EAN/UPC Dimensions & Tolerances (From GS1 General Specifications – 5.2.2.4.)

• X-dimension: Barcodes can be printed at various densities to accommodate a variety of printing and scanning processes. The significant dimensional parameter is X, the ideal width of a single module element. In Barcode Professional, this is specified with BarWidth property. The X-dimension at nominal size is 0.33 millimeter (= 0.013 inch).
  

  NOTE: GS1 Spec (5.2.2.4.1.) states some exceptions to this size for Characters 1, 2, 7, and 8 where is applied a Reduction/Enlargement on bars which compose those characters. Barcode Professional does honor this exception!

• Symbol Height:
  • For EAN-13, UPC-A, and UPC-E Barcodes the approximate height of the symbol, including the human readable information, at the nominal size is 25.9 millimeters (= 1.0 inch).
  • For EAN-8 Barcodes the approximate height of the symbol, including the human readable information, at the nominal size is 21.3 millimeters (= 0.8 inch).
• X-Dimension – Magnification Factor: In the past the term “magnification factor” was extensively used to specify the size of a barcode. This technique relied upon setting a nominal size (100%) that was directly related to a given X-dimension. Since January 2000, the more precise term “X-dimension” has been used to specify permissible symbol sizes
• Human Readable Text: The human readable digits shall be printed underneath the main symbol and above the Add-On Symbol. A clearly legible font shall be used for these digits (OCR-B font is recommended but NOT mandatory! Reasonable alternative type fonts and character sizes are acceptable provided the Human Readable Text is clearly legible) The height of the digits in the nominal size symbol is 2.75 millimeters (= 0.11 inch).

The GS1 General Spec at 5.2.4.7. provides a matrix for “Dimensions of Modules and Symbols at Different Levels of Magnification”. The following Windows Forms sample uses Barcode Professional SDK 3.0 for reproducing the margnification factor feature on EAN-13 barcodes. The code does some calculations for the X-dimension (BarWidth), the Symbol Height (BarHeight and GuardBarHeight) as well as for the font size.

Barcode Professional 2.0 targets Silverlight 4.0 and will target the recently announced Silverlight 5.0 (when it becomes available to the market in 2011)

Regarding the future features on Silverlight 5.0, one particulary interesting for our product is the “Postscript vector printing” which will allow LOB apps to take full advantage of it for generating high quality output report printings.

With these new versions, our Barcode Professional is one of the most complete packages out there supporting all Linear, Postal, MICR and 2D barcode standards.

Regarding the new symbologies, one that was interested to design and develop was MICR E-13-B (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition). In fact, this “barcode” is not made of bars but are specially designed characters and symbols intended to be used in financial markets and the like.

You will see that most MICR E-13-B offers from competitors are just font files (TrueType TTF, Open Type, etc) a.k.a. fontware products. And this could sound logic based on the fact that MICR E-13-B is mainly a set characters and symbols. However, we went for another approach and the MICR E-13-B solution you will find in our Barcode Professional product is ALL rendered/drew by using .NET Drawing classes!!!

Why did Neodynamic choose drawing each character/symbol with .NET Drawing classes and not just pick up a font for it?

The answer is because we know about the .NET dev needs our customers face every day. The barcode font file approach has the following cons:

• Fonts require registration in the Windows Fonts folder. You need to consider this when deploying your app. In addition, users can delete the font and break your app functionality.
• Fonts do not scale well
• Fonts do not support rotation

Sincerely, write the routines for drawing EACH character/symbol of MICR E-13-B was a big task using .NET System.Drawing (GDI+) for Windows Forms & ASP.NET editions of Barcode Professional, and not to mention for WPF & Silverlight where they are rendered using geometries available in those vector-based platforms. Anyway, we’re very happy with the end result and hope it helps you with your dev needs.

Working barcode modules for Joomla Virtuemart are sparse at best, so I  suggest you try Barcodes Deluxe EAN.

Some things to keep in mind:

• You must have Apache or Linux for auto install, otherwise you will have to install manually.    When finished add the barcode information into the products information. Barcodes are delivered securely via SSL to your new secure VirtueMart inventory system.

• Subscription to the unlimited barcode server is required for proper images to show up on your website.  However, one free year is included with the purchase of all software at Authenticated Merch at the time of this writing.

• Depending on your needs (internal use / client visibility / point of sale) you may need to register your barcodes for each product listed in your inventory.

If your client has products that need bar codes to be able to reach the retail market as required by law, shop around for a registrar.

It can get expensive as each color, size, etc of a product classifies it as a separate product and needs it’s own registered bar code.

A couple places like walmart (not many but large companies) require a GS1 bar code which is quite expensive.
