Cincinnatian Alli, the lovely lass behind One Pearl Button, attended last Saturday’s Crafty Supermarket in Northside, and was kind enough to post photos of her purchases, including some of our own work!

If you didn’t get yours, we still have a few available in the print section of our online shop. Each one is unique, printed on [sometimes layered] test prints from our previous projects. $10, postage paid.

Alli also inexplicably sent us this photo of a couple of wanna-be hipster doofuses. I have no idea what’s going on here. I think he’s saying, “What the what?” and she’s wondering if someone farted. Who are these crazy kids?

Halloween Postmortem/Costume Roundup: Went to the Family Dollar on Oct. 30 & it was already Chri

Halloween Postmortem/Costume Roundup:

Went to the Family Dollar on Oct. 30 & it was already Christmas! The carols were cranking and all they had for Halloween was one lonely shelf of Jack-’o-Lantern lollipops and Silly String. I guess I could have dressed as a candy cane factory…

At the Duane Reade on Myrtle, the options had dwindled to “Sexy Cop,” “Kinky Witch,” and “Asylum Inmate.” As so many people struggle with mental illness, I was a little surprised at the un-P.C. nature of “Asylum Inmate”, who sported a “straitjacket” and a Hannibal Lecter-style mouth grill.

Saw an African-American family with three kids walking down the street. The older kids were sort of generic witchy things but the three-year old boy was toddling along in a l’il cop uniform and toting an outsize toy handgun. (Fortunately the gun was neon orange, unlike the realistic toy gun that got a guy on my street killed by the cops a few years back.) An odd costume choice in a neighborhood where folks often complain of police brutality? Or a sign of diversity on the Force?

On a similar note, see the picture on Flickr of the tot at a Bed-Stuy Halloween Party (at the Municipal Pool?) with the mini squad car:

PS- Can’t figure out why every single person in that photo is white if it’s on the street in Bed-Stuy.

My vote for:

Nerviest Costume (spotted by a friend in an East Village bar): Joseph Fritzl of Austrian incest dungeon fame. Immediately recognizable by the eyebrows…

Most Obscure Costume: President Taft. (F Train)

Most Puzzling Costume: Ghandi completely covered with blue body paint. (Sunset Park)

Most Distressing Costume: Obese Princess Leia in white stretch jumpsuit. (Park Slope)

Sign o’ the Times: Gumby on his cell phone. (Fort Greene)

Most Buxom Wenches: The Carriage House Inn (Park Slope)

Most Mixed Metaphor: Baby Butterfly wearing Diamond Tiara (Bed-Stuy)

Most Generic Costume: Fishnets and glitter and just looking like a slut. (Bed-Stuy, Everywhere)

This is the first year that I’ve understood how Halloween works in Bed-Stuy. When I first move

This is the first year that I’ve understood how Halloween works in Bed-Stuy. When I first moved here, I lived on a predominantly industrial block lined by warehouses, auto shops, and vacant lots, so trick-or-treaters weren’t on my radar. Having grown up in the Detroit area, I was much more concerned about “Devil’s Night.” However, they don’t seem to have that the same way in NYC; just the odd egg, not too much setting things on fire.

In 2005, we moved to a brownstone block, which seemed much more suburban. We had been slowly renovating the creaky old Victorian house over a period of years. I knew that my former tenants, one of whom was a props manager and stagehand, had created a haunted house in the still-derelict floors and invited the neighborhood children to tour it. With its crumbling plaster and exposed lath, crude Masonic diagrams crayoned on the walls, the cobwebby spiral stairwell, and the lengths of BX dangling like jungle lianas from the ceiling, it must have looked the part even without the skeletons and masks. In the basement kitchen, its wainscoting black with ancient shellac, my tenants had erected a pasteboard graveyard with epitaphs for all the former residents who still received mail at this former boarding house and S.R.O.. Scary as the house might have been for the children, the flaking lead paint, holes in the floor, and feral dogs in the yard must have been a lot scarier to any parents who found out about it. (And to any stray designer who might wander in off the street, the layers of grimy turquoise and yellow paint covering the mahogany woodwork would have been more frightening still.) And in retrospect, for me it was a veritable Liability Nightmare on Elm Street.

Given this notoriety, I was at least expecting trick-or-treaters and I dutifully stocked up on Mr. Goodbars and Hershey Kisses at the dollar store. By five pm, I was ready. I waited and waited. Nobody rang my bell. I could see the odd gaggle of kids in costume, apparently heading for a party, but no families traipsing door to door. Gazing out at the crack house down the street, it dawned on me why trick-or-treating might not become a tradition in the inner city. You just don’t know who’s going to answer the door. The next year I bought one bag of candy as insurance, but still no comers. Then I gave up.

This year, as I was strolling to the Duane Reade in search of a last-minute Feline Frenzy makeup kit, I observed that people with candy will sometimes come down with a big bowl and stand at their gates handing it out to passing kids so that no one has to knock on doors. The trick of of Trick or Treating in the ‘hood is revealed.

Still, the Halloween Party for kids seems to be a popular alternative. There was a huge party swarming with little ghouls and goblins at the Pentacostal Church on Nostrand Ave. I was a little surprised because I know that many evangelical denominations think Halloween is satanic. However, this one was really rocking and rolling. I swear that someone with a microphone was belting out something about Jesus vanquishing all the ghouls and demons, but to be fair that could have been my imagination and it could have been the Monster Mash. And clearly, a good time was had by all.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image,in the image of God he created him; male and female

Genesis 1:27
So God created man in his own image,in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Romans 3:23

For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

1 John 3:10

By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

People today are clinging onto anything as a way to separate themselves from the crowd. Not only to be an individual but also to find out who they are. They are on a fact finding mission to find out who they are and what is Ultimate Truth. God has revealed who we are and why we were created in the Bible. As Christians we hold, read, memorize the answer to their questions and yet we don’t share with them the answer. We some how find them unworthy to be saved so we won’t share the Gospel with the world. Kind of a survival of the fittest attitude and as long as we are saved who cares about them. I would remind you Jesus said “not all you call me Lord will be saved.” You are getting your identity from what you do as well and not from you Lord and Creator. Christianity is not a game. Where we get our identity from and where we get our sexuality from should first and foremost be from our creator. We are not what we do! Your identity is not your job. Your identity is not based on how or with whom you like to have sex with. You can not chose your own identity as much as a fork gets to chose its identity. We must get our identity from our creator, just like everything else does. As human we are all created in the image of God. We are also created specifically man and woman. These identities are not interchangeable. It would be like using a fork for eating soup.

All mankind has been created with a sin nature. We are all sinners, Christian, non-Christian alike. All humans are basically bad and it is only by the Holy Spirit and God’s common grace that we can act any different. We are not clean slates at birth and we only get tainted through time. A baby in its mothers womb is fit for the fire of hell. From conception we have a sin nature that makes us naturally bad. Romans 14:23 tells us any thing that does not come from faith is a sin. Well did you tie your shoes in faith today. Did you wake up glorifying God this morning. In traffic were you blessing the other motorists and praiseing God in faith. We are all BAD! I am bad, you are bad. Praise be to God for His grace and mercy. These two parts of our identity we share but this third part is what separates all mankind.

We are either children of God or children of the devil. The Bible tells us that it is by our actions that we can tell which one we are. From the state of our heart overflows our actions. Your actions do not change your heart, only God can do that. Your heart affects your actions. We are created eternal beings, some of us will go to heaven eternally and some of us will go to hell eternally. Jesus is our hope not only for eternal life but for eternal life in fellowship with God.

We are neither created heterosexual nor homosexual. The difference is homosexuality is an abomination to God. ‘These are man made terms based on what we do. Again you identity is not what you do. You can not be either of these because they represent a set of actions. You can act either of them out but at your core this is not who you are. The New Testament has many people who did not marry to our knowledge. Jesus, Paul, Timothy, Barnabas, these are just a few example of those who didn’t marry. You don’t need to feel attracted to anyone. That doesn’t make you homosexual or should not be a cause of concern. God may have given you a gift to serve Him with out distraction for His purposes. As humans we have a lust problem. The Bible tells us God is love, therefore we can not love without God. If God is not in us we are lusting and perverting but we are not loving. Therefore you may be called to a life a celibacy, I know that is not popular in our culture. The church is the bride of Christ. So in marriage a husband represents Christ to his wife and God to his children until they are of an understanding age. The wife represents the Church of Christ and is respectful of her husband. That is why we have marriage and that is why it is between a man and a woman. Not for us to get off and degrade one another. Is your wife your image of absolute beauty? If not you had better change that image so she is and every time your wife changes so does that image to match her. Marriage is a covenant with God saying that you will portray the image of Christ and the Church as husband and wife.

We are created in the image of God, we are all sinners, and we are either children of God or children of the devil. If we claim to be anything else we are displaying a deep ignorance of our identity. We are not relying in God’s supremacy in creating us, giving us our identity and we are putting what we do above what God did.

I’ve been off the grid for a while, doing all kinds of stuff. A lot of it is actually what my parents would call “constructive”, but there’s been a few time-wasters in there as well, and one of those was the TV show Entourage. I’ve just done the entire 6 seasons.

No idea why, but it was just one of those shows I never got to the first time around. I’m not even sure that it’s scheduled on Singapore TV. I suspect not because it contains adult themes, and our media doesn’t really think we’re mature enough to handle those. That’s not the reason though, because I can’t remember the last time I actually watched something on Singapore TV. Mediacorp… feel free to send me a survey form and I’ll tell you why.

On the surface it’s a guys’ fantasy about 4 friends (and their agent) making good in LA, but I found a lot to love underneath. For a start it’s in a tight, slickly scripted 30 minute format. But also, and perhaps this is because I watched 6 seasons in one continuous run, it’s a lovely example of complex character exploration. You’d think it was going to revolve around pretty superstar Vince (Adrian Grenier), but actually he turns out to be quite one-dimensional in comparison to the others. As an ensemble piece it unfolds quite slowly. The characters you start off hating you grow to love, the ones that seemed to be in the background step into the light, and the relationships between them build in complexity.

I think there’s some beauty in that. In my work and leisure at the moment there seems to be a lot of immediacy. It’s as if attention spans have shrunk to the size of a peanut and so everything has been sliced to sashimi-thinness for easy digestion.

Perhaps that’s true. Maybe we just don’t have the time, motivation or cognitive capacity to take our time with things anymore.

Or maybe everyone is just assuming that it’s true, and we’re giving each other what we think we want.

No doubt there’s a lot of cleverness tied in with immediacy. Punchy copy, lots of take-that-as-read, a great respect for the literacy of the audience.

But as that cycle gets faster and faster, I think at some point a new respect will grow for the long exposition. Because there’s a lot of cleverness in that too.

As I indicated at the end of my last journal entry, I left Serenity Valley for the winter (rest assu

As I indicated at the end of my last journal entry, I left Serenity Valley for the winter (rest assured, dear readers, my hut in the woods adventures will resume in a few months). The reason for leaving was almost entirely financial — I’d simply run out of cash… and credit. Without cash, I couldn’t prepare my hut for yet colder and wetter climates. Without cash, I’d have to choose between paying this month’s payment on the (small) loan I took out to buy the land, or health insurance. Not to mention, you know, car payments, food, gas, cell phone, and all those other recurring expenditures.

Yes, the reality is, even though I “lived” in the woods in a $600 hut, I was still not completely free. I still had shackles in the form of bills1

So, I came out of the woods, and headed back to Silicon Valley to start a short-term consulting gig I had waiting for me. The gig is part time, and I can work from pretty much anywhere, so in theory, I don’t have to “live” in Silicon Valley. But I want to. I lived here for 4 years before I moved away, and the roots I established during those years still remain here. I have friends here. My shooting club is here, as are shooting ranges. And, besides, if I’m working in tech again, it makes sense to be here. Oh, and it’s nice and warm here too

But there’s one problem. Having built a $600 hut in the woods, I’m having a hard time justifying paying for an apartment or room. For those of you not familiar with the area, a 1 bedroom apartment starts at around $1000 here. If I share a place, I might pay $600 instead. Per month. That’s a new hut I could be building every month.

I recently did some calculations, and realized that I’d paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $50,000 in rent during the 4 years I lived here. Some people will argue that that’s why it makes sense to buy a house. Sure, if you considered money to be the most important resource, then buying would likely save you a ton of money. But to me, money isn’t the most important resource; time is. And buying even a cheap condo in the area means taking out a huge mortgage, that would take 15, 20, 30 years to pay off. That’s 15, 20, 30 years of financial obligations. That, to me, sounds like a 15, 20, 30 year prison sentence. I’m not going to prison, just to put a roof over my head2.

So, I’m trying to find the equivalence of my $600 hut in this (sub)urban forest. I even considered buying land out here and, yes, building an actual hut. But that’s simply not feasible. Land around here is scarce and insanely expensive, and, not to mention, I’m pretty sure I’d have city inspectors swarming me the instant I erected a single two-by-four without a permit.

Rather, the same way my hut was an exercise in minimalism, I’m trying to apply the same idea here. That process starts by asking the question, “What do I need?” For starters, I need a place to sleep. I have that covered right now, since my “employer” has graciously offered to look the other way if he were to find me sleeping at the office. Then, what else do I need? I need to bathe, occasionally. Here’s a dirty (literally) little secret: I can go for days without showering before anyone notices. Last night I borrowed a friend’s shower. Perhaps I can keep rotating between various friends’ showers… Or maybe I’ll get a gym membership, to use the showers. What else do I need? I could use a kitchen, so that I don’t waste money eating out. Well, except, maybe I could live off of sandwiches, and eat out occasionally if I wanted a warm meal. Sandwiches don’t require a kitchen to make, and are cheap.

So I have all of the above covered, without paying rent. But there’s one thing missing: it’s that sense of home you get from having your own place. Partially, it’s about privacy. Partially, it’s about freedom. And partially, it’s purely psychological. Whatever it is, it’s somewhat unsettling to not have that. On the other hand, I’ve been practically homeless for the last 3 months, except for when I was living in my hut, and I’ve become accustomed to that feeling. At least, accustomed enough that I wonder if it’s worth paying hundreds of dollars a month to make it go away.

There are also smaller inconveniences. For instance, I went to the range yesterday, and then didn’t have anywhere I could go afterwards to clean my rifle. I probably could’ve done that at the office, especially since there’s nobody there, but there’s a bit of a resistance to bringing an AR-15 to a place of work. Along similar lines, I’ll eventually need a place to setup my reloading equipment. One of the last things I did before moving out of my apartment back in April was to load as much ammo as I could. Nikki and I loaded something like 700 rounds, in between packing up the apartment and hauling things to the storage unit, but now that I’m shooting again, I’ll probably go through that in a month or two. But I don’t need an apartment to clean a rifle or reload. Maybe I could rent a storage unit and setup my reloading bench in there — if I ignore that clause about no hazardous materials…

In any case, I’m still at that stage where I’m looking at various options, and weighing the pros and cons. I’ll keep y’all posted on how things pan out…

Footnotes:

I should note that my total combined (non-cash) financial assets are still greater than my obligations. In other words, if I liquidated my non-cash assets, I could pay off all my debt, and thus “buy” my freedom.

Comparing a mortgage to prison might be a little harsh, since you can get out of mortgages, either by selling your house, or by simply foreclosing. But I imagine there’s a huge mental barrier for that, and I’d rather not build a prison in my head either.

A few days ago, Over-the-Rhine blogger The Walking Green mentioned some of the benefits of living in a walkable neighborhood, and also her Walk Score, which is 92/100. Mine is actually 98/100! Do you believe that? I actually do walk to pretty much everything I want and need, so my score doesn’t entirely surprise me.

However, the Walk Score is a bit misleading, as some of the nearest establishments are not nearly as relevant or useful as it may suggest, and some others no longer exist. In fact, I had some thoughts about the Walk Score earlier this year.

This particular corner store isn’t quite a close to my house as Bang’s Mkt. was, but it’s pretty damn close. If only it were open!

I’ve been spoiled by larger cities in which I’ve lived, where I’ve had corner store options. My options here include the Vine St. Kroger, Garfield Market, Avril Bleh, Sunshine Fine Foods, Silverglade’s, Walgreen’s, and three CVS stores. How many of those are actual corner stores? How many are on my corner, or even a block away?

When you factor in the “closed on Sundays” and “closed on Mondays” [WTF, Avril Bleh?], lack of evening hours, and the limited availability of certain mundane items in some of these stores, my quick trip to the so-called corner store can easily turn into a highly organized five-stop tour, executed with a bit of advance planning. It can be done; I do it. Life could be simpler, though.

Who’s going to reopen this corner store? Do I have to do it?

Au Revoir Simone playing at Yugong Yishan last night. I know it seems like an insanely trivial drawb

Au Revoir Simone playing at Yugong Yishan last night.

I know it seems like an insanely trivial drawback, but you’d be surprised at what a difference it makes.

For the uninitiated, eye-sex is the act of seeing someone hot and looking at them somewhat lustfully, and to one’s delight find that the look is returned. (When it’s not returned, I call it “eye-rape”.) It can happen in a split second, but you know when it’s there. And it’s AWESOME.

For the single girl or boy, especially ones like me for whom hookups (even just kissing) are few and far between (I’m talking YEARS), eye-sex is a very necessary part of one’s life. I mean geez, I’m not asking for much, right? I’m not asking for love, for a boyfriend, for any real action of any kind. Just the occasional “damn, you’re fine!” look from someone I reciprocally feel that towards.

Those looks really don’t mean much. Except for maybe one or two occasions, they’ve never gone anywhere. And they’re not meant to. They’re just a cheeky and quick, unspoken exchange between two strangers. And for me it adds a sprinkle of magic to my day. Even though I’m single, the city becomes enveloped with the perfume of potential romance.

There are some cities that have provided a higher frequency of “eye-sex” than others: cities such as London, New York and Barcelona (at a minimum, daily). While others, such as Sydney, the rate was much lower. But no major city has provided such a dismal rate as Brother.

Of course, the critical question is, which is it? No good-looking boys? Or are the good-looking boys not interested in me?

Firstly, I have to refer to my friend Rachel who described our distinct brand of “sex appeal” perfectly:

9:23 PM Rachel: you know, I was thinking today when I did my grocery shopping
it’s kind of like websites, or magazines
ridiculously hot people, in the best possible way, are kind of like ninemsn
9:24 PM they have a broad appeal – most people will find something they like, and a few will find nothing
I’m more of a niche website like… I don’t know – Jezebel
9:25 PM Rachel: not everyone will like me, but the people that do are far more likely to be the people I want to like me than if I was ninemsn
it’s filtered down
me: lulz! that’s great and so true

So perhaps it’s not so surprising that some of my favourite cities are also the ones I’ve received the most eye-sex in. After all, the kind of guys I like, and that like me, have, like me, been drawn to live in these dynamic, creative, lively and romantic world cities.

Although Brother may very well turn into such a city, at the moment it is not. At the moment, one does not move to Brother to find the world’s top, innovative, coolest, most cutting edge, most interesting companies, communities, scenes or what have you. And so it follows, at the moment the city is not populated by such people. It is still, very much, a city of a developing world. And in which the majority of the inhabitants work very hard, living almost desperate lives, with little time for frivolities like “creativity”.

So, on both hands, I neither see many guys I’m into, nor are many guys into me. In fact, to the Unclese male population, I’m probably this big (I’m big for Unclese girls), weirdly dressed, must-be-foreign, Unclese girl. And nothing much more.

So yeah, it’s kind of hard to carry the magic when everyday you head out into the biting cold weather, look up at the grey sky, and know that for the next 1.5 years you’re probably not going to even get any eye-sex, let alone something a little deeper than that.

If you’re wondering, exactly, what is the rate for Brother I can tell you. In the 3 months since I arrived I’ve had only two real incidents of eye sex. And they both happened last night!

Two friends and I went to a gig featuring New York band Au Revoir Simone (to get specific, they hail from hipster/indie central Williamsburg, Brooklyn – of course). There were a lot of Americans in the crowd, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the two Unclese guys I had quick, flirtacious eye-sex (or it was more innocent than that, perhaps eye-kissing, or eye-hands-holding) – turned out to be ABCs (American born Unclese).

Perhaps the only times I will get any eye-sex are when I go to things that are in some way connected to the cities I love.

After Au Revoir Simone a strange German guy sang electro songs as a giant, blown-up silver penis bobbled up and down next to him.

Now, she’s talking!

Yes, Seriously McMillan has written the books and those mannerly looks, but what the heck is she saying in the new Seriously McMillan Show?

I just love doing radio and podcasts, goodness forbid that I have to do a video and I am not wearing the right makeup…Oh no!

It’s not vanity for Author Seriously McMillan, it’s about practicing what she preaches about using good taste in all aspect of your life, including public appearance.

I am aware of my image and sometimes I just can’t get all the bells and whistles in the right places, but, I will not let that take away from the message. You don’t need to see my face to hear what I am saying.

So, has Seriously retired from doing videos?

“No”, she says, “But podcasts about manners, etiquette and good taste are better because if I become inspired to do a podcast in the middle of the night, I can…Without worrying about hair and makeup.”

What is Seriously talking about in her new show called About A Few Things: The Seriously McMillan Show?

She talking about a few things that are timely and savvy. Current events and private ones. How to live your best life while learning and applying respect, manners, etiquette, courtesy and civility.

Seriously bite-sized podcasts are the perfect inspiration to wake up to, so catch her show LIVE in the mornings or finish your evening downloading and listening to a “Seriously inspired” podcast to make the next day a great.

I am working on keeping my podcasts under 15 minutes, some special topics I will chat about for half hour. The messages in my podcasts are food for though. They come quick, simple and easy to apply to life.

So take a look…rather a listen to Seriously McMillan’s blog talk radio show and enjoy.
