I finally got round to uploading an Unlock client to PyPi, the Python package repository.

I’ve had many people come to me to unlock their iPhone 3G and 3GS. It is extremely easy with the new iPhone software thanks to geohot. I will give very simple instructions on how to unlock any iPhone 3G or 3GS that has the software 3.1.2 installed (currently the latest as of the date of post). To unlocked your iPhone, you need to jailbreak it first.

The blackra1n application that is installed on your iPhone

1. Make sure your iPhone has been backed up in iTunes before attempting this. The backup process should save your settings and contacts.
2. Check what software your iPhone is currently running by going to Settings -> General -> About on your iPhone. Check to see what the “Version” says. If it is 3.1.1 then you should update your iPhone to the current iPhone 3.1.2 by going through the software update. If the software you are downloading through iTunes is not version 3.1.2, then this post does not apply to you.
3. Download the software provided and available by geohot by going to blackra1n.com. There is a Windows and a Mac version available.
4. Run the program that you just downloaded and “make it ra1n.”
5. Open up the Blackra1in application that was installed on your iPhone and select the packages you want. If you want to just jailbreak your iPhone, then just instal the Cydia or Rock application. If you want to unlocked your iPhone, then select the Cydia or Rock application AND the sn0w application.
6. Install the applications and wait for it to finish. When done, you should have a working jailbroken or unlocked iPhone 3G or 3GS using firmware version 3.1.2.

If you have any questions about this then I would recommend trying to find the answers online because I just use the software.

Kapitel 1 - Der Jailbreak

Kapitel 2 - Jailbreak ≠ Unlock

Jailbreak und Unlock sind zwei verschiedene Dinge, auch wenn eines nicht ohne das andere möglich ist. Durch Verwechlsung der Begriffe werden Nutzer immer wieder mit Fehlern, Problemen und teilweise sogar gesperrten iPhones gestraft. Man sollte wissen was man tut, bevor man es tut.

Katitel 3 - Der Unlock

Definition Unlock: Ein Eingriff in das Betriebssystem des iPhones, welcher die Beschränkung auf eine bestimmte Simkarte bzw. auf einen bestimmter Mobilfunkanbieter aufhebt. Hierfür wird der Teil des Betriebssystemes verändert, das Baseband (deutsch: Modemsoftware). Hierfür ist der Jailbreak die Voraussetzung.
Der Unlock kann auch durch Simadapter erfolgen. Dieser Eingriff in die Hardware des iPhones ist aber nicht zu empfehlen.
Das sagt der Rechtanwalt zum Unlock: “Strafbar allerdings ist die Entfernung des SIM-Locks und der Einsatz des iPhone mit einer SIM-Lock-freien Telefonkarte für den Benutzer/Eigentümer nicht, soweit dies ausschließlich zum eigenen privaten Gebrauch des Täters oder mit dem Täter persönlich verbundener Personen erfolgt (§ 108b UrhG). Die gewerbs- oder außerprivate Entfernung des SIM-Locks oder die Werbung mit Entfernungstools ist dagegen strafbar.” … siehe Grundwissen

Kapitel 4 - It´s all about the Baseband, Baby!

Definition Baseband: Das Baseband (deutsche Bezeichnung: Modem-Firmware) ist der Teil des iPhone OS der alles regelt, was mit Mobilfunk zu tun hat und ist damit auch der entscheidende Part wenn es um Simlock geht. Das Baseband besitzt einen eigenen Prozessor, eigenen Arbeitsspeicher und eine eigenes Betriebssystem.  … siehe Grundwissen

Der für den Unlock entscheidende Teil des jeweiligen iPhone OS ist also das Baseband. Das letzte BAseband, welches unlocked werden konnte, war das Baseband des iPhone OS 3.0 /3.0.1 (Baseband 04.26.08)

Wurde das iPhone auf eine neuere Version des iPhone OS über iTunes upgedatet, wurde mit der neueren Version des iPhone OS 3.1 /3.1.2 auch das Baseband upgedatet. Das Baseband des iPhone OS 3.1 / 3.1.2 trägt die Bezeichnung 05.11.07 ist kann noch nicht entsperrt werden.

Kapitel 5 - Custom Firmware

Um auf eine neuere Version des iPhone OS upzudaten, ohne das Baseband zu verändern, gibt es nur eine Möglichkeit! Die Benutzung einer ”Custom Firmware”. Die ”Custom Firmware” wird über das Pwnage Tool erstellt, welche das DEV-Team entwickelt und veröffentlicht. Da es das Pwnage Tool nur für Mac gibt,  können sich Windows Nutzer nicht ihre eigene ”Custom Firmware” erstellen. Der Windows Nutzer ist darauf angewiesen das Mac Nutzer eine erstellte ”Custom Firmware” zum Download anbieten. Es gilt zu beachten, das man solche ”Custom Firmware” nur von einer Quelle lädt, welcher man 100%ig vertrauen kann. Es ist möglich Schadsoftware in einer ”Custom Firmware” zu integrieren.  Die Downloadlinks zu ”Custom Firmwares” welche hier zu finden sind, sind sicher. Blog4i hat diese selbst erstellt und hochgeladen.

Kapitel 6 - ”Ein unbekannter Fehler ist aufgetreten”

Beim Aufspielen von Firmware auf das iPhone kann es vorkommen, das iTunes Fehlermeldungen ausgibt und das Aufspielen dann abbricht. Meistens handelt es sich dabei um Fehler die mit 16xx bezeichnet werden (1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604). Dabei handelt es sich lediglich um Verbindungsfehler, welche iTunes relativ willkürlich auszugeben scheint. Um diese Fehler zu vermeiden, kann es schon reichen den USB Anschluß zu wechseln, bzw. den Computer neu zu stareten. Das Tool iREB, von Hacker iH8sn0w, verhindert diese Fehlermeldungen zuverlässig und kann bedenkenlos verwendet werden sollten die Fehlermeldungen nicht verschwinden.  iREB Tool downloaden - hier

After the news of O2 allowing iPhone users to unlock their iPhones legitimately I thought hell I’ll try those shenanigans and so 10th November came and I signed up putting in an old O2 Sim Card hoping that it will make me legible, the first time I got to a message from O2 saying that they cannot unlock my phone as it may cause it to epically fuck up, a pile of bollocks I must say but then I called then up on the 11th only to be told that they cannot do it as I have not had my phone for the needed 12 months, why I do not know they just wanna be wankers, so I had to unlock my phone non-legitimately which caused problems with apps opening so then I had to sync all my calenders and contacts with the cloud. So all in all I cannot unlock my iPhone legitimately but in doing so I have embraced the cloud, which is pretty handy.

Anyway, I’ll find a more interesting subject later

Yes you read it right,  o2 in the uk will now unlock your iPhone for free.

BUT

If you unlock your handset and place a non-O2 sim into it, you will still have to honour the remainder of the minimum term on your contract.

Still not bad, might be something to do with o2 losing the exclusive rights to the device meaning Vodafone and Orange can now offer slightly cheaper deals.

Reasons I can think of why you should do it:

• Add value to your iPhone if you need to sell it
• No more hacking your iPhone it’s totally legit
• Firmware updates no longer have the possibility of killing your phone!
• It’s FREE

It’s a no brainer, do it now before they change their mind.

My wife was running OS 3.1 on the (now old) unlocked iPhone 2g, when I had this sudden urge to upgrade to newly available 3.1.2 last night. “Oh, that’s a child’s play, I’d unlocked it all by myself one year back, and have since been upgrading the new releases, this is going to be fine.” Overconfidence kills. Boy, it stuck at the DFU mode and asked for activation via iTunes. Just 2 hours back, my wife told me “to do whatever but nothing should happen to my data”. I was in for a hard time for not having thought and read the implications before taking action.

After consulting my best friend Google (google.com), and my iPhone advisor, dev team (iphonedevteam.org), and after spending 2 hours with them, I finally got hold of a pwnage tool that would unlock 3.1.2 with updated baseband. A sigh of relief. Wait a minute, it doesn’t work on windows, only available on a mac. WHAT THE … ?

Then I saw something – Blackra1n (blackra1n.com and yes, there’s no spelling mistake) that would unlock 3.1.2 with updated baseband for iPhone 3G and 3GS. WHAT ?? What about 2G ? Oh boy, I’ve got to try this.

I downloaded the windows version (blackra1n.exe) and run it. Just a simple application with one small dialog box that says “Let it ra1n”. So, I killed (can’t do kill -9 on windows yet) iTunes, iTunes helper, and everything related (like safari – yes, I use Safari on Windows, its my second best app on windows after iTunes).

So, then I plugged the iPhone into the USB slot and let it ra1n, and a few seconds passed. Nothing happened. What would happen in a few seconds ? Patience is a virtue, you know. But the phone rebooted, unlocked and jailbroken, all in a few seconds (less than a minute). It was the simplest and quickest unlock (and jailbreak) I’ve ever seen.

After it booted, there was a app called ‘blackra1n’ on the phone. I run this app and there was an option to remove this app from the phone without reversing the jaibreak and unlock that just happened. I  knew my wife would be happier in the morning when I’d tell her it all went pretty fine.
