As you may already know, next Ubuntu release, Lucid Lynx (10.04) is an LTS release.

For testers this means one important thing: upgrades should be smooth from either Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) or latest Ubuntu LTS release (8.04, Hardy Heron).

As we all know, nowadays, computer storage is very very cheap, but bandwidth is not. Later in the cycle we are going to need to test as many upgrades from Hardy and Karmic as possible. So, why not planning ahead and start downloading today Hardy and Karmic images? The unstoppable Shane Fagan has started doing so already! You rock!

Later in the cycle you will be able to easily install Hardy or Karmic in a spare machine or a virtual machine and upgrade from there. You will have part of the work done. And you can start contributing to your beloved distribution just now

I have been reading online about the new Blackberry Bold 9700. I’ll admit. I don’t need

I have been reading online about the new Blackberry Bold 9700.

I’ll admit. I don’t need the phone right now. It’s a want. It’s new. It’s shiny, I’m a gadget geek.

So I thought I would see what an upgrade (early) would entail.

One thing I have learned is that you talk to one AT&T store you hear one thing, another store will tell you the opposite.

I went online and viewed the phone specs and then went to AT&T’s website. That confused me. I would find pages that told me I’d get the current promotional pricing and then it would quote me the full price.

Wednesday since I only worked a half day and the office was pretty much dead, I decided to call a store and see what I could find out.

I called the AT&T store on Military Hwy in Norfolk near Military Circle mall. The guy that answered the phone seemed to not want to answer my questions since I wasn’t a new line of service. Told me that because I wasn’t in the store he could not pull up the account information for my early upgrade date. However he said that since I was looking to upgrade before my April early upgrade date I could probably get $75 off the $299 price.

Since I sensed he really didn’t want to help me I figured I’d drive to the store that I purchased the iPhone from Wednesday evening and see what I could find.

I was VERY dissappinted. The salesman was a wet behind the ears jerk. I used to be in the cellular business. The technology is more digital now but the basics did not change. Helping people is how you build your base, not concentrating on a new line of service!

He said you have to stay in your contract for two years first. So I asked him why AT&T said I could upgrade in April then. He said oh, you know that date. Nothing I can do.

I said come on. I’ve paid for the iPhone 3x’s so far since I got it. That I was very upset that no insurance could be purchased by the phone. Also expressed my displeasure that I hear AT&T has a third party company providing insurance but I can’t get it because the phone is older than 60 days.

Then he started to go into a lecture that they could not give me early pricing because of the FCC. Told him I guess I could cancel this line and go to T-Mobile then since they have the same phone.

He then told me to contact customer service. He said that they sometimes would approve a purchase of the phone for $299 and a two year contract. If they did to just have them note my account.

I went outside and contacted customer service. Explained what I have been trying to do and what the little boy salesman told me.

The service rep said that’s strange. I can. Or tour account all ibwant but it’s up to that store manager to approve. I had it with that store. The service rep told me she could pull up a core store nearby that could help I lost confidence in her when she asked me what the abbrevation was for Virginia.

I decided to drive to the AT&T store at Hilltop and see what I could find there. Their signage said they were open to 8. However, when I got there ten minutes to 8 they had already closed.

So far I have found that these sales reps are only interested in helping you if you are starting a new line of service. Very poor customer service and uninformed sales people that told me twenty different things.

I’m weighing my options. I’ve paid my bill on time every month. Never had a need to deal with anyone in awhile.

I’ve been in sales and sales managment. What I’ve experienced was crap. I’d get rid of some of these people if I was in management and saw how they handle customers.

Lol, I don’t know, I thought they would of been upgraded the servers for Left 4 Dead 2 a while back. Anyway, I doubt the servers would be lag free though, they’ll have less lag but you can’t get rid of all the lag but whatever. At least they’re making progress. No telling when I’ll play the game if I even want to play it now.

The second-generation Kindle is getting a boost in battery life as well as new native PDF capabiliti

The second-generation Kindle is getting a boost in battery life as well as new native PDF capabilities. Amazon indicated today that the Kindle’s battery life during wireless use will be extended by 85 percent by way of an improved battery management improvement program that is part of Kindle software update version 2.3. The firmware upgrade will also allow users to read and resize unconverted PDFs.

Enhanced PDF capabilities will catch the Kindle up with existing competitors such as the Sony Reader which currently handle unconverted PDFs, and add to Kindle’s guard against upcoming readers such as the QUE which will be marketed as “business oriented” due to its document-oriented capabilities. Longer battery power will help the Kindle against upcoming devices such as the Alex reader that will be powered by the battery-efficient ARMADA 166E.

The upgrade will automatically be delivered to Kindle customers via the device’s wireless connection, and the automatic installation will not require users’ consent. While the wireless meddling by Amazon in this case seems to be for the greater good of Kindle users, it nonetheless evokes unpleasant memories of this summer’s 1984/Animal Farm fiasco.

Upgraded to Windows 7 a few weeks ago. I wanted to wake bit before writing about to make sure that I

Upgraded to Windows 7 a few weeks ago. I wanted to wake bit before writing about to make sure that I’d had a chance to use it for a while and see how it worked.

Now, I’m no techie.. I’m a user. My interaction with the software is based on being a power user if you will, I use a lot of social networking stuff.. obviously. I use Microsoft Office extensively, lots of Visio, Excel and Access. I’m a reputed “power user” in these applications. Sort of the office resource for support and for producing reports, building databases, that sort of stuff. Other than that, the odd entertainment package, music applications, photo stuff, lots of photo stuff, and that about wraps up what I do.

I’m also a Mac and PC user. My wife and kids have Macs, and given the choice would use the Mac. Personally since I actually work with my computer, and the Mac has neither Visio OR Access, it’s not all that helpful. I’m also a big fan of the Windows Live stuff, not which works on a Mac. I’m not big fan of Apples closed proprietary architecture, which BTW is why Mac will never be business platform, but then again I don’t think they care.

All that aside, I was not one of those who was offended by Vista. Matter of fact, once I got used to the interfaces on the office suite I sort of liked it. I didn’t experience instability with Vista, I wasn’t doing anything that really stretched to operating system, I really didn’t have any complaints.

Why upgrade? I’m a sucker for new technology, early adopter if you will. I made it to a Windows 7 house party, saw some cool things, liked the interface a lot, but to be honest things like shaking windows and running two windows at once side by side.. not something that I’m too excited about, my learning curve on stuff like is reallllly long,

I dove into the 7 pool two weeks ago Friday. Inserted the 7 Ultimate DVD into the PC and followed instructions. After answering the right questions and inputting the correct serial numbers the process started. Since I was upgrading Vista a complete harddrive reformat was not required; desirable, but not required. I had backed up my media and personal data just incase, but I did it in a way that was neither efficient or easy to get back, more later.

After watching the thing clock away and warn me not to turn off the PC for over an hour I went to bed. The next morning I was a bit distressed to see that the PC was still clocking. It had completed file loads and rebooting processes, but the final completion was hanging it up. I waited a couple hours and when nothing had happened, against advice I turned off the PC and rebooted from the disc drive with a complete reformat. Thanks goodness I’d saved.

The second install went better than the first and actually completed. I logged on, created my account and started installing my office suite. Unfortunately I had no keyboard, no mouse, no sound and no HP Hot Buttons.. None of the HP drivers were installed. This made the computer a bit of brick to be honest. I hooked up an old external keyboard and for some reason that worked. I made it out the HP website and found the 7 drivers, installed them and was back in business.

Sound card was fixed with Microsofts “FixIt” which to my pleasant surprise actually did fix it. I had sound.. Bad news is, my sound doesn’t last..

iTunes took a couple tries to get installed, and once installed imported my library incorrectly, giving me 4 files for every song I owned, which in my case is a lot of songs. The idea of manually removing them.. not realistic. That problem was corrected with a bit of freeware http://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/content/index.php, an easy to use duplicate file remover that can go after media files only if desired. Thank goodness it worked.. hand selecting 12,000 files would have taken a while.

My photo back up regimen did NOT include my nested folders for some reason,, user error and that mistake cost me all of my summer of 2009 at the lake pics. My fault, but incredibly annoying none the less.

Other that Mrs Lincoln, the play was fine.

Now that I’ve been using the software, I’d give it a pretty glowing review. It’s certainly easy to understand. The snip it feature alone is cool, like that. Windows Media Player is better than iTunes.. but alas doesn’t sync with an iPod.. so the great functionality is of limited usefulness, since I’m not going open it very often.

The machine certainly boots and shuts down much faster than it did on Vista.. thanks goodness. My only continuing complaint is the sound driver still doesn’t work correctly. About once a day I lose sound and have to reboot to get it back.

My virus software, Kaspersky doesn’t seem to like Win 7. Added to the trouble Kaspersky the company doesn’t seem to like me. They have no record of the 3 year deal I bought to keep my software current and since I lost the emails with the codes.. I’m screwed. BUT, I’m using Microsoft’s new Security Essentials, free software that’s getting pretty good reviews. So far I’ve been very happy with it. It’s certainly not the resource hog that Norton or McAffee was.

I’ve had zero compatibility issues with Windows 7. Everything I run or have run in the past seems to work great.. no problems there. So all in all, I think Microsoft has a winner on the operating system.. now they need to get more from their mail and browsers to really get the home market nailed.

Hi,

Also die bekannten Tricks angewendet. Dienst Windows Update stoppen (net stop wuausvc) den Ordner “SystemRoot%\Software Distribution” löschen und Windows Vista neustarten. Kein Erfolg.

800703e6 Invalid access to memory location & Windows Vista SP 2 (KB948465) keeps failing – get code WindowsUpdate_8007049

Neuinstallation, aber was?

- Windows 7 does run faster then Windows Vista and faster then XP on some computers.

- Windows XP can not be upgraded to Windows 7 without a complete reinstall.

- There will be a limited time Family Pack upgrade for $150 for 3 computers.

[Updated 25 November to include a link to the release notes. -Peng]

I’ve noticed for some time that when I open the Epiphany browser the GlobalMenu identifies it as “Epiphany Web Bookmarks”. Since the web browser and the bookmark manager are two different apps I wanted to file a bug against it. There’s just one problem. When you go to the page to report a new issue with the GlobalMenu the first thing you see is

IMPORTANT: Before reporting an issue:

1. Make sure the issue has not been fixed in the
latest version:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome2-globalmenu/issues/list?q=label:Milestone-
Release0.7.8

What’s the problem? The GlobalMenu PPA, which supports jaunty, intrepid and hardy but not karmic, and it only has version 0.7.5. You could build version 0.7.8 from source, but when I tried to build it I immediately went into dependency hell. Luckily I discovered Issue 524: PPA for Karmic on the GlobalMenu section of Google Code. Abhishek Dasgupta has managed to build packages for version 0.7.8 on his PPA, although only for karmic.

If you’re running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala getting the updated GlobalMenu is easy. Open a terminal and run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:abhidg/ppa

That will not only add Abhishek’s PPA to your sources.list but also get the GPG signing key for it. Let’s update your available package information with

sudo apt-get update

If you already have GlobalMenu installed you should see the Update Manager icon in your notification to let you know that there’s an update available. Just click that icon and follow the normal steps for applying updates.

If you don’t have GlobalMenu installed yet and want to get it add the repo with the above command and update your package info. Once the
apt-get update
is completed run this command:

sudo apt-get install gnome-globalmenu

Then add the GlobalMenu panel applet to your panel and enjoy having menus for your application windows in one place and not on each window. Just remember, Firefox and OpenOffice.org, as well as any apps that need administrator privileges (like Synaptic), won’t use GlobalMenu.

If you want to follow the bug I was filing that prompted this post it’s Issue 548: Wrong app title shown for Epiphany/Webkit in Ubuntu Karmic.

Updated 25 November: If you aren’t sure if you really want to get the upgrade yo can read the release notes, although they haven’t completly updated the docs for version 0.7.8 yet. There are some really nice updates in version 0.7.8 from 0.7.5 so I heartily recommend getting the upgrade.

Lately we have been asked several questions on why a client should upgrade to the latest version of QuickBooks. This isn’t always the easiest question to answer. It is no secret that from year to year there are not dramatic, earth shattering changes made to the product. However, over time changes are made and improvements can be seen in the product.

This year with the release of QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 2010, I would have to say that a big reason some businesses may want to upgrade is for the increased number of custom fields that have been made available; as well as being able to identify certain formats for each field. In the past this wasn’t possible, and the chance of data input errors was high. Now you can predefine the data that can be used in each field, which improves the accuracy of your data and reports. Again, this is not a feature for everyone, but for those that need to store more information than the defaults QuickBooks provides this is a nice improvement.

Please note this is only one of the improvements made to the latest version. Please feel free to contact us for more details on QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 2010. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have, and would love to assist you in upgrading if the time is right for you!

Well, I did it. I took the bit in my teeth and installed Apple’s latest version of its operating sys

Well, I did it. I took the bit in my teeth and installed Apple’s latest version of its operating system, Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), this last week. I wish to report that I was pleasantly surprised with how well it went. You see, having used Microsoft Windows for nearly 25 years, I knew better than to install a new version of that operation system (OS) on an older machine. If I was buying a new machine, sure, the latest OS was worth it because I would be installing the applications etc. from scratch. However, to install an updated version (major revision) on an older machine on top of already installed applications was just asking for trouble for which new versions of Windows were notorious.

So, it was with some trepidation that I approached installing Snow Leopard on my 1 1/2 year-old iMac. I read all the reviews and understood that Apple was not Microsoft; that because they had better control over their computers, they could better handle an OS upgrade. Thus, with some time available to handle any problems that might pop up, I gritted my teeth and purchased an upgrade copy of Snow Leopard.

The sales guy at the Apple store confirmed the install should be relatively painless but did caution me to backup all my data etc. just in case. After all, stuff does happen, like power failures during the install, and occasionally a bug in a specific configuration does appear. I backed up my data to both my external hard drive and a DVD, and then popped the Snow Leopard DVD into the machine and let Apple take over.

Installing an OS upgrade is not like installing the latest version of a favorite application program. It takes time as configurations must be copied, stored and reestablished, and documents and files swapped back and forth. As long as my computer screen didn’t go blank, blue or otherwise indicate a serious problem, I let it proceed for the 20 or 30 minutes it took to make the change. After the perfunctory reboot, my familiar desktop came back up on the screen with little noticeable change.

The first thing my new system wanted to do was check for updates via the Internet. That revealed the first problem: my system couldn’t find my Telus 3G card which serves as my “high-speed” Internet connection (we don’t have regular high speed here in the country, despite the “Alberta Advantage”). Upon checking my System Preferences, I found I had a new Internet connection using the Telus card through a Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN). Once I activated it in Preferences, I found a new icon on the menu bar at the top of my screen. Connecting to the Internet was now just a click away. So off I went to the Apple site to download the latest update for Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.2). That’s a 500+ Mb download that took the better part of five hours.

Next to check was the connections with my peripherals. My HP photo-quality ink jet printer passed with flying colors. However, my HP laser jet printer did not. Although, the system recognized the printer, the printer would not accept print jobs. What to do?

After double checking all physical and software connections and double checking with the HP web site about a revised print driver (where I was informed it was included with Snow Leopard), I phoned Apple technical support. Now, over the years I’ve also learned not to expect much satisfaction from telephone technical support. Of course, Microsoft was the worst for this because if you had the temerity to obtain your Windows already installed on your PC, Microsoft washed its hands of any support and referred you to the computer manufacturer. In my case, that meant talking to somebody in a heavily accented English who quickly dismissed my problem as a Microsoft one (I so love “Catch-22”).

However with Apple, I found myself talking to someone who actually attempted to understand my problem and seek a solution. She confirmed what actions I had already taken and then stepped me through some others. Unfortunately, she could not figure out why the printer would not print. She then put me on hold while she sought her supervisor. He quickly came on line, apologized for my problem, and reviewed the steps that had already been taken. Soon, he was stepping me into the inner workings of the OS where we deleted some files. I rebooted the machine and voila, my printer worked. Apparently, and old configuration had to be deleted before the system built a new one. Thank you Apple for providing the support I needed. You are an example of what customer service should be about!

Next I tried my Nikon slide and film scanner. No problem, it worked like a charm like it always has. Next, came my HP flatbed photo scanner. Problem! Snow Leopard didn’t know it existed. Before calling Apple again I decided to do some research. Using Google I soon found myself at the Apple and HP support forums where I learned HP had stopped supplying upgraded print drivers for this particular scanner for several years, and Apple confirmed this scanner was not supported. As a result, I joined the throng of dissatisfied HP customers on these forums pledging not to buy another HP scanner.

Fortunately, I still have a Windows laptop (XP) that will drive the scanner. Since I bought my Nikon scanner, I have little use for the flatbed other than photocopying. However, I do need one for other purposes from time to time. So, I will let the laptop fill the gap until I find a suitable replacement.

Thus, if you use a Mac, I recommend upgrading to Snow Leopard. It has a smaller footprint and several other enhancements that improves your experience. However, as with any OS upgrade, be prepared to take some time to fine tune; and don’t fear approaching Apple Support. They will indeed help you!

So, what’s wrong with that?

The Seven Key Questions to Ask Yourself: 1. Determine how much money you have to invest in your syst

The Seven Key Questions to Ask Yourself:

1. Determine how much money you have to invest in your system.

2. Decide whether you are seeking “audiophile quality”

or the modern equivalent of the AM radio.

3. Are you an “audio enthusiast” who wants all the bells and whistles, or is FM Stereo the highest in sonic fidelity for you?

4. What types of music do you usually listen to? Are you strictly jazz or do you love thrash-metal? Somewhere in between?

5. How long do you think you’ll own your car or the equipment you purchase tomorrow?

6. Lastly, what special things do you have to watch out for with your car stereo? Does it have odd-shaped openings for speakers or the “head-unit?”

7. Is your car or truck designed to accommodate after-market systems?

Once you’ve answered these questions, you’ll be on your way to making an informed buying decision.

Audio equipment comes in a wide range of prices, quality, and performance, from the least expensive mass-produced CD players, tuner/amplifiers and all-in-one systems with navigation and even TV screens, to precision-crafted “reference” components costing several hundred dollars. The key is to obtain the best possible sound quality at the most reasonable price.

After considering the points above it boils down to the following when upgrading your sound system. The first is getting the music into the car – via radio, tape, CD, MP3 player or mini-disc unit, etc. The second is getting the music out of the car – via speakers, amplifiers (amps), subwoofers and so on. You can upgrade either of these areas alone, to some extent, but best results will be obtained by planning a co-ordinated approach.

Once it is installed in you vehicle you will have to bear in mind the following. Your expensive sound system may not be immediately apparent to thieves, as speakers, amps and subwoofers are often hidden from casual view, but one thing that will give the game away is your fancy head unit. One look at it will say “I’ve got a really nice sound system installed in here!” For this reason, many head units are detachable, even on moderately priced systems. Push a button and the whole front fascia pops off to be safely hidden out of sight or taken with you (in a special case) when you leave the car.

As a little treat to myself and blog anniversary gift (this site turned one year old a few days ago.

As a little treat to myself and blog anniversary gift (this site turned one year old a few days ago. I’ll have a birthday post in a bit) I upgraded my flickr.com account. With the free version of Flickr you get 200 hundred uploads to host images/videos on their site. Even though I use that them to host the images I post on my blog reaching my free limit was something I never thought would happen. But to my surprise I had peeked my quota in no time.

Broke down, bit the bullet and shelled out the $24.99 yearly fee for unlimited uploadeds. Not that what breaks down to a two dollar a month charge is going to send my bank account into a death spiral but it was something I was avoiding. Whenever I start out with something that I can do for free I find myself kicking and screaming against paying for it.

After I made peace with having to pry my seldom used credit card out my tightly closed wallet I really got into my improved Flick PRO account. The PRO gives me the ability to track stats on views my images get not to mention how much more fancier my account looks with “PRO” displayed for all to see. The “PRO” signals “this guy means business”, “Look out word he’s a professional” and “this guy had a extra 25 bucks to spend on something other than internet porn site”

Here’s the link to my photo stream. http://www.flickr.com/photos/huskyanimator/

Gaze into the glorious “PRO” next to my name. AMEN
