Cafe Sabarsky hidden inside the Neue Galerie for German and Austrian art might be New York’s best kept secret. A legendary fashion photographer turned us on to it and we know why he loves it, you could be in Paris. It’s right on Fifth Avenue and the room looks straight across on to Central Park.

The cafe is a glorious wood panelled masterpiece modeled on the great Viennese cafes of the early twentieth century. It’s grand as grand can be and just being in the room makes you stand a little taller. But it’s the cakes, the rows of beautiful German cakes that make us swoon. We went on Sunday and even though all we wanted to do was eat cakes we decided to be grown up and order something savory first. We selected simple hard-boiled eggs with brioche toast so as to leave plenty of room for cakes. We nearly fell of our chair when the eggs arrived in a tall cocktail glass. They were cooked to perfection and delicious.

Then we went in for the kill and ordered as many cakes as we could. They didn’t disappoint, they were divine and the coffee impeccable. The entire restaurant has a grand old world European feeling which is rare in modern New York. It’s a few blocks away from both the Guggenheim and The Met which makes going to these museums now an entire different world as it will be forever an excuse to sample the delights of Cafe Sabarsky.

On our way out we poked our nose in to the museum bookstore. It stocks every book imaginable on German and Austrian culture and art and is well worth a look inside. You must also make time to check out the gallery itself. You could just stand and dream in front of the Gustav Klimt’s for hours. But if you want to eat at the cafe on the weekends, get there early as lines start to form closer to lunch time and for good reason.

Another off the menu special is a personal favorite version of our parfaits, blueberry and caramel apple with a cup of joe which, together, we call two cups of breakfast. Imagine sitting by open sunny windows with your morning paper and two simple cups in front of you, one hot, one cold. Talk about a balanced breakfast.

Best Parfait Ever, Blueberry and Caramel Apple

Here you get your fruit, dairy, and grain groups all represented and still have a light morning jolt of coffee. Antioxidants fill this feel-worthy, tasty, pretty blend of purple and golden caramel swirls for only$3.95. And you can get it to go, no problem. Have a caffeine to go with it for a healthier version of “double-fisting.” It’s another party in your mouth right off the Sheridan red line stop here in the growing Uptown / Wrigleyville community of Chicago.

Some of the tasty things are simply not in front of your nose but rather off the menu.

mmmm, blueberry

Speaking of off, come right off the Sheridan red line stop for anything on our menu and tasty things “off the menu,” one of which is this delicious post of french toast. Word to your mouth, only two customers have purchased this tasty breakfast plate since the inception (that’s right, we said inception) of the new company cook, Jeremiah Johnson and let us tell you, that is an awesome french spread! Don’t decide because of a blog or a post, simply come in and bite for yourself (please note we did not tell you to bite yourself). There is a lot more “special” reasons to come into your neighborhood Wriglyville coffee house, or should we say your Uptown cafe? You decide, we’re here either way and getting a little more new.

Our lovely facelift continues in house including new paint on the ceiling, new lighting fixtures, new chairs and new menus so it only makes sense for our logo and online presence to also receive a new look. Coming soon!

And to call back to more “special reasons” to visit us, don’t forget about our weekly, free, BYOB night of entertainment the Green Screen Variety Hour at 8p.m. produced in part of the gang that brought you the Game Show of HELL, Awesomonster Comedy. See the events page for more details. Until then (and to steal a bit from Iron Chef America) “[We] bid you good eating.”
