So, let me do it for them. This is stuff that leaked out from the Hadley Climate Research Unit, responsible for much of the work behind the IPCC climate reports. Do these scientists seem trustworthy to you? Does it seem proper to retard the economic development of the ENTIRE WORLD just because these guys produced an odd-looking graph?

Have you READ the criticism? Or the original reports? Are you aware that a decision in Copenhagen is going to doom millions of poor people to a life without electricity and clean water? We NEED power, and we NEED to use coal and oil. Carbon-dioxide does NOT mean the apocalypse – it means minimal heating, and better crops worldwide. Stop being ignorant – and at least look at the facts. If anyone want to debate this, start by putting down a comment explaining how CO2 will lead to catastrophic warming.

The sad fact is that the explanation does not exist – its a political fraud. I challenge you to try me on it.

My apologiez for getting stuck on this issue lately – but I will have to keep being stuck with it for a while. This issue is to big to ignore – and as things look we are approaching critical mass on the media awareness of what has been going on inside the Hadley Climate Research Unit. The emails recently released may not be the ultimate proof that the entire thing is a fraud – but its evidence damning enough to call for a complete audit of all the published literature in the subject. Thus, if I get even one person to question what is actually going on, it’s important enough. For those following this story, I recommend

1. My own reference of these emails I’m going through them backwards, so I won’t be completely finished anytime soon, but I’ll keep at it.
2. ClimateAudit, the blog by Stephen McIntyre that is responsible for bringing much of this into the light.
3. Wattsupwiththat, Anthony Watts blog (responsible for doing a complete, independant temperature stations survey in the US)
4. The Air Vent, where the emails were originally dumped by an unknown source
5. Bishop Hill, which also has a list of 33 of the most interesting emails found sofar
6. Unknown server with the emails which was set up a couple of days ago

Sofar, a few papers have picked up on this story. Not many of the mainstream outlets, however – which means that until this thing gains enough steam – no rest for the wicked. I’m back to going through endless amounts of uninteresting mail traffic in search of those incriminating parts that need to be highlighted.

“People who read books,” he went on, “tend to be dispensable. Extremely.” – p. 48

Useful or dispensable? A life of choice or no choice? And what if your own choices led you to have to give of your own body to the `needed’ until your `final donation’?

I love dystopian fiction, and this book was no exception. It reminded me quite a bit of Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, so if you enjoyed that book, you’ll probably like this one as well. Reading books like this is always a reminder of the ways society could go horribly wrong, and sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if parts of the book actually do come to pass someday.

Dorrit, age 50, has reached an age where she is now considered dispensable because she has no children or parents to take care of and because she is a writer, which is considered an unessential occupation. The dispensables in The Unit are provided for in every way, a nice apartment, exercise facilities, and entertainment venues, etc. Except that they are monitored 24/7, and of course, they may never leave The Unit. Dorrit makes great friends here, and in some ways her life is better than when she was on the outside, but, obviously, her life and her body are not her own. She is essentially a commodity of the State.

The book raises some excellent ethical questions. Is a person’s life itself precious and valuable, or is it only what they can contribute to society that is deemed worthwhile? My view will always be the former.

Others have given the plot so I will just add that I found this book to be one I couldn’t put down. I found it well written and the plot different, very different and fascinating. It probably isn’t for everyone but I have recommended it to several friends as I wanted to have someone to discuss it with. I’ve never read anything like it- frightening that perhaps the way our society is going that it could happen here or in Europe. It is not always a comfortable read but good.

Finally another room ticked off the list. Well its nearly finished I still have to do some touch up painting, find door handles and a new light for the ceiling, but other than that I think I can say its complete.

I know she might not be perfect but she is damn close the gorgeous white rectangle tiles make her look stylish and modern. The new stove has officially been broken in and it bakes the most delicious cookies.. Mmm but that could be partly because I cook them as well. And of course the bench I feel such a sense of achievement every time I look at it.

First, congratulations on the Nature paper. Can you send me some reprints when you get them ?

I was at a meeting this week with Tom Crowley and we were discussing ways to reconcile the high-freq proxies with your borehole data. Here are a couple of our thoughts. Involving Mike Mann and others here in CRU, as they all have an input.

1. I’ve shown that the borehole data in Europe agree well with the long instrumental data in both the UK and Europe. The biggest differences/problems seem to come with the North American borehole data, which show the 16/17/18th data much cooler than the European/Asian/African data in the 16/17th century. I’m still reminded by the potential effects of land-use changes, principally in the eastern US, which could be making your North American series too cool. I realise you’ve taken great care with the selection, but this is a nagging doubt and will be picked up by the few skeptics trying to divide us all about the course of change over the last millennium. Is it possible to subdivide the North American borehole data into regions where we can be confident of no land-use changes (possibly and thinking aloud say Canada and the western US and Alaska) ? The aim of this (possibly joint work) is to try and reconcile the low- and high-freq proxies. Tom Crowley has a series for the NH where he’s combined about 20 series (a few of which are in Mike’s and the series we’ve produced here but he has over half the series from less-well resolved proxies – shallow marine and lake sediments) and he gets something very similar to Mike and CRU.

2. As all our (Mike, Tom and CRU) all show that the first few centuries of the millennium were cooler than the 20th century, we will come in for some flak from the skeptics saying we’re wrong because everyone knows it was warmer in the Medieval period. We can show why we believe we are correct with independent data from glacial advances and even slower responding proxies, however, what are the chances of putting together a group of a very few borhole series that are deep enough to get the last 1000 years. Basically trying to head off criticisms of the IPCC chapter, but good science in that we will be rewriting people’s perceived wisdom about the course of temperature change over the past millennium. It is important as studies of the millennium will help to show that the levels of natural variability from models are reasonable. Tom has run his EBM with current best estimates of past forcing (Be-10 as a proxy for solar output and Alan Robock’s ice core volcanic index) and this produces a series similar to all series of the last 1000 years.

The above is just ideas of how we, as a group, could/should try and reduce criticisms etc over the next year or so. Nothing is sacred. Your North American borehole series could be correct as it is annual and most of the high-freq proxy series respond mainly to summer variations. Is yours really annual when there is a marked seasonal snow cover season ?

So there has been a fair bit of gossip this week. The news that has been standing out most with no surprise would be the rumor of a Ferrari 599 GTO Limited Edition!

Now don’t take us on our word for this because they are merely rumors at this point but word on the track is that the GTO will be reduced in by 100-143 pounds in weight and will boast 680-700bhp. I’m personally hoping this happens because I love the 599 and a sexy upgrade won’t hurt it!

Coming to the numbers; the 599 GTO should see a 20-25% increase in price from the standard and may just have a release date as early as October of 2010. If the price isn’t a problem, it’s availability might be so get ready to fight for her. If you power on through those anxious buyers you may be a proud owner of a 500 unit limited edition beast!

Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum

Astonishingly, in 1927…forty years later, a much older Kelly voluntarily returns to the insane asylum and began to chronicle his travels. A typed copy of Kelly’s confession letter survives in the National Archives, and Norris is the first detective to read it. In the letter, Kelly describes having “problems dealing with society“, and being “overtaken with feelings of envy, jealousy, and malice“. Kelly states, “the thing has been hard because of all kinds of ’skank’” (a term he uses to refers to women of low moral character) and “I’ve been on the warpath since I left Broadmoor Asylum.” Also in his letter, he admits to traveling to London after his escape, and more interestingly he tells of traveling to the United States and arriving in New York conveniently before the Carrie Brown murder. He was by profession, a trained upholsterer, and would have known quiet a bit about knives and how to use them effectively for the purpose of murder. Kelly also mentioned traveling to many cities in the US before returning to England and admitted that he came to the US many times over a period of 40 years.

The left composite, was drawn based on 118 year old eye-witness accounts of Jack the Ripper in London. They examined different witness statements and used modern day forensics to come up with a portrait of the killer, even indicating what type of hat he wore.

The drawing on the right, is the result of Mancusi shaving 40 years off of James Kelly’s photo at age 67. As you can see, once they added the type of hat mentioned by eye witnesses, the drawings are a very close match.

In the end, there is no doubt in Norris’ mind that he has found Jack the Ripper. We may never know. John Kelly died of natural causes in 1929 inside Broadmoor Asylum and took his secrets to his grave. In my opinion, Jack the Ripper in America was very well done and is a must-see for all forensic buffs and amateur Ripperologists. I’m interested in seeing further research, analysis and discussion of Norris’ theory. Regarding any factual errors in this post, I apologize in advance, and encourage everyone to let me know what needs to be corrected.

Time After Time

On a lighter note, anybody remember the movie “Time After Time” starring Malcolm McDowell, John Warner and Mary Steenburgen? McDowell played H.G. Wells, who uses his time machine to chase his friend, Warner (aka Jack the Ripper) through the streets of modern day (1979) San Francisco. After watching Norris’ documentary, maybe Hollywood’s silly (but entertaining) version of the Ripper story had a sliver of truth to it after all.

A iniciativa tem o objetivo de fortalecer a infraestrutura de capacitação de recursos humanos, concentrando massa crítica qualificada; pesquisadores, professores, tecnólogos, técnicos de nível médio, operários especializados, estruturas de ensino e pesquisa.

Para o vice-governador, investimentos na área de capacitação e aprendizagem são sempre indispensáveis e fundamentais. “Os investimentos do Estado em Teófilo Otoni são sempre em dobro para as regiões do Mucuri e do Jequitinhonha. Somente em Teófilo Otoni, a Copasa está investindo R$ 90 milhões para obras de saneamento. As assinaturas de convênios realizadas hoje demonstram o desenvolvimento integrado de Minas Gerais. É por isso que o Governo de Minas é reconhecido como o melhor do país”, ressaltou.

Além da consolidação da plataforma Polos de Inovação, os investimentos também serão destinados ao acordo entre o Governo e a Prefeitura de Teófilo Otoni para a realização de projetos estruturadores de qualificação profissional, formação de recursos humanos, pesquisa e inovação. Beneficiará, também, as ações do projeto Usina do Trabalho, viabilizará a consolidação e operacionalização da Unidade de Inovação Tecnológica (Unit), vai favorecer o desenvolvimento regional com a adesão de ações do projeto Integraminas, além de dar qualificação a jovens empreendedores para atuarem na rede social por meio do Projeto Teia – Tecnologia, Empreendedorismo e Inovação Aplicados.

Anastasia também autorizou a assinatura do protocolo de intenções que visa à cooperação e à conjugação de esforços para a implantação do Centro Tecnológico de Pesquisa e Transferência de Tecnologia do Mucuri, com sede em Teófilo Otoni. Além disso, entregou certificados da capacitação presencial do projeto Jovens Empreendedores do Polo de Inovação do Vale do Mucuri.

“Aos jovens que aqui estão, meus parabéns pelo investimento no futuro e no progresso de vocês. Para mudar a realidade, é preciso capacitar as pessoas e dar oportunidades. O futuro da humanidade, do país, de Minas Gerais, e dos Vales do Mucuri e Jequitinhonha é o conhecimento, especialmente em ciência e tecnologia. Estamos honrando os ideais do símbolo de nossa bandeira, o triângulo, que representa prosperidade, justiça social e conhecimento”, disse o vice-governador.

Antecedendo à solenidade, o vice-governador visitou as instalações da Unit, onde conheceu as atividades realizadas nos núcleos de produção-escola de joalheria e lapidação, no laboratório gemológico e no núcleo de informação e treinamento. Os representantes da unidade apresentaram as atividades a Anastasia, explicando-lhe o atual contexto da produção e comercialização de pedras preciosas no Estado. A Unit foi criada para inovação dos processos, maquinários, ferramentas e insumos buscando o diferencial para as joias produzidas em Teófilo Otoni. As novas linhas de produto contam com design com identidade regional e qualidade certificada.

Inauguração UAI
O vice-governador Antonio Anastasia também inaugurou, em Teófilo Otoni, a 14ª Unidade de Atendimento Integrado (UAI) do Estado. A nova unidade substitui o antigo Psiu, localizado no bairro Olga Correia, e ocupará uma área de 590 m², com capacidade para realizar 350 atendimentos ao dia. Os investimentos para a instalação da Unidade de Teófilo Otoni foram cerca de R$ 580 mil. Serviços como Ouvidoria Geral do Estado, Instituto de Identificação da Polícia Civil, Polícia Militar, Sine, Coordenadoria Regional da Secretaria de Estado de Planejamento e Gestão, Cemig, Detran, Copasa, Procon, Instituto Estadual de Florestas serão disponibilizados na UAI de Teófilo Otoni. A nova UAI também terá auditório para a realização de palestras, treinamentos e cursos e Telecentro.

Anastasia ressaltou, durante a inauguração da UAI, o empenho do Governo do Estado em melhorar os serviços prestados à sociedade. “A UAI é uma agência de serviços públicos que o Estado presta ao cidadão de maneira eficiente e moderna. Os municípios mineiros estão sentindo a presença do Governo de Minas de forma eficiente e ágil”, disse.
