Damn you Cheyenne!

With no end in sight to the development of Stargate Worlds, Cheyenne Entertainment has been taking quite a bit of flak, being called the Duke Nukem Forever of MMOs, a ponzi scheme, and other names of varying levels of ridiculous and accuracy. Between the lawsuits and the delays of funds, you’d think there was no chance of the MMO ever coming out.

But this article has nothing to do with Stargate Worlds, the anticipated upcoming MMO by Cheyenne Entertainment. No, this article is about Stargate Resistance, a third person shooter that isn’t so much massively as it is multiplayer and online. Two out of three, and a 66% is technically a passing grade if you set your sights low enough. Stargate Resistance, whose website was just recently revealed above, is a third person shooter being developed by Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, the minds who did not bring you Stargate Worlds. It is set for release in Q1 2010 which makes just a few months until the first official delay.

I hope all of your first impressions were along the lines of “gee, they must be really short on cash,” because you would be 100% correct, on a hunch that even I had figured out before I hunted down this excerpt from CME:

“SGW will be worked on; but at a much lower rate compared to that of Resistance…That is until such a time when SG:R has become comfortable financially (enough) to then begin ramping up SGW again.”

You know, I’ve heard this quote before, and for once I won’t be quoting Mark Jacobs. I happen to remember a company back in 2006 called Ritual Entertainment that had high hopes for the Sin: Episodes series. The company, unknown to the community, planned to finance the second episode on the sales from the first, and subsequently went under after one episode. Ritual was sold to MumboJumbo and now works exclusively on casual titles.

I don’t want to say that Stargate Worlds is a lost cause, but I’ve seen this before, many times. Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment is not so much on the path to reinvention as much as it is at the fork in the road that can only be crossed under certain conditions. One of the following will happen:

1. This is the “everything went perfectly” outcome: Stargate Resistance launches, does well, and is used to fund Stargate Worlds and pay the employees. Stargate Worlds launches late 2010/Early 2011.
2. Going further down to earth: Stargate Resistance launches, does well, and Cheyenne takes a heavy look at Stargate Worlds and says “you know, this just isn’t working out.” Aside from a few more shooters, Cheyenne branches the Stargate brand to other forms of games, including real time strategy, console, and other areas of entertainment. Stargate Worlds is put on the back burner and is left there for eternity.
3. Hitting the pavement without a parachute: Stargate Resistance is either delayed to oblivion or launches to a less than stellar performance. Considering these losses, Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment either closes for good, is acquired by another company, or continues the same path it has been on for the past two years: perpetual delay.

A remake of Tamil hit “Nadodigal” film titled in telugu as “Shambo Shiva Shambo”. This is a triangle love story and the story line is three boys are in love with one girl. Ravi Teja, Allari Naresh, Shiva Balaji are playing the lead roles in this film. Priyamani is the heroine while Abhinaya is playing another important character. Produced by Bellamkonda Suresh, the film is directed by Samudhirakani who also directed the original Tamil movie. The film had completed its shooting. The producer is planning to launch the audio on December 15 and to release the film as a Sankranti gift.

The Uncomfortable Truth

With two albums out since 2007, Nneka is already an established singer, songwriter and rapper…in the UK. But, this powerful woman with roots in Nigeria and Germany is ready for the States to hear her roar.

Nneka has been compared to Erykah Badu, Mos Def, and Lauryn Hill. She’s played with The Roots, and toured with Lenny Kravitz. Her US album debut, Concrete Jungle, is set for release February 2, 2010. The album is full of soulful, meaningful and catchy songs that can’t be ignored. Her voice is “located between a place of yearning and rage.” Nneka addresses important issues through her music, and still manages to keep her audience entertained. To me, she’s the breakthrough voice we need for the new generation.

Her first released single from Concrete Jungle is “The Uncomfortable Truth.” Have a listen, you might hear something you didn’t expect and have a new favorite female vocalist.

Taking a break from heavier subjects, i’d like to discuss the upcoming album releases of some of my favorite bands. All of the albums are set to release next year, which will now probably be a pretty good one.

Neo-psychedelic pop group MGMT is planning on releasing their sophmore album, “Congratulations.” The follow up to their insanely popular Oracular Spectacular, it can be clearly seen from the album’s title that they are aiming high. Unfortunately, the band has stated that this album will have a darker and bleaker sound then their debut’s blissfully mind-expanding vibes. Regardless….come on, seriously, this is MGMT we are talking about; hipster dance-prophets of the next generation. It’s going to be good. Trust me. On the subject of hipsters! The original kings of hipsterdom, The Strokes, will be releasing a as of yet untitled fourth album in early 2010. Maybe after almost a decade, they will be able to follow up their debut Is This It with something close to as colossal. Well…that’s not necessarily true, I am partial to Room on Fire. But Room on Fire seemed like it was just a continuation of Is This It.  I’m sure we can all agree, this isn’t a bad thing, assuming First Impressions of Earth would be the catalyst for the bands much anticipated world domination. It wasn’t. Actually, it kind of sucked. Well, there WAS Juicebox, You Only Live Once, and Heart in a Cage, so i guess i can’t complain TOO much. Honestly, i have high expectations for this album and i think The Strokes will deliver this time. After a 3  years hiatus to collect their thoughts,  along with the releases  of Julian Casablanca’s and Albert Hammond Jr.’s Strokes-quenching  solo albums, i’m anticipating a much more mature Strokes. In an NME interview with Casablancas, the singer “described the new material as sounding like Thin Lizzy meets A-Ha.” hmm.

One of my favorite bands of all time will  be releasing an album in the coming year- they are itching to get into the studio. Yes, none other then veteran funk-rockers The Red Hot Chili Peppers. You heard me. Three years after the critically acclaimed Stadium Arcadium the LA rockers are already working on the next installment in their epic saga. Drummer Chad Smith has said the album will probably be released sometime around October, 2010. The drummer also mentioned possible new musical directions for the group, but didnt commit to anything:

“Also asked if Flea’s experience working with Thom Yorke might affect the band’s new material, Smith said the bassist had given him a CD of electronic beats to inspire him but that, at the moment, there wasn’t an explicit electronic direction.

“You never know. We’ve got songs with piano on them right now,” he added.”

Though the Chili’s have become progessively more pop-oriented throughout their career, i still love them, and this recent confession of possible shifting influences changes nothing.  Whether it be Freaky-Styley funk, or Jupiter-era radio hits, the band’s strength has always resided in its diversity of genres. Word can’t really express how much i am looking forward to this album.

In completely unrelated news: Rivers Cuomo of “pinkerton’s” Weezer was involved in a bus accident this weekend. He suffered a punctured lung and cut spleen, but is recovering well in the hospital. Hopefully he will be feeling better soon. Weezer recently released their seventh studio album Raditude and Cuomo’s recent injury is holding up the tour. For all you die-hard Weezer fans out there…the pinkerton thing was a joke. Sort of.

As we approach the release of the highly anticipated and long waited AVATAR on December 18th, I thought it would be great to be reminded of some of James Cameron’s other achievements over his lifetime. AVATAR marks the grand return of Cameron to the big screen after 12 years. If you are a younger, you might not appreciate the genius of Cameron and how he shaped an entire generation of film goers. His creations became not only are some of the most profitable films in history, but some of the most iconic films in the sci-fi genre. Jr.NTR’s new film ‘Brindavanam…Govindhudu Andharu Vaadele’ has begun its shooting in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu. In this movie Jr NTR is pairing up with Kajal. Dil Raju is producing the movie under Sri Venkateswara Creations banner and directed by Vamshi Paidipally, the director of film Munna. Prakash Raj, Mukesh Rishi, Sri Hari and Ajay are playing other major roles. Music is scored by Thaman S and cinematography by Chota K. Naidu.

After the tremendous success of “Magadheera” movie, all Mega fans expect another super duper movie from Ramcharan. All the Chiru and Ram Charan fans are expecting another block buster and record collection movie from Ram Charan Teja. To reach the expectations of audience, Ram Charan struggling a lot for finalizing the script for “orange” movie.

As per the sources from film nagar “orange” movie story is not fully finalized and Bhaskar is trying with various combinations to come out with a different and special movie. Hopefully by end of January 2010 the script is going to set for this movie.

Danish company AIAIAI and Kilo Design have teamed up to create the Tracks Series of leather headphones that were inspired by the function and design of the vintage iconic walkman headphones. These headphones feature 40mm driver units, a 3.5mm stereo plug, a 23 Ohm of speaker impedance and a 112 +/- 3dB of sensitivity. Additionally, the lightweight frame and leather earcups also add a luxurious touch to these headsets. The AIAIAI Tracks Series leather headphones will be available in 2010. No info on pricing at this time.

After the launch of BioShock in August 2007, the publisher of this game 2K Games have anounced that the sequel to this critically acclaimed game will be released on February 9, 2010. This first-person-shooter game will be available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows Platform.

The main character of the game will be played by first Big Daddy who has superior powers and intelligence over the other Big Daddies. Ten years after the BioShock event the women named Sophia Lamb takes control of Rapture. To maintain the order in the city Sophia created a Big Daddy like enforces called Big Sisters. Big Sisters abducts little girls from Atlantic Coast and bring them back to Rapture to create new Little Sisters. This leads him to form a partnership with Doctor Tenenbaum and the former CEO of the plasmid company Sinclair Solutions Augustus Sinclair, in order to defeat Lamb and her army of Big Sisters.

Micmacs à tire-larigot

Release Date: January 8th 2010 (UK)

Another oddball flick from Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of Amelie, A Very Long Engagement, The City of Lost Children, Delicatessen and of course, Alien: Resurrection.  I’m not a huge fan of his movies, TCOLC being the most interesting one of the bunch, but his movies are never boring.

Brooklyns Finest

Release Date: March 5th 2010 (US)

This looks pretty good. Directed by Antoine Fuqua in Training Day mode and has a great cast including Ethan Hawke, Richard Gere, Don Cheadle and Wesley Fucking Snipes! Apparently this was at Sundance 2009 where it got a few decent reviews (IMDB score is 8.9 from 322 votes. Not that IMDB is a great indicator.).

Season of the Witch

Release Date: March 19th 2010 (US)

I like Nic Cage. He’s almost become a parody of himself but I honestly can’t think of a flick he’s done in recent memory (that I’ve seen) where I’ve been bored.  Maybe Ghost Rider? But he always has some sort of ridiculous roadkill sitting on his head that’s always amusing.  He is occasionally a good actor.  And for his sins (both financial and for marrying Presleys kid), he’s the only big actor that continues to serve up genre flicks for our enjoyment.  And here we have another one, directed by Dominic Sena, and starring the mullet from Con Air.  The trailer doesn’t really explain anything beyond ‘having to take a witch somewhere’, but who cares?  Look at that hairpiece!

Note:  I couldn’t find a poster for this flick anywhere on the web, which seems odd since it’s out in 4 months.

I will pimp anything with Daniel Day-Lewis in it.  Even a musical with Nicole Kidman, Goldie Hawn Jr and Plastic Fantastic from The Black Eyed Peas.  He’s a fucking legend.  That is all.

Crazy Heart

I hate country and western music, but this looks good.  Jeff Bridges is a champ, and it’s apparently  generating a bit o’ the old “Oscar Buzz”.  Has Bridges been recognised by his fucking peers yet?  If he hasn’t, it’s a travesty!  He should have a little gold man in a bathrobe holding a white russian sitting on his shelf.

44 Inch Chest

I first saw this at our old haunt AICN, and it does indeed look good.  Ray Winstone kicks ass, and the cast is filled with great British actors. Not to be mistaken with Jarv’s favourite wank material, ‘12 Inch Schlong’.

This looks amusingly awful.  I assign one of you Yanks to see and review this when it comes out.
