“Each time I return to this place I am reminded of its profound impact on my life and I feel encouraged that its purpose remains unchanged. To create a better society to the highest standards of teaching and innovative research.

I have known the University of Auckland as student, and chancellor, and as part of a family that has a long history in the property industry. It’s an industry whose life-blood has been nourished by graduates of the university since it introduced its first diploma for the profession seventy years ago.

Unlike when I was a student, government today funds less than half of the university’s operating costs. In our changing world private investment in education is vital to produce globally competitive graduates. Enhancing education and research brings wide-ranging benefits for society, as well as the economy. And so, the Department of Property is establishing the Property Partnership Fund. Headed by alumni and the profession’s leaders to lift our programs to the next level of excellence. Twenty years ago the Department was established with a vision for a developing industry. The new century brings new aspirations for the Department and our aspirations. I am asking fellow alumni and the profession to become partners in our vision and contributors to its achievement.”

UniServices wins business excellence award

Auckland UniServices Ltd has chalked up a major win in the Vero Excellence in Business Support Awards.

The University of Auckland’s technology transfer company beat five other finalists to clinch the “Large business over $10 million turnover” category.

The awards recognise contributions in providing quality products and services, making life easier for business owners. Entrants are independently evaluated by the New Zealand Business Excellence Foundation using international criteria designed to showcase best practice.

Auckland UniServices Ltd, wholly owned by The University of Auckland, is the largest technology transfer company of its kind in Australasia. It manages the University’s intellectual property and is responsible for all research-based consultancy partnerships and commercialisation.

UniServices’ annual revenues exceed $100 million and it employs 750 staff. It has created more than 100 new licences in the past five years based on University of Auckland inventions. In the same period its start-ups have attracted $226 million from global investors.

“We are both elated and honoured to receive this award,” says UniServices CEO, Dr Peter Lee. “We were placed ahead of recognised brand names such as Kiwibank, Fuji Xerox New Zealand, Bartercard, Maclean Computing and the Interface Financial Group.

“The award is a great recognition for UniServices: a company in the knowledge economy, committed to New Zealand and Kiwi companies.”

Michael Daniell, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, has joined The University of Auckland Council.

He has been appointed by the Minister for Tertiary Education for a period of four years.

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare employs more than 2000 people world-wide, including many University of Auckland graduates, and is a leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of innovative medical devices. Its products and systems are sold in more than 120 countries, earning revenue of around $500 million annually.

Mr Daniell received his Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical engineering with honours from the University in 1979.

He joined Fisher & Paykel as a product design engineer. He served as technical manager and general manager before being appointed to his current position in 2001.

In 2009 the New Zealand Herald made him its New Zealander of the Year in Business.

The University’s Chancellor, Roger France, said: “Mr Daniell’s background and experience as the Chief Executive Officer of one of the country’s great international high tech success stories, itself a major employer of graduates, will be enormously valuable to Council and the University.”

Te Toka Kāmaka o Waiparuru

The soul of The University of Auckland Business School.

In the entrance of the Owen G Glenn Building of The University of Auckland Business School stands a sculptural artwork that embodies a thousand years of traditional thought on life and knowledge.

The centrepiece of the artwork is the Pounamu Kahurangi, a rare form of jade or greenstone blessed with the name Te Toka Kāmaka o Waiparuru. It is the mauri or life essence of the Business School and its wairua or spirit, protects traditional Māori values in all ceremonies that take place in the building and its environs, and also the values associated with higher learning and knowledge.

Te Toka Kāmaka o Waiparuru represents the strength and solidity of the School, symbolically linking manuhiri or visitors, students and staff, the past and the present and the North and South Islands.

In Māori, toka moana refers to a staunch rock in wild seas and kāmaka is a foundation stone; Te Toka Kāmaka being the foundation of great value, symbolically reflecting the links between sea and land with sacredness and power. Waiparuru, commonly known as Grafton Gulley where the Business School is located, is the valley and stream that once tumbled down to the Waitematā Sea. The building receives its mana or power from the valley and cascading waters, while at the same time giving mana back to Waiparuru.

Pounamu is highly valued in Aotearoa New Zealand for its intrinsic tapu or sacredness and vitality. It is treasured for its strength, durability and beauty. Jade is also regarded the most noble of gems in Chinese culture. It is said to possess the five essential virtues of Chinese philosophy: compassion, modesty, courage, justice and wisdom, qualities that are foundational in Māori thought also.

The body of the sculpture, depicts “He tangata, he rangatira”, a high ranking rangatira or leader wearing a ceremonial korowai or cloak, its shoulders of a softer serpentine stone support the treasured pounamu as the most sacred part of the human body, the roro or brain. The sculptural piece was made by two Māori artists, a master pounamu carver, Mike Mason, and artist designer Carin Wilson.

The Business Wall – Owen G Glenn building

The Business Wall, located on Level 0 of The University of Auckland Business School’s Owen G Glenn Building, was completed in December 2008. The 50m-long installation presents students with a visual celebration of New Zealand’s enterprise culture, from the first Māori-European contact and colonisation to the sophisticated South Pacific nation of today.

In a series of illuminated panels the Wall documents the transformations resulting from technological innovation, advances in knowledge and the globalisation of business.

Featuring companies active in a range of industries – from DB Breweries, Farmers Trading Company and Zespri to Tait Electronics, Fletcher Construction and AJ Hackett – it charts New Zealand’s evolution into a land of confident, creative enterprises making their mark on the world stage.

Vision and plans

Our aim is to be one of Asia Pacific’s foremost business schools – to develop graduates, knowledge and ideas that enhance the productivity, growth and global competitiveness of New Zealand enterprise.

In order to achieve this vision, the faculty will:

Propagate the Business School’s entrepreneurial mindset across the University.
Develop a new curriculum – one that is flexible and scalable, that focuses specifically on innovation and commercialisation, and which builds an entrepreneurial mindset to support the transformation process.
Forge visionary partnerships with business and investment communities to ensure that the experiential learning opportunities that are essential to real learning about wealth creation are available to all who wish to embark on this journey.
