die Zustände in deutschen Universitäten Bescheid weiß, schreibe ich meine Meinung über die Bildungspolitik/das Bildungssystem an deutschen Schulen:

In den Schulen wird viel zu wenig auf den Einsatz moderner Medien gesetzt. Oftmals liegt dies auch daran, dass es den Schulen an den nötigen Mitteln dafür fehlt, aber auch an der fehlenden Prioritätensetzung der Schulen und der Bildungspolitiker etc.

Desweiteren sind die Lehrpläne mittlerweile völlig veraltet und nicht vereinbar mit den Anforderungen der heutigen Zeit. Dies liegt auch daran, dass diejenigen, die dies ändern könnten, alle selbst schon nicht mehr die Jüngsten sind und deshalb nicht die Chancen der heutigen Zeit erkennen.

Weitere Ansätze wären eine Veränderung des Stundenrasters (jedes Fach immer blockweise in Doppelstunden, wodurch die Lerneffizienz verbessert werden könnte und die Schüler nicht so viel Arbeitsmaterial mitschleppen müssten als für 6 unterschiedliche Fächer) sowie eine frühere Fächerwahlmöglichkeit für die Schüler (Beispielsweise schon in der 7. oder spätestens in der 9. Klasse), da die Schüler bis dahin ihre Stärken schon kennen und sich weiter spezialisieren könnten, um später ihren womöglichen Beruf besser ausüben zu können.

Es gibt also einige Dinge, die unser Bildungssystem sehr verbessern könnten, allerdings müssen wir die Politiker etc. dazu bringen, dies auch wahrzunehmen.

Deshalb rufe ich alle Schüler, die die Möglichkeit dazu haben, auf, sich an Demonstrationen zu beteiligen!

If you’re familiar with The Sultan and this site, you’re already well aware that he is no fan of Mr. Lane Kiffin.  He never thought that Kiffin deserved the Tennessee job and The Sultan still believes that the “Mouth of the South” will eventually be the “Rocky Top Flop”.

It was reported during last night’s Tennessee/South Carolina game that Lane Kiffin continuously flaps his gums in order to model himself after Steve Spurrier.  What a load of horse you-know-what.  Steve Spurrier is one of a very small handful of coaches who have the persona and the gusto to say what they want, when they want, and not give a hoot what anyone says.  Duplicating the ol’ ball coach’s personality and style is like finding a needle in a haystack.  A very large haystack.  Note to Lane Kiffin: be your own man and your own coach.  Model your tactics after the greats, not your mouth.

The Sultan could publish an extremely long post explaining his distaste for Lane Kiffin, but that’s not the point of this column.  Yesterday was full of intriguing match-ups on the college football gridiron.  First of all, major props need to be given to the Oregon Ducks.  After their self-implosion in Week 1, the waterfowl have moved themselves into serious BCS and possible National Title considerations.  And as much as The Sultan hates to say it, as long as Oregon keeps winning, the strength of Boise State’s resume will continue to rise.

The Sultan was personally interested in the Tennessee/South Carolina contest.  He has known that Tennessee has great talent and potential, but poor guidance and leadership.  The Sultan has also been enjoying the South Carolina Kool-Aid.  In his opinion, the Gamecocks deserved a much higher BCS and AP ranking heading into last night’s game.  They owned a 6-2 record, which featured two painful losses.  If you rewind the tape, Spurrier’s squad was about three plays away from being undefeated (a game-ending, goal line stand at Georgia, and a pick-six and poor redzone performance at Alabama).  This is the time of year that Carolina has notoriously started to struggle.  Remember, it was two years ago that the Gamecocks were #6 in the country before losing at home to a lowly Vanderbilt team.  What ensued was a free-fall back to mediocrity.

The Sultan believed this year would be different.  USC had been able to pull out close, but respectable wins against Kentucky and Vanderbilt, and a Thursday night win against then #4 Ole Miss.  Along with learning experiences in Athens and Tuscaloosa, this squad was young but tough.  If they could rack up wins against Tennessee and Arkansas, the Spurrier led Cocks would be holding an 8-2 record and home field against the mighty Florida Gators.  All of these propositions and possibilities are now out of the window, and South Carolina will be fighting against their patented tailspin for the next month.

Here’s why the Gamecocks couldn’t build on a possible successful season: Halloween and visors.

The game was played in Knoxville.  A place where USC has won only once in the past 29 attempts.  To top it all off, Little Lane unveiled the Jack-O-Lantern uniforms in Neyland Stadium, much to the excitement of fans and players.  For some reason black jerseys transform teams into machines, unless you’re the University of Georgia.  This momentum caused early turnovers which put the game away before halftime.  It’s virtually impossible to come from behind on the road, especially in the SEC.

But the main reason South Carolina lost this game was not because of the players on the field, but because of their coach’s attire on the sideline.  Steve Spurrier was wearing a hat.  That’s right, a hat.  The man known for slinging golf styled visors around the bench was covering his graying locks with a plain, white hat.  The picture, either physical or mental, baffles the avid fan.  Look back to two weeks ago.  The Gamecocks entered Bryant-Denny Stadium to the gorgeous sounds of The Million Dollar Band.  As they came through the tunnel to boo’s and a sea of crimson, they were led by the “head ball coach”.  What was on top of his head? A hat. USC was embarrassed last year in The Swamp.  A game that Spurrier circles on his garnet and black calender every season.  For this huge game you would think he would go back to his roots.  Show his true style and intimidation.  Nope.  He wore a hat.  Yes, The Sultan knows that Carolina lost this game by not protecting the football and failing to stop the bleeding, but karma is a powerful thing.  So are superstitions.  From now on The Sultan will never be comfortable with USC’s chances if the man known as “The Visor” is wearing a hat.

Hey Steve.  Please, for the love, replace these laughable hats and dust off that old visor.  Your team needs it.

„Together Strong“: Die neuen Unterrichtsmaterialen über die UNO wurden von Außen- und Unterrichtsministerium sowie dem Informationsdienst der Vereinten Nationen vorgestellt.

Es war eine Pressekonferenz der etwas anderen Art. Im Wiener Gymnasium Rahlgasse präsentierten Außenminister Michael Spindelegger, Unterrichtsministerin Claudia Schmied und UNIS-Direktor Maher Nasser am 20. Oktober die neu erschienen Unterrichtsmaterialen über die Vereinten Nationen.

Der Unterrichtsbehelf für Lehrer mit dem klingenden Titel „Together Strong – Die Vereinten Nationen“ wurde anlässlich des Vorsitzes Österreichs im UNO-Sicherheitsrat im November und des 30-jährigem Bestehen des Vienna International Centers von Außen- und Unterrichtsministerium gemeinsam mit dem Informationsdienst der Vereinten Nationen entwickelt.

Offene Fragen und kluge Antworten

Spindelegger, Schmied und Nasser standen dieses Mal aber nicht nur den Journalisten Rede und Antwort, sondern auch den interessierten Jugendlichen. Im Rahmen einer kurzen Diskussion in einer 4. Klasse beantworteten sie genau und ohne Abweichungen die mit kindlicher Neugier gestellten Fragen der Schülerinnen und Schüler.

Angefangen vom Thema Weltfrieden über die Arbeit im Sicherheitsrat bis hin zur Atomwaffenproblematik reichte das Spektrum der offenen Fragen. Zukünftig sollen genau diese mit Hilfe des Lehrbehelfes ab der 7. Schulstufe in den Fächern Politische Bildung, Geschichte und Sozialkunde, Geografie und Wirtschaftskunde, Bildnerische Erziehung und Deutsch geklärt werden.

Interaktiver Unterricht

„Wenn wir heute in Schulen unterrichten, so arbeiten wir immer auch an der Welt von morgen. Unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler sind es, die bestimmen werden, in welche Richtung sich die Welt entwickeln wird“, so Unterrichtsministerin Schmied. Angepasst an den österreichischen Lehrplan finden sich im Unterrichtsbehelf verschiedene Lerneinheiten, die über Entstehung, Ziele und Struktur der Vereinten Nationen informieren.

„Mithilfe dieses Materials können österreichische Schülerinnen und Schüler einen ersten Schritt in die Welt der Vereinten Nationen tun“, unterstrich Informationsdirektor Nasser. Außerdem versucht „Together Strong“ speziell die Rolle Österreichs in der UNO anzusprechen und zur verantwortungsbewussten Auseinandersetzung mit Problemen und Herausforderungen unserer Zeit anzuregen. Mittels Daten, Fakten, Arbeitsblättern sowie einem Quiz und einer Simulationmöglichkeit des Sicherheitsrates kann dies auch interaktiv in den Unterricht eingebaut werden.

Zwischen Klassenzimmer und realer Welt

Unterrichtsministerin Schmied, UNIS-Chef Nasser und Außenminister Spindelegger stellen das neue UN-Buch für den Schulunterricht vor.

2.700 Exemplare wurden bereits an interessierte Schulen in ganz Österreich versandt. Für Außenminister Spindelegger ist das eine wichtige Aufmerksamkeit für die Vereinten Nationen, die sich gerade in einer Renaissance befinde.

„Gerade die Themen die Jugendliche besonders interessieren – Klimaschutz, Armutsbekämpfung und Friedenssicherung – erfordern aktives internationales Engagement und Netzwerkarbeit. Es muss uns ein gemeinsames Anliegen sein, das in den Schulen zu vermitteln“, betonte Spindelegger. Aber nicht nur an Schulen kann der Lehrbehelf verwendet werden, sondern auch in Erwachsenenbildung. In diesem Sinne sagte auch Maher Nasser, der sich gerade Deutsch aneignet: „Man lernt nie aus!“

Heute ist die jährlich erscheinende OECD-Studie “education at a glance” präsentiert worden und es zeigt sich erneut: In Österreich besteht Handlungsbedarf  – in vielen Bereichen. Der Wissenschaftsminister übersieht die Handlungslücken bei der Finanzierung und den Studienabschlüssen  und versucht, das  schlechte Zeugnis für Österreich, schön zu reden.

Die Bildungsausgaben für den tertiären Bereich liegen in Österreich mit 1,3 Prozent des Bruttoinlandsprodukts immer noch deutlich unter dem OECD-Durchschnitt. Eine sofortige Anhebung auf mindestens 2 Prozent des BIP liegt aufg der Hand. Gerade in einer Wirtschaftskrise muss die öffentliche Verantwortung erkannt und die Bildungsfinanzierung massiv ausgebaut werden.

Jedes Jahr aufs Neue zeigt die OECD Österreichs niedrige AkademikerInnenquote auf. Minister Hahn will Studierende aber durch neue Zugangsbeschränkungen vom Studieren abhalten. Neben den drohenden Zugangsbeschränkungen die Studierende vom Master abhalten sollen, vermiesen schlechte Studienbedingungen den meisten den Uni-Alltag. Statt Master- und PhD-Beschränkungen brauchen wir ein funktionierendes Stipendiensystem und gute Studienbedingungen. Studierende dürfen nicht aus den Hochschulen gedrängt werden!

L’un des premiers constats que l’on peut faire en arrivant aux Etats Unis, c’est que la vie est un peu moins chère qu’en France. Les tarifs apparaissent lègèrement en dessous que ceux pratiqués en France et avec la conversion Euros/ Dollar en notre faveur s’affiche concrètements inférieurs. Sauf qu’aux Etats Unis, tout – ou presque – s’achète.

Petite surprise cet apres midi en nous rendant à la plage de Long Beach, à 1h au Sud Est de New York… L’accès à la plage est PAYANTE dans l’Etat de New York, et puis ce n’est pas qu’un petit pourboire : 10$ par personne !!!!

Alors si vous partez outre atlantique et que vous souhaitez faire bronzette sur la plage. Allez y pour la journée et non pas pour 1h3, 2h comme moi !

yesterday i got a call from ubd saying that my change of program which is from bachelor of science to bachelor if business was sucessful.

i was thinking the whole night whether i should accept the new offer or not.

and so today, i came up with a conclusion that i’m sticking to science. i don’t know whether my decision will be right or wrong but yea, just like what i learned in my philosophy class, chances doesn’t occur occasionally.

there are so many path in our life and it’s up to us to decide whether we want to take the chance or not. a simple answer such as yes or no may affect your whole entire life.

so, is it staying in science appropriate?

i can’t forsee myself as an engineer or an architecture in the future.

but since i chose this path, i might as well live with it.

i’m going to struggle for 4 freaking years with applied physics and i still hate physics. well on the brighter side, it’s at least easier than chemistry xD

Do you guys honestly think that GWB was the worst thing that ever happened to the united states or do you think he was actually a good happening for them.

Well to be honest from my point of view i think he was semi good semi bad. I mean he put them in debt from battling in the middle east and causing a lot of mayhem and casualties, but his foreign relations was really good. He could control any country he wanted to because he had so much power and he wasn’t afraid to press that to his enemies.

With the president that the united states has now, i’m not sure if the enemy countries are getting the same scared vibe from him. They know he’s new and their trying to pressure him and take advantage from him, because he’s going to make a few mistakes starting off. This is what i’m waiting for and what everyone else is waiting for now i guess. Just for one little mistake from Barack and the united states will be in an uproar. Some hardcore stuff could go down and we could be sitting on top of another world economic downfall and collapse.

So in other words, sure GWB made a couple of big time moves and made some bad selfish decisions but he wasn’t scared to learn from them and press his enemies into hiding with the power he had.

That’s what america needs, a strong patriotic leader like GWB but who can make up his mind a lot faster and make the right decision.

Immer mehr Absolventen von Unis arbeiten in den USA unbezahlt. Na wenn schon, “Generation Praktikum” gibt es auch bei uns. Die Arbeitslosenrate von unter 25-jährigen, die offiziell zugegeben wird, liegt in den USA bei 17,3 %, dem Doppelten der offiziellen Arbeitslosenstatistik.

Die USA haben die Mauer zu Mexiko nicht wegen den Mexikanern gebaut?
Soll diese Mauer die Amerikaner im Lande halten?
Oder haben die USA Angst, dass Spanisch, die Tochter des Latein, den US-Kauderwelsch ersetzt?

Immer mehr junge Amerikaner wollen das Land verlassen um woanders Arbeit zu finden.

Der Artikel von Reuters auf den ich mich beziehe, begeht den üblichen Irrtum: Er setzt Ausbildung mit Bildung gleich. In dem Artikel ist kaum etwas genannt was mit Bildung zu tun hat. Man kann in den USA Diplome für wahrhafte “Mickey-Mouse” Studiengänge erhalten.

The weather yesterday in New York was perfect; I could have easily spent all day in the park had I not worken up at 3PM–hey such is the life of a writer staying up until 6AM trying to finish the second draft of a novel.  I wore simple chino shorts from UNIS on which I rolled the cuffs and a slouchy American Apparel top that I tucked in.

The other day I was meeting with the awesome editors of Fashion Indie downtown.  They were headed to the Donna Karan sample sale, which actually turned out to be something of a party, replete with bouncers at the door asking for ID.  Strangely, neither Rebecca nor Daniel carry identification with them and despite being obviously over-21, they weren’t allowed in.

We went around the corner to a little café near the Meat Packing district where this photo was taken.  It was sunny that morning (and hot) so I wanted to be comfortable yet still stylish.  I’m wearing shorts from UNIS, a super-soft t-shirt from Alternative Alternative, blue ribbon belt from Ralph Lauren that I’ve had for at least five years and Gucci loafers.  You’re probably sick of the bag by now (I know I am), which is Marc by Marc Jacobs.  Click below for detail photos.

For those of you out in sunny L.A., I highly recommend you stop by the LOVA sample sale for their Spring/Summer 2009 collection (see here).  I love the brand’s modern sensibility mixed with traditional tailoring and fail-safe staples–it sort of strikes me as the UNIS of the West Coast.  It’ll also be something of a party, with cold drinks and and music.  Someone please send me a pair of the tailored shorts?
