Hello nice people who visit my blog,

So I just watched Untraceable. It seemed cool so I decided to watch and it’s a great movie. I probably say that of every movie I’ve seen, but maybe that’s only because I watch great movies
It’s like CSI or Law & Order and you know, the detective series, but only better. Also more gross, hehe ;P
I think I won’t be reviewing this, don’t know if I even can review films. I like watching them, and I think I’m becoming a filmfreak, but well… Just not my cup of tea

Now, which movie shall I watch next?

xoxo

FBI agent Jennifer Marsh (Lane) spends her days tracking down criminals on the internet. One day a new site shows up which displays a cat being gradually killed. The more viewers that hit the site, the faster the cat dies. While the FBI races to find the person responsible, the site escalates the stakes by going from cats to humans.

I believe it was Walt Kelly who said, “We have met the enemy, and he is us.” That’s pretty much what this movie is saying. It’s pointing a big finger right back at the viewer who gets a kick out of seeing death, torture, and human tragedy every day in movies and on the internet. Yes, it is preachy.

It’s also a bunch of stuff we’ve seen before. Many times. The FBI agent, Marsh, with a troubled past, her goofy partner, Griffin (Hanks), and the gruff detective who kinda sorta maybe has a romantic bond with the female lead. Then there’s the intricate killing devices straight out of the Saw movies, and a villain with an important moral message he wants everyone to hear.

As preachy as it is, there probably is an interesting point here about how easily people can remove themselves from violence and tragedy when it’s just a video on a computer screen. I have no doubt that if a website like that really appeared, it would quickly get enough hits to kill off the unfortunate victim. That’s not to say the visitors would be guilty of murder exactly, as the killer in the movie implies. Just a bad case of morbidity really.

Anyway, back to the movie. It’s not that dull, but it’s not that exciting either. The acting is okay, and it has a decent look to it. It’s just so by the numbers that there’s nothing to get enthused about. Unless you like seeing people killed in unusual ways. In which case, I’m sure you can find better examples of that on the internet.

Don’t let your 8 year old use the same computer you use for your secret FBI work.

10 – 3 for overall unoriginality – .6 for being preachy – .4 for predictability – .4 for boring characters = 5.6

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009): I had previously seen a whopping two films in theaters this summer—Star Trek and The Hangover—putting off countless others for future Netflix releases. When I read a few reviews that suggested G.I. Joe was passable summer entertainment, i.e. big and dumb, but not insulting, I used them to justify a trip to the theater. Let’s learn from my mistake.

Was it big? Sure, they visit Egypt and the North Pole and Paris and Washington, D.C., among other locales. Things explode. Bras push-up to their fullest capacity. Is it dumb? Yes, Channing Tatum is a charisma vacuum rivaling the esteemed. Is it insulting? That depends on whether you’re eight years old. Sadly, I am not, so the prospect of lining up the Joe and Cobra toys actors and enacting a huge, all-out battle as means for a climax isn’t that enticing, especially when so many of the plot lines converging for this battle are face-in-hands stupid. G.I. Joe should have appealed equally to people who grew up on the toys/cartoon/comic and kids currently growing up on the toys/cartoon/comic, but it’s the latter audience that defines the tone (and brainpower) of this film.

Prom Night (2008): A remake of the 1980 Prom Night in title and general conceit only, the 2008 version underscores the uselessness of PG-13 horror movies. Maybe if it had been remotely suspenseful or creative, the lack of gore and sex wouldn’t be as noticeable, but after a decent opening sequence, every scene in Prom Night plays out roughly the same. Here’s a character. Oh no, don’t go up to the suite. The killer’s going to get you! He’s there! I think he stabbed you! You’re apparently dead. Yes, upon further confirmation, you are dead. Near the end of the movie, the filmmakers skip all of that “suspense” and just reveal a dead body. Imagine if they’d done that the whole time. It would be a wildly postmodern ten-minute short film.

If there’s any reason to be mildly curious about Prom Night—again, fight the urge—it’s the casting. Between Idris Elba (Stringer Bell) and James Ransone (Ziggy Sobotka) from The Wire as detectives and Scott Porter (Jason Street from Friday Night Lights) as the loving boyfriend, it’ll trigger sympathy pains for the actors’ careers. But the most baffling choice is Johnathon Schaech as the killer. I’d recently caught part of Tom Hanks’ entertaining That Thing You Do! on television and wondered if I’d seen Jimmy Mattingly, the completely self-absorbed lead singer, in anything else. Lo and behold, he’s in this dreck. Unlike Elba and Ransone, he hasn’t done much to deserve better, but I feel sorry for anyone involved in a film like Prom Night.

Max Payne (2008): I’m going to call out Comcast’s on-screen guide on this movie. Not only did they generously give it one star of four, they called Mark Wahlberg’s performance “dynamic.” Is switching between being soul-crushingly dour, ineffectually angry, and tweaked-out traditionally dynamic? Granted, the last mode is at least entertaining in a so-bad-it’s-good way, which is what I expected from the whole of Max Payne, but the film is so relentlessly down that making it to the final act feels like a death march. Mila Kunis as a super-serious assassin? Ludacris as a super-serious internal affairs officer? Chris O’Donnell as a super-serious pharmaceutical executive? No fun to be found in any of them! The cinematography is intriguing at first glance, all floating snowflakes and Gotham-esque NYC skyscrapers, but even when it hits the Constantine-derived supernatural outbursts, I just wanted to get on a train and leave.

Untraceable (2008): Here’s the tagline: “A cyber killer has finally found the perfect accomplice: You.” Oh no! The torture-porn equivalent to the 1995 Sandra Bullock classic The Net and its online identity theft paranoia, Untraceable banks on the collapse of its external audience of Rotten.com enthusiasts into its internal audience of murderous voyeurs, thereby setting up an uneasy sense of ownership for these crimes. You see, you’re responsible. So what’s the easiest solution to this ethical dilemma? Don’t watch Untraceable! Diane Lane’s had far better performances; Billy Burke actually plays a cop named “Eric Box”; Colin Hanks is far more likeable on Mad Men; and the conclusion is overwhelmingly hackneyed. You won’t miss out on anything and you won’t feel responsible for the murder of innocent animals and people.

De voorbije twee maanden of zo:

Noise (Henry Bean, 2007). (**1/2)

Charlie Wilson’s War (Mike Nichols, 2007). (***1/2)

Tyson (James Toback, 2008).

Who’s Afraid Of Kathy Acker? (Barbara Caspar, 2007).

I’m Not There (Todd Haynes, 2007). (***1/2)

Leonard Cohen – I’m Your Man (Liam Lunson, 2005).

Raising Arizona (Joel & Ethan Coen, 1987). (****)

Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead (Sidney Lumet, 2008).

Grizzly Man (Werner Herzog, 2005). (*****)

Heavy Metal In Baghdad (Eddy Moretti & Suroosh Alvi, 2007). (****)

The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford (Andrew Dominik, 2007). (****)

Get Carter (Mike Hodges, 1971). (****)

London To Brighton (Paul Andrew Williams, 2006). Onderbuik-KO. (****)

American Movie (Chris Smith, 1999).

Vera Drake (Mike Leigh, 2004). (***1/2)

Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud, 2007). (****)

Gran Torino (Clint Eastwood, 2008). (***)

Pride And Glory (Gavin O’Connor, 2007). (**1/2)

Pollock (Ed Harris, 2000). (***)

The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974). Zie eerder ergens. Een filmbijbel. (*****)

The Collector (William Wyler, 1965). (***1/2)

The Panic In Needle Park (Jerry Schatzberg, 1971). (****)

Wallace and Gromit: A Grand Day Out (Ncik Park, 1994). (***1/2)

untraceable

he hunts. you watch. they die.

cyber space is now taking over our lives, we as humans are more intruiged when we see things that are out of the ordinary and especially when it involves torture of some kind. so when a web site pops up… killwithme.com everyone logs in to see what the fuss is about. the site imediately catches the attention of the cybercrimes unit and they are quick to trace it and shut it down, only to find that it pops back up but this time even more deadlier than before.

in a race against time to stop the killings the cybercrime unit soon become targets of the very killer they are trying to stop.

an interesting plot and it keeps you guessing till the end who and why this whole thing started but most of all it makes you think twice about whats really REAL on the internet.

I am sure some of the enjoyment came from the fact that I did go in with such low expectations. Seeing the trailer initially, I was expecting a movie in the Saw 3 or Saw 4 range, a below average film. On the other hand it wasn’t ground breaking and you’ve probably seen the same movie before just with a different title and different characters. I was entertained though, which is about the only demand I put on a film. The story does have a few things that push the “stupidity zone” as far as I am concerned, you will probably notice it on bridge scene at the end.

This movie was directed by Gregory Hoblit (Harts War, Frequency) and stars Diane Lane (Unfaithful) and Colin Hanks (Orange County). None of the performances are in the outstanding range. Everyone just kind of does their job in the acting category. This movie did look great on blu ray since the film is very dark in color. In all, this is one you may choose to skip, or if you have some extra time to kill, it is by no means unwatchable.

This has already been reported but I wanted to give an update from a story in the Associated Press over the weekend. Detectives say toddler Caylee Anthony most likely died on June 16 – the day Caylee’s mother, Casey Anthony, rented murder movies at a local Blockbuster store. We’ve all seen the surveillance photos so we know that she was in the Blockbuster Video that evening. The question remains…where is Caylee? And why did Casey rent these videos (Untraceable and Jumper)?

From the article:

Police retraced Casey Anthony’s steps on that day and spoke to the man who saw Casey, now charged with Caylee’s murder, just hours after the toddler’s death.

“No emotion, no tears and no regrets,” is how Casey was described by Blockbuster clerk Johnny French when she rented a movie about a kidnapper and killer.

New surveillance photos show Casey Anthony and her boyfriend walking into an east Orange County Blockbuster just before 8 p.m. June 16, hours after Caylee was last seen alive by Casey’s father at home.

The photos show Casey arm in arm with her boyfriend, Tonjy Lozaro, after they chose two movies to rent.

One movie was “Untraceable,” about a kidnapper and killer. The other was “Jumper,” which features a character who is a mother who abandons her five-year-old child.

“They came in, went out,” says French, who rented the movies to Casey and her boyfriend. “Brought the movies back on time just like everybody else.”

“They seemed normal and she seemed fine. If there was something wrong, it would have stood out. I just don’t remember them doing anything unusual,” saidFrench.

Casey’s phone records show she made seven phone calls in the three and half hours between 2:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. that afternoon, the time during which investigators think Caylee may have died.

Two calls were made to friends at Arden Villas Apartments. And Casey’s ex-best friend, Amy Huizenga, told investigators that Casey called her that day to say she needed to find a place to live.

A secret service agent, Jennifer Marsh, gets caught in a very personal and deadly cat-and-mouse game

A secret service agent, Jennifer Marsh, gets caught in a very personal and deadly cat-and-mouse game with a serial killer who knows that people (being what they are – both curious and drawn to the dark side of things) will log onto an “untraceable” website where he conducts violent and painful murders LIVE on the net. The more people who log on and enter the website, the quicker and more violently the victim dies.

untraceable

Jennifer Marsh (Diane Lane) is a widowed single parent living in a suburban Portland home with her daughter Annie Haskins (Perla Haney-Jardine). By night, she works in the FBI’s cybercrime division with Griffin Dowd (Colin Hanks), fighting identity theft and similar crimes. One night, an anonymous tip leads them to a website called killwithme.com. The site features a streaming video of a kitten being tortured and killed.

After the kitten’s death, killwithme’s webmaster (Joseph Cross) ‘graduates’ to human victims and makes their deaths correlate directly with the number of hits the site receives. At a press conference, the public is urged to avoid killwithme but, as Marsh feared, this only increases the site’s popularity. The videos are recorded in the killer’s basement and his various victims include a helicopter pilot (who is bled to death by injections of anticoagulant), a newscaster (burnt by heat lamps) and Dowd (killed by slowly increasing the concentration of sulfuric acid solution in which he is submerged).

At first it seems the victims were randomly chosen, but this is not the case. The first two victims were chosen because they were part of filming or presenting the suicide of a junior college teacher. The teacher’s unstable, techno-prodigy son, Owen Reilly, broke down and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. When released, he decided to prove a point (that the public is insatiable for the suffering of others), as well as wreak vengeance on those he felt had exploited his father’s tragedy. Dowd was killed because he came close to the truth of who the murderer was. Marsh, who figures this out, is soon targeted as well.

Captured by Reilly, Marsh escapes her death-by-mulcher by swinging out of the way while dangling from the ceiling. She ends up breaking free and gunning down the murderer just as the other police show up, Marsh kills Reilly on his own website. As the film ends, the website receives numerous requests for a video of Reilly’s death.

this movie is cool. i’m really surprised about that site thingy. hehe

however if someone knew how to do just like that. but not the same as the movie, whom the more people who logon and enter the site, the faster the victim dies. hahaha and not the same as the movie that it will record and show a movie. )

just simple…. just an ordinary style. just gonna locate people’s residence.

I was so intrigued when I saw the trailer of this movie last year. The more people logging on a specific website, the faster the victim of a murder dies. Basically it’s saying something about the power of internet and man’s unbelievable desire for blood and gore, among other things.

The beginning up until the climax was ok. There’s this sense of wanting the heroine to win against the bad guy. But when it got to the ending… I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. It was so OA that it felt so contrived and so unbelievable! It was such a stupid ending.

I give it 2 stars.

My Saturday went from awesome to blah in the span of an hour. I don’t know what happened, but my stomach and psyche went sour. Blech.

So what’s a girl to do?

This girl watched four, yes four, movies. Three new ones and one old, classic favorite:

Holly and Cat

I love “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” so much. It’s quirky and weird and although it’s cliche, I totally identify with Holly Golightly’s inability to commit to anything. In my case, it’s probably self-diagnosed ADD, but it’s more glamorous to describe it away as a case of the “mean reds.”

turns out... totally traceable

I liked Untraceable, but that’s mostly because I’m a little bit obsessed with serial killers. But mainly, this movie was filler while I read through some magazines that had been building up. (I hate that!)

So, I liked Interview more than I than I thought I would, but I can’t say I’d recommend it. I have a hard time with movies that basically have the same set. And while I appreciated the twist in the end, it wasn’t enough for me to recommend it. Steve Buscemi, per usual, was awesome. Sienna Miller? Um, she was ok. I’m not a big fan, but I loved her in Factory Girl. Then again, I love anything Andy-Warhol related.

Isn’t it absolutely ridiculous that I hadn’t seen Terms of Endearment yet? I mean, I’m 29 years old… how could this have happened? To further complicate things, I’ve always loved Shirley MacLaine, Jack Nicholson (reminds me of my dad… in the best way possible) and Debra Winger. So, surprise! I loved it. I cried my a*s off, but I knew it was coming so I think that helped. Anyway, I’m a sucker for honest mother-daughter -relationship stories because my own relationship with my mom is so intense and wonderful. So I’m thrilled that I finally got the chance to see this.

While I’m bummed I missed out on fully realizing my kick-ass Saturday dreams (and missed DW’s birthday party), the very fact that I slept in to 10 am today AND the fact that I was able to catch-up on some movies that were clogging up my Tivo means that it wasn’t so bad after all.

Next movies in my Tivo? Love in the Time of Cholera, Goya’s Ghosts (holy Javier Bardem!), Eulogy, Bottle Rocket (love!), Michael Clayton and Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (he’s my 9th-grade idol).

More and more people are exposing their lives via stream live video.

In Untraceable, the killer use stream live vid to indirectly murder someone. The more the hit rate the faster it kills.

Well, this was the third movie of my night yesterday and I was happy with it. Although not really straying from the formula, I was still along for the ride the whole time.

Diane Lane as a single mom who works for the FBI in computer crimes. They’re usually busting bootleggers and the like, while Colin Hanks is her partner I guess you could say. Pretty predictable from the start. It didn’t take long to realize that Diane Lane’s characters family would be threatened and her partner would wind up dead. Of course as I announced this loudly to my girlfriend she pointed out how the next shot of Colin Hanks was through a video screen from a security camera. “Foreshadowing!” she responded. You see, the killer in this flick streams his victims live on the net and the more that tune in, the faster they die.

Like I said, very predictable. This didn’t take away from the movie too much though. You watch enough of them and you can usually see what’s gonna happen. There’s some gruesome death scenes which is always a plus in my book and I think Diane Lane is quite attractive, which makes watching her a little easier. The acting is well done and the killer is a pretty creepy guy. I liked the idea of a killer streaming his crimes live on the net and how every time he did it, more and more people logged in too watch. It obviously is saying something about our society and the obsession with the net and its anonymity. Made me wonder if people actually would watch something like this online, or would I?
