I never would have considered wearing shoes made of elastic, or with heels designed after furniture, but it does exist. The thing is, this shoe brand – United Nude, has been around since 2003 (or was it 2002?), but of course I’ve never heard of it. I only learned about it when I just so happened to flounce upon an online publication called Trend Hunter. That’s when it all made perfect sense.

Brands like United Nude are for the fashionably eerie, as it incorporates architecture (the co-Founder, Rem D Koolhaas is an architect) into its design concept. Koolhaas’ partner Galahad Clark has a more classic shoe connoisseur background , and together they make some exquisite looking foot candy.

United Nude is sold in over 30 countries globally, most of which take up Europe. The duo’s latest design – Lo Res, a semi-automatic design method, entails an object being scanned into a 3-D computer model and regenerated into various solutions. Sounds like a handful, but results in a cute little shoe that looks quite fragile but in actuality, it’s quite durable and comes in five traditional (brown, black, grey, white and light blue) colourways. However, my personal favorite is the Sharpei Mid boot, named after a dog. My favorite version is the on covered in small blue arrows.

(Rem Koolhaas decides he wants to make some real money) 

Shoe brand United Nude, which was founded by architect Rem Koolhaas and Galahad JD Clark, opened a flagship store in Amsterdam on Oct. 22. Designed by brand creative director and architect Rem Koolhaas, the interior design of the flagship store reflects characteristics of the brand’s products and DNA.

From injection-moulded shoes to high-end carbon fiber heels, United Nude is “founded on conceptual design, elegance, and innovation.” The store is a “dark-shop” concept, which means it is completely dark in all areas other than those where the products are showcased and literally highlighted. The most important and prominent element of the store design is the Wall of Light, a computer-controlled LED wall that displays the United Nude products as works of art encapsulated in geometric frames.

United Nude also plans to open flagship stores in Shanghai and New York in early 2010.

And now for Part 3 of the weekend’s shoe-ventures, as Mr. Meik! calls them.  Once again strolling from TriBeCa to the LES, we took a path up Elizabeth Street, and I laughed at a store sign I could see: “United Nude,” having no idea what they sold.  But when we walked by, there were colorful booties that looked like they had been made from zipper teeth (they weren’t), and they were spinning on a turntable in the window.  So I went in.  I was fascinated by the architectural aspects of the shoes, because we all know I like shoes that stand out.  From the heel-less pumps to the geometric Mary Janes, I was smitten.  And I found out that the “zipper” shoes were actually made of one piece of elastic that stretches around the entire shoe.  Fascinating.  Once my bank account allows me, a pair of these, too, will be mine.

We’re off to a wedding in Martha’s Vineyard this weekend.  Until Monday…

I just love United Nude shoes. The are just so beautiful and unique. They really are just works of art that you wear on your feet. I want their whole collection, as they are some of the most beautiful shoes that I have ever seen.  These shoes are not for practical people, but why be practical when you can havesome fun with what you are wearing.

Rachel Zoe can’t dress herself but she sure can dress others. Featured above is a look at Rachel Zoe’s collection for QVC which includeds great jewels, faux furs (I’m sure that PETA will be satisfied) and eye-catching evening bags. Prices range from $32-$130. When I traveled to SoHo to interview Iris Loeffler last month, Ms. Loeffler took me to one of her favorite shoe stores, United Nude. I was instantly impressed with their designs – especially the Stealth design (featured below). Siwy Denim is incredible. I don’t know if you can call all of their designs “denim” (hence the sheer fabric used in some of the designs) but here are my favorite picks for their Fall 2009 collection:

I GET why Crocs got so popular, I mean they are cheap, easy to clean, come in lots of colors, are airy and light and waterproof…however no one can deny that they are hideous. Am I wrong here? They really need to stop. Thankfully, United Nude is here to save the day with these gorgeous flats. Although definitely pricier, they have the same appeal as Crocs in their simplicity, range of colors, and texture, but are so much cuter and more sophisticated. Also, they have the advantage of being acceptable for wearing in public, UNLIKE CROCS.

I’m not a huge fan of flats myself but if I could mismatch these, I’d be down. I’m more partial to the United Nude wedges myself, which are actually on sale at asos.com right now.

 I’m not sure where I first heard about United Nude, the lovely collaboration between English shoemaker Galahad Clark (who went to my university) and Dutch architect Rem D Koolhaas, but they’ve got something interesting going. You might remember them for the Mobius shoe, which made the rounds a while ago:

What I’m debating is the Mono Jane, a plastic wedge with a wide white (or black or brown) patent strap. The price is right, the colors are many, but my only hesitation is the slight resemblance to Crocs. I don’t. do. Crocs.

By creating an intersection between fashion and design, the Cosmo by United Nude’s Rem Koolhaas and Galahad Clark cannot be ignored. Those sandals are really creative. B+

I have written about United Nude and their fantastic shoes before. I just can not believe how they have taken the shoe and turned it into artwork for your feet. Their Spring/Summer Collection does not disappoint.

The Ultra Mobius is such a fantastic design. It looks like it a single strap of leather has been shaped and sculpted to form this shoe. It has of course the signature open architectural heel that United Nude is known for. By the way, the the heel seems a bit high for you, the same design can be found in the Mobius Hi.

One of my favorite shoes that I have seen this season is the Porn Toe. Just look at that shape. The best way to really appreciate this design is from the back.

Wow, just wow. Truly a feat of engineering.
