This post is to let you know that I’m working on a review of Wale’s album Attention Deficit right now, should be up soon. The album is good though, know that. Perhaps even worth paying cash-money for (he’s given you enough free ish already, hasn’t he?). I also wanted to post something where I could use this ridiculous, but awesome, graphic I found; I hope to someday be reincarnated as a mixtape artist. Aside from this graphic, this pic of Wale has been used for the single to “Nike Boots” as well as the cover for The Mixtape About Nothing. It was taken while I was at URB for the cover of their 150th issue, so I always get sentimental when I see it.
Speaking of URB, they just launched their new site, scope it!

Below is–what I think is–the best track on the album “TV in the Radio” which has a guest-verse from K’Naan. Ill.

It has been a long while since I’ve last updated It’s 1221. I’ve caught up synching all my writing from URB, I’m settled back home, and I’m embarking on a new internship with WWD. To get to the point, it feels like an appropriate time to start writing again.

My first week at WWD was rather tame because we are not shooting right now and LA Fashion Week (month, really) is just beginning. The highlight for me was getting to do some research for inspiration pictures for shoots that we will be doing in the near future. I won’t know for a few more days if I will be heading to any of the collections, but it’s thrilling to be a part of a place I’ve been trying to work at for so long. Our office is very small, and it’s to my advantage because I get to see the entire process from start to finish—creating the idea, pitching, research, samples, shoots, and then the final product. Again, it seems like the right time to be doing this for me.

I still have lots of projects to do for URB, and I’ll try to keep the blog organized and updated. Besides doing all this stuff, taking my class, and looking for a job… ah. I just saw Fool’s Gold at a private show at Hollywood Forever, and I got to talk with Nicki and Paul from IAMSound. Those are some of the coolest folks I’ve met in awhile; I was quite smitten. Yeah, I did that on my day off. For work. It’s fun and keeps me out of trouble! Plus, giving me inspiration for my own project. The Fool’s Gold show and interview is part of something I’m working on for URB, and I hope to get that all together soon.

Currently digging Telepathe, and I’ve been playing Dance Mother pretty much non-stop since Wednesday. Just got the newest Headlights album, Wildlife, and two albums for review–one from The Prairie Cartel and Globes on Remote.

Looking for new artists to do features on, and trying to plan out when I can conduct those interviews and make some freshness. I won’t say who I’m thinking about reaching out to, but two UK acts, one Mexican, one Puerto Rican, and one American.

I’m just catching up on the last collections that I wanted to check out. The Paris shows are so enchanting, and the majority of my favorite ones are located there.

I think the next post will be my picks from the spring/summer shows.

Dear friends, readers and clients,

In 19 years, URB has ridden the highs and lows of the print media industry. And through all of it, we have had a lot of fun staying independent and committed to our audience and brand. But no sea change has been as dramatic and as profound as what has occurred in the past 18 months. To simply blame the prevailing conditions on the financial markets is only partially accurate. We’re experiencing an incredible and sweeping shift in consumption and media habits worldwide, especially in the magazine market. It’s affecting giant publishers like Condé Nast as well as niche publishers like us.

For these are other reasons (read on), effective after Issue 158 (Summer 2009), we have decided to take a hiatus from the print edition of URB so that we can evaluate the landscape, relaunch URB.COM and decide where we fit in the new, new legacy media ecosystem. But before you file us away in the dead tree pile of deceased brands, we’re not troubled by this move (OK, we shed a tear or two). In fact, we’re excited by this challange. We think that with the dramatic democratization of the Web (for suppliers and consumers), there are opportunities we could have only dreamed about as URB was forming in 1990. As a matter of fact, if there was a World Wide Web in 1990, we probably wouldn’t have printed URB in the first place. Today, we are already immersed in this digital arena and look forward to going much deeper (Have you followed us on Twitter yet @urbmag?). Despite the economy, this is actually a truly great time to be in media.

In the immediate and interim, URB will produce digital editions (Check out this year’s Next 100 issue at: www.urb.com/15thNext100), our next one due out in mid-October. We’d love to discuss having your brand involved and explain how our social media distribution model, audience projections and value ads can make a great package that is a real recession rate value. Also, in October, we will be launching the all new URB.COM. And we promise this will be more than a routine facelift. We are rebuilding the entire structure, user interface and content management of the site. We have truly embraced the Web 2.0 (um, 3.0?) world and are thrilled at the prospects of our new site. We’d love to have you be a part of it.

We also have several new initiatives in the works, from events, custom publishing, our expanding interactive and social media network. We see this new economy as an opportunity to diversify and return to some of the original inspiration that started us off almost two decades ago. We’ll be in touch to share more but wanted you to be the first to know.

Thanks for everything.
Warmly,
Raymond Leon Roker
Co-Founder and Publisher

P.S. We’ll be celebrating URB’s 20th year in 2010 with a number of special events, partnerships and announcements. I hope to be working with many of you as we plan our year.

This, of course, applies not only to music publications, but the main players here are all veterans of that particular monthly mag grind.

Jeff Chang, former writer for Vibe and author of the excellent Can’t Stop Won’t Stop, on his blog, re-posted a social media dialogue on the current state of music publications. The other participants were Alan Light, former editor at Vibe and Spin, and Raymond Roker, creator and editor of URB. The conversation is thoughtful and intelligent, as well as all-encompassing, stretching far beyond the edges of the blog post into the comments section, where many other editors jump in to share their sides of the story. All in all it’s fascinating reading for anybody interested in the future of this kind of journalism, one that is in danger of disappearing.

Check it all out at Jeff Chang’s excellet blog here
