Komputer-komputer tua yang masih berfungsi komponen-komponen hardwarenya tak perlu masuk ke gudang atau tempat pembuangan. Dengan adanya Sugar on a Stick, mesin-mesin tersebut bisa seolah memiliki nyawa baru dan penampilan baru.

Sugar merupakan sistem operasi open source yang sebelumnya didesian untuk komputer sejuta umat dalam program OLPC (one laptop per child). Spesifikasinya sangat sederhana dan tidak boros sumber daya.

Pengembangnya, Sugar Labs telah merekayasa agar software tersebut dapat berjalan di komputer desktop tanpa harus melakukan instalasi. caranya dengan memasukkannya ke dalam sebuah batang USB dan dapat dijalankan langsung saat komputer melakukan booting atau dihidupkan.

"Sugar om a Stick memberikan kesempatan napas kehidupan baru bagi mesin-mesin tua," ujar Walter Bender, pendiri Sugar Labs seperti dilansir BBC. Software yang dirancang untuk anak-anak ini dipamerkan dalam konferensi LinuxTag di Berlin, Jerman baru-baru ini.

Kelebihan dari software ini adalah kelengkapan aplikasi tambahannya. Selain mendapat tampilan baru dan kinerja sesuai kapasitas mesin tua, penggunananya terutama anaka-anak yang menjadi saaran dapat mengakses berbagai paket dan layanan software edukasi.

Versi terbaru Sugar on a stick dapat digunakan dengan USB flash sebesar 1 GB. Di dalamnya sudah termasuk 40 program, termasuk program untuk mengetik, menggambar, dan games. Software ini bisa jalan di jenis komputer apapun baik yang berbasis Linux, Macs, maupun Windows.

Sugar sebelumnya dibuat sebagai satu-satunya platform yang berjalan di XO Machine, laptop seharga 100 dollar untuk program OLPC. Namun, pendirinya menyatrakan mundur setelah Nicholas Negroponte yang merupakan pendiri program OLPC memutuskan untuk membuka kerja sama dengan Microsoft agar Windows juga bisa dijalankan di XO Machine. This whole post will be redone, but information was to good for not sharing it ASAP.

SuperMemo security has always been a issue to me, our databases are just not secure enough, of course many info should be available, public information must. But security must not come at the cost of turning some program snail pace. I’ve been using a RAM drive, yeap! the old way, RAM is so fast, that no HDD can beat, yesterday I got a great advice trough twitter (author to disclose after permission): “Put the locker on a TrueCrypt Folder!”, It felt almost as I was been shout, for how dumb I was. Until when would RAM be robbed by the SM collection?.

I’ve try my way also, I never take anything as the best. I’ve tried many other compression software, many commercial and some freeware. Nothing beats TrueCrypt . Faster, and cheaper, albeit not fancier. (Symplicity rules before design)

So? Make a Folder on TrueCrypt, procedure is simple. Just use a folder. Other options are great to, but for SuperMemo, just use a Folder.

Put your whole collection there, and if you wish also the backup. I preffer saving the backup else where. 7zipping it is much faster to. Make a batch file for faster loading, and make a quick start link.

You should note a big difference in speed when using it. Unless your are using a slow computer (meaning specifically: the processor). For slow computers, is better to use the collection directly in the hard disk (as encrypt does take some processing power). At least no one has shouted “your wrong about this”.

I’ve have not tested a backup of the whole collection until now, as 7ziping is preffered at the moment, but I’ll will and update how it goes.

Note: Copy of the TrueCrypt Folder to any USB is MUCH faster then any incremental backup or synchronizing the files into a USB flash memory.

I’ll redo this post, if time lets me. For now future is really uncertain. Will I pass that exam after all… Will I get a spot for the residency… Well if I don’t I’ll have plenty time to update this blog. Hey, everything has a bright side, doesn’t it.

Вступление: Реанимация

Все началось с того, что у меня в ноуте умер двд-привод. Умер он, гад, в самый “подходящий” момент. Т.е. в процессе переустановки Мандривы. Систему надо было поднять быстро. Купить новый к моему ноуту в разумные сроки не представлялось возможным, т.к. в наличии нигде его не было, только в сервис-центре под заказ. Покупать внешний привод ради одного раза как-то не хотелось. Радовало только одно. Второй системой на ноуте стояла Виста. Груб запускался, но выдавал только свою консоль.  Немного шаманства и опроса товарищей с линухом, выяснил, что же надо сказать, чтоб он меня пустил в винду:

chainloader +1
boot

hd0,1 – устройство и раздел, где стояла винда. 0 – устройство, 1 – раздел

Уже из винды я смог найти в инете, как же мне все-таки поставить линух без привода, но с рабочей системой.

Мандриву-то я поставил, но вот озаботился вопросом, а что будет, если все упадет так, что никакой системы на машине не окажется. Ответ был очевиден. Надо делать инсталяху на  usb-девайсе. Сначала хотел сделать загрузочным свой usb-винт, но отказался от этого, т.к. пришлось бы его форматить, а данные с него скинуть было некуда.  Поэтому выбор пал на флэшку.

Собсно, сабж:
Создание загрузочной usb-flash с установочным образом Mandriva Linux 2009.

За основу взята данная  статья:  http://xgu.ru/wiki/Bootable_USB_Linux . Оригинальная статья, описывает процесс создания загрузочного диска с  Дебианаом.

У нас цели немножко другие.  Мы  создаем не флэшку с системой, а флэшку с инсталяхой системы.

1. Втыкаем флэшку.  Определяем,  каким же девайсом она стала.  В моем случае это /dev/sdb

2. Далее в консоли:  fdisk -l /dev/sdb (Внимание! Никаких цифр в конце! Не sdb1 или sdb2, а просто sdb)

Если в ответ получили что-то типа:

125 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1024 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 7750 * 512 = 3968000 bytes

Значит нам понадобится сначала снести партишн. Если в ответ было:

Disk /dev/sdb: 4063 MB, 4063232000 bytes
125 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1024 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 7750 * 512 = 3968000 bytes
Disk identifier: 0×4819cc5b

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System

Значит флэшка чиста и ничего сносить не надо.

3.  Приступаем к подготовке партишна. В консоли:  fdisk  /dev/sdb

После исполнения можно нажать m . Фдиск тогда выведет список команд. Дабы было понятно, что мы тут делаем.

Если по результатам  п.2 нам надо снести партишн, то нажимаем d . Выбираем номер сносимого партишна в моем случае он был один, по-этому 1.

Теперь наша флэшка девственно чиста.

Нажимаем n тем самым мы создаем партишн. На вопросы отвечаем: сначала p, потом 1, потом давим “энтеры”,  дабы выбрать настройки по дефолту.

Затем нажимаем a, чтоб дать флэшке  возможность стать загрузочной. На вопрос – ответить 1.  Т.е. выбрать первый раздел на флэшке. В нашем случае он единственный.

Потом нажимаем w, это сохранит комманда сохранит все изменения и закроет фдиск.

В консоли еще раз fdisk -l /dev/sdb, чтоб проверить результат.

Если все сделано верно, то должно появится что-то типа такого:

Внимание на последнюю строчку. Обязательно должна быть * после устройства (/dev/sdb1). Если ее нет, значит вы пропустили команду a в фдиске. Без этого ничего не получится. Можете опять запустить фдиск нажать a, выбрать 1, затем нажать w.

4. Создаем файловую систему. Флэшка должна быть размонтирована.

В консоли: mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb1 (А вот здесь указываем конкретный раздел, т.е. с цифирькой на конце – sdb1)

5. Настройка загрузчика GRUB

Данный пункт только вкратце повторяет одноименной пункт из оригинальной статьи, ссылка на которую дана в самом начале.  Если нужны подробности как именно надо монтировать и куда – см. оригинальную статью.  Здесь лишь вкратце упомяну команды и отличия данного процесса от оригинальной статьи.

Надо примонтировать флэшку. Создать на ней каталог /boot/grub

В нем файлик device.map в котором  прописать вот такую строчку: (hd1) /dev/sdb , где hd1 и sdb – девайс, которым является ваша флэшка в данный момент.

Файлик можно создать по быстрому командой из консоли:  echo ‘(hd1) /dev/sdb’ > /media/disk/boot/grub/device.map  , где /media/disk – каталог, куда вы смотировали флэшку.

Далее на флэшку в каталог /boot надо скопировать файлики all.rdz и vmlinuz

Откуда их взять? С .iso образа инсталяхи Мандривы. Есть три варианта, как это сделать.

Первый.  Если у вас есть dvd с отписанным образом инсталяхи Мандривы, тогда файлы можно взять с него. Лежат они в каталоге /i586/isolinux/alt0 .

Второй. Смонтировать образ. к примеру так: mount Mandriva-2009-Free-i586-DVD.iso /mnt/iso Тогда нужные файлики будут в каталоге /mnt/iso/i586/isolinux/alt0, где /mnt/iso – каталог в который вы монтировали образ.

Третий.  Если вы пользуетесь замечательным файловым менеджером Krusader, то в нем вы можете открыть .iso просто кликнув на файлике. Нужные файлы лежат в каталоге /ISO9660/i586/isolinux/alt0/

После всего этого инсталим GRUB.

В консоли: grub-install –root-directory=/media/disk –no-floppy ‘(hd1)’ , где /media/disk – каталог, куда смонтирована флэшка. hd1 – устройство, которым является флэшка в данный момент.
На флэшке в каталоге /boot/grub создаем файлик menu.lst в который прописываем следующие строчки:

timeout 5
title USB Disk Boot
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=791
initrd  /boot/all.rdz

По поводу параметра vga=791. По сути это параметры вашего дисплея. Если выставлено неверно, инсталяха не запустит GUI и ставить вам систему в текстовом режиме.

Вот какие варианты удалось нарыть в инете:
785 – 80×30 text, 640×480 GUI
788 – 100×37 text, 800×600 GUI
791 – 130×48 text, 1024×768 GUI
794 – 158×64 text, 1280×1024 GUI

В данном случае, лучше меньше, чем больше. У меня у ноута дисплей 1280х800, Соответственно, максимально, что я могу выбрать это 791, т.к. для 794 не прохожу по высоте.  Параметров существует гораздо больше, так что если есть желание – можете поискать в инете, но, в принципе, этих должно хватить.

6. Инсталим Линух!!!

Итак, флэшка у нас теперь вполне загрузочная. Далее нам надо разместить на флэшке .iso  Мандривы. Если флешка на 8 Гигов и более, то тут проблем нет. В корень записываем исоху и переименовываем ее в linux.iso . Зачем переименовывать? Да все просто. В начале инсталляции нам придется вручную вбить путь и имя исохи, соответственно, чем проще оно будет, тем меньше вероятность ошибки.

Ну я если у нас флешка маленькая?  Не беда. Исоху можно записать на любую другую флэшку, на которую она влезет, или на usb-hdd, или на тот раздел на финте компа, который не собираетесь удалять  в процессе инсталляции.  У меня исоха отписана на  usb-hdd. Преред инсталляцией воткните оба носителя (загрузочную флэшку и устройство на которое отписана исоха) в комп.

Перегружаемся. В биосе не забываем поставить загрузку с флэшки. Если все сделано верно, то запустится инсталяха. Не пугаемся текстового режима. ГУЙ появится чуть позже. На вопрос, откуда ставить систему – выбираем HDD.  Затем вы увидите перд собой все разделы всех устройств подключенных к компу в данный момент.  Выберите тот, на котором лежит образ.  Далее вас попросят ввести полный путь к исохе. Пишем /linux.iso.  Конечно, если вы переименовали исоху и положили в корень, в противном случае вбиваете полный путь и имя файла с соблюдением регистра!  Ну и если вы ничего не напутали с параметрами vga, то должна появится графическая оболочка.

My Kingston Card reader/ memory stick, i.e. flash drive combination is a wonderful small invention perfect for traveling and it was cheap as well. Maybe too cheap? Recently one of my SD cards gives me a problem. When I stick it in my windows XP running Asus computer says “write protected”. “Turn write protection off or use another card”. Thank you. That means throw the shit, I thought.

I checked many blogs and found some that had to do with a malfunctioning memory stick/ flash drive/ reader. However, I had that problem before, but my memory stick on the reader worked just fine.

The solution is really simple: just tape some scotch or similar tape over the SD card’s write protection slot. The reader then “thinks” the SD card has no write protection funtionality and indeed does everything you want with it.

In case you have the former mentioned problem with the memory stick (flash) itself. This is a great example of things I hate about Microsoft. On their page you will find a passage that says something like: stay the hell away from the registry, since you may fuck things up, but then again, sometimes windows itself is so fucked up that you have no frickin’ choice than to mess around with the intestines of the crappy OS we have provided you with and pray to your gods for the best…

They express a bit differently, but mean just that [1].

So, in case the problem you have is that your USB flash drive says it were “writeprotected” even though you are sure you never messed with it, then try the following [2], while being cautious –> Backup is the miracle solution! [3]:

Open the command line editor of windows XP (in my case, and in that case hopefully your, if I am to help you). You find that under “Start”, the choose “Run”. There you enter “regedit”. This starts a little program that allows you to operate within the holiest of sites of windows, the registry. Here all kind of actions and behaviors of the system are set.

Go to the path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\
CurrentControlSet\Control \StorageDevicePolicies

This is simply a folder within a folder and so on… The final folder, the one you are looking for is called StorageDevicePolicies, and as the name suggests contains the settings for how the storage devices (USB flash) should behave.

Here you right click on: “WriteProtect” and select “modify”. Here you set the value that appears to “0″. Press enter and that’s it. (In other words: Default value: DWORD=0)

Possible values are:
0 – Disabled
1 – Enabled

Yours was set to “1″ I guess which protected it from being written on.

Now, things like this and a million other small things made me try Apple’s OS Leopard (back then actually tiger), or OS X (say: OS ten, but no one dies if you say as some, me included: OS “eks” ).

To put it simple: I won’t go back for the moment. It is not screw ups alone that make me say that. Screw ups happen with every human made system (less so with OSX, for real!), but really it is the handling. Small things that just make no sense, like for instance: if I have a long list of alphabetically ordered folders in windows xp explorer and I jump from, let’s say some folder under “K” to the subfolders. I then realize that I was wrong, and jump back. I arrive at the folders starting with the letter “A” and have to scroll down. WHY, windows???

Anyhow, maybe I am not getting it, but with OSX I am not asked to get anything. It will just jump back to where I came from, since that in 99% of the cases is where I wanted to go back to.

I know it is a minor example and probably it will not make sense to you why that is so important unless you have been using OSX for some months. But then it makes a hell lot of sense…

That is why I hate Apple. Why would they program a system that runs only on Apple machines? Now I am stuck again with this buggy WinXP that I thought to have left behind me, because I work on this Asus while I travel. Why APPLE, WHYYYYYY????

Ovaj tekst se odnosi na NAND čipove, odnosno one memorije koje skladište podatke u skoro svim vrstama memorijskih kartica, USB flash diskova kao i većini drugih digitalnih uređaja.

Tehnologija koja pokreće sve ove uređaje je sa hardverske strane jednostavna. Memorijski čip prati odgovarajući kontroler. Ova dva elementa čine praktično ceo uređaj odnosno memoriju.

Veliki broj ljudi smatra da je spašavanje podataka sa memorija nemoguće, ta izjava je tačna samo u slučaju kada je memorijski čip uništen (slomljen ili pregoreo).

Daleko veća verovatnoća je otkaz kontrolera, odnosno čipa koji je zadužen za upis podataka u memoriju kao i za čitanje podataka. U tom slučaju postoje velike šanse za 100% uspeh spašavanja podataka.

Tehnologija koja se primenjuje prilikom upisa/čitanja podataka se razlikuje od proizvođača do proizvođača i ona u znatnoj meri otežava proces spašavanja podataka.

Elementarna logika je sledeća. Prisutni kontroler određuje algoritam kao i veličinu segmenta za upis i čitanje podataka. Potrebno je “razbiti” algoritam. 

Algoritam koji je primenjen predstavlja zaštićeni mehanizam, odnosno patentiran je od strane proizvođača i nije javno dostupan.

Podaci se na memorije smeštaju potpuno drugačije nego u hard diskovima. Celokupna memorija je podeljena na “strane”, veličina strane kao i način smeštanja zavisi od tipa algoritma koji je primenjen. Takođe raspored strana u okviru same memorije nije linearan, u zavisnosti od tipa primenjenog algoritma postoji više mogućih varijanti mix-a samih strana.

Da bi se uspešno spasili podaci, potrebno je detektovani određeni mix strana memorije, otkloniti ga, a tek potom primenom adekvatnog algoritma sve stranice spojiti u jednu celinu. Nakon ovog procesa moguć je logički pristup podacima. Odnosno neophodno je odrediti parametre primenjenog fajl sistema (95% slučajeva FAT12) i nakon toga restaurirati logičku strukturu i kopirati podatke.

Izuzeci od opisanog postupka postoje. Mini i Micro SD kartice ne poseduju kontroler, a na primer SunDisk uređaji imaju enkriptovane strane u okviru memorija koje je nemoguće dekriptovati u slučaju otkaza kontrolera.

There has been no shortage of press articles lamenting the design and restrictions imposed by Microsoft Vista.  Indeed, to say that the public opinion of Microsoft Vista is jaded should be considered an understatement.  However, not everything is as bleak as the press has painted it.  Below is my opinion as to how Microsoft could have defrayed the considerable amount of damage to their flagship brand, Microsoft Windows.

1.  Microsoft Vista is a new operating system … not a cosmetic upgrade. Microsoft should have explained that Windows Vista is a significantly new operating system, not just another facelift for getting more money from the public.  While the Windows family upgrades from NT to 2000 to XP were all beneficial, the public perception is that another version of Windows is just a fresh face with new features and gadgets on the same Windows system underneath.  However, that is not the case with Windows Vista.  There are a new generation of Microsoft Windows operating systems that are re-written to handle tasks in memory to take advantage of the newest hardware and technologies. Windows Vista is a severance of the umbilical cord going all the way back to the days of Windows 95. Had Microsoft either asked or told us that there would be some changes necessary to cut that tie to the past, I believe that the majority of the purchasing public and corporate users would have welcomed the changes.  Apple Computer completely replaced their operating system Mac OS with Mac OS X not that long ago. This also forced all of their users to replace their software library with ‘OS-X compatible’ versions. Due to the fact that Apple controls the hardware that their Mac OS X operating system gets installed on, and the fact that there are substantially less Mac users, the public perception of Apple’s woes is not as severe as the impact of change to the legions of Windows users.

2. Vista requires a minimum threshold for RAM. Never attempt to run Microsoft Vista with less than 2GB RAM. Also, an absolute minimum requirement of 128MB of Video RAM is needed for decent performance, but 256MB or above is highly recommended. Manufacturers of PC’s, such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Sony etc … have all mistakenly sold PC’s with as little as 512MB RAM to 1GB RAM on new systems that had Windows Vista pre-installed. Additionally, those PC’s were configured from the factory to run the Vista Aero interface (see item 4 below), further severely impacting the performance at both boot-up and when fully up and operational. Had Microsoft made it a requirement to establish a minimum amount of RAM and Video RAM to run Vista, they could have avoided some very bad first impressions experienced by end users. And those bad experiences translated into a public relations mess very quickly.

3. Install Vista as a fresh installation versus upgrade. Never install Windows Vista as an upgrade over Windows XP. Simply put, performing the upgrade is a formula for the creation of future support issues. Due to the requirement to obtain programs that are specifically ‘Vista-Compatible,’ performing a Vista upgrade will only create a situation where there is one foot in the past and one foot in the present. A clean install of Windows Vista, and installation of all of your programs anew, is always the preferred method for setting up your PC. In fact, this approach should be your preferred method with any operating system.

4. Use ReadyBoost. This is a feature that your Vista PC must take advantage of. ReadyBoost allows you to employ those ubiquitous USB Flash Key Drives to enhance the performance of Windows memory operations. Purchase a 4GB USB Flash Drive that is ‘ReadyBoost’ compatible. Plug it into your PC. When it asks you if you wish to use the device for enhanced performance, tell it to use the maximum amount of space for ReadyBoost. If you do this, you will increase the performance of your PC significantly, even if the visual perception appears to be incremental. I strongly recommend that these inexpensive devices be plugged into any system running Windows Vista, either desktop or laptop.

5. If you are concerned about performance then turn off Vista Aero. Aero is the new interface to Windows Vista. However, using the ‘full’ Aero feature set will place a burden on your PC. You can still obtain most of the ‘sexy’ visual appearance of the Aero look while increasing the performance of your Vista PC by backing down the video settings to Windows Vista Basic, thus turning off Vista Aero.

I look at Microsoft Windows Vista as I did Microsoft Windows 2000. Windows 2000 was slow but extremely stable. Microsoft Windows XP came out of the same ‘family’ as Windows 2000. Windows XP is substantially faster than Windows 2000, but it was also considerably more unstable when it was introduced. The speed difference between XP and Vista is not substantial, although XP is faster. I agree that Windows XP runs great, and XP Service Pack 3 should prolong its service life for another few years. The termination of the sales of Windows XP, while unfortunate, is Microsoft’s determined push to get their users onto their next generation Windows platform. This will make future upgrades a lot less painful, so we’re told. Had Microsoft had more confidence in the intelligence of their user base then they might have thought more about managing the expectation level and hence avoided the countless attacks by the press.
