“It’s mind blowing to see how hip hop has evolved from the beginning,” said Kool G Rap. “When I began in this business, I never could have imagined turntables like this. But it goes to show that great minds will continue to revolutionize hip hop and the DJ experience—that’s why hip hop will be around forever.”

I-play, Oberon Media’s publishing division and the world’s leading multi-platform casual games publisher, today announced Hip Hop All Star for iPhone™ and iPod® touch. In Hip Hop All Star, players scratch and spin their way to DJ stardom to the tune of an original and exclusive playlist from 12 top-selling hip hop artists, mixing classic old-school hip hop with the new-school hip hop.

Hip Hop All Star’s breakthrough real-time scratching technology and flawless touch-screen controls provide innovative and addicting game play from the block party all the way to the hippest clubs. Players must tap notes in rhythm with the music and scratch the turntables to perform in five different party locations. With WiFi and BlueTooth Multi-player modes, players can challenge friends to real-time DJ battles and use power ups to bust out scratch tricks and wow the crowd (and their friends). Once the first 12 songs are mastered, players can increase the set list with new downloadable tracks as they continue to spin, scratch and rock the party. In addition, the best of the best can earn DJ bragging rights by sharing their high scores with friends using the game’s Facebook Connect feature.

The Hip Hop All Star set list will feature original tracks from Busta Rhymes, Kid Cudi, Mya, Ray J, Greg Nice, Jason Nevins, Slim Thug, Kool G Rap, Unk, DJ Eclipse, DJ Serafin, DJ Eddie James, Ike Lees, and Scarchild. They will be joined by DJ Green Lantern, one of the most successful and critically acclaimed DJs, and host of Hip Hop Nation on Sirius Satellite Radio.

After attacking urban radio with his club track and dance craze “Walk It Out,” DJ/rapper Unk made the usual mixtape and BET appearances that built up to the big album, but he did it in such an incredibly compressed time that there’s every reason to worry his full-length debut is a rushed dud. Beat’n Down Yo Block isn’t a dud at all. With plenty of punkish, thuggish street music and a convincing, reverent track devoted to those no longer with us (“Thinking of You”), the album skillfully covers a lot more ground than expected. Unk has the charisma and swagger to deliver it all, plus the ability to write amusing rhymes, but more than anything he’s got the executive producer to pull this kind of hardcore Southern party record off, Big Oomp. Oomp is the man behind Baby D and his Off Da Chain album, a Dirty South cult favorite. The over the top but down in the gutter attitude of that album is also felt on Beat’n Down Yo Block, but this is a much slicker affair and unfortunately overstuffed. Whittle away four or five tracks that are redundant filler and you’re still left with sizeable album, with “This Is How We Do,” “Flatline,” and “Fresh Dressed” all blessed with that exciting “Walk It Out” magic. The syrup sippin’ “Slow It Up” and a couple “smokin’ dro” tracks take the party in a much more reckless direction, bringing back those Baby Dreminders and wearing that “Parental Advisory” sticker like a badge. While Oomp and Unk may not show any restraint with the long track list, they don’t show any restraint when it comes to delivering Dirty South weekend music. Seeing how Beat’n Down Yo Block is such a loud, hedonistic, and thuggish good time, that’s a fair tradeoff.

The design principle that I wished to engage with for my multiple emblem is the 3 or traingle presen

The design principle that I wished to engage with for my multiple emblem is the 3 or traingle presented in McNab. Within the novel the Sirens ofTitan by Kurt Vonnegut there is a triangle of relationships between Winston Niles Rumford, Beatrice Rumford, and Unk/Malichi Constant. Rumford was married to Beatrice who later bore Unk’s child. It is sort of like a love triangle, if not even a little more involved. Unk and Rumford are connected by the fact that Rumford predicts the course of Unk’s life leaving him partially bereft of self-control.

In McNab’s chapter on 3, there is a discussion of the male and female aspects of a triangle. She identifies and upward pointing triangle: as male. A downward facing triangle is then classified as purely female based on its similarity in shape to the pelvis, which is the definition of vitality and womanhood to McNab.

For my design I want a way to indicate the connection between the three characters while representing gender and the respective position of the triangle. However, the male female combination is usually combined in a fashion similar to this:

Instead I wish to produce an angl that represent both type of triangle, while only present on triangle.

For my emblem for light in Kurt Vonnegut’s the Sirens of Titan, I decided to use the design principle of 6 from McNab. However, when I reached the final stages of this particular emblem I found it slightly echoing the emblem I constructed for multiplicity. In my design, I created a grid of hexagons. As I discussed in my design section for lightness, the hexagon is the most efficient use of space of any polygon. The grid that it forms is redolent in nature because of this conservative and explotation of space. In each of the hexagons, I placed a name of a character. Each connected hexagon shares a relationship with the next hexagon. In the background then I placed a picture of space that reminded me of some of the descriptions of what it was like from the novel.

I used this format to emphasize how the lightness and compactness of the verbal texture of the word, pulled together and created the relationships between the characters. Each individual within the story was tied to another purely by the will of Vonnegut’s pen and mind. With lightness encapsulated in the hexagons, there is a triangle formed, which is what I believe echoed the emblem of multiplicity.

posted by: Sam

Well it’s no secret now, Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” was one of my favorite songs of the year. Believe it. And the video(!), I quite fancy that as well. Since YouTube has all the coding disabled I am unable to post it, so go check it out here.

Then(!) I found out the video was heavily inspired by the Bob Fosse choreographed routine led by dancer/actress (and his wife!) Gwen Verdon. I have to say, I think I may perfer the original moves.

Then(!!) I found this little gem. The same Fosse clip, only set to “Walk It Out” by rapper/DJ, Unk. It’s okay, I haven’t heard of him either.

So, last night Jamie and I got our boomkats on at the Townhouse.

The DJ played Pop Lock & Drop It immediately after Walk It Out (ie, Jansen wiles out.)

Jamie stopped dancing and just sat on the speaker like “What the hey is this nutcase doing?”

Tis’ how I do…

Best thing ever was Jamie later on…

Jamie: “So what is that drop lock pop? Lock pop drop? Whatever the hell it’s called!”

He butchered the name so much that I started messing up!

Me: “Well the drop pop…wait, dur-da-dur!”

We’ll work on it.

Downtown was beautiful today. Pictures!
