English | Español

A statement from Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications and Social Media at Sony Computer Entertainment America:

“The 2009 holiday season got off to an amazing start for PlayStation, with all key retailers showing a significant increase for PS3, PSP and key holiday titles over Black Friday & the holiday weekend. PlayStation 3 demand was at an all time high with the system selling more than 440,000 units for the week ending 11/29/09.

In today’s economy, consumers are drawn to items that offer the most value for their money, making the PS3 an ideal choice for those who want a comprehensive gaming and entertainment system all in one package. Combine that with exclusive holiday bundles and an extensive software line-up, one that many analysts are calling the best in the industry, with titles such as Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, UNCHARTED 2:Among Thieves, and LittleBigPlanet: Game of the Year, we have no doubt the momentum and demand will continue and consumers will prove that entertainment this holiday season is going to be defined by PlayStation.”

We told you a QVC press release on Black Friday would be forthcoming, and here it is, released Saturday.

QVC enjoyed its biggest Black Friday ever, ringing up more than $32 million in orders – a 60 percent increase over last year’s Black Friday sales. More than 765,000 units were ordered in a 24-hour period, according to the home shopping network.

QVC mounted the most aggressive Black Friday event in its 23-year history. The network’s holiday weekend kicked off early, Thanksgiving evening, with “The New Black Friday,” a special programming event meant to keep shoppers at home rather than visiting their local malls.

QVC offered three Today’s Special Value offers (items presented at exceptionally low prices, for a specific period of time) instead of the usual one, and had specially priced deals in every hour of programming.

QVC CEO and president Mike George

“Our merchandising team worked incredibly hard to find the most special gift-giving ideas on the market and price them competitively,” QVC president and CEO Mike George said in a canned statement. “And, as always, the entire QVC organization delivered a fun, stress-free shopping experience for our customers. Given the successful results – our largest Black Friday in our company’s 23-year history – it’s clear that their hard work paid off,”

Said George, “We’re thrilled with the overwhelming response we received from our customers and will continue to strive to be their preferred destination for holiday shopping.”

Largely contributing to QVC’s Black Friday success was the Sylvania Digital Camcorder with a 2″ LCD Color Display, one of the three Today’s Special Value offers, selling out of more than 200,000 units.

Additional top sellers from the day included the Sharper Image Entertainment Projector, the Playhut Travel Lounger with Removable Slumber Bag and Storage Tote, the Nintendo Wii Gaming System with Accessory Case and Games and the Olympus 12 MP, 5x Optical Zoom Camera.

QVC.com also played an integral role, contributing more than 40 percent of the day’s sales.

The press release made no mention of poor host Dave James, who stayed live for 28 hours straight — on the air and via Webcast — for the Black Friday event.

Give the poor man credit for his contribution to the day’s blockbuster sales, CEO George! How about combat pay for James?

Tips for conducting a good interview #1 – Find a good location Avoid Starbucks! It’s often easiest t

Tips for conducting a good interview

#1 – Find a good location

Avoid Starbucks! It’s often easiest to suggest a centrally located corporate coffee shop but if there is any way you can interview in a place that has some relevance to the story or your subject you’ll have much greater success.

Not only because you’ll gain a further sense of context, people are often more comfortable (and open) when they’re in a familiar place or what feels like “their territory.”

Ask to meet at your subject’s house, work, or the location of an incident relevant to the story. Even meeting at the interviewee’s favorite restaurant is more interesting than a Starbucks.

#2 – Prepare Your Goals Ahead

Know what questions you’re going to ask and why you’re going to ask them.

Heading to an interview with a sense of what you want to get out of it (a colorful re-enactment of an event, an on-the-record opinion on the issue you’re covering, general background, etc.) is critical to conducting a successful interview.

You should already be thinking about what you want your piece to look like and what you need from this interview to get your article closer to that end result.

#3 – Write down your questions

Be sure and bring prepared questions with you. I usually go into an interview with twice as many questions than I expect to ask. The security of knowing that I’m not going to get stuck helps my confidence and you never know what question will get you the information you’re really looking for.

#4 – Work on your flow

This is probably the most challenging, but also the most important interview skill you can develop.

You want to strike a balance between a conversation (which helps make your subject feel comfortable and aids candor) and getting the job done. As your subject is answering your question, be thinking about what you’ll ask next and why.

The flow of questions needs to seem natural and conversational, don’t spin your subject off on a completely different topic just because that’s the next question on your list-think about segue’s and transitions.

This way your subject doesn’t feel forced to give you sound bites and may open up a little (particularly important for anyone working on an audio piece where you may need blocks of the raw interview).

#5 – Think about the medium

Interviewing techniques defiantly vary for different mediums. If you’re interviewing for audio or video you want to ask two part questions which encourages subjects to talk for longer blocks of time.

Conversely, when you’re interviewing for print, try and break questions up so you can get shorter and more concise answers (easier for taking notes and for quoting later). You can be more conversational with interviews for print, you can say “yeah,” and “uh-huh,” etc.

Not doing this is one of the biggest challenges when you’re interviewing for audio. Nodding and smiling accomplishes the same sort of conversational encouragement and keeps your tape clean.

Another great trick for audio interviews is to have your subject re-enact the story. It makes for good sound and helps you avoid having too much of your own narration later on.

#6 – Bring a buddy

I find having a second person as a note taker and extra set of ears can be very useful.

If you don’t think another person will overwhelm or distract your subject (I find that is pretty rare) it can be a lifesaver to have that second set of notes to check your quotes and information.

#7 – Avoid Obsessing

While good notes and recording are very important, you can do yourself a disservice by obsessing about recording every little detail of what your subject says.

As you’re interviewing you should be able to discern the gems from the chatter-focus on the quotes and info you know you’re going to use and make sure you get that right!

#8 – Be a little annoying

Don’t be afraid to relentlessly revisit a question or topic that you feel hasn’t been properly addressed by the interviewee. Sometimes people need time to warm up to you or a topic, or will respond better if your question is worded differently. Keep trying.

#9 – Be a little sneaky

Continue taking notes even after the interview is officially over. Sometimes people say the most revealing or intimate things when they feel that they’re out of the “hot seat.” If they don’t say “off the record,” it’s all game.

#10 – Empower them

A great question to ask if you don’t fully understand the perspective of your interviewee is “what is your ideal solution/resolution?” Obviously this only works in certain circumstances, but when appropriate it can help clarify a person’s point of view or opinion.

#11 – Work them up

Another great question is “Why do you care about this issue?” This can be an effective way to get a strong and emotional quote about why the topic you’re covering is so important.

You can also ask for the turning point in a story, the moment when everything changed or catalyzed. This can help you shape the narrative of your story as well.

#12 – Endure awkward silences

I know this is totally counterintuitive. My instinct is to keep chattering and asking questions to keep people feeling comfortable, but sometimes, especially when you’re dealing with sensitive subjects, you need to shut up and wait.

Ask your question, let them give you the rehearsed and generic answer, then sit there quietly and see what comes next. You’d be amazed how often this technique yields powerful results.

#13 – Ask for what you need

Seriously, sometimes interviewees are frustrating not because they’re trying to bust your chops but just don’t understand what you want from them.

I find that many interview subjects get a kick out of having you “pull back the curtain” a little and tell them about your process.

You can say, “Listen, I really need a quote from you encapsulating your feelings on this issue,” or “I really need you to walk me through the chronology of this,” or even, “I really need you to take me to a location that is relevant to this issue so I can set a scene.”

For the most part people want to be helpful and you just need to tell them how they can.

Timeshare units and condominium units more or less share the same concept. However, timeshares are in a way different than condominiums as individual housing units are turned into weekly time slots. These weekly time slots are then bought and sold. As a result, timeshare units can have up to 52 owners, one for each week of the year. Each of these owners have rights for its use to a specified week within the year per unit.

The allocation of weekly time slots on the timeshare varies widely and depends on the developer selling the timeshare units. Some timeshares have you buy a specific week in a specific unit within the vacation resort. Other timeshares offer floating time slots which simply assures you of an available unit in the building for a particular week. However, small these differences may seem, they can have enormous implications when trying to sell and trade your timeshare unit. As a result, it is imperative to understand exactly what you are purchasing if you decide to buy a timeshare unit.

Most of timeshare sales in the United States today are financed by taking a loan and cash purchases of timeshare are increasingly rare. As a result, buyers should consider the cost of the loan in addition to the associated cost of owning timeshare when considering the purchase of a timeshare. Relevant expenses in owning a timeshare include maintenance fees, special assessment fees and taxes on the property. When these numbers are added to the timeshare’s cost, it usually shows that the timeshare is not nearly as attractive in the amount it will save you as the timeshare salesperson makes it out to be.

The primary disadvantage of taking out a loan to finance the purchase of the timeshare is that most timeshare units don’t qualify for a standard housing loan. Consequently, interest costs on financing for timeshares are exorbitant, sometimes reaching as high as 20%, or even more. Most banks and financial institutions do not normally finance timeshares so the developer sometimes acts as the financier of the loan. When you add the finance charges into the other costs of the timeshare unit, the inexpensive vacation unit becomes a lot less appealing as a way to save money. At the end of the day, the timeshare will end up costing you a lot of money if you choose to finance the purchase of a timeshare.

There are three important factors to consider when investing in real estate: location, location and location. This saying is applicable with timeshare units as it is to regular real estate properties. Location of the timeshare does not only apply to the location of the vacation property, but also applies to the date of your weekly time slot.

Timeshare resort units in the best locations and dates can be absolutely arranged with other timeshare units around the world. However, timeshares that are located in an off-peak vacation time slot will find it difficult, if not impossible, to trade for other timeshares. However, purchasing a timeshare resort unit in a great location in high season generally costs more than timeshares in off-peak dates. As a result, you should avoid buying timeshare units in off-peak dates even if they are less expensive than peak timeshare units.

After trying to make the ideas outlined in the last part work, I stumbled upon more direct proof of the situation. Also, I can give a fuller proof.

My numbering here is a bit screwed up, because it turns out we need the result for integral domains, first. So let’s do that.

RA.I.4: The units of a polynomial ring with coefficients from an integral domain are the constants.

Assume otherwise. Then there exists f and g in R[x] such that fg = 1, and the degrees of f and g are nonzero. But since R is an integral domain, deg fg = deg f + deg g, so the degree of fg cannot be zero. Contradiction.

RA.I.5: The units of a polynomial ring are those elements whose constant term is a unit and whose other coefficients, if any, are nilpotent.

One way is clear, for we know that the sum of a unit and a nilpotent element is a unit, and RA.I.3 tells us that when a polynomial without a constant term has only nilpotent coefficients, the polynomial is nilpotent in R[x].

The other way requires examining R[x]/(PR[x]), where P is a prime ideal in R. We haven’t defined such quotient rings, but we’ll freely link/steal the two results we need from the blogosphere. Since P is a prime ideal, PR[x] is, and so R[x]/PR[x] is an integral domain. But R[x]/PR[x] is isomorphic to (R/P)[x], for if f is in R[x]/PR[x], then writing π(f) = g + PR[x] shows that every coefficient of f is in R/P. Since P is prime, (R/P) is an integral domain, so (R/P)[x] is as well. So the units of (R/P)[x] are just the units of R/P.

Pulling back to R[x], what we have shown is that the nonconstant coefficients of a unit in R[x] are congruent to zero modulo every prime ideal in R; in other words, the coefficients are nilpotent.

In particular, if R is an integral domain, then RA.I.5 reduces to RA.I.4, since the only nilpotent element in an integral domain is 0.

Give up smoking Quite obvious really but if you want to dramatically improve your health then you ne

Give up smoking

Quite obvious really but if you want to dramatically improve your health then you need to quit smoking. You will lower the chances of developing cancer, heart disease, lung disease and death and if that’s not good enough…food will taste better, you’ll smell fresh and you won’t harm others around you with your second-hand smoke! So what’s stopping you? Visit your GP for help – they can talk you through the process of quitting and can prescribe you nicotine replacement therapy if required.

Alternatively visit the following NHS website for more advice:

http://smokefree.nhs.uk/

Cut down your alcohol intake

Occasional drinking is fine, so long as you stay within your limits. Ideally men should drink no more than 3 – 4 units (on a regular basis) a day whereas women should drink no more than 2 – 3 units per day. A glass of wine is typically 1.5 – 3 units, depending on the size of the glass and strength of the wine. A pint of beer is around 2.8 – 3 units. Men should try and stick to 21 units per week, whereas women should stick to 14 units. Cutting down your alcohol intake will lower your chances of liver disease and may make you sleep better. Your skin and eyes will become brighter and you’re likely to lose weight. Alcohol affects your body’s absorption of vitamins and also reduces cardio-vascular fitness and muscle growth. So if you want to improve your general health – drink less.

Learn the benefits of healthy food

Many of us eat when we’re hungry and don’t really think about what we’re putting into our mouths, but the purpose of food isn’t to just fill our bellies. Food provides us with vital vitamins and energy and helps us to grow and stay healthy. One of the best ways to become healthy is to educate and familiarise ourselves with food: the body is like a machine which requires healthy fuel to make it run efficiently. Try and eat your five portions of fruit and veg a day, don’t load your body with fatty foods, but above all have fun with your diet – a healthy balance equals a healthy mind.

Take up regular exercise

If you want to immediately feel good about yourself then get out there and release those endorphins! Try going for a brisk walk for a minimum of 20 mins x 3 times per week, then when you get used to this swap walking for a light jog, swim or a bike ride. Not only will this make you look better but you’ll also be brimming with confidence and have a healthy mind.

Take time out to meditate

Long term stress can suppress our immune system, which can then potentially lead to mental and physical illness. Take time to wind-down at the end of the day and relax. Try yoga or meditation – just a few minutes of deep breathing exercises a day can greatly reduce stress levels.

The gears are spinning again – we got a bunch of stuff done – and I have a screenshot to prove it!

If you go check the Checklist, you’ll notice a couple of things have turned a beautiful green.

I managed to show them all off with a single screenshot (yay!)

Notice:

The HUD is gone, excpet for the stats of the unit you selected and the end turn button. The other button you see is a notifier that tells you if you’ll have enough AP to take an action after you move to the cursor.

There’s a horse (yay!) and a guy riding it. Calvary. With working collisions. Oh yes. Notice: I actually took my time spriting the horse – trying to get a style down for the rest of the graphical revamp later. Check it out:

It’s in widescreen – this isn’t default! It’s a custom resolution! Now anyone can have the game fit their monitor, yay! (Shown at my 1440×900 resolution)

Screenshot: http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/71/horseshudwidescreen.png

(Linked because it’s too big to post here)

Pretty nice, huh? Next up will be speed bonuses, and after that the collision revamp and ai revamp. Good things are in the future.

Also notice: The website’s been cleaned up. Now you can access the latest build AND the latest checklist through the navagation bar at the top of the screen! Classy!

Here are some examples of a standard drink.

A pub measure of spirits (35.5ml)

A small glass of wine (12.5% volume)

A half pint of normal beer

An alcopop (275ml bottle)

A bottle of wine at 12.5% alcohol contains about seven standard drinks.

It´s time for a good old list of “Top of Something” – in this case Unique Units (=

It´s time for a good old list of “Top of Something” – in this case Unique Units (= UU) in Civilization 4: Beyond The Sword multiplayer. First of all, while the exact order might be subjective (and more for fun then serve a purpose ), I hope the arguments for why a specific unit is good at achieving something are logical and convincing.

There is some tendency towards early era units, but then again there are more of those in the game.

Remember, evaluating a unit´s strength has always to be connected to the game settings it´s supposed to be used in. So Jaguars don´t shine on Highlands nor do they so in a game where choking one opponent at the cost of your buildup will not win you the game since you are playing 7 other players at the same time.

7. Jaguar

Unique unit for Aztec; Replaces Swordsman+10% city attack
Starts with Woodsman I
era actually used in: Ancient, some Classical

Jaguars are great for choking the opponent and controlling the area around your land. They have 2 moves on tiles that give them a lot of defense bonus and can be build so soon, that only the threat of them potentially coming makes getting and hooking metal the top priority for the players facing them – sometimes at the cost of hooking food or getting a better position for a second city.

6. Skirmisher

Unique unit for Mali; Replaces Archer1-2 First Strikes
+50% city defense
+25% hills defense
era actually used in: Ancient

Skirmisher can be build without any ressource while making a choke with warriors and archers against the player building them basically impossible. On the other hand they can slow down or completely choke even more then one player during an ancient start teamer. That is because they have great odds on archers and warriors, especially flat both in offense and defense – so no additional action is required to have the dominating unit in terms of strength on the playing field during the early phase of the game while an opponent requires metal in order to fight them without getting slowed down too much – and even then it´s often a costly endevour freeing your land from skirmishes.

5. War Chariot

Unique unit for Egypt; Replaces ChariotImmune to First Strikes
Doesn’t receive defensive bonuses
Can withdraw from combat (10% chance)
+100% attack vs. Axemen
era actually used in: Ancient, Classical

War chariots have two moves and cost 20 hammers (quick speed) just like normal chariots, but have a strength of 5. That is an increase of base strength of 25%. Only the cataphract and the praetorian can keep up with that and the last one is more expensive then the unit it is based on, the swordsman (26 to 30 hammers). Unlike chariots warchariots can be build for a much longer period of time, adding to mass and the ability of 2 moves a decent strength which can combat even spears in 2 vs 1. Also warchariots come with animal husbandry, a very early researched technology, allowing for a kill or at least certain choking of a player who is left without metal at this point.

4. Panzer

Unique unit for Germany; Replaces Tank
Doesn’t receive defensive bonuses
+50% vs. armored units
Starts with Blitz
era actually used in: Modern

Modern is all about fast moving stacks – especially including the ability to move quick around the opponent´s land. The unit for that is the tank, since it is the strongest available 2-mover in this era. You do build other stuff, but the tank is the unit of choice most of the time. The Panzer is a tank that additionaly gets an unreal bonus against tanks. ‘nough said.

3. Cataphract

Unique unit for Byzantium; Replaces Knight
Can flank attack catapults and trebuchets
Doesn’t receive defensive bonuses
era actually used in: Medieval, Renaissance

Knights dominate late medieval, early Renaissance and the Cataphract gets a bonus of 25% on the base strength of a normal Knight. That leaves it virtually without a counterunit. Both Elephants and Pikeman being the counter units to Knights don´t nearly have as good odds in defense or especially offense (pikeman) as other counter units with their favorite “prey” in other eras – and they both do not have 2 moves nor are the unit you preferably are building in late medieval, early Renaissance. Add to that a strategy that involves building tripple promoted cataphracts that have access to anti melee (= shock) or anti-horse (= formation) promotion and you get a unit that is so unbalanced compared to what else is available at its time like probably no other in the game.

2. Impi

Unique unit for Zulus; Replaces Spearman
+100% vs. Mounted Units
Starts with Mobility
era actually used in: Ancient, Classical, Medieval

Impis are spears with 2 moves. What doesn´t sound too spectacular at first is one of the most feared units in multiplayer civilization. For ancient that means that there is a unit out there, that can arrive in your land before you have planted a second city in order to get metal. It can be build with bronze from bronzeworking, which is almost always the first technology you research, it moves twice (almost) no matter what the terrain is and it gets defense bonus from terrain (forest etc.). Impis can take out or significantly slow down two or sometimes even three players – the presence of Zulu alone makes a difference in the way a team facing them has to plan out their game. After the early game harrassment Impis still can be used in surprise attacks due to their mobility promotion, but also during a bigger attack with sheer mass. That´s true for both ancient and classical, where the Impi is the best possible unique unit in most setups. In medieval they still are able to harass an opponent in many situations and afterwards in big masses are a pretty decent counterunit to Knights since 2 of them kill 1 Knight, even 1 Cataphract most of the time.

1. Fast Worker

Unique unit for India; Replaces Worker
Can improve tiles
move range: 3
era actually used in: all eras

The fast worker is the dominating unit of later eras from Renaissance upwards. In modern and future it is a game defining factor, maybe even the biggest for those eras. Without it many super fast rush strategies wouldn´t be possible. That is due to its ability to save turns early on while chopping forest (move on it AND chop in 1 turn) and due to being able to move on forests/hills AND road them the same turn. Modern and Future start teamer without fast workers would look entirely different. In general in all eras fast workers are the best build up advantage you can get. An imperialistic India cannot be beat in its expansion, the difference to normal workers getting ridiculous in later eras. Also the fast worker shines in all game types multiplayer civilization has to offer, from solo games like duels, CTONS and Ironman games to teamers.

Honorable mentioning: (Aggressive) Praetorians

Unique unit for Rome; Replaces Swordsman
Strength 8 instead of 6.

Praetorians in “normal” status are good, sometimes great. They can be used nicely both in offense and defense. Early send out praetorians can slow down the opponent significantly, too. They require ironworking AND iron though and cost a (for early ancient) pretty painful 30 hammers, while an aggressive axeman with shock promotion has very good odds on them and requires only 23 hammers to be build. Still a great unit, useable throughout the entire game of an ancient or classical start game and even very playable in some medieval start strategies.

With restricted leaders the praetorian is not aggressive (both Roman leader don´t have the aggressive trait) hence has no easy (if any) access to shock promotion when spawning. Now with an aggressive leader the obstacles of setting up a running empire and only then becoming a threat are pretty much the same, but if that happens – there is no counter unit. Aggressive praetorians are the strongest possible unit regarding base strength civ has to offer in an ancient and most parts of a classical start. Even then though sitll not the best unit to have – just the strongest

Unfortunately, Botox received from one cosmetic procedure provider may not be exactly what you get a

Unfortunately, Botox received from one cosmetic procedure provider may not be exactly what you get at another. Even though Botox (botulinum toxin type A) is supplied to all doctors and facilities in a manufacturer’s vial containing 100 units of vacuum-dried neurotoxin complex, in order to be able to inject these active units of Botox, a physician must add a saline solution to get it in “liquid form.”

There are 100 units of Botox in every vial, and the more saline that is added to the vial, the less active units that will be present in each syringe. You should be aware that some may refer to this as the dilution process, but it is actually called “reconstitution.” So while each healthcare professional gets the same Botox product from the manufacturer, when it’s reconstituted for injection, strength and efficacy will differ depending on the amount of saline added. This brings to mind a number of questions for you to ask yourself before deciding on Botox injections.

With this in mind, you should be cautious when you see Botox offered at bargain prices. Everyone pays the same price to the vendor (Allergan) – so how can prices to patients vary so much? It doesn’t seem reasonable, does it? That’s because it isn’t, if manufacturer’s recommended reconstitution guidelines are followed. Botox at a “bargain” price almost always means it has been diluted far beyond what’s recommended (or effective).

A patient may assume that he or she is getting a “good dose” of Botox because the physician is injecting a large amount – but don’t confuse units of saline with units of actual Botox. Physicians who add more saline to the Botox vial than is suggested by the manufacturer, or by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), are administering a less effective injection of Botox – so you should always ask, “What is your reconstitution ratio?”

Also, some facilities quote a price based on the area of injection. You need to look further into this vague statement. As well as asking about the reconstitution ratio, you also need to ask a second important question, “how many units do you inject in that area?”

And, that begs the next question — what is their definition of an “area”. For instance, a provider may advertise “$99 per area”, but if the crow’s feet area is broken up into two areas, when in most practices it is considered one area, you’re not getting any bargain. Look, instead, for a dermatologist or plastic surgeon that charges for Botox “by the unit” so you only pay for the exact number of units you receive. Be sure that he or she follows ASPS guidelines on reconstitution, as well.

If you’re considering Botox, you want to be as educated as possible and do plenty of research before going ahead with the injections. Being the well-informed consumer of these products means being aware of exactly what is being used in your cosmetic treatment, whether the person administering your cosmetic treatment is qualified, and last, but not least, if you are even a candidate for Botox injectables.
