Universal search, or blended search, refers to the mixed variety of search engine results returned on one search including video, shopping, map and news.

In the search below for “pizza” you’ll see web results, news results and map results.

Universal search

This type of search result likely garners mixed reviews from the businesses listed. While Domino’s and Pizza Hut are probably pleased to be in the top spots, I doubt they like the negative press that follows in the news results. Likewise, small local joints like Barley’s and Bertolo’s are surely thrilled to beat out the big guys and appear on page 1 thanks to the local map results. But it’s safe to say Little Caesar’s is less happy to have been moved below the fold as a result of the map results inclusion.

Despite being the 5th web search result, Little Caesar’s is placed as if it were the 15th result because of the news and map listings, which is a far less satisfying ranking.

It is important to constantly monitor your ranking and reevaluate your SEO strategy if you find you are getting knocked out of rank by other forms of universal search. If you find your former #1 spot is now filled by a video result, perhaps consider adding your own videos to YouTube. If you are being beat out by map listings, consider adding your information to Google Local Business.

In 2007, all the SEO marketers wanted to know what universal search meant for them. Could this be

In 2007, all the SEO marketers wanted to know what universal search meant for them. Could this be the death of SEO for Internet Marketers? What will this do for organically written articles? Will you have to rank in the top three rather than the top ten in order to make room for the other forms of media that will be listed on the front page?

Almost three years later, universal search is a boon for those that are Internet savvy. We have learned how to expand our business from a global search to a local search. Videos and podcasts became a way of life for the average computer user and anyone that was serious about getting their message across.

What is Universal Search?

You may be wondering what universal search is. Universal search entails a blended form of performing a search. When you begin a search, you no longer pull up straight text like in the days past. You may find results that list images, press releases, videos, local businesses, maps, blogs, audio, and articles all included on the first page of your search.

SEO is Dead… Or is It?

Along with every change that occurs, you will always find the doomsayers. Universal search was supposed to be the death of SEO techniques. However, others might argue that this just gave knowledgeable marketers some extra tools to be noticed.

The fact is that the Internet will continually evolve with or without you. Instead of fighting changes, there will always be a way to adapt with the times. Furthermore, people will always be on the Internet looking for more information from people willing to offer information with value rather than a hard sell.

Some may say that universal search has made things infinitely more difficult. Those of us that are ready to develop a new range of content, see this as an opportunity to get our message across on several platforms.

SEO that Evolves with the Times

When we utilize all the types of content out there including articles, video, podcasts, press releases, and images, we open the door to a range of mediums that appeal to a larger market. After all, not everyone’s preferred style of learning is through linguistics. It is obvious in today’s global community, that visual and auditory play just as large a role in gaining knowledge.

It is essential that we build a consistent message across all of these platforms in order to achieve the maximum amount of benefits available. Optimize your content using universal search marketing strategies for your product, service, or information to be noticed first.

As a search marketing firm, it is our job to understand how search engines are constantly evoloving

As a search marketing firm, it is our job to understand how search engines are constantly evoloving and how the search industry is changing. My concern is that these important changes in the world of search are not being communicated clearly to the small and mid-sized business owner in a language they can understand. This blog post will highlight an important change that is happening right now in the world of search. And explain why it could have a big impact on your business’ search engine marketing strategy.

Understanding Universal Search:

The standard 10 blue links that you see on a Google search result page are going the way of the dinosaur. Universal, or blended search, will replace the 10 blue links and open the door to more variety on the search results page. Images, maps, and video are just some of the new items sprinkled into the search results pages. As the public’s comfort level and usage with search engines has increased, so has their trust that the engine will return exactly the information they are seeking. As a result, search queries become more advanced and grow in length and detail. The engines are tracking this progression of user behavior and are now presenting new content types (such as video) to satisfy the searcher’s query. This is important to the small buisness owner becuase if your website content becomes outdated or remains 100% text based, you run the risk of being out-ranked by a competitor in the search engine results pages.

For example, assume you own a hardware store and someone conducts a search online for ”how to patch drywall.” Let’s also assume that your website has a page titled, “how to patch dry wall.” Putting aside some other important factors for the moment, it’s safe to say your page would rank high for that particular search. What if you knew that in a year’s time that people would be searching for that same information, only this time they would be searching, “video on how to patch dry wall?” What if your website remained the same in that year’s time? Worse even still, what if another website was launched and posted a video on their site that showed people how to patch dry wall holes? Do you still think the search engine and the user would select your static website first? Most likely the answer is no. It is important to understand how search engines are treating different online content types. Make sure your website offers content in various formats.

Contact www.searchengineconsultants.biz to learn more about optimizing your website’s content so search engines recognize your site as a leader in your field.

Was ist daran so besonders?

Also: Aufgewacht!!!

Spring has sprung and a new version of GoldMine has been hatched. Version 8.5 has several enhancements and features to make GoldMine even better at management your leads and providing consistent customer service.

GMPE 8.5 empowers users with information and improves user productivity with feature improvements and product additions that include:

Universal Search: provides an easy searching mechanism into GoldMine data. With Universal Search users may quickly search for information stored in activities, emails, linked documents, notes, knowledge management, as well as other GoldMine modules.

Preview Panes: enables a quick view into activities, emails, details and linked documents via these contact record tabs.

Case Management: this module has been improved with capabilities that allow additional column headers to be exposed in the case list view, and enabling single case to be linked to multiple contacts. Also, history records are created for reassigned, escalated, abandoned and resolved cases, and emails messages sent when viewing a case are automatically linked to that case.

Opportunity & Project Manager: these user interfaces have been redesigned for better usability by adopting the contact manager UI capabilities introduced in GMPE 8.0.

Email Center: user interface has been improved, as well as, SSL connections and the IMAP protocol are supported for more security and better interoperability with other email clients.

Activity Management: new pending RSVP folder is available in the Activity List, individual activities can be printed or copied to other applications, and the Task folder exposes the opportunity or project name so users can navigate directly to the record.

Details Information: four additional fields have been added to the detailed information.

Contact Search Center: users can search on both primary and additional contacts, email and website columns are exposed in the search results, and a wildcard (%) is available for matching partial names of contacts and companies.

GMPE 8.5 is more easily administered with new product enhancements such as:

Unattended install: GoldMine administrators can enable an unattended installation of GoldMine so users don’t have to intervene, thus removing version lock issues and helping free up administration time.

Automatic Upgrades: automatically pulls upgrade versions / files to perform upgrades after GMPE 8.5 installation.

Lookup List / Cross-Field Validations: enables a lookup list to change based on the value of another field.

Account Management: new relationship builder includes tools for managing relationships between records.

Business Processes: automated processes can create cases and macros have been added to the custom toolbars.

Compatibility Updates: GMPE 8.5 supports Microsoft SQL Server 2008, 32-bit & 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2008 and the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003.

“Based on eye-tracking studies, we know that people tend to scan the search results in order. They start from the first result and continue down the list until they find a result they consider helpful and click it — or until they decide to refine their query.”

De video is real-time.

Universal Search

I know I am kind of a dork when it comes to Search engine optimization (SEO). I subscribe to a lot o

I know I am kind of a dork when it comes to Search engine optimization (SEO). I subscribe to a lot of SEO blogs and newsletters and try to stay up to date on all of the latest SEO news and gossip. I guess I just assume that everyone has the same addiction, so when I make a statement about the Google algorithm changes that began in the beginning of this year and people look at me like I’m crazy, I wonder why no one else seems to know about this?? I want to share my resources and spread the word. I would love to know what other people think about these changes and wonder what types of alterations SEO professionals will be making to their services.

The following video with Bruce Clay: “Ranking is Dead” from the 2008 Pub Con in Las Vegas provides a great overview of what I found to be the most significant changes in search results and Page Rank.

In Conclusion:

I don’t have a full understanding of what’s what in the way of terms. What I do understand is that Google has made a major advancement in technology and the way search results are returned. There is a Universal Search system that blends listings from video, images, news, books and local listings into their main web search results. Crawlers are now able to convert soundtracks to text, pull text out of flash files and jump into the middle of videos. They are using IP addresses, third party cookies and other things to track search history and provide more relevant results based on past inquiries, causing results to be biased. Demographics also contribute to the bias of our search results.

What does this mean for me?

First of all, I think it’s time to invest in a web cam! It sounds to me that video is going to be a standard for SEO. If I want to get those top results, my chances will be a lot less likely without video(s) on my website. (It’s important to make sure you use keywords in your video titles, descriptions and tags.)

Being a Virtual Assistant, demographics biasing the results may impact me. I will just have to continue to work on getting traffic to my website from inbound links.

All in all, I think it will be very interesting to see what 2009 brings us in the way of Search Engine Optimization. Just when we finally think we have a grasp on it, the search engines outsmart us!
