Why the mess of infection and neglect huddled behind the “Not Available” sign caught my eye is still somewhat beyond my understanding—but he did, and I fell in love with the story behind his frightened, runny eyes. He’s young and gentle, despite being so obviously confused by his surroundings. He’s curious but scared half to death, and he flinches any time a hand is extended to him. He happily took food from my fingers though, and even looked over my shoulder from behind to see if there was more where that came from.

And when faced with the prospect of re-entering the noisy kennel full of barking dogs that scared him even more than my hand did, he found a burst of courage and scrabbled all four paws into my lap, where he froze with an “Aw crap, what have I done?” look on his face. As I scratched his back, he regarded my hand with a puzzled expression, as if he’d never known a hand to do THIS before. He was carried back to his kennel, safely wrapped in what might have been the only pair of arms that hadn’t hurt him before, and when I went back to say goodbye an hour later, he ventured to the kennel door, licked my hand hesitantly, and then sat back on his haunches and looked at me quizzically, as if he couldn’t quite figure out what it was I wanted.

He’s listed as a shar-pei/mastiff mix, though he’s only the size of a shar-pei—I guess it’s hard to tell with the demodex so heavily masking his natural appearance. He will not be placed for adoption and will be euthanized on Wednesday, December 2 without rescue. If you could see how gentle he is despite his fear, and how much he WANTS to trust people … how he keeps coming back, and trying again and again … it might be easier to understand why he got under my skin. There is so much potential for this could-be-beautiful boy to forget what’s happened to him and to feel better; please help him realize it. I can help with pull and transport within the area (or heck, maybe not so within the area, if it came down to it … state lines, shmate lines … ). I will drive him on my dime, and I do have the ability to get him fully vaccinated and heartworm/lyme/ehrlichia tested for the receiving rescue for $50, if that helps at all … please help me help him to get out there and on to a better life. He deserves more … so much more.

The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) reports eight additional people have died and tested positive for H1N1. This does not mean H1N1 has been determined to be the cause of death, which is established by the attending physician or the Medical Examiner.

The deceased are:

* A 44-year-old-male with underlying medical conditions
* A 35-year-old female with underlying medical conditions
* A 41-year-old female with underlying medical conditions
* A 42-year-old female with no underlying medical conditions
* A 47-year-old male with underlying medical conditions
* A 67-year-old male non-resident with underlying medical conditions
* A 46-year-old male non-resident with underlying medical conditions
* A 48-year-old female non-resident with underlying medical conditions

The total number of people who have tested positive for H1N1 and died locally is 45. Thirty-eight individuals were San Diego County residents while the others seven were non-residents visiting our community at the time of their death. San Diego County has had 659 hospitalized cases of H1N1 to date.

Second Dose of H1N1 Vaccine for Children Less than 10 Years Old

Children 6 months through 9 years old (until they turn 10 years old) need to receive two doses of H1N1 vaccine. Infants younger than 6 months of age are too young to get the 2009 H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines. The CDC recommends that the two doses of 2009 H1N1 vaccine be separated by 3 to 4 weeks.

The second dose of H1N1 vaccine will be given to children when there is additional H1N1 vaccine supply in the community. Parents should call their children’s regular medical provider to schedule an appointment for the second dose. If their children’s medical provider does not have H1N1 vaccine (or has not ordered H1N1 vaccine), the second dose may be obtained from a County clinic when additional H1N1 vaccine arrives in the community. It is OK if the second dose of the H1N1 vaccine is given more than 3 to 4 weeks after the first dose – 3 weeks is the shortest recommended time in between the two H1N1 vaccines. While children 6 months through 9 years of age may have some protection against H1N1 infections after the first dose, the most effective protection will come from getting two doses.

La terreur des boîtes mails est là. Elle vous regarde de ses petits yeux invisibles, attendant patiemment que vous cliquiez dessus. Non, il ne s’agit pas d’un spam (un pourriel, rendons à la francophonie ce qui lui appartient) vous proposant une pompe à pénis suédoise pouvant rajouter 5 cm à votre sexe en moins de 2 jours, ni d’un message d’une mystérieuse Natasha vous proposant un lien vers sa webcam (les spams proposent rarement des liens vers des sites de vente d’électroménager, allez savoir pourquoi), mais de bien pire.

C’est un mail de votre amie Caroline.

Et alors ? Et alors l’objet du message commence par “Fw :” et contient des mots comme “important” ou “faites suivre SVP“

Mon dieu, non… Pas ça… Pas une de ces putains de chaîne vous dites vous… Et puis, impossible de mettre l’adresse de Caroline dans la catégorie “Spam” ou encore de lui renvoyer un mail simplement annoté d’un “Caroline, tu m’envoies encore un mail de ce style et je t’éclate ta petite gueule avec la portière de ta Mini de pétasse” ; non, vous ne voulez pas perdre le contact avec elle. Car Caro, elle est quand même sympa (pour vous mesdemoiselles)/elle a de gros seins (pour vous messieurs), alors non, couper les ponts est hors de question.

Caroline fait partie de cette catégorie de gens naïfs qui ont envie de rendre service ; alors quand un message lui parait important, qu’il sert une cause juste et qu’il est recommandé de le faire suivre, elle le fait. Attention, quand je dis cause juste, ça reste les causes des chaînes mails : La semaine du bisous, de l’amitié, un nouveau virus arrive en ville, facebook va devenir payant, le mail qui attire la chance, l’argent, et toutes sortes de choses, ou une cause politique pas du tout caricaturale type “La forêt amazonienne va être transformée en aéroport pour avions livreurs de 4×4” ou quelque chose du même goût. Bref, que du crédible.

Pourtant, Caroline, il est facile de reconnaître les messages piégeux ! Tout d’abord, ils sont toujours indiqués “urgent“, “faire suivre à tous vos contacts“, “important“, de manière trop lourde : si c’était vraiment si important, la simple lecture du message suffirait. Et pour faire plus important encore et être sûûûr que personne ne loupe l’info, ce type de messages est souvent écrit en Comic sans MS taille 22 avec des phrases en rouge, d’autres en vert, d’autres encore en bleu… Ajoutons à cela d’autres rituels variés : quelques bonnes fautes d’orthographe et un tutoiement de rigueur (internet mon amour) sont de la partie, ainsi qu’un sens approximatif de l’utilisation des majuscules et du soulignage.  Enfin, le nombre de “>” avant chaque phrase permet de constater avec effroi le nombre de fois où le dit mail a été renvoyé par d’augustes andouilles. Si c’était si pratique que ça, on imagine que des administrations fortement productrices en documents comme l’Etat s’en inspireraient. Un essai fut d’ailleurs tenté en 1914, avec un succès relativement mitigé, étant donné le peu de personnes disposant d’une connexion à internet à l’époque. Je me suis cependant procuré un extrait de ce mail aux archives nationales :

Cet épisode méconnu de notre histoire a pourtant marqué les esprits, bien que ce soit la version papier de ce document (une version plus allégée et plus sobre, il est vrai) qui soit restée dans les livres.

Ca a quand même vachement moins de gueule qu'une bonne chaîne.

Comprends-tu Caroline ? Depuis cet échec (vu le peu de personnes ayant fait suivre le message à l’époque sur internet), plus aucune administration sérieuse ne prend le risque de faire ce genre de messages. Alors, je sais que souvent, il y a des menaces à la fin de ces mails, pour te motiver encore plus, du genre “Attention, si tu ne renvoies pas ce mail, tu auras la malchance et le mauvais œil sur toi / l’amour de ta vie sera écrasé par un bison quai de Javel / Rachida Dati entrera au gouvernement / le fantôme d’un enfant viendra craquer tous les élastiques des slips sur ton séchoir / tes amis te quitteront tous“, mais il ne faut pas quand même trop y croire. Enfin c’est ridicule, crois-tu vraiment que quelqu’un pourrait par exemple faire rentrer Rachida Dati dans un gouvernement ? Caroline, sois raisonnable !

Dernièrement, j’ai d’ailleurs reçu d’une lectrice et néanmoins amie, qui voulait me montrer l’absurdité de ces courriers, un formidable  exemple dénonçant les vaccinations contre la grippe A ; il commençait ainsi :

Je vous passe la mise en forme et les couleurs ; retenons déjà toute la beauté de la chose : la personne nous fait circuler un papier par internet (c’est déjà très fort, demain, il essaie avec du carton), et commence son propos par “Bonjour à tous“, suivi d’un tutoiement. “Bonjour à tous, tu vas bien ?” ; mais retenons surtout le bel appui sur 8 lignes comme quoi c’est super important. J’imagine le mec à “Qui veut gagner des Millions ?“

Oui, la composition, le renvoi et l’utilisation générale de ce genre de mails est en réalité un véritable handicap, trop peu reconnu en nos contrées. L’auteur du mail dont je vous parle en tout cas expliquait que le vaccin contre la grippe A était en réalité un vaste complot mondial auquel participait “Monsieur Sarkosy” (notez que les gens qui se plaignent le plus de voir son nom partout sont souvent aussi ceux qui l’écrivent le moins bien. Comme quoi, ça ne doit pas encore être assez. Coucou le Parti Communiste.) Par ailleurs, ce complot serait en fait un “génocide” (rien que ça) dans lequel les “élites” vont vacciner d’abord de gré par la manipulation, puis de force, toute la population. Comme en Grèce ou en Suisse, par exemple, où ça a déjà commencé (il ne manquait que la musique de fond à ce mail) ; il est vrai qu’on imagine bien le complot mondial des Chefs d’Etat qui ont décidé de se débarasser de toute la population mondiale, d’un coup, hop, histoire de rester entre gens fréquentables. Excellent plan.

Alors, effectivement, quand on lit des choses pareilles, on pense sérieusement à abattre les auteurs. Mais ce ne sont pas eux, le vrai problème. Le vrai problème, ce sont les gens comme Caroline, qui n’ont pas fini de transformer notre boîte mail en paniette à pipeaux. Pour ceux-là, deux solutions : soit réussir à leur indiquer qu’ils peuvent s’orienter sur un site tel que www.hoaxbuster.com , pour distinguer le vrai du faux (puisque dans 0,2% des cas, il y en a quand même ; oui, j’indique le site, je suis bon), soit leur renvoyer une chaîne vantant les mérites de l’euthanasie face au handicap mental lourd.

A vous de voir. Moi j’ai déjà choisi.

Ambdós temes es quan un pot sentir-se orgullós de tenir a Catalunya una organització com la UGT que sap anticipar-se i detectar allò necessari en cada moment i situació Geogràfica y així ho manifesta sempre que pot reivindicant allò que toca en cada moment, fins que la coherencia o la urgent necessitat fa que la societat, politics o empreses hagin d’actuar de forma urgent.

Un exemple d’aquesta anticipació en aquest casos concrets sería la propera obertura de la Seu UGT de Catalunya a la rambla del raval i en el cas de Lleida essent els primers en utilitzar aquest recinte el 2 de desembre amb el Congrés de la Federació de Transports.

Amb el premi a la UGT per creativitat i innovació atorgat pels periodistes per la campanya hazteelsueco.org on la UGT va alertar dels perills de la nova directiva europea de les 65 hores que vam iniciar i podem dir que vam estar colaboradors indispensables per que els europarlamentaris oblidesin la idea de aprobar l’esmentada directiva cada dia els mebres de la UGT ens hem de sentir més orgullosos de pertantyer a aquesta organització que te ja mes de 120 anys d’historia a aquest país.

We have set the fund up for this young man.  Charter One Bank on  Parsons Avenue, inside the Kroger store.  The fund is called “The Justin Bailey Fund”.  All money goes directly to the family for the care and needs of Justin.  Young Mr. Bailey has made it home from the hospital and has a feeding tube and a trachea at least for the next 2 months.  His mother, Teareen has had to take off from work for those 2 months to care for her son.  Justin’s father is now in the hospital and they are unsure when he will be released.

She has no idea her time has run out, but tomorrow DCAC staff will be forced to put down one of their friends for lack of space. Please, please someone reward her for being such a good girl, for PATIENTLY waiting her turn -

‘love on a leash’ should not have this hard of a time finding a new home.  But here we are….

She will not have another chance – tomorrow is Euth.

Obama Administration Intends to Purge Republicans From the Civil Service

Remember how the Democrats reacted when the Bush Administration started replacing U.S. Attorneys? At least they were actually political appointees employed at the will and whim of the President.

Via Instapundit comes word that the federal government’s Office of Personnel Management (OPM) intends to purge the federal government of Republican civil servants all in the name of purify the federal bureaucracy.

It is a typical Washington process that many political appointees are able to take jobs within the civil service once their political appointment expires — usually at the conclusion of one administration. What often happens as well is Congressional staffers, before an election or shortly thereafter, will move over to the Executive Branch placed into the civil service, in effect, by appointment.

So, for example, when George Bush became President in 2001, a number of Clinton political appointees became civil service employees. As a result, they became subject to civil service hiring and firing rules, which meant they could no longer be replaced simply for having been a Democratic appointee.

Barack Obama is changing that. He intends to purge all Republicans from the federal bureaucracy retroactive to five years ago.

The flat complex I live at, namely Waikiki, at The Islands, in Parow, Cape Town, has removed the keypad that opens the gate on entry of a code number. They say it represents a security risk.

They have also disabled the remote I paid R100 for, as they say too many exist and that is a security risk.

The only means of getting the gate to open now is to call a cellphone number using only my cellphone, as the number to call is linked to my cellphone number.

I ride a motorbike.

I have a 3G PDA style cellphone, on which I conduct my life. I have this expensive device as the result of a Vodacom contract, a contract that states that should the phone “suffer liquid damage” it will no longer be covered under their repair scheme.

Liquid damage can only occur if the device is operated when it gets wet.

The expectation is that I stop the motorcycle outside the gate of the complex, retrieve the cellphone from it’s dry pocket, remove my dry gloves, locate the required number in Contacts, dial and wait for the gate to open.

Conditions in Cape Town over the last two days alone make this impossible to achieve.

The cellphone will cease to function if it gets wet. It will no longer be covered under the contract if it has liquid damage, and I cannot see any way to gain access otherwise!

My question is this: does your insurance, Pam Golding or the Body Corporate, cover the replacement of defunct communication devices, facing guaranteed destruction by adherence to your policies?

Should this not be the case, can I safely assume that your policy is therefore to serve notice to all residents who prefer two wheeled transport?

The situation is desperate. This is not a matter that can be referred to the next body corporate meeting. This involves the absolute disruption of my life and needs to be resolved immediately.

not because the sputnik inspired them, but because the russian satellite spurred something on that most countries
felt the need to prove the rest of the world that they are that much better. competition.

our lives our filled with this need to prove ourselves. with this need to let others know that we are better then them or that we have what it takes. if within the conversation of spirituality, there are nuances of competition that find their way into conversations. such as: “what church do you go to?” (sometimes asking what denomination; there is an almost presumption that there are better or worse denominations out there to choose from) or whether you are a christian or not, to name a couple of examples.

the idea of loving one another or the “other” isn’t about whether they have experienced Jesus, as important as that may be, our competitive spirit should never lead us to get to know others. we should get to know people, period. no intentions. no philosophies. being honest and authentic and real. love by nature is a virtue without the need to be urgent or competitive or manipulative.

so, is competition ever good? can it be? yes. if it leads us to become the best us that we have to offer to the world. how do we know the difference? i think a good place to start is to ask what reactions arrive out of the competition we are a part of. if they create anger. it might be time to reassess why you are a part of whatever you are a part of. if competitiveness brings out good traits, then pick wisely what you do, and it might be important to ask why you are doing it as well. this could be a good place to start.

we must be weary when competition draws us from disconnecting with people. the point of humanity is to connect with one another. to participate in the global community. but, we must weary of the natures that evolve out of competition, for the safety of humanity.
