McCain Adviser: Sarah Palin Uninformed on Hispanic Issues; Quits Interviews Twice

Sarah Palin, feeling unprepared, pulled out of a Univision interview that John McCain wound up doing by himself.

A top adviser on Hispanic issues to John McCain’s presidential campaign said Sunday that a joint interview with McCain and Sarah Palin planned for Univision last fall had to be canceled because Palin was unprepared to discuss Latin America policy.

“She did not feel comfortable speaking about issues regarding Hispanics and Latin America,” GOP consultant Ana Navarro told Univision anchor Jorge Ramos in an interview. “Those are not topics that come up frequently in Alaska. So she asked to cancel the interview and, unfortunately, you were already there.”

With both McCain and Barack Obama aggressively courting the Hispanic vote, each sat for multiple interviews with Ramos, whose evening news broadcast on the Spanish-language channel draws millions of viewers.

Both presidential candidates also agreed to a joint sit-down with their running mate. But on Oct. 9, the day that McCain and Palin were to face Ramos together outside of Milwaukee, only the Republican presidential candidate sat for the interview.

A campaign source familiar with the events leading up to the interview described it as a near-crisis situation, with McCain officials worried that Ramos would say on the air that Palin wasn’t appearing because she was not capable of discussing Hispanic issues — a charge disputed by one current Palin aide.

“Initially, campaign staff was suggesting we tell Univision there had been a scheduling conflict and have only McCain do the interview,” said the source. “I could not see how this would not be worse, though, because McCain and Palin were doing a joint rally in the outskirts of Milwaukee and the interview was to be conducted immediately after in the same arena.”

So, this source said, “we told Jorge Ramos the truth: She was not briefed, not familiar with the issues and just was not comfortable giving the interview.”

Part of their fear stemmed from the fact that it was the second time campaign officials had to cancel the joint interview session, according to two McCain sources.

Originally, McCain and Palin were to do a joint interview with Ramos in the days immediately after the September convention. But Palin, feeling unprepared, pulled out and McCain wound up talking to Ramos by himself in Colorado Springs.

After the campaign had to again put only McCain on with Ramos, the candidate intervened, according to Navarro.

“At that point, John McCain asks me to start traveling with her, to brief her on those issues, and to have that interview — so that she would feel comfortable speaking [about Hispanic issues],” she told Ramos Sunday.

Later in October, Palin would ultimately be interviewed by Ramos, at which point she admitted that she did not know how many illegal immigrants there were in Alaska.

Navarro now says that Palin was not ready to be president and was uninformed on Hispanic issues.

“Look, I think that, frankly, she does not understand issues concerning Hispanics and Latin America,” the Florida-based consultant said Sunday. “She is from Alaska, which is quite an isolated and faraway state. I don’t know how much you know about Alaska, but I don’t know very much about Alaska’s issues. So I didn’t think that briefing her on issues was something I should apologize for or feel badly about.”

Asked why she was going public, Navarro said: “I am uncomfortable with Sarah Palin. I have nothing against her. I’ll say she’s a very talented woman. Yet I think she owes John McCain her gratitude and loyalty. Let’s be clear: Today she is a rich and famous woman thanks to John McCain, who chose her. I think it’s not elegant. But of course, I know melodrama and soap operas sell books, not boring stories.”

While not disputing that the interviews were canceled, Palin aide Jason Recher said it was McCain’s advisers who made the decision — and not because she was unfamiliar with the issues but out of concern that she was not well-versed with McCain’s views on Latin American policy.

By Recher’s account, Palin was ready and willing to do the interview.

“The whole point of Ana Navarro being there was not to prep on Hispanic issues. he whole reason for her being there was to prep on John McCain’s stance on Hispanic issues,” said Recher, who traveled with Palin during the campaign and is now with her on her book tour.

When Palin finally did talk to Ramos, Recher recalled, McCain’s top advisers were “over the moon” about her performance.

Hace un tiempo, Joan Sebastian ofreció un concierto en Guatemala; donde las hermanas Esther, Margareth y Emilia Lanuza fueron sus teloneras. En dicho concierto, el señor raboverde posó sus ojeras sobre la más joven de las tres; Margareth, quien ese entonces tenía 17 años. Ni lenta ni perezosa, la familia Lanuza aprovechó la invitación de Joan de ir a México a pasear. Dicho paseo también incluía en su agenda la discusión de la futura carrera de las hermanas. Así que tanto las tres chicas como su padre, Edwin, fueron a la Ciudad de México.

Pasado cierto tiempo, Edwin y Emilia se regresaron a Guatemala. Cierto tiempo después, viene lo que muchos consideran como un plan publicitario que beneficiaría a las Lanuza. Y es que Edwin acusaba públicamente a Joan de secuestrar a sus hijas en México. Múltiples apariciones del señor Lanuza en las principales televisoras hispanas se procedieron a dichas alegaciones. En varias de ellas se le ve llorando y pidiendo que regresen. Emilia expresó que Joan les ofreció como carnada que fueran a México a discutir el futuro de su carrera. Estando allá, de pronto los planes cambiaron y Joan les ofreció en su lugar que fueran sus coristas. Las chicas dijeron estar dispuestas a empezar desde abajo y a medida que pasó el tiempo, ya ni eso. Emilia compartía esta anécdota mientras lloraba con intensidad.

Mientras tanto, Margareth y Esther gozando de la fama. Eran seguidas a todos lados por los paparazzi y se les veía muy felices de compras por todo México. Se transportaban en un vehículo a nombre de José Manuel Figueroa (nombre real de Joan Sebastian).

Por su parte, José Manuel cuestionó el talento de las chicas: “Ellas… Yo no las conozco… No las conozco como cantantes, no las conozco como actrices. No sé que hacen, no sé si bailan bonito no sé que hacen”.

Escándalo TV

Hace un par de semanas, las hermanas se presentaron en el programa Escándalo TV de la televisora Univisión en Miami, Florida. Yo, por casualidad prendí la tele y violá. Me enteré de todo el rollo ahí. Ni sabía que todo esto estaba pasando.

En Dicho programa, las chicas hablaron de todo. Se le preguntó a Margareth si ella estaba comprometida con él, pues se rumoraba que Joan le había dado un anillo de compromiso. Ella admitió haber recibido un regalo muy costoso de parte del abuelito (a pesar de que su padre le dijo que no lo hiciera), el cual de hecho sí es un anillo, pero no de compromiso. Esclareció que cuando el idilio empezó, ella tenía 17 años, pero ahora ya cumplió los 18. Se le preguntó que si estaba enamorada de él y dijo que sí.

También aprovecharon dicha visita para promocionar su nuevo sencillo “Amor color de rosa“, el cual aseguraron va dedicado al viejito. Este sencillo marca el inicio de la carrera internacional de las Lanuza como un dueto ya de manera oficial. En Guatemala, su “carrera” era como la de cualquier otro guatemalteco, algo súper informal y usando covers de otros artistas. A veces eran las tres, a veces dos, a veces una.

Su carrera

Desde ese entonces se han dedicado a promocionar dicho sencillo en México y entraron nada más y nada menos que por la puerta ancha, a través de TELEVISA. Ahora es cuestión de que el público les dé apoyo. Si eso llegara a suceder, pues estas chicas ya tienen una carrera por delante. Si no, lograron lo más díficil, esa primera y auténtica primera oportunidad de darse a conocer, que muchos artistas nunca llegan a poseer.

Fiasco en el Concierto de Joan Sebastian

Pues se me fue la onda y no escuché cuando fue este concierto. Creo que fue anoche o algo así. El asunto es que para variar, Esther y Magareth fueron al concierto del Don y “vaya sorpresa”, la prensa estuvo ahí para capturar el momento. Se veían muy animadas al entrar. Las hubieran visto al salir, ya no se veían tan contentas. Resulta que Joan no hizo acto alguno que denotara que ellas estaban entre el público, las ignoró por completo. Las chicas se veían molestas, un tanto incómodas al salir y ya no quisieron dar declaraciones. Muy contrario a la actitud que tenían a su ingreso.

Y hoy, las chicas aparecieron de nuevo en Escándalo Tv dando declaraciones en vivo desde México y aseguran que quieren dejar este escándalo atrás y continuar con sus carreras. Se les preguntó acerca del incidente del concierto, a lo cual Esther respondió con Cantinfladas. Dijo una y otra vez la misma cosa y al final no dijo nada. Pero insistía que ya no querían hablar del asunto.

También el programa “El Gordo y La Flaca” hizo mención del chasco al cual las Lanuza se sometieron al presentarse a “apoyar” al cara de pasa en su concierto. Lily y Raúl anunciaron que las hermanas se presentarán en el programa dentro de dos semanas. Así que parece que el drama no termina aquí.

Univision Interactive Media anunció su asociación con YouTube para ofrecer videos de Univision de corta y larga duración en el sitio YouTube.com.

“Esto es un hito muy importante ya que es la primera vez que un programa de Univision se encuentra disponible en Internet fuera de nuestros propios sitios, tanto en formato de corta como de larga duración,” dijo Kevin Conroy, presidente de Univision Interactive Media. “Esta sociedad extiende nuestro alcance de manera excepcional y refuerza nuestra posición como el principal proveedor de videos en español para los hispanos en Estados Unidos, con una programación sin precedentes en todo sentido”.

“Claramente, Univision se estableció como el principal proveedor de contenidos televisivos en español, aquí, en Estados Unidos”, dijo Chris Maxcy, director de asociaciones para contenidos de YouTube. “Este acuerdo constituye un gran logro para nosotros y marca una de las asociaciones más completas para contenidos de larga duración que hayamos cerrado hasta ahora. Hay una gran demanda para ver contenidos en español en YouTube. Con esta nueva asociación, nuestra comunidad en Estados Unidos podrá mirar y disfrutar en nuestra plataforma los programas de corta y larga duración de las tres principales cadenas de Univision”.

La programación de Univision, TeleFutura y Galavisión se ofrecerá y se promocionará en el sitio electrónico de YouTube. El contenido se actualizará para incluir lo mejor de la programación, así como también un extenso archivo con una colección de programas.

Web video outlet Youtube.com is very busy now a days. The internet giant has partnered with the largest and most-watched Spanish speaking television channel in the United States, Univision, to develop a wide range of its programs available on the video sharing site. The agreement is nonexclusive and includes short clips as well as full-length TV shows from Univision’s three networks, Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision. YouTube said the two companies would share revenue generated through advertising.

In a second announcement today, YouTube launched YouTube Direct, whereby TV and online news editors can obtain video from so-called “citizen journalists” and even request such video be shot by amateurs seeking attention. News outlets seeking footage can announce it in a variety of ways, including via call-out videos posted at YouTube. When a YouTube user has video they think will interest the mainstream media, it can make it easy for editors, producers and journalists to contact them.

Youtube has truly evolved into a full service company engulfed with partnerships and new associations. We anticipate what new partnerships will come from Youtube in the future.

Today I accidentally watched Univision for the first time where everyday at 6pm, Walter Mercado tells you your horoscope. I didn’t even know I believed in horoscopes, but anyone wearing sparkles will make a believer out of me. This video doesn’t really do him justice. Today he was wearing a large pink sparkly cape. I don’t speak Spanish. The person I watched this with today told me Walter said that I’m going to have a lot of money and am very intelligent. Awesome.

HSN was crowing Thursday about the success of the high-profile chefs that hawk products on the network. We guess it’s no surprise that officials didn’t mention the tabloid headlines that Todd English made recently for allegedly jilting his bride-to-be.

During a third-quarter conference call Thursday, HSN CEO Mindy Grossman said that the network “marries the best chefs of HSN with our successful commerce platform,” citing English, Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Lagasse.

The home shopping network expanded its chef roster last with week with the premieres of cook/TV host/cookbook authors Padma Lakshmi and Ingrid Hoffmann as part of the channel’s second annual “HSN Cooks” event. Lakshmi is a host of Bravo’s hit “Top Chef,” while Hoffman does shows for Food Network and Univision.

“The combination of diversity of product, personality and programming resulted in a sales increase of 40 percent over last year’s event,” Grossman said.

HSN was able to strike a deal with Lakshmi and leverage “the tremendous popularity of the ‘Top Chef’ reality series” after talking to her in April about doing a line of cutlery, teas and spices. That Easy Exotic line launched and sold out during the cooks’ event, according to Grossman.

Not mentioned again in the call was English, who was recently in the news in his home base of Boston and in New York City when he left his fiancee, Erica Wang, at the altar the day they were supposed to get married in Manhattan.

Wang painted English as a rat in an exclusive interview with The New York Post. Days later, English filed domestic abuse charges against Wang in Boston, alleging that she hit him in the head with his own watch.

Sammy Sosa admits to bleaching

Wow, Sammy Sosa is sounding more and more confused by the day.

He has finally admitted to what we all knew – that he is bleaching his skin.

In an interview on Primer Impacto, a programme on the Spanish-language network Univision, Sammy said:

“It’s a bleaching cream that I apply before going to bed and whitens my skin some.

It’s a cream that I have, that I use to soften [my skin], but has bleached me some. I’m not a racist, I live my life happily.I want people to calm down and realize that I didn’t do any of this with mal intentions.”

Asked about the obvious Michael Jackson comparison, Sammy somehow doesn’t see the connection, saying:

“What happened was that I had been using the cream for a long time and that, combined with the bright TV lights, made my face look whiter than it really is. I don’t think I look like Michael Jackson.”

He says that his skin bleaching is a completely different kettle of fish.

“I respect him very much and may God keep him in his glory, but this is not the case with me.

I’m truly shocked that this has gotten so big. This has resonated more than the actual [Latin] Grammys.”

Oh, and if that was not enough for you, he has said that he plans to market the “miracle cream” which can only be bought in Europe.

“I’m going to market it, I’m a businessman.”

Lawd help us.
