As we add yet another sugar, we might recall that it was on this date in 1307 that Wilhelm Tell, or we Anglos tend to know him, William Tell, shot an apple off his son’s head.

Tell, originally from Bürglen, was a resident of the Canton of Uri (in what is now Switzerland), well known as an expert marksman with the crossbow. At the time, the Habsburg emperors of Austria were seeking to dominate Uri. Hermann Gessler, the newly appointed Austrian Vogt of Altdorf, raised a pole in the village’s central square, hung his hat on top of it, and demanded that all the local townsfolk bow before the hat. When Tell passed by the hat without bowing, he was arrested; his punishment was being forced to shoot an apple off the head of his son, Walter– or else both would be executed. Tell was promised freedom if he succeeded.

As the legend has it, Tell split the fruit with a single bolt from his crossbow. When Gessler queried him about the purpose of a second bolt in his quiver, Tell answered that if he had killed his son, he would have turned the crossbow on Gessler himself. Gessler became enraged at that comment, and had Tell bound and brought to his ship to be taken to his castle at Küssnacht. But when a storm broke on Lake Lucerne, Tell managed to escape. On land, he went to Küssnacht, and when Gessler arrived, Tell shot him with his crossbow.

Tell’s defiance of Gessler sparked a rebellion, in which Tell himself played a major part, leading to the formation of the Swiss Confederation.

Ca de obicei, am fost foarte busy şi n-am apucat să scriu pe blog. Iată că azi mi-am făcut în sfârşit timp şi curaj. Să vă povestesc ce-am făcut zilele astea…

Duminică am stat în casă ca să-mi termin portofoliul la română. Şi ţeapă, nu li le-a luat. Abia joi o să le corecteze. În fine, şi ieri şi azi am lucrat in PowerPoint pentru şcoală.

Iar acum vine partea amuzantă(zic eu). Ieri la germană ne-a dat profa nişte texte iar noi trebuia să completăm spaţiile libere cu pronume. Nimic ciudat. Până am ajuns la un text despre Ursula. Nu mai ţin minte cine era Ursula din text, însă vă pot spune cine e Ursula la care m-am gândit în momentul acela. Când i-am auzit numele, am izbucnit într-un râs şi eu şi Iulia, colega mea de bancă. Chestia e că n-am mai putut să ne oprim(tipic nouă). Într-un final reuşim… până când scrie profa pe tablă Putzfrau(adică femeie de servici în germană). Needless to say că iar am început să râdem.

Şiiiiiiiii ca să ajung din nou la Ursula, vizionaţi video-ul de mai jos iar apoi veţi înţelege de ce am râs.

1600 – MOTOR MOTOR! Zwei Wochen Urlaub in zwei Tagen standen bevor! Mit dem kleinen Flitzer von Wunderbärchen fuhren 2/3 der Gruppe Sonnenschein gen Süden in die Schweiz. Zürich war das erste Ziel. Der Verkehr war kein Problem, bis wir endlich das gewünschte Ziel (Zürich) erreichten und 30 Minuten im Stau standen. Als der Verkehr dann endlich wieder lief, war Wunderbärchen so aufgedreht (die Freude schäumte fast über!), dass es kaum mehr wusste, zwischen welchen Strassenlinien es fahren musste. ”Wo muss ich denn jetzt fahren??? Da sind gelbe Streifen, weisse Streifen??? Wir sind hier doch nicht bei floskel 3!!” Bereits gen Neun erreichten sie das traute Heim und wurden mit einem echte Schweizer Raclette begrüsst. Ein Glas Wein dazu, die Stimmung optimal, um anschliessend in der Stadt weiter zu festen.

Zur späten Stund, als auch das letzte öffentliche Verkehrsmittel nicht mehr fuhr, entschloss sich die Gruppe Sonnenschein spontan für ne Nachtwanderung nach Hause ins Bett. Gute Nacht!

Am nächsten Tag, stand eine Stadtbesichtigung in Zürich an. Kaum unterwegs trafen Sie auf Männergesellschaft und wurden mit einem Kaffee beglückt. Wunderbärchen trank eine Schoggi Mélange-obwohl es sich dann als gewöhliche Suchard Schoggi herausstellte. — Also nix Mélange!

Schliesslich wurde fleissig eingekauft, vorallem der Schoko-Laden machte dem Wunderbärchen schöne Augen. Und nach weiteren Kaffees und einer Sightseeing-Tour durch die Altstadt, machte sich die Gruppe Sonnenschein auf, weiter gen Süden!

Nach einer Fährenfahrt und kurvigen Strassen erreichten Sie das Herz der Schweiz: Uri. Des cinzlelinskis Freund erwartete die Gruppe schon und Wunderbärchen wurde mit einer weiteren Schweizer Leckerei bekannt gemacht: Züri Gschnätzlets! gabs zum Znacht. UND es schmeckte waaaahnsinnig gut. Alle drei waren glücklich und zufrieden.

Am späteren Abig gings nach Altdorf auf die jährliche “Rüümliparty”, zu Musik und Trank wurde gelacht und gefeiert. Wunderbärchen hat auch Bekanntschaft geschlossen mit urigen Volk, doch beim einen oder anderen wusste man nicht so genau, woher der kam…….Wunderbärchen, möchten se kommentieren??

Nach einer weiteren Nachtwanderung und einer Tasse Tee gingen alle müde, aber zufrieden zu Bett.

Die zweite Woche ist bereits angebrochen und nach einem grosszügigen Zmorge wurde dem Wunderbärchen noch Altdorf vorgestellt, die Heimat von Wilhelm Tell. Der Zufall wollte es, dass Kirmes im Dorfe war und so konnte Wunderbärchen sämtliche urner Leckereien probieren. Yummi.

Das Wunderbärchen hatte schliesslich nochmals die Gelegenheit ihr Schweizerdeutsch zum Besten zu geben und fragte im Kaffee: “ich hätt gern e Schoggi Mélange, bitte!” Leider eine weitere Enttäuschung, ein Azubi hatte die Bestellung entgegen genommen und brachte nach 15 Minuten Wartedauer eine halbüberloffene Milch mit Schlagsahne. Die Schokolade, portioniert daneben, musste man auch noch selber anrichten. (Wir hoffen, die Chefin hats nicht gesehen, so kam wenigstens der Azubi davon!)

Die zweite Woche war um. Die Reise gen Norden nach Deutschland (Dütschland! wie jetzt auch Wunderbärchen weiss) wurde in Angriff genommen. Die Koffer gepackt, das Auto startklar, verabschiedete sich 2/3 der Gruppe Sonnenschein von cinzelinskis Freund und die lange Fahrt wurde gestartet.

Um 10 Uhr nachts, war das ferngewordene Mainz wieder ganz nah. Die zwei Wochen Urlaub in zwei Tagen waren endgültig um.

It’s difficult to accept how we have become enslaved by products that do much harm under the guise of convenience. Life seems too hard and we rationalize patronage of such products as a means to cope. Disposable diapers are probably at the top of our “convenient but harmful” list. But after the flood reminded me of how environmentally unfriendly diapers can be, I vowed to get these evil goods out of our lives.

This vow was followed by a frantic search for washable diapers. Don’t get me wrong. I am an advocate of cloth diapers. My children have been fully cloth diapered since the day they came home from the hospital.  But only during daytime. There was a time that I tried using cloth diapers on Uri even at night but Turo was annoyed because Uri would have his clothes and crib sheets soaking wet while he slept. At that time, I thought there was no alternative but to use disposables at night. And since we had two toddlers, imagine how much disposable diapers we consumed in a month, in a year, and in the past two and a half years. I don’t even want to do the math.

I knew I previously saw a washable diaper featured on TV but didn’t give it much thought until now. Luckily, I read about Tushywushy diapers in a parenting forum. I also saw other similar products mostly from other countries and another type that is made locally. I did some background investigation and finally decided to give Tushywushy a try.

I had to place an order in their website (www.next9.org) and got to pick up my order the following week. Reading the contents of their website gave me an impression that they knew their products well. I wasn’t surprised to find out that the company was set up by two young mothers who were looking for alternative products for their children but found none and ended developing some by themselves. That’s basically the selling point for me. LOL

Each diaper has a leakproof outer layer that fits snugly because of the adjustable velcro straps and elastic gussets. Inside it’s made of fleece material that’s supposed to keep the wetness and moisture away from baby’s skin. This is another selling point for me and I was a bit surprised to find out that it really does keep the skin dry even after a couple of wettings. An absorbent insert takes up all of baby’s pee so it essentially functions like a disposable diaper except that it’s completely washable.

Tushywushies come in several solid colors. I ordered the grey one just to be sure the colors won’t stain other clothes in the laundry (they weren’t available in white). The diapers come in three sizes for various age and weight ranges. Each pack contains three diapers at a price of P1,000 per pack. This may sound absurdly expensive at first but if you do the math you’ll realize you’ll never have to spend a single centavo on diapers ever. Go figure exactly how much you can save.

In all, I ordered three packs for Uri to use at night. That’s enough for twice a week laundry. At about the same time I bought the Tushywushies, Ari has mastered peeing before sleeping, after waking up and sometimes waking in the middle of the night when he needs to. And I am damn proud to announce that disposable diapers are officially off our grocery list.

These will be the hardest mornings to track- not because I’m not awake or that there aren’t health issues to discuss, but because I feel terrible and would really rather think about anything else. Unfortunately, despite feeling somewhat better yesterday I was up half the night coughing, and I’m having an unpleasant reaction to the antibiotics. I’m not particularly tired, but also not fit for public, so I will stay home from work today. I had planned on writing something amusing about how my body seemed to be taking turns between being sick and joint pain, but I had what can only be called a “creeping flare” build up yesterday afternoon that made my evening unpleasant. I’m still struggling with how to talk about these issues, although e-mailing back and forth with my sister is helping a lot. I also heard from my best friend for the first time in months yesterday (we have both been busy with no real news) and I realized that she had not heard of the RA diagnosis yet, so I had to break that to her. She’s confused about how I can be so young and develop arthritis- I really didn’t know what else to say other than “it happens”.

I must say, having a purring cat curl up with me made the wee hours of the morning much more pleasant- cats are great medicine.

That would be a total income of: £19,700 from an average of just two sales at just £197 each per week (allowing for two no sale weeks)

 Consider that each 21 disc set requires 20 blank DVD-R discs and 1 blank CD-Rom disc to produce and that’s a total of 2,000 blank DVD-ROMs and 100 CD-ROMs required to manufacture and fulfill the orders. 

Using a site such as www.dvdshoponline.co.uk  (for this example – there are actually even cheaper sources) the DVD’s (which enable you to print direct onto the disc) would cost you £30 per 100 discs so for 2,000 DVD’S that’s a total of £600. 

Then you’d pay £10 for each 100 printable blank CD-ROM’s thus meaning that so far its cost you £610 to manufacture 100 sets of the entire package! 

Next you will need Two Ten Way DVD cases for each set and also one single DVD case for each set, a total of 200 ten way (£25 for 50 at example site shown) and 100 single DVD cases (£10 for 100 on example site) being required. 

That’s a total cost for cases for 100 sets of the package of: £110 thus bringing our running total so far to £720. 

Next each case will need a nice colour cover printing with each set needing three covers (as there are two ten way cases and a one single case) so that’s a total of 300 sheets of photo quality paper required and as 50 sheets costs £3-00 that’s a total of £18 for paper. 

Then there is ink which when you buy your ink cartridges cheap (via ebay etc) should cost you no more than the equivalent of 10p for each cover and lets say 5p max for each full colour DVD face which you print. So with 3 covers for each set and 21 discs that’s an ink cost for each set of £1-35 and a total cost of £135 to manufacture 100 sets. 

Finally you will need 100 large Padded jiffy envelopes to use sending the packages out to your customers which bought cheaply on net will cost you around 50p each so that’s a total of £50 to send out the 100 sets. 

And finally First Class or Airmail Postage to send out each package will need to be paid for so let’s say an average of £10 per set which is £1,000 to send out the example 100 sets being discussed here. In truth to send to UK they will be little more than £5 each first class but the rest allows for International postage costs. 

Add together the total of everything stated above and it comes to a figure of:£1923.

That means that each set to manufacture and send out to your customer costs you in this example £19-23p and even in this example where we are imagining you are only retailing them at £197 a set it gives you a total profit from each sale of: OVER – £177 

So with even only 100 sales in a year (average of 2 per week for 50 weeks) and even if you were only selling them at the bare minimum retail price allowed of £197 you’d still make by selling just 100 sets a profit of: £17,777 

Assuming that you have made the intelligent decision to make your one time payment to secure your Personal Limited Edition Platinum Master Resale Legal License to this set in full and as such will be paying just £1297.00, then even after getting back your original investment in this “Worst Case Scenario Example” you stand to make a BIG PROFIT OF – £16,480. 

And as this is a “worst case scenario” lets say you decide to buy a DVD duplicator which can burn Ten copies of each disc from your master each time without the need to use your computer. Well these can be bought online for less than £400 and will save you many hours of work.

Even after investing into these two pieces of equipment you’d still in this “worst case scenario” have made a PROFIT OF – £ 15,880 and of course you’d still have all of the equipment which you can continue to use for years to come without any need for additional investment.

IDEA 1 (with Mr. Tweed): Providing URLs for Periods of Time

This is such a simple idea it is easy to miss the brilliance it is suggesting. Quite simply it comes down to when anyone talks about periods of time, be that an academic, a journalist or a school child.  For example, the Victorian Era, the Vietnam War or the Jurassic period.  All of these humans understand more or less (or at least we pretend to know) when these things actually were, when in fact knowing periods of time is often more art than science.  And yet scholarls, journalists and people define their existence, age, identity and understanding of history on given periods of time.

Solution: Go to a BBC web page and type in the time you are looking for, e.g. “the renaissance period”, BBC will return you a link eg http://www.bbc.uk/RenaissancePeriod which you can now take and embed into the body of your essay: as a footnote in your dissertation, as a link in your news report or at the top of your school paper as a keyword.  By placing this one simple link in your paper the world over can now search and discover content written on historical periods.  Better yet the BBC can start to crawl these artefacts to help better define what the time period means, i.e. at http://www.bbc.uk/ReanssancePeriod/rdf there will be lists and lists of categorised key word terms along with mathematical equations that suggest exactly when the period was considered to begin and end.  You combine these keywords and dates and suddenly you can begin doing general searches across all legacy research to suggest what time period they were talking about.

Note on Idea 1: In a way what is amazing about the above idea is that it has not been done yet, [see below] Wikipedia does not provide an authoritative source for exact time periods, but rather allows a debate on time which is good for humans but is extremely inefficient for exactness that time requires.

Post Script: Apparently it has been done (to a certain degree) by none other than Mr. Gutteridge, my notable and esteemed colleague down at Southampton: http://commoneras.ecs.soton.ac.uk/ <- Now we just need to have the URI be rdfa in xhtml or json with some logic behind the time based numbers. That and a little push by someone big enough to get end users to start using it!

Luv Messenger was founded in 2007 by Supah Lion and Don Rolando after many years of good work and experience in their individual trajectory; Supah Lion as a Member of Roots&Vibes and Rolando with Soundsgood Intl. from Austria.

# Can you describe which style your sound plays mostly?
As lovers of all eras of jamaican reggae, our selection is suitable for all audience that enjoys good music, no matter if oldies, digital, new roots, the latest dancehall smashers or all-time favorites out of any music genre. Vibrating energetic sessions and the contact to the massive make Luv Messenger shows nights to remember.

# Please tell me about the most important cornermarks in the sounds history, like clashes, the baddest dances, etc.
This year we had a couple of crazy dances outside, like Fiestas de Gracia in Mozart Street, as well as the San Juan Celebrations at the Beach are always a highlight during the summer season in Barcelona.

# Which plans do you have for your sound in the near future and what are the real longtime plans for it?
Barcelona might be well known all over the world for many things like tourism and football, but the reggae scene is still underdeveloped. That’s why we are still looking forward to have our own regular dance to be able to promote reggae dancehall the in our way.

# Which persons, sounds, artists have influenced you musicallywise?
hehe.. too many to mention… sound: Stone Love, Label: Motown, Artists: all of them.

# What was the first dubplate you ever voiced, and do you still play it?
Luv Messenger has voiced a handfull of Dubs and likes to play Reggie Stepper’s “yes indeed” once in a while, but generally we are a sound that does not rely on dubplates to perform.

Aprender a usar sistemas gerenciadores de banco de dados não é uma coisa tão difícil. De longe parece um bicho de sete cabeças, mas depois que você olha mais de perto percebe que na verdade ele é só um bicho de sete tabelas. Você vai colocando um campo aqui, um outro ali, cria meia dúzia de chaves primárias, uma dúzia de chaves estrangeiras e está pronta a estrutura básica do seu banco.

Por mais increça que parível, uma das etapas mais simples é a que me deixa com mais dúvidas: definir o tamanho dos campos. Assim como quando se está programando em uma linguagem qualquer, cada tipo de variável tem um tamanho máximo e você pode especificar que quer usar um tamanho menor e assim reduzir o desperdício de memória no seu programa.

O tipo varchar, que ilustra o título deste artigo, armazena 65536 (2^16) bytes de caracteres, o que para armazenar o nome de uma pessoa é muito, ao passo que quando estamos falando de textos extensos esse limite pode ser facilmente superado. Um link de blog, por exemplo, possui em média uns 100 caracteres. Resolvido, varchar de 100, certo? Nada! Há relatos de URL’s com 2063 caracteres. Este site “encompridor” de URL’s gera links com mais de 3600 caracteres, e o pior, que funcionam em quase todos os browsers! Só não funcionam no Internet Explorer, que tem uma limitação de 2083 caracteres para URL’s.

O fato é que quando padronizaram o URI e o URL esqueceram de definir um tamanho máximo para essas strings. E aí? Como nós, desenvolvedores, ficamos? Que tamanho eu coloco no varchar? Se eu colocar um tamanho razoável eu corro o risco de perder informações, se eu colocar o tamanho máximo eu desperdiço espaço e aumentam os custos com hospedagem, sem falar na questão do desempenho.

Por não saber o que fazer, fui olhar o que o WordPress fez, afinal milhares de blogueiros ao redor do mundo que tiram seu sustento dessa plataforma devem ter algum motivo para usá-la. Das duas uma: ou esses blogueiros não entendem nada de banco de dados ou eu estou deixando de considerar alguma informação importante, porque quando vi os campos das tabelas tomei um susto: o título dos posts do WordPress é do tipo text, o equivalente a (imagine) 65536 bytes, na pior das hipóteses 65536 caracteres!

O campo do conteúdo do post então é outro absurdo: longtext, traduzindo, 4MB, mais de 4 milhões de caracteres! Isso é 405.000 vezes maior do que o review enorme que o Keaton fez sobre sua multifuncional! Ao que parece o banco do Drupal deve ser mais enxuto, pois no começo de 2008 alguns usuários relataram problemas ao assinar feeds com URL’s maiores que 255 caracteres.

Recebi sugestões de usar varchar de 3000 caracteres, e até cogitei a solução que deram no caso do Drupal: usar a API do TinyURL para os links mais insanos, fazendo isso de forma transparente para o usuário. Mas aí entra outra questão: depender de um serviço como o TinyURL não diminuiria a confiabilidade da minha aplicação? Vale a pena criar um encurtador de URL’s próprio? Será que o MySQL possui algum tipo de compactação para os tipos text e longtext? Qual a sua opinião sobre o assunto? Qual a resposta para a vida, o universo e tudo mais? O que o Mr. Pink fez com a maleta?

UPDATE: o var de varchar simboliza que este tipo tem tamanho variável. Enquanto char(10) ocupa exatamente 10 bytes, um varchar(10) ocupa a quantidade de caracteres usados mais 1 byte pra gravar essa quantidade. No entanto, o tamanho máximo de um índice no MySQL é +/- 760 bytes, logo é impossível usar um varchar(3000) como chave, seja primária, única, estrangeira, o escambau.

Já os tipos text seguem a mesma filosofia do varchar de só ocupar quanto espaço for necessário, mas esses tipos ficam gravados meio que fora do registro, em um local separado, e o que vai na tabela é uma referência para esse local. Quanto maior o text (longtext) maior o tamanho máximo da string e o gasto em bytes na tabela pra fazer essa referência. Se você escolher usar um text o tamanho máximo da string será o do tipo escolhido (tinytext -> 128, smalltext -> 65536, veja mais aqui) e o tamanho em disco será a referência na tabela (coisa de 2 bytes, por registro) mais o espaço utilizado pela string.

Aí alguém pergunta: “porque não usar sempre text ao invés de varchar?”. Simples. O tipo text não aceita valores default nem pode ser utilizado como chave, a menos que você diga quantos bytes quer pegar do começo da string para usar como chave, respeitando sempre os 760 bytes de limite na chave do índice. Uma curiosidade sobre o text é que a única diferença entre ele e o tipo blob (strings com conteúdo binário, arquivos) é que o blob é case sensitive nas comparações ao contrário do text.

On the web I reckon there’s only metadata and URIs or perhaps there’s no metadata and only data. Either way the metadata, data/content distinction isn’t helpful.

Linked Data allows you to bind HTTP URIs to an object and to information about that object. This is useful because it’s more useful to talk about real world things — things like people, places and events — the things that people think about. Despite this I have numerous conversations, and have done for years, about what ‘metadata’ to use to describe a document. Typically what this really means is: “what keywords to use so that some technomagical solution can use that ‘metadata’ to personalise/ recommend content”.

Beyond the obvious — keywords on their own are never going to achieve the sorts of solutions non-technical people imagine — it also forces an unhelpful schism. It makes people think about their content and your metadata, or that metadata is somehow outwith the content they are creating. The trouble is that one persons data is another persons metadata. Is the title of a story metadata or content? Is a news story content or metadata about a real world event? The answer depends on your perspective.

It seems to be that a more useful way to think about things is to have URIs to identify things and then have information/documents/data/metadata/whatever that make assertions about those things. Sometimes those bits of information will be simple data points, for example, for an album release they might include information/metadata about who performed or wrote the piece (obviously linking to URIs to identify the person who did perform or write it, with appropriate predicates) while other bits of metadata might be more verbose: reviews of the album or the lyrics etc. and then again some might be media things (recordings of the album etc.).

And of course because we’re talking about a graph of data, those documents making assertions about a thing can in turn also have metadata/data/documents which make assertions about them, for example, who wrote it, comments about it etc.

Imagine what might happen if a news website took this approach? You would mint a URI for the event (or reuse one that already existed) and then write news stories about it, each with their own URL, each making assertions about that event. It would create a news service which was truly native to the Web, rather than a facsimile of the printed press. Imagine then what it would be like if we could link-up all the news stories on the web which also made assertions about that event. As a user of such a site/ set of sites I could find everything about a given thing (a person, event or place).

Of course, as Dan Brickley, put it:

concepts and events are still social and technological artefacts, but they are designed to help interconnect descriptions of butterflies, documents (and data) about butterflies, and people with interest or expertise relating to butterflies.

In other words what matters is a way of identifying things, a way of interconnecting them and a way of describing them — subdividing those ways of describing them into ‘data’ and ‘metadata’ is unhelpful, or at the very least adds nothing useful.

It is however useful to separate our concept of something from our conception of it. As Stephen Pinkers puts it:

…if you look up William Shakespeare in a dictionary it says “English playwright, lived in the 17th century, wrote Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet, etc.” Is that what the name William Shakespeare means, and is that what the concept William Shakespeare is? That sounds plausible, but it turns out not to be true. If we were to learn that William Shakespeare didn’t write any of the plays attributed to him — let’s say that we learned he didn’t even live in Stratford, that there was a clerical error and he really lived in Warwick. He would still be William Shakespeare, and we wouldn’t posthumously dub the real author of Shakespeare’s plays William Shakespeare. We would just say we were mistaken about what we believed about William Shakespeare.

So what is the concept of William Shakespeare, the meaning of the word William Shakespeare? Basically, when Mr. and Mrs. Shakespeare christened their son William, and the name stuck, and then everyone who knew him, and then who knew someone else, who knew someone else, and passed it down to us — that unbroken chain of transmission of the name from the moment of first dubbing is what gives William Shakespeare its meaning. There’s a sense in which to have a concept necessarily means to be connected to the world through this chain of transmission of a name going back to the moment of first dubbing.

So while I don’t think it’s helpful to separate data from metadata it is helpful separate concept from conception.

A URI – Universidade regional integrada, de Frederico Westphalen, iniciou nesta sexta-feira o 1º Encontro Nacional do Conhecimento: Saberes e vivência. O encontro, que vai até a próxima sexta-feira e está sendo realizado no salão de atos da universidade, tem como pauta a qualidade de ensino através de novos paradigmas, em debates que refletem a realidade educativa e a valorização do ensino e de seus profissionais.

A palestra de abertura foi na noite de sexta, com o professor Dr. Roque Strieder, da UNOESC, que falou a respeito dos desafios epistemológicos e de educabilidade no ser humano diante do compromisso com a ciência. O palestrante abordou também temas como a relevância do processo de formação, compreensão e construção das alternativas às problemáticas atuais.

Last Friday, the day before the UConn football team played the University of Rhode Island at Rentschler Field, a press release was issued advising of increased security, including pat-down procedures, in light of recent terrorist threats.  Fans entering the gates of Rentschler Field received a white card with additional details on the security measures:

UConn and Rentschler Field, as indicated by the last paragraph of the card it handed out to fans passing throught the stadium gates, attempts to create a waiver of any claims a ticket-holder may possess once that ticket-holder enters the stadium.  Such a waiver reflects an issue that has been discussed on Connecticut Sports Law – the rights of ticket holders with respect to sporting events.  Those rights, of course, are limited to say the least:

In legal terms, a ticket to a sporting event constitutes a revocable license.  A revocable license provides the license holder with a limited bundle of rights – such as the right to attend the game, sit in the assigned seat and use the stadium facilities made available to the public.  These rights can essentially be revoked by the team at any time and for any reason – especially if a fan violates the team’s prescribed rules of conduct.

When it comes to stadium pat-downs, however, fans have argued their right to privacy trumps a stadium’s need for security.  A lawsuit, brought under the California state constitution in connection with pat-downs at San Francisco 49ers games is currently pending; and a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan’s claim, made under the U.S. Constitution, was ultimately rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court. 

Although the boundaries of a fan’s right to privacy when entering a stadium may be uncertain, the basic legal rights of a ticket-holder are clear: the team holds all of the cards.  Just read the fine print.
