<td><span style="font-size:xx-small;">National Association of Realtors reported today December 22nd, 2009 that <a href="http://www.realtor.org/press_room/news_releases/2009/12/another_respond">existing home sales</a> in November rose 7.4 percent to 6.54 million units, up from 6.09 million units in October 2009. This numbers for November is 44 percent higher than the 4.54 million units sold in November 2008. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">Greater Greenville SC real estate market also saw an increase in sale. In November 2009, there were 581 total residential single family homes, including Condos and Townhouses, that sold in the Greater Greenville real estate market. This number is 40.3 percent higher than the 414 units that were sold in November 2008, and 10.2 percent higher than the 12 month average of 527 units.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">This increase is mostly credited to first time home buyers who hurried to take advantage of the first time home buyer tax credit which originally had a deadline of November 30th.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">Average sales price in Greater Greenville for November 2009 was $157,491, Median sales price was $132,900, and total sales volume was $91,502,537. The average Days on Market(DOM) in Greater Greenville for the month of November was 100 days.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">Year to date, from January 1st to November 30th 2009, there were 6251 units sold. Average sales price was $166,112, Median sales price was $139,900, total volume was $1,038,365,561, and the average DOM was 101 days.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">As of December 10th 2009, there were 6,465 residential single family, condo/townhouses available for sale in the Greater Greenville real estate market. This is 192 units less inventory than the 6,657 available units as of November 10th 2009. Average list price was $259,492, Median list price was $184,628, total volume was $1,677,615,331, and average DOM for the active listings was 158 days.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">The increase in Greenville SC home sales, coupled with the decrease in current inventory is an indication that the home buyer tax credit is doing its job to stimulate the housing market. Of course we still have a long way to go, especially with the amount home owners who are still in default, but it seems like our worst days are behind us.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">Remember: The $8,000 first-time </span><a href="http://www.greenvillerealestatehub.com/home-buyer-tax-credit-extended-and-expanded"><span style="font-size:xx-small;">Home Buyer Tax Credit</span></a><span style="font-size:xx-small;"> has been extended to April 30th, and has also been expanded to include a $6,500 tax credit for repeat buyers who have occupied their home for at least five years. </span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>As if Lone Star Funds had not already wrecked one company <a title="Business Journal" href="http://birmingham.bizjournals.com/birmingham/stories/2009/12/21/story1.html" target="_blank">[see here], </a>when it allowed Bruno’s Supermarket chain to file for bankruptcy, one would have thought Lone Star would not force Bi-Lo into bankruptcy as well.</p>
<p>All this was done while robbing Peter to pay Paul.</p>
<p>That’s exactly what yet another lawsuit filed against Lone Star states. The lawsuit claims that officials at Lone Star acted with “negligence and recklessness in Bruno’s loss of more than $290 million.”</p>
<p>It becomes clearer every day that Lone Star is attempting to pull the same trick. If Lone Star is allowed to reorganize Bi-Lo and sell it off to other competitors like Food Lion, then they will have done the same thing to Bi-Lo that they did with Bruno’s.</p>
<p>As the old saying goes, “fool me twice shame on me.” Take action now to make sure what happened to Bruno’s does not happen to Bi-Lo. <a href="http://www.savebi-lo.com">www.savebi-lo.com</a></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>The streets were swept with crusty leaves and balled up run-off from indiscriminate trashcans. He came too early and rested his guitar next to him at the bar. He drank pint glasses of wheat beer and left the oranges beached on cocktails napkins.</p>
<p>He was the type of man with a backbone that didn’t fold when he wept. The fine mop of hair laid sweaty against his neck, framed by the sharp hint of collarbone. The lines in his knuckles were deep gradations, aging his hand likes the rings in a split tree trunk. Across the room, his fishbowl eyes burned neon blue.</p>
<p>I looked back. He didn’t move much. I could see his spine stacked up beneath his undershirt. His shoulders were sharp, like someone had cut his wings off with a rough blade.</p>
<p>I felt his eyes on me that evening as he sat at the bar slowly drinking beer, carefully removing each orange slice from the rim of his glass and collecting them in a pile on the side. I wondered how drunk he was, or if he was drunk at all.  I wished I had counted the orange slices.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Lindsay Graham Sucks]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I was trying to come up with a way to start this post off, when I looked at the folder that held my research papers and I had written “Lindsay Graham sucks” on it. That is just about the most straightforward lead-in that I can come up with. So now, let me walk you through some of the problems with Lindsay Graham.</p>
<p>In 2007, while working with Joe Lieberman and Ted Kennedy on a bill to grant amnesty to illegal aliens, Graham spoke at a meeting of La Raza (the Race). A Hispanic group who wants to reclaim the Southwestern part of the United States for Mexico. Graham made the statement that “No group owns being an American.” When asked how he would address those opposed to amnesty his reply was “We are going to tell the bigots to shut up.” From the senate floor, he referred to opponents of the bill as loud mouths.</p>
<p>My thoughts on this are both simple and straightforward; I view speaking at a group that supports using force to overthrow parts America as pandering to the enemy. It is not acceptable, nor should it be to speak to the KKK, Skinheads, Neo-Nazi’s or any other hate group. Just because this group is acceptable to your liberal friends, does not make it acceptable to people who have principles. In addition, Lindsay, a group does own “being an American.” It is not limited by race, religion or ethnicity. It is made up of the millions of people who love this country, people who are proud to live here and strive to keep it strong and prosperous. This group owns that title and regardless of how you try to hurt these people, nothing that you can say can ever take that title away. It is strange that this is the same group that you are calling bigots and loud mouths. All I can say is that playing the race card will out a true liberal before anything. This is standard for the liberal left. It is sad that an elected official would use these terms when referring to people who simply believe in the rule of law and our countries sovereign borders.</p>
<p>I have said many times that if a bill is constitutional, if there is an actual need for it and it will not add to the deficit that I would be glad to work with any democrat to help get it passed. Lindsay Graham on the other hand seems to pick the worst bills to join the democrats on. Voting in favor of the bank bailouts hurt his standing among republicans. Now he is working with liberal Senator John Kerry on the Cap and Trade bill and co-writing op-ed pieces with him and this seems to be the straw that has broke the camels back.</p>
<p>In November, the Charleston County Republican Party Executive Committee voted to censure Senator Graham for statements and actions detrimental to the Republican Party. The Berkley County GOP followed but agreed to hold their vote until January, so that Grahams Chief of Staff could come and talk to the committee. Censure is a procedure that I would like to see repeated by each county GOP committee in the state and by the State GOP Committee next year.</p>
<p>One of the unfortunate results of having a Lindsay Graham is the people that he drags down with him. When people try to defend the indefensible, I feel that they are actually stooping lower than the person who committed the act. Here are some examples and how I feel about them.</p>
<p>At the Berkley County GOP meeting State Sen. Paul Campbell, R-Goose Creek, said he disagrees with Graham on the energy bill but urged the committee to give him a chance to speak for himself.<br />
&#8220;I just think it sends the wrong message to censure him when we&#8217;re trying to work with him on a grant to get 600 jobs,&#8221; Campbell said. &#8220;To act tonight is premature without giving him a chance to speak.&#8221;</p>
<p>Excuse me senator but I believe that after an op-ed piece penned by Graham and numerous interviews that he has spoken for himself. He is clear on where he stands and unfortunately so are you. By your statement, you seem to feel that we should treat Graham as if he can do no wrong as long as we can get something from him. Senator, that kind of thinking is what is wrong with this country today. You are the problem and should be voted out at the first opportunity.</p>
<p>Next comes former South Carolina State GOP Chairman Katon Dawson. While his “its just Lindsay being Lindsay” statement shows luke warm support, he followed that up by saying “People need to look at the big picture. At the end of the day, what we are looking for is offshore drilling for natural gas and Lindsey got that in the bill.”</p>
<p>Mr. Dawson knows that drilling is the least of the problems with Cap and Trade. This is throwing a red herring out so that people will think that Graham had accomplished a great feat, when in fact it gave us nothing. Like I said, Katon knows the damage that Cap and Trade would cause but he is still willing to provide cover for Graham. At this time Mr. Dawson holds no position in the GOP and we should be sure to keep it this way.</p>
<p>Now we come to our new faux hero, Joe Wilson. Wilson was an obscure Congressman from South Carolina until the State of the Union Address when Wilson decided to shout, “You lie” to the president. Many people applaud Wilson for this but I believe that he is more of an embarrassment to South Carolina than Mark Sanford could ever be. I have no problem with him calling the president a liar but I am tired of our elected weasels acting like children for their own political advantage. His lack of decorum is inexcusable. It is not surprising that he would come to Graham’s defense. Wilson released a statement saying, “Lindsey Graham has been a great leader for our state and party. I appreciate everything he has done for me and his tireless work in helping Republicans at all levels of government. He’s a team player. Ronald Reagan always said that people who agree with you 80 percent of the time should be considered a good friend…”</p>
<p>What happens congressman when the 20% that you disagree on is over your core values? What if it is over policy that will hurt the people of this country? Are they still your friend to where you help them get their bills passed? Perhaps you have no core values or care about the people. Perhaps all you care about congressman is you. If Cap and trade is so great let us hear you come out in support of it. You will not do that because you know that you will lose all of your newfound money. When your own wife refers to you as a nut that should tell you something. Joe Wilson needs to go in 2010.</p>
<p>In one of the articles on Wilson’s statement, the blogger and Graham supporter Adam Fogle added this, “Graham has come under fire by some Republicans for working with Democrats to include in a climate change bill measures that would expand offshore drilling as well as nuclear energy, clean coal and natural gas — something the GOP has ironically wanted for years.<br />
Wilson’s reference to Reagan, a conservative icon, couldn’t be more appropriate.<br />
On a previous post on The Palmetto Scoop, one commenter left a particularly poignant passage from the former president that knee-jerk Republicans would be wise to heed.<br />
“When I began entering into the give and take of legislative bargaining in Sacramento, a lot of the most radical conservatives who had supported me during the election didn’t like it,” Reagan wrote in his autobiography, An American Life. “‘Compromise’ was a dirty word to them and they wouldn’t face the fact that we couldn’t get all of what we wanted today. They wanted all or nothing and they wanted it all at once. If you don’t get it all, some said, don’t take anything.”<br />
Added Reagan, “If you got 75 or 80 percent of what you were asking for, I say, you take it and fight for the rest later, and that’s what I told these radical conservatives who never got used to it.”</p>
<p>Once again I have to agree with the premise of accepting 75 or 80 percent, but once again I have to point out that in Grahams case he is only getting about .1% and giving away 99.9%. This is not called compromise; this is called giving away the store. This is not acceptable.</p>
<p>Now it is time to get to the point of this article. The time has come not only to censure Senator Graham but also to ask for his resignation. While I understand that this is only symbolic in nature, that it holds no weight of law and that the senator probably really does not care what the people say, the reason that he joined on the Cap and Trade is the worst insult of all. Here are three statements describing the problem;</p>
<p>“We also need legislation to provide regulatory certainty to our state’s business community. If Congress does not act, unelected bureaucrats at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will issue regulations controlling carbon emissions. In the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2007 decision Massachusetts v. EPA, the Court ruled carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases should be regulated as pollutants under the Clean Air Act.<br />
EPA regulation of carbon is the worst possible scenario. The EPA will destroy jobs and contain no new provisions for expanded nuclear energy or offshore drilling.<br />
Regardless of whether you view climate change as a real threat or some grand hoax, carbon will eventually be regulated – either through congressional action or by the EPA.”</p>
<p>“Failure to act comes with another cost. If Congress does not pass legislation dealing with climate change, the administration will use the Environmental Protection Agency to impose new regulations. Imposed regulations are likely to be tougher and they certainly will not include the job protections and investment incentives we are proposing.<br />
The message to those who have stalled for years is clear: killing a Senate bill is not success; indeed, given the threat of agency regulation, those who have been content to make the legislative process grind to a halt would later come running to Congress in a panic to secure the kinds of incentives and investments we can pass today. Industry needs the certainty that comes with Congressional action.”</p>
<p>“Graham has tried to woo other Republicans with warnings that the Environmental Protection Agency will impose draconian regulations if Congress fails to act.”</p>
<p>So here it is. If Cap and Trade is not passed, the EPA is going to step in and regulate carbon anyway. How did this happen? Our elected weasels are the ones who has set this monster loose on the people. They have allowed an unelected bureaucracy to grow to the point that it has more power then congress.</p>
<p>While I have been picking on Lindsay Graham, I am now going to bring in the other 434 elected weasels. No one is standing up for the people. The first order of business TODAY is to come together and strip this type of power from the EPA. Have you heard anyone speaking out? They have all failed us. Lindsay seems to feel that if this bill passes, then we will be safe from the EPA. I say NO. Picking the lesser of two evils is no longer an option for this country. If you refuse to do what is right, the time has come for you to get out of the way.</p>

<p>I know I have said this before but the response I have been receiving is more than what I anticipated.  I originally formed the Future Funk Alliance to strengthen the dance community but then decided to take it to the next level.  I want The Future Funk Alliance to be able to strengthen not only the dance community but the artistic community as well.</p>
<p>For dancers we provide a workshops every Tuesday night <a title="Groove Night" href="http://futurefunkalliance.com/practice-locations/" target="_self">(Groove Night)</a> at <a title="The Future Dance Center" href="http://thefuturedancecenter.com" target="_blank">The Future Dance Center.</a> The workshop is a short 45 minute workshop on different styles of dance.  After the workshop there is a two-hour open practice where you can either practice what you have learned, learn something from one of the other dancers, or practice something completely different.  We also provide information about other open practice locations in the area.  In the future we hope to host more workshops as well as several events.  We plan on collaborating on an event with <a title="The Future Dance Center" href="http://thefuturedancecenter.com" target="_blank">The Future Dance Center</a> sometime in March, so keep your ears and eyes open.</p>
<p>For musicians, song writers, singers, poets, etc.. I would like to set up some sort of open mic night at a local coffee shop (Just a suggestion) where artists can share their work.  I am shooting for late March or the beginning of April to set this up but it really depends on the members willingness to cooperate and our ability to find a venue (Shouldn&#8217;t be a problem).</p>
<p>Besides an open mic night I would also like to set up some sort of feedback night where artists in general can bring their work whether it be illustrations, paintings, music, poetry, or any other type of art.  This is just to get some ideas or feedback about their work.</p>
<p>I hope to use this site as a networking tool.  Whenever someone is throwing an event, performing, or looking for someone to work with I would like to post that information on the site.  All of these ideas are open to suggestions and if there is any questions or concerns please refer to our <a title="Contact" href="http://futurefunkalliance.com/contact/" target="_self">contact section.</a></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I have been sadly neglectful of this blog of late. Yes, I&#8217;ve been cooking. Yes, I&#8217;ve even been taking pictures! But the updates? They do not come. I thought I would be blogging oodles more now that I&#8217;m down to 10 hours/week at work, but instead, I find myself sleeping in, knitting, vegging on the couch, and yes, cleaning like a madwoman.</p>
<p>October and November were seriously busy months for me, and the apartment has been just as seriously neglected. Starting on Wednesday, I began what will probably turn into a two-week effort to clean and thoroughly organize the whole apartment. Now, our apartment is not large. It&#8217;s not itty-bitty like some Manhattan digs, but it&#8217;s definitely not spacious and we have little to no storage space. Did I mention the walls are plaster so you can&#8217;t hang shelves (or pretty much anything else for that matter?) and that the kitchen only has two overhead cupboards and that they are half sized? And only three under-the-counter cupboards? (Not including under-sink storage). And the only counter space (about 2&#8242;x1.5&#8242;) being taken up by the microwave? Yeah. Space is at a premium everywhere. We&#8217;ve invested so far in one giant stainless steel shelf to go in our storage hallway (between the living room and bathroom, there is a recessed area where this shelf fit just perfectly) that has been our saving grace. As has the skinny, but towering stainless steel shelf in the kitchen. A highboy, bedside dresser, and shoe shelf (yes, I&#8217;m addicted, but it&#8217;s pretty well under control), and two nice under-bed storage boxes (complete with nifty wheels!) have been purchased in the last few months. As have some 3M hooks that I have since lost. And I cleaned one of our very wide windowsills to store our overflow books. But the storage battle continues.</p>
<p>The kitchen is the worst of it. I definitely need some hooks and a magnetic knife rack for utensils and more pots &#38; pans. I&#8217;m already hanging several skillets, potholders, a box grater, and my cutting boards on the cleverly provided hooks of the stainless steel tower. But I need more! Also, I need hooks for handbags, scarves, and belts. &#8216;Cause I have a lot of all three. And maybe some itsy bitsy hooks for necklaces. Because my jewelry box (not large to begin with) is kind of overflowing.</p>
<p>Part of the reason why all these storage issues got put off is because we just didn&#8217;t have the money to fix them all at once. But another reason was that we weren&#8217;t planning on staying in this apartment for long. Alas, the market for rental cottages is competitive around here, and our apartment is just so dirt cheap, that we&#8217;re staying for the foreseeable future, lack of storage, parking, and all. *sigh* So my dream cottage is on hold.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s nice to live in a clean house, though. I&#8217;m not the biggest fan of cleaning, not because of the actual act of cleaning itself, but mainly because I am lazy or would rather be doing other things. But I find that if I force myself to get started, it&#8217;s usually not so bad, and can actually be kind of fun. Case in point? Dishes. I hate doing them until I actually force myself to do them. Then I kinda like it. Working for a year at the pastry shop, which was filled with doing dishes, cleaning, and other mindless tasks like folding pastry boxes, interspersed with rushes of customers and crabby old ladies who drank all the house coffee, I learned that I actually kind of like mindless tasks. I wouldn&#8217;t want to do them all day, but compared with tasks where you actually have to think, they are quite relaxing and freeing. You can let your hands do all the work and have time to yourself to think about whatever you want or to not think at all. It&#8217;s nice.</p>
<p>So yes, if you&#8217;re wondering where I&#8217;ve been, this has been it. Work, school, more work, and hanging out with the boy took precedence over blogging, I&#8217;m afraid. On Wednesday night we went tree hunting and hit three Targets before finally finding the fake tree we wanted (the first two Targets were sold out of it! Popular tree, I guess&#8230;). Last night we set it up (only 4.5 ft tall! But 6 ft sitting on the milk crate we put it on to fit presents under it) and I decorated it with silver and blue glass ornaments I picked up from IKEA last year after Christmas for super cheap. We decided it needed a star topper, so we headed to the local grocery store/everything store that had a nice Christmas section and discovered that everything was half off! So we got a neat white star and some blueish LED mini star lights and now it looks even better! I will post a picture or two once the rest of the living room is clean. : ) Right now our pathetic 4-year old poinsettia and scraggly looking basil are shedding all over the windowsill in the back. *rolls eyes at self* The cleaning is never done!</p>
<p>*sigh* The boy will be home soon, so I&#8217;ve got to go finish packing. We&#8217;re going upstate to his parents&#8217; so I can get snow tires put on my car, as the current ones are pretty sucky in the snow. Thanks, Bank of Mom &#38; Dad!</p>
<p>At any rate, just wanted to update and hopefully someday soon I&#8217;ll get back in the groove of posting about food.</p>

With it&#8217;s close proximity to <a title="Furman University" href="http://www2.furman.edu/Pages/default.aspx#" target="_blank">Furman University</a>, the mountians, and <a title="City of Greenville" href="http://www.greenvillesc.gov/" target="_blank">downtown Greenville</a> the area offers something for everyone.<br />
     We have successfully sold all of our houses. This is very exciting and is another indicator that the market is moving in the right direction. Along with the interest in our inventory homes and the increased interest in custom homes, we are very excited about the future of this neighborhood, not to mention the overall housing market in the Upstate.<br />

<p><span style="color:#888888;">Over the Thanksgiving holiday, my sister-in-law, Meghan, decided she&#8217;d like to create a photo album of her new daughter, Liliana. Meghan, who lives in Virginia with Liliana, wanted to offer this album to our Grandma, Carol, for Christmas. See, Grandma lives in Upstate New York and has not yet had the chance to meet her great grand-daughter who recently turned 10 months old. Fortunately, I&#8217;ve had several portrait sessions with this little baby since her birth. So we sat down, Meghan and I, and edited all the pictures that I&#8217;ve taken over the past few months and years. After several hours of editing, we had our top 65 pictures.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#888888;">The best advice came from my step-brother-in-law, Matt, when he suggested that we use iPhoto to create our photo album. Having considered the cost of printing these images on our own and buying a separate photo album it really did make sense financially to have iPhoto make the book for us. So with a few drags and drops, our book was ready to be shipped! </span></p>
<p><span style="color:#888888;">I cannot wait to see Grandma&#8217;s reaction&#8230;a REAL book with pictures of her family?!? A dust jacket, hardcover and over 30 pages of family moments! I am already planning to have my point and shoot at my side so I can record her opening her gift. (She still gushes about the scarf I knit her 4 years ago that matches her winter jacket &#8220;perfectly&#8221;, and in my opinion, this album knocks the socks off that scarf!)<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#888888;">By the way, our Grandma is 88 years old, sharp as a tack with the memory of an elephant! This is going to be priceless!</span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>He drives past my house so my father won&#8217;t see and pulls up in the cul-de-sac circle, in the woods, and shrugs because he isn&#8217;t sure how to kiss me, he isn&#8217;t sure how to navigate the center console, or how to keep the windows of his Chevy from steaming up, or even the best way to wrap his arms around me to express what he wants to express, without scaring me back down to the city, without letting me think he just wants to be friends, so he smiles, and I smile, and together we sit together, just for a few moments, in un-silent silence in his Chevy in the woods, enveloped in the crickets and cold condensation and a decade-long crush and a soon-to-be crash.</p>

<p>&#8220;Of course I do. It never gets old. Except Kaufman did, and now he&#8217;s married.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Shut up,&#8221; Kaufman tells us. He&#8217;s smiling.</p>
<p>Graham is quiet but laughs silently. He looks taller, if that&#8217;s possible. All three—Kaufman, Steve and Graham—are over six two. Mike, who is five eleven at best, sighs contently.</p>
<p>We sit in the circle and look at the stars. They look out, not up, as Mike said once. We all remember.</p>
<p>We inhale in and exhale out and watch our breath evaporate into the hair.</p>
<p>&#8220;Remember how pissed Kaufman got?&#8221; asks Steve.</p>
<p>&#8220;Shut up,&#8221; says Kaufman.</p>
<p>&#8220;What about when L threw up in the woods over there?&#8221; asks Mike.</p>
<p>&#8220;Oh god,&#8221; I say.</p>
<p>&#8220;When did L throw up?&#8221; asks Steve.</p>
<p>&#8220;She threw up on Brian Leher&#8217;s dick.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Oh yeah&#8230;&#8221; says Steve.</p>
<p>Graham laughs silently.</p>
<p>&#8220;That night was terrible,&#8221; continues Mike. &#8220;And I think Brian filmed it all.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Oh god,&#8221; I repeat.</p>
<p>&#8220;What about that time with Kassi and Dana?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Old school.&#8221; We dismiss things easily.</p>
<p>&#8220;What about that time with Ghostbusters?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Ancient history.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Well I think it was awesome.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Were the stars this bright?&#8221; I ask, suddenly.</p>
<p>&#8220;When,&#8221; asks Graham, &#8220;in high school?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;No, that night we peed on Kaufman&#8217;s car.&#8221;</p>
<p>We all snicker, even Kaufman. It was a long time ago, and anyway, no one was around to film it.</p>

<p>He nods and turns the radio up.</p>
<p>I pull into a Mobil and up to a gas pump, fiddling around the dashboard to trigger to little tank door to unlatch.</p>
<p>&#8220;Over there,&#8221; points Mike. He looks amused.</p>
<p>&#8220;Thanks.&#8221; I open the door and walk outside. </p>
<p>My high heels click-clack around the car. It smells like gasoline, of course, but I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the scent. I step back into the car.</p>
<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s up?&#8221; he asks. </p>
<p>&#8220;The tank&#8217;s on the other side.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Good one,&#8221; says Mike.</p>
<p>I sigh. &#8220;Shit. Now I need to turn around.&#8221; I hike my dress down and turn the keys in the ignition and the car squeals.</p>
<p>&#8220;Nice,&#8221; says Mike.</p>
<p>I turn the radio off. &#8220;Shush!&#8221; </p>
<p>I swing the car around and back into the same spot to refuel. This time, I know where the latch is and the tank is on the correct side. I step out once more, click-clack over in my high heels and tight black dress, unscrew the cap, lift up the gas nozzle and turn to the digital payment buttons. </p>
<p>&#8220;What the hell?&#8221; I say. </p>
<p>Mike is staring at me through the glass. </p>
<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t understand, they want me to pay inside first?&#8221;</p>
<p>Mike makes a motion to his ear. He can&#8217;t hear me. He opens the door a crack. &#8220;What&#8217;s wrong?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I have to pay first? Why don&#8217;t they trust me?&#8221;</p>
<p>Mike steps out of the car. &#8220;Give me your credit card.&#8221; </p>
<p>I hand it over.</p>
<p>&#8220;Okay.&#8221; He puts the nozzle back, swipes my card, and press a few buttons. &#8220;Now you&#8217;re all set.&#8221; He gets back in the car and watches me, trying not to look amused. </p>
<p>&#8220;Thanks,&#8221; I mouth. </p>
<p>I put the nozzle back in the gas tank and decide to fill it up and check the messages on my BlackBerry, which works until it overflows and splashes out of the car&#8217;s tank all over my shoes. </p>
<p>Mike has no slouched down in the passenger seat, but I can see his shoulders rise and fall as he laughs. </p>
<p>I tug at my dress and kick the extra gasoline drops off my heels. Tossing my hair over my shoulder, I replace the gas nozzle and screw the cap back on. I click-clack away, sit back in the car and rest my head on the steering wheel. </p>
<p>My BlackBerry vibrates.</p>
<p>&#8220;Are you alright?&#8221; asks Mike. </p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m fine,&#8221; I say. &#8220;I&#8217;m totally fine, expect I don&#8217;t belong here anymore.&#8221;</p>

<p>My grandmother, of course, had had too much wine. We know this from her headache, yes. But we also know this from last night when she thumped her 82-year old shoulder against the fridge and shouted at nobody in particular:</p>
<p>&#8220;So what if I&#8217;m drunk! I&#8217;m drunk and I <em>like it</em>! So don&#8217;t tell <em>me </em>what to do!&#8221;</p>
<p>And now maybe we feel guilty, because we most certainly did not.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>The night before Thanksgiving runs not unlike a sitcom episode where the cast remembers past incidences, and they lean back into the couch and utter a few lines to set up old scenes, and the shot dissolves into something else from a different season with older hairstyles and dated plotlines.</p>
<p>The night before Thanksgiving should also be called National Eat Your Heart Out Formerly Popular Kids In High School Night. Gina&#8217;s had two babies and Tom&#8217;s gotten two DUIs. Everyone knows Russell&#8217;s girlfriend won&#8217;t sleep with him. We think she&#8217;s a lesbian, not like we care, but we feel for the guy.</p>
<p>The night before Thanksgiving, after ten years of shy smiles, is a good time to man up and finally kiss someone. It&#8217;s better than New Years Eve because it&#8217;s not scripted, is it? It&#8217;s not in that flashback scene, or anything the popular kids would notice. It is surprising, heavily anticipated and better-than-expectedly perfect.</p>
