If you’re an Adobe Photoshop user or any other Adobe product, you’ll notice that it’ll automatically check for updates once a month. On top of that, it will also create a folder by the name of  ‘Updater’ somewhere on your system(usually by-default at ‘My Documents’). If you’re not keen on checking for updates automatically and would like to stop the auto-creation of the ‘Updater’ folder, follow the simple steps below -

Disabling the Adobe Automatic Updater:

1. Start the AdobeUpdater.exe application from …\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater*
2. When the update screen appears, click the Preferences button
3. Uncheck the Automatically Check for updates checkbox and click OK
4. [Optional]You can also untick all the application to update if you’re paranoid

Disabling the auto-creation of the ‘Updater’ folder:

1. Navigate to …\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Updater* on Windows XP                                        or …\[username]\AppData\Local\Adobe\Updater* on Vista
2. Locate and open the  ‘AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat’ file in Notepad(drag and drop into Notepad window)
3. Locate the <DownloadDir>…</DownloadDir> tag. Change contents between the tags to something else(eg. nowhere)
4. Save and close the notepad
5. This should prevent Adobe Updater from creating the folder anymore because there’s no valid location to create one

*certain versions of Adobe products have numbers(eg. 5) in front of the folder name

When you start any Adobe product, the ‘Updater’ folder should not appear anymore and you can double check to see if your efforts above were successful. Start the AdobeUpdater.exe application again and see if it matches our one:

Congratulations! You have successfully disabled the Adobe Updater.

Es wird ja viel darüber diskutiert, ob man nun wordpress auf dem eigenen Server laufen lassen soll, oder einen Blog über www.wordpress.de hosten soll. Sicher hat beides Votteile und Nachteile. Wenn man den Blog bei wordpress online pflegt und Beiträge schreibt, muss man sich nicht viel um die Sicherheit des Blogs kümmern. Bei einer Installation auf dem eigenen Webspace oder Server, sieht das schon ganz anders aus. So ist man doch sehr verwöhnt, wenn man denkt, das nach der wirklich kinderleichten Installation das bloggen los gehen kann. Sicher ist sicher, heisst es in der Anleitung von wordpress. WordPress Blog werden odt als kinderleicht dargestellt, was nur bedingt stimmt und sicher eher auf die Blogs zutrifft, die man auf www.wordpress.com installieren kann. En el artículo previo (Actualizador 1era Parte) llegamos a definir la estructura iba a tener nuestro archivo de actualizaciones, ahora solo nos falta descargar esa información, parsearla y hacer algo útil con ella.

Recuerden que el formato a utilizar en dicho archivo será el siguiente:

ruta relativa y nombre de archivo : versión

donde la primer parte antes de caracter : es la ruta relativa tanto remota como local; y la segunda es la última versión disponible.
Veamoslo con un ejemplo que va a ser más fácil de entender. Suponiendo que mi programa consiste de los siguientes archivos:

Ahora veremos como podemos obtener la información que necesitamos de ese archivo:

Como verán, el código es bastante simple: descargamos el archivo de texto con la información de las actualizaciones (en nuestro ejemplo sería http://miservidor.algo/actualizaciones.txt), lo desglosamos linea por linea, y luego a cada una la dividimos mediante el separador que habíamos elegido previamente, en éste caso fue el caracter dos puntos. De esta forma tenemos por un lado la ruta relativa (incluyendo el nombre del archivo) y por el otro el número de versión, claro, esto por cada línea. Guardamos esa información en una lista del tipo Dictionary y listo el pollo, pelada la gallina.

El siguiente paso sería utilizar esa información para compararla con las versiones locales de los archivos equivalentes.

Lo que hacemos con éste método es recorrer la lista de actualizaciones (que obtuvimos online), tratamos de encontrar el archivo local correspondiente para cada uno de ellos y comparamos la versiones, por supuesto, solo en el caso de que exista localmente. Realmente no hace falta verificar todos y cada uno de ellos, con que encontremos uno solo desactualizado ya podremos podremos devolver un valor verdadero, que implica que existe al menos una actualización.

Vale la pena notar que en vez de:

No lo he hecho así por una simple razón. Me ha pasado que al publicar una actualización había algo realmente mal en alguna dll incluída, algo que cambie y no me percate que lo había roto hasta que un usuario me avisa. En estos casos prefiero volver atrás una versión para esa librería particular, simplemente modificando el archivo de texto de las actualizaciones, que tener que recompilar la dll asignándole una versión superior.

Otra cosa a tener en cuenta: es posible que en algún momento, necesitemos agregar archivos que no puedan ser versionados, al menos no como .Net lo entiende, por ejemplo, una imagen o icono. En este caso, en vez de asignar una versión en la entrada correspondiente en el archivo de texto de actualizaciones, usaremos un signo de interrogación ?. De esta forma, lo único que tendremos que verificar es que el archivo local exista, sino, se considera que hace falta una actualización (lo que va a implicar una simple descarga del archivo faltante).

Esta es la primera parte de una serie de artículos en los que voy a mostrarles como hacer su propio Actualizador para utilizar en sus programas. Todavía no he decidido de cuantas partes va a constar, porque en realidad no he planificado nada, así que si después terminan siendo solo dos, ¡quedan avisados de antemano!.

Comencemos

Por lo general, siempre que creamos un programa y lo liberamos al público, vemos al (poco) tiempo la necesidad de hacerle algunos retoques ya sea por la aparición de bugs (si, si, aparecen de la nada, no es que estaban y los pasamos por alto, jajaja) que nos reportan nuestros usuarios o porque queremos agregarle nuevas funcionalidades. Sea por lo que sea, una parte importante para mantener un software estable es la capacidad del mismo para informar la existencia de nuevas versiones o mejor aún, auto actualizarse simplificándole la vida al usuario.

Como ya habrán visto en gran variedad de programas, hay distintas formas de manejar el tema de actualizaciones. Hay que saber poner en la balanza que es lo que queremos: facilitarnos la vida nosotros, como desarrolladores, o simplificarle la vida a nuestros usuarios.

En un extremo, podríamos solamente comprobar un archivo de texto online con la referencia a la última versión. Ese número lo comparamos con el assembly local y en caso de ser diferente redirigimos al usuario a la página de descarga para que él mismo se encargue de todo el proceso (o le preguntamos mejor si quiere ir allí). Como verán, esto es muy simple de implementar, sin embargo, lo más probable es que terminemos molestando al usuario.

Por otro lado también he visto programas donde lo que se hace luego de comprobar la versión online, es solicitar permiso al usuario para descargar el nuevo instalador, es decir, la versión actualizada, dentro del mismo programa. Cuando finaliza la descarga se cierra el programa principal, se ejecuta el instalador y listo. Sin embargo hay un pequeño problema en este escenario, ¿qué pasa si el usuario no tiene permisos suficientes para instalar un programa?. También podríamos decir que no es lo mejor cuando queremos que nuestro programa sea portable, aunque en este caso hay algunos work-around para hacer un falso instalador que no escriba en el registro de Windows.

Si bien existen algunas soluciones ya integradas en .Net y de simple aplicación con Visual Studio, como ser Click Once, hay veces que requerimos de algo más personalizado y que se ajuste mejor a nuestras necesidades. Por este motivo es que he decidido mostrarles la solución que encontré yo para uno de mis proyectos, con esto quiero decir que no lo tomen como una solución universal, cada caso requiere un detallado análisis para poder evaluar cuál se ajusta más.

Para empezar vamos a necesitar dejar en claro que es lo que hace o debería hacer un Actualizador:

• Comparar versiones locales de archivos con algún repositorio remoto, y en caso de hacer falta descargar actualizaciones.
• Armar un listado de los archivos a medida que se van reemplazando para hacer un rollback en el caso que algo salga mal.
• Ser capaz no solo de actualizar otros programas, sino también, de actualizarse a si mismo.

Esos son los puntos básicos y necesarios sobre los cuales nos vamos a poner a trabajar.

Planteando la estructura

Nuestro programa va a contar con tres funciones principales:

1. Comprobar actualizaciones
2. Descargar actualizaciones
3. Limpiar restos del proceso

Más adelante pasaré a detallar un poco más cada uno de ellos, por el momento todavía falta definir como se van a almacenar las versiones en el servidor remoto.

La forma más fácil sería definir un archivo donde vamos a detallar la ruta relativa de cada componente dentro de la carpeta principal de nuestro programa y la versión online.

Por ejemplo:

Como verán, ésta puede no ser la mejor forma de hacerlo, primero porque ¿que pasaría si la ruta de acceso contiene el caracter - (guión medio)?: no podríamos separar fácilmente la versión de ella. ¿Lo ven?, entonces podríamos mejorar un poco esto. Pensemos en los caracteres inválidos para la ruta de acceso, así podemos tomar uno y tener la certeza de que no nos va a afectar al intentar separar ambas partes.

Como sabrán, o posiblemente no, el caracter : (dos puntos) no es válido para nombres de archivo, por lo tanto, no va a existir en una ruta relativa. ¡Cuidado acá!, si ustedes desean mejorar este programa y utilizar rutas absolutas, dicho caracter puede aparecer luego de la letra de la unidad.

Como se puede apreciar, el caracter | también lo podríamos utilizar.

Bueno, no nos vayamos por las ramas que después nos va a salir a perseguir Tarzán … estábamos buscando una forma de mejorar la estructura inicial que propuse para el archivo de actualización.

Como verán, ahora no solo es más fácil identificar los archivos y rutas, sino también comparar las versiones, e incluso terminamos con un texto más fácil de parsear. Se habrán dado cuenta que estoy usando texto simple por comodidad y para que les resulte fácil a los que recién empiezan, pero si lo desean, podrían extender esto para utilizar XML, JSON, o algún otro formato que sea de su agrado.

También es bueno notar que hay infinitas formas de darle un formato a este archivo, incluso podrían usar un separador compuesto de múltiples caracteres, pero recuerden prestar especial atención para no generar algún conflicto con los posibles nombres de archivos y rutas de acceso.

Se podrían estar preguntando por qué es necesario especificar la versión remota, si en definitiva se puede consultar una vez descargado el archivo mediante Reflection; bien, ahí radica el problema, primero deberemos descargar el o los archivos. Si nos detenemos un momento a pensar esto, puede ser que no todos nuestros usuarios cuenten con una conexión de banda ancha, con lo cual hacerle descargar todo el paquete que conforma la actualización y luego preguntarle si la quiere sonaría, cuando menos, ridículo. En el caso que no desee aceptarla, los habremos descargado inútilmente generando una carga innecesaria en nuestro servidor de actualizaciones y además, consumiendo recursos que podrían llegar a ser limitados o escasos.

Für das Mac OS und die Apple eigenen Programme gibt es die Softwareaktualisierung um immer auf dem neuesten Stand zu sein. Andere Hersteller bringen oft eigene Aktualisierungstools oder die Programme können selbstständig beim Start nach neuen Softwareversionen suchen.

Unter Linux werden die installieren Programme oft Zentral vom Paketmanager verwaltet. Solch eine Anwendung gibt es auch für das Mac OS.

AppFresh durchsucht den Rechner nach allen installierten Programmen und vergleicht die Version mit der aktuellsten Version aus iUseThis. Eventuelle Updates werden dann angezeigt, können teilweise automatisch installiert werden, und teilweise wird man zur entsprechenden Downloadrubrik der Internetseite des Herstellers verwiesen. Neben den schnöden Versionsinformationen hält das Programm auch grundlegende Infos über die jeweilige Anwendung bereit.

Diverse Optionen erlauben es Ausnahmen zu definieren, oder z.B. nur Programme aktuell zu halten, wenn dies automatisch möglich ist usw. Auch kann man nur Programme, oder auch Widgets und Plugins aktuell halten.

Eine weitere Option erlaubt es automatisch die eigenen Daten auf iUseThis einzustellen. Dazu muss man einfach seinen iUseThis Account angeben.

Auch wenn man die Updates lieber manuell vornimmt, bietet das Programm auf jeden Fall schon einen guten Überblick wo man denn überhaupt veraltet ist. Aber alle automatischen Vorgängen haben bisher bei mir bestens funktioniert.

Per passatempo ho scritto in questi giorni un piccolissimo script python che controlla se esiste una nuova versione per il browser Chromium per Mac OS X; in tal caso scarica il file .zip da http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/snapshots/chromium-rel-mac, lo scompatta e salva l’applicazione Chromium.app sul Desktop, in modo che successivamente l’utente possa copiarla dove meglio crede.

Das Updaten von vielen Addons ist keine einfache Aufgabe; MMO Minion wurde immer noch nicht aktualisiert, und bleibt für Mac-User nahezu unbrauchbar. Doch es regt sich was, aber im anderem Lager.

Der Curse Client scheint einen Nachfolger zu bekommen; noch handelst es sich um ein Preview, der Client ist im Alpha Status und wird erst in ein paar Monaten anscheinend zum Download bereitstehen. Viel mehr als ein paar Screenshots gibt es noch nicht. Trotzdem, der Client wird total umgekrempelt und soll an Geschwindigkeit gewinnen. Der Funktionsumfang soll erweitert werden, aber nähere Infos konnte ich noch nicht bekommen.

Und was geschieht  mit dem Mac? Tatsächlich befindet sich eine eigene Cocoa Applikation in Entwicklung, die Version 10.4 anpeilt und sowohl Tiger wie auch Leopard (ja bald Snow Leopard) User ansprechen wird. Diese Entscheidung verdient schon mal Lob, denn auch nicht Intel-Maschinen sollten nach wie vor unterstützt werden.

Und sonst? angeblich wird der Mac-Cleint nicht so viele Funktionen anbieten; da stellt sich doch die einfache Frage, warum? Wenn schon ein eigenes Entwicklerteam an einer Mac-App werkelt, warum nicht alles implementieren?  Die Screenshots, welche auf der Hauptseite in höherer Auflösung vorliegen, sehen ganz nett aus, insofern bin ich gespannt wie sich der Client weiterentwickeln wird.

Fazit: Ich konnte ein bisschen Frieden schliessen mit Curse, muss doch gestehen, dass sie langsam den richtigen Weg einschlagen. Aber ganz auf Kurs sind sie noch nicht, denn was ist mit Linux? Und wie gut die Programme tatsächlich sein werden, das wird nur ein Test zeigen können.

Es ist nicht einfach, seine Addons auf dem Laufendem zu halten, und ab einer gewissen Anzahl sollte man sich langsam eine Software-Lösung anschaffen. Leider ist dies zur Zeit nicht gerade einfach, WoWMatrix ist böse, Curse will eigentlich Geld verdienen, und alle unabhängige Entwicklungen stehen gerade aussen vor!

WoWinterface hat endlich nachgezogen, und mit dem MMO Minion Ersatz für die eigene Seite gefunden. Zwar löst man nicht das Problem, dass nicht alle Addons überall erhältlich sind, dafür besitzt das Tool ein interessantes Feature: Es lässt sich dank Module erweitern (also Addons für den Addon-Updater) und damit auch andere Seiten ansprechen als WoWinterface. Da die Modul-Programmierer auch die eigene Werbung aufschalten können, kann es sich schon lohnen auf diese Plattform zu setzen. So wäre es denkbar, dass Curse auch ein Modul für dieses Programm anbietet, mit der Funktionalität, auch so an die Datenbank der eigenen Seite zuzugreifen. Wichtige Kritikpunkte, die beim WoWMatrix-Streit entscheidend waren, sind damit beseitigt. Wir werden sehen, was daraus wird.

Jetzt aber mal zum Alltagstest: Minion ist ein Java-Programm, ist also Windows, Mac und Linux kompatibel. Bevor die ersten aufschreien, nein, Java ist tatsächlich besser als sein Ruf! Gerade diese App empfinde ich als ein äusserts gelungenes Beispiel. Aber gleich vorweg, die Applikation ist im Beta-Status, und fühlt sich auch entsprechend an. Es sind noch einige Fehler enthalten, und nicht alles läuft rund, damit muss man leider noch leben.

Die Installation erfolgt bequem über einen eigenen Installer, der auch die Java-Runtime-Version bestimmt. ABER ACHTUNG: Macht unbedingt einen Backup des Interface und WTF Ordners, dann seid ihr auf der sicheren Seite (Beta, nicht vergessen). Danach werden die ersten Module installiert, eins zum ent-Zippen und das WoWinterface-Modul. Danach scannt die App en Interface-Ordner nach bekannten Addons, was relativ gut gelingt, aber trotzdem Hilfe braucht, da sich Minion und Curse natürlich ein bisschen auf die Zehenspitze treten.

Nun zum Test: Minion arbeitet grundsätzlich gut, es schränkt den nicht bezahlenden User nicht ein und lässt die Addons auch in gewohnter Geschwindigkeit updaten (sorry Curse, da könnt ihr noch was lernen). Der einzige Unterschied zum bezahlendem Kunden ist die eingeblendete Werbung, die aber auch von normalen Adblocks geblockt werden kann (siehe Scrrenshot). Leider gibt es auch negatives zu vermerken: Seit Version 2.0 und dem neuestem System-Update von Mac Os X, kommt es andauernd zu internal errors wenn Addons aktualisiert werden: Sprich kurz und gut, das Teil ist für Mac-User im Moment nicht benutzbar (Windows weiterhin kein Problem, Linux hab ich leider keine Ahnung). Der Fix ist laut BugTracker schon fertig, aber er kann nicht verteilt werden, da die System-Admins zur Zeit in den Ferien sind. Höhere Macht, was soll man da sagen!

Fazit: MMO Minion hat immer noch riesiges Potential, ist grundsätzlich gut aufgebaut und mit dem Modulen besitzt es auch ein echtes Killer-Feature. ABER, und da kommt ein grosses aber: WoWinterface braucht immer ein bisschen lange um Entscheidungen zu treffen, zumindest kam es mir in der Vergangenheit immer so vor. Zwar hat sich die Seite meiner Meinung nach in die richtige Richtung entwickelt, aber gerade im Zusammenhang mit dem Minion und der Konkurrenz zu Curse sollten die Entwickler einen Gang höher schalten. Das Programm muss schnell aus dem Beta-Status raus, auch die lange Wartezeit für Mac-User ist nicht ok und sehr schädigend: Ja, wenn die Leute verreist sind, kann man wenig machen (besser organisieren!), aber das Problem war schon länger bekannt und hätte mit höchster Priorität bearbeitet werden sollen. Minion läuft grosse Gefahr, viele User anfangs gleich zu verlieren, und wird es schwer haben sie später wiederzugewinnen. Das wäre sehr Schade, denn der kleine Dämon hat es mehr als verdient …

Si trasferisce per cui dai “garage” di Nokia Beta Labs, dove si crea e si mette a disposizione per un periodo di beta testing, al sito ufficiale Nokia Europa, in sezione dedicata.

Oggi il Blog di Nokia Beta Labs, annuncia l’ultima versione beta di Ovi Maps (ex Nokia Maps+Maps on Ovi). Questa versione, la 3.0109, anche se disponibile ad ora in download per una sbirciatina presso i Nokia Beta Labs, rappresanta in realtà la versione di distribuzione finale salvo inconvenienti.

Per quanto riguarda il changelog:

Istruzioni per l’installazione:

1. Accertarsi di aver installato l’ultima versione di Nokia PC Suite sul computer
2. Scaricare ed installare il Maps Updater sul PC
3. Collegare il dispositico al PC in modalità “PC Suite” ed avviare il Maps Updater
4. Quando Maps Updater ha trovato gli aggiornamenti, scaricarli sul dispositivo
5. Dare i consensi per l’installazione sul dispositivo anche prontamente in tutti gli avvisi successivi onde evitare un “time out” d’installazione e far cadere la procedura senza ottenere il risultato
6. Il termine della procedura d’installazione verrà notificato con un messaggio sia sul PC che sul telefono. La procedura potrebbe richiedere del tempo, necessario a rimuovere i dati relativi alle versioni precedenti.

- Si noti che le versioni precedenti del Map Loader non funzionano per questa versione di Ovi Maps (nokia Maps).
- Se il dispositivo non viene rilevato dal Maps Updater avviare almeno una volta la versione 2.0 preinstallata sul dispositivo
- Potrebbe essere necessario un aggiornamento firmware

Per rimuovere la versione 3.0 di Nokia Maps e tornare alla 2.0:

1. Rimuovere la cartella “cities” e il file “qf” (praticamente solo con la rimozione della cartella cities, rimuoverete anche il file “qf” e tutto il resto) dalla memory card utilizzando il File Manager
2. Reinstallare Nokia Maps 2.0
3. Utilizzare Map Loader 2.0 per il download delle mappe di cui si ha bisogno

Acest post ii priveste doar pe posesorii terminalului mai sus anuntat. De cand am telefonul de aproximativ un an si jumatate a trecut prin 2 updateuri de firmware facute prin Nokia Software Updater. Solutia oferita de Nokia este perfect legala si nu anuleaza garantia terminalului. Totusi am detectat mai multe probleme.

La versiunea 5 exista probleme cu updatarea bazei de date din playerul integrat in telefon motiv pentru care ocazional isi ia restarturi. In rest merge OK. Daca nu ai apucat sa faci update pana acum nici sa nu iti treaca prin cap, caci te asigur ca nu pierzi nimic.

Cea mai stabila versiune cunoscuta a firmwareului. Problemele din music player au fost rezolvate. Sunetul a fost optimizat (zic ei). Au fost rezolvate niste probleme pe la meniu si la icoanele din meniu (zic ei). Merg fara probleme aplicatii semnate si nesemnate si prin procedeul bine cunoscut se poate instala certificatul EXP.

SUB NICI O FORMA NU INSTALATI ACEASTA VERSIUNE!!! Este piaza rea care va asteapta dupa colt. In aceasta versiune, momentan ultima au disparut foarte multe chestii. Calculatorul s’a evaporat (Nokia stie unde), cateva certificate de autentificare lipsesc cu desavarsire (Verisign si Thawte), si astfel nu se mai pot instala via broser aplicatii semnate cum ar fi Yahoo Go!, Opera Mini si Google Maps, fiind intampinati de mesajul “Invalid certificat/Certificat invalid” sau “Certificat not on phone or SIM/Fara certificat pe telefon sau SIM”. De asemenea exista un bug foarte stresant. Acolo unde vrei sa pui o scurtatura la o aplicatie Java, in barele de comenzi rapide sau in meniul “Mergi la”, accesarea si alegerea aplicatiilor este imposibila deoarece de cate ori se incearca acest procedeu telefonul se restarteaza.

Pana acum astea au fost problemele gasite de mine prin utilizarea intensa a terminalului si va sfatuiesc sa ramaneti la orice versiune aveti in prezent deoarece orice update va va trimite fortat la versiunea fatidica 7.20. Cei care aveti versiunea 3.xx sau 5.xx nu plangeti ca mari diferente nu sunt. Cei care aveti versiunea 7.00 trageti de ea si cu dintii caci e cea mai buna momentan. Voi reveni cu informatii cand va aparea o versiune noua.

Essa dica serve para aqueleque como eu deletaram sem querer o widget da Área de Notificação no KDE 4.x e depois ficou sem saber como recuperar..rs…..

Este widget fica normalmente ao lado do relógio e nele sinaliza a conexão de rede, ícone do kmix, updater applet, para facilitar ela trabalhar similar ao sytem tray do window$. Para adicionar a área de notificação é muito simples, bastando clicar com o botão direito do mouse sobre a barra de tarefas, selecione Desbloquear widget (caso esteja bloquaeda a barra para que você possa adicionar novas funções), depois volte a clicar e selecione Opções do Painel e depois Adicionar Widget. Na janela que abrir selecione Área de Notificação de em seguida clique no botão abaixo Selecionar Widet.  Pronto agora sua Área de notificação foi reestabelecida.

Come da titolo è ora possibile aggiornare il firmware di Nokia 5800 XpressMusic alla versione 21.0.025 anche tramite NSU (Nokia Software Updater). Da circa una settimana a questa parte era possibile aggiornare il dispositivo con la versione del firmware in questione, solamente con la modalità OTA (Over The Air). Ma gli aggiornamenti non riguardano solamente il firmware del dispositivo. Infatti anche NSU, il programma che appunto che ci permette di aggiornare il dispositivo collegandolo al PC (ricordo invece che via OTA la procedura di aggiornamento viene eseguita direttamente ed interamente dal telefono, senza il bisogno di passare per il PC), si aggiorna alla versione 1.6.11, per cui non si conosce un ufficiale changelog, ma in effetti dovrebbe essere stata migliorata la stabilità del programma sul sistema operativo Windows Vista.

Il rilascio dei due aggiornamenti sembra anche correlata, infatti alcuni utenti (grazie a eska), segnalano che il nuovo aggiornamento si rivela disponibile solo con la nuove versione di NSU.

Ricordo infine che nelle ultime versioni di NSU, un nuovo layout dovrebbe fornire (non ho ancora testato direttamente) un mini changelog per informare gli utenti sui principali vantaggi che comporta l’aggiornamento.

Si può effettuare il download della nuova versione di NSU dal sito ufficiale di Nokia Italia (il 5800 non figura tra i modelli compatibili, fate direttamente su download), oppure aggiornando direttamente dal programma, qualora fossero già presenti precedenti versioni sul vostro PC.

Come da buon cris, nei commenti di questo blog, disponibile anche per i nostri Nokia 5800 XpressMusic il nuovo aggiornamento firmware alla versione 21.0.025.

Fonte P@sco, dal blog di Serie-N, il nuovo firmware sembra disponibile al momento solo tramite aggiornamento OTA, ma presto lo sarà anche via NSU. Lo stesso P@sco ci rilascia intanto il changelog completo, con ben 225 fixes e “il miglioramento fotografico ed un incremento notevole della velocità”, tra le novità più importanti.

Before I did too deeply into any review of the 5800XM I received several weeks ago now, I think it’s necessary for anyone who has the means to update their device to the next firmware, whether it’s officially available or not. The update changes enough things that I feel it’s worth it to take the risk, and if you happen to be running an APAC firmware, the update allows you to switch product codes to get a much nicer looking set of fonts.

Some things to keep in mind before continuing…

• As with most firmware updates, flashing will erase all of your information. Be sure to backup anything important.
• Using this method to flash could potentially damage your device. I assume no liability should you damage or brick your phone.
• Changing your product code will void your devices manufacturer warranty. It is always possible to use this same method to revert back to the original product code, though again, I assume no liability if your warranty is void from this update process.

If the desire for a stable firmware and nicer looking fonts is more important than these things for you, click through for the walkthrough.

Please read this entire guide before attempting the flash.

The entire process should take you anywhere between a half hour to an hour and a half, depending on the requirement of your computer.

Note: You NEED to have a machine running Windows XP. It will NOT work in anything except Windows XP. I have not tested this process on a virtual machine.

Preparation

• Backup everything you’d like to keep in the manner which you see fit and remove your microSD card.
• Charge your device! I can’t tell you how many flashes go bad because people trust that 3 bars of battery is enough.
• Set the phone’s profile to General/Normal
• Download the flashing software, Phoenix Service Software 2008 (patched and ready to go)
• Download the firmware itself, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic RM-356 EMEA 11.0.008 v2.0
• Uninstall ALL Nokia software, including any version of PC Suite, MapLoader, Nokia Software Updater, and all drivers associated with those applications. Reboot when finished.
  *If you have the tools necessary and don’t want to mess with cleaning out old Nokia drivers, it is much easier to load Phoenix onto a brand new XP installation, either through partition or on your main hard drive, and flash from there. Unless you want to the installation of XP, you don’t need to install any other device drivers to flash your 5800XM.

Installation

• Install Phoenix 2008. Simply double click on the installer and follow the directions.
• After Phoenix has installed, UNCHECK the box that says “Launch Phoenix”. The next portion of the installation can not work properly with Phoenix running in the background. (Thanks to Klueless from HoFo for the tip)

Note: During the final phase of installation, there will be a patching process. It may be necessary to manually locate the directories of the file the patch is searching for (typically C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix). If more than one of those files is unable to be found during the patching process, this entire process is MUCH less likely to work.

• Install the v11 firmware. This installation is completely automatic.

Flashing Procedure

Please refer to THIS guide from the Daily Mobile Forum for a step-by-step walkthrough of the actual flashing process. I will use it for reference in this guide. (Credit goes to ElevenX for putting it together with screenshots)

• Connect your charged 5800XM with the microUSB cable and choose PC Suite mode. Wait for the drivers to install.
• Open Phoenix 2008.
• Click File>Manage Connections (Image 1)
• Press New and click the checkmark next to USB. Click Next. (Image 2)
• The window should scan for the connection type and find a USB device. Click Next. (Image 3)
• Make sure the USB connection is at the top of the list, highlight it, click Apply and Close.

• Click File>Scan Product. The statusbar at the bottom should display “RM-356″. If not, there is a problem with the connection and you will need to start this process over, making sure to remove all Nokia drivers.
• Click Flashing>Firmware Update. A new window should appear. (Image 4)
• Click the dots next to Product Code. Another new window should appear with the available product codes for your 5800XM (including color variations).
• You can choose whichever you’d like, though I chose EURO 1 Blue/Red to keep it generic. You can choose whichever you’d like for different language packs (all of them have English). Click OK. (Image 5)
  Note: the guide from Mobile Forum indicates the Dead Phone USB Flashing box should be checked. Do NOT check this box when flashing your phone unless you really have a dead phone, otherwise you will indeed make it a dead phone!
• Click Refurbish at the bottom of the window. The flashing process takes about 2-3 minutes at most.

That’s it! Your phone should start on its own with the new firmware and much better looking fonts.

This guide will probably be relevant until NSU is updated to include all regions for the 5800XM. Please leave a comment or send me an email with any questions you might have.

Now that I’m running this firmware, I feel like it’s a completely different device. I had started a review with a lot of disappointments about the 5800XM, but this firmware is making me change a lot of my original thoughts. I should be able to post it within the week (I hope!
