Prerequisite

BlackBerry Desktop Manager software installed on the PC

User must be logged in as Administrator or have administrative privileges in the profile to modify system files

PC with an available USB port

Setting up the device

On the handset, press the Menu button.
Scroll to Options and press the trackpad.
Scroll to Security Options and press the trackpad.
Scroll to Firewall and press the trackpad.
Scroll to Status and press the trackpad.
Scroll to Disabled and press the trackpad.
Press the Escape button.
Scroll to Save and press the trackpad.
Press the End Call Button.

Setting up the modem

On the PC, with the handset powered on, connect the USB cable from the USB port to the side of
 the handset.
Windows will detect the handset and install all necessary drivers.

Double click the Desktop Manager icon on the desktop.
 Click Options and then Connection Settings.
Ensure the Connection drop down displays USB.
Click Detect.
When the Warning dialog box appears, click OK.
When the Success dialog box appears, it should display USB device found, click OK.
Ensure the Connection field displays USB-PIN: and click OK.
Click Start and then Control Panel.
Double click the Phone and Modem Options icon.
Click the Modems tab.
Click once on the Standard Modem then click Properties.
Click the Advanced tab.
Type +cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com" in the Extra initialization commands field. (USE THE " AND NOT SINGLE ' FOR THE QUOTES)
Click OK twice.

Setting up the connection

On the PC, return to the Control Panel.
Double click the Network Connections icon.
Under Network Tasks, click Create a new connection.
A New Connection Wizard will appear, click Next.
Click to select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
Click to select Set up my connection manually and click Next.
Click to select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.
If prompted, click to select Standard Modem over Bluetooth link.
Ensure it is the only modem selected and then click Next.
Enter T-Mobile GPRS in the ISP Name field and then click Next.
Enter *99# in the Phone Number field and then click Next.
Ensure the User name, Password and Confirm password fields are blank.
Click to select from the available options and then click Next.
Click Finish.

Making the connection

On the PC, a Connect  GPRS dialog will appear.
Ensure the User name and Password fields are blank.
Ensure *99# is displayed in the Dial field.
Click Dial.
You will now be connected to the  GPRS service

Ubuntu 9.10

If you have upgraded to (or had a fresh install) of Ubuntu 9.10 you would definitely have encountered many problems and bugs . My advice would be to connect to the internet and perform a full update as soon as you can .

If you are a mobile broadband user , connecting to the internet in itself would be a major problem . The revamped network manager in 9.10 is exceptionally buggy and i have read of a lot of complaints from users (across the world) of having had problems with using mobile broadband .Native support is in-built for almost all mobile broadband ISPs (of India) theoretically and yet practically a lot of them dont work .

Problem:

Network manager will detect your modem correctly but will refuse to connect to the internet .

Solution:

A bug report was filed by a Reliance Netconnect Broadband+ user . An update may have been released  by the developers  as many users have reported that the Network manager started connecting to the internet successfully after an update .

So update your karmic Koala using another connection .

Workaround: (Use Wvdial)

If you like me dont have another connection , boot up windows and download the wvdial software for karmic koala install it in ubuntu and use it to connect to the internet and update your system .

Procedure

1. Download the following files (in windows or any other machine) and install them in ubuntu

If you have an intel processor select the i386 links and in the next page select an Asian server .

PS : I am guessing people using the newer Huawei EC1260 modem may have more problems with the network manager .

Merupakan layanan berbasis data dari telkom flexi, dengan layanan ini anda dapat intenetan sepuasnya cuma dengan Rp. 2500 / hari atau Rp. 15.000 / hari. Caranya ketik REG HARIAN / REG MINGGUAN kirim ke 2255. setalah itu anda akan mendapat konfirmasi username, password dan nomor dial. INGAT ..!! apabila anda menggunakan username dan password biasanya yaitu telkomnet@flexi maka otomatis yang terpotong adalah pulsa reguler, walaupun register flexinet unlimited anda sudah ada konfirmasi berhasil.

Soal kecepatan, Payah….. untuk download cuma dapat 3 kbps dan langsung drop ke 1 kbps. Sebenarnya saya pertama langsung milih flexi karena berpikir bahwa itu milik PT. Telkom yang mana tentu jaringan dan layanannya pasti lebih bagus. Tapi ternayata flexinet nasibnya sama denga telkom flash yang banyak di cacimaki pelanggan. Mengenaskan nasib telkom ini.

Smart
saya menggunakan kartu smart yang ada gratisan satu gigi perbulan. Dengan hasil cukup lumayan. Lebih cepat dari flexi. Ohya maaf nggak bisa ngasih hasil speedtestnya, karena kartunya keburu di pinjam sama yang punya. Xixixixi.

Fren mobi unlimited
Kartunya saya dapat ketika membeli usb modem cdma merk Speedup di HI Tech mall atau yang lebih terkenal dengan THR MALL surabaya dengan harga Rp.3.87.500,- pertama kali tidak saya daftarkan mobi unlimited, tapi pakai pulsa regular. Ternyata puas. Langsung cabut ke konter pulsa tetangga rumah beli pulsa fren 50 rb dan dapat pulsa tambahan 25 rb. Kalau dla brosurnya disebutkan 100 rb untuk internetan tiga bulan non stop. Cara daftarnya, ketik REG MAX50 SPEEDUP kirim ke 777 (ini sama persis seperti petunjuk dari brosurnya speedup) dan hanya berlaku untuk kartu fren sobat. Lalu akan dapat balasan konfirmasi tentang user name dan password nya. Dan sekali lagi awas…..! gunakan password dan username yang baru diberikan lewat sms jangan pakai m8.

Ohya, hampir lupa, saya pakai Linux Mint Gloria

I don’t know if it’s just me but there are these days in an week where I tend to worry so much that my productivity drops to near-stagnation. Just nothing seems to happen other than a tense me appearing tense. Anyway, I’m just recovering from a somewhat unhappy experience with my Karmic Beta installation on my laptop. Yes, it’s another ooh-nareshov-does-another-distro-shift post. And here’s what happened.

First, I get a call from Vadiraj on a Wednesday morning, out of the blue, from Goa. Apparently, his friend and he planned a noon-trip to this place just to score something that’s allegedly only available there (in India, i.e.). He wanted me to do a quick Google to give him some pointers. Unsuspend my laptop, I did. To connect to the internet through my USB modem, it failed. No matter what I tried – wvdial, pppd, NetworkManager – I couldn’t connect. And I went on a reboot-and-try spree. No luck. All that happened was me end up with a laptop that’d get stuck at boot trying to fsck my filesystem. Enraged, I was.

I reach office and start moving my stuff off of my laptop preparing for a fresh-install. Of, *shudder*, Arch Linux. Installation was pretty straight forward. But I didn’t really enjoy it as much I did Gentoo or FreeBSD. Not to mention all that sorcery trying to get my USB modem to work being unsuccessful. (At some point I had udev identifying my device as a CDMA modem and hal identify it as a GSM modem).

That night, no internet. The next day, installed Debian testing. But I had the same darned problem of being unable to tap my touchpad to click on, you know, things. The GNOME which Debian-testing featured didn’t have that tab under System > Preferences > Mouse where I could enable “Tap to click”. A quick Google suggested the use of GSynaptics – which had a “Tapping” tab where I promptly enabled “Enable Tapping” and had my Aha-moment.

Phew.

Oh, and, today I get a pay-your-internet-bill reminder. And I did it within minutes of seeing this. And here I am, about seven hours after I did that and back from a pretty decent string chamber orchestra organised by the Bangalore School of Music for raising funds for the Karnataka-floods relief, blogging about why my USB modem wasn’t working and the things I did in the past few days.

And regarding my worries. Wanda the Fish, the fortune teller had this to say:

Biasanya saya melakukan koneksi ke internet menggunakan 2 cara, jika di kantor saya menggunakan fasilitas wifii yang disediakan kantor dan jika di rumah menggunakan modem hsdpa untuk browsing atau aktifitas internet lainnya. Kedua cara tersebut saya gunakan dengan notebook yang sama dengan sistem Ubuntu. Baru-baru ini saat saya akan melakukan browsing di rumah menggunakan modem hsdpa saya mengalami kegagalan. Aneh memang, karena ketika di kantor saya bisa melakukan browsing dengan normal tanpa kendala apapun menggunakan wifii. Sebelum kejadian ini saya sempat mengupdate sistem ubuntu dengan koneksi wifii (kantor). Apa ada hubungannya saya juga kurang memahaminya.

Keanehan kedua, modem dapat terkoneksi dengan baik ke internet dengan kondisi lampu indikator koneksi menyala dengan baik. Kemudia IP dinamic yang di berikan ISP pun sudah di tampilkan/didapat. Tapi ketika firefox dibuka tidak bisa melakukan browsing sebagaimana biasa. Saya mencoba melakukan ping ke alamat tertentu (yahoo.com) tapi juga tidak bisa. Padahal sebelumnya semuanya lancar lancar saja saat saya browsing dengan modem saya.

Bedasarkan pengalaman selama ini biasanya jika koneksi lancar / modem / jaringan telah terkoneksi tetapi tidak bisa browsing atau melakukan ping ke suatu alamat, permasalahannya ada pada pengisian DNS. Saya mencoba melihat konfigurasi DNS di resolv.conf. Tidak terlihat ada keanehan karena DNS dari provider telah tertera di resolv.conf.

Terakhir saya mencoba melihat konfigurasi network connection.

Ketika saya melihat pada bagian IPv4 Setting — Method, di sana tertera Automatic (PPP) addresses only. Dengan DNS Server telah tercantum di dalamnya. Dengan cara ini kita bisa menentukan sendiri DNS yang kita mau. Akhirnya saya mencoba mengganti Automatic (PPP) addresses only dengan Automatic (PPP). Dengan maksud agar nomor DNS nya bisa ditentukan sendiri secara otomatis. Setelah itu saya kembali mencoba untuk browsing. Hehehehe…Alhamdulillah..berhasil. Dengan memberi keleluasaan sitem untuk menerima DNS otomatis dari provider ternyata baru berhasil.

AUTOMATIC:

Any one can connect internet with mobile and other gprs edge modem in ubuntu.Fortunately, Ubuntu 9.04 supports automatic detection and configuration of mobile modem and usb modem for any country that supports mobile internet(gprs or edge) that means mobile broadband.Plug your gprs/edge modem supported mobile or usb modem to computer(most of the usb modem is supported by now.)A new window will open and will ask you to select your country and mobile operator.After a few seconds click on your network icon (normally placed in the right corner of the upper panel).You will find a new menu named with your mobile network which was not there before plugging your mobile or modem.Select that one.after a few second you will be connected with internet.open your favourite web browger (mine mozilla) and serf any web site you want.

Manually:

Plug your mobile modem(usb modems may work in this way).Open a terminal.Type “sudo su” then type “wvdialconf” some text will come up on terminal,and there will be a line look like “Found a modem on /dev/ttyUSB2” or similar to this.If the line does not appear in the terminal,that means there is no modem or there are some other problems.Now type “gedit /etc/wvdial.conf“.A text editor will come up with some text looks like

Last night, the maximum speed I got here in Kluang for download/upload is 0.29/0.1Mbps. Making it 0.39Mbps in total and it gets worse during day. Probably less than 0.1Mbps in total. Still considered better than 384Kbps GPRS can provide. Celcom needs to upgrade the speed in village area soon.

Hari ni genap seminggu aku guna Maxis Broadband. Tak tahu sebenarnya yang mana lebih pantas dan surf internet ni. Antara Celcom Broadband dan Maxis Broadband, jari aku mengira-ngira yang mana lebih baik. Tapi akhirnya hati aku mula tergerak untuk pakai Celcom Broadband. Jumaat lepas aku terus ke kedai berhampiran sekitar Bangi. Cari-cari tak jumpa pulak yang jual Celcom Broadband. Hampa dan hampes!. Adalah satu kedai jual tapi time pergi tu tuan kedai nampak cam dah kaya sebab kedai terbuka tapi tuan takde.

Bila macam tu, hati pun berbolak balik. Akhirnya bertukar untuk mencuba Maxis Broadband. Bayar RM100 untuk pendaftaran, dapat free USB modem. Dengan kelajuan 7.2 kbps mungkin bukanlah kelajuan untuk men’download’. Tapi at least dapat selalu menulis di blog ni, and tak betak (cakap ganu maksudnya lambat) kira oklah tu. So bagi aku Maxis Broadband ni kira oklah. Tapi mungkin duk area bandar ni. Kalau kat kampung aku pun tak sure dapat ke tidak. Lebih-lebih lagi kat rumah aku kat Raub (penuh dikelilingi bukit bukau) rasanya mungkin takde coverage.

Hari tu kawan aku Izo (Izoblog.com) ade jugak pernah guna Celcom Broadband. Katanya lambat giler!. Jadi sekarang aku try pulak guna Maxis Broadband ni. Untuk buat perbandingan sikit-sikit . Ala..lagi pun kat Malaysia ni Broadband ni baru nak mula menapak. So kalau lambat tak pelik.

Aktifitas berinternet ria akan terasa terganggu, jika kemudian anda masih tergantung dengan “Counter” yang ada di Warnet, atau “Timing Counter” yang ada di Speedy, sehingga tanpa anda sadari, anda akan segera mencapai batas yang telah di tentukan, maka oleh sebab itu, berdasarkan pengalaman saya, sebaiknya segeralah anda beralih ke sistem layanan yang menyediakan service akses “Unlimited”, namun dengan harga yang terjangkau.

Saat ini saya menggunakan layanan akses dari Telkomsel Flash, paket Unlimited Corporate, Rp. 100.000,-/ bulan di luar Modem, jika kita hitung maka berapa jam pun kita online, maka yang ita bayar hanya Rp. 4000,- (termasuk ppn) perhari….! Murah bukan?

Cuman banyak orang terkendala oleh Bundled Broadband USB Modem yang ditawarkan oleh Telkomsel, dengan angsuran Rp. 125.000,-/ bulan selama 1 tahun, jatuhnya jadi Rp. 1.500.000,- (Satu Juta Lima Ratus Rubu Rupiah), sangat mahal bukan? Padahal dipasaran berkisar antara Rp. 700 rb – 900rb tergantung spesifikasi dan merek.

Anda kuatir tentang cara instalnya, jika nggak beli modem di Telkomsel? Ikutilah tutorial berikut yang akan memandu anda dalam melakukan instalasi dan  seting koneksi dengan Telkom Flash.

Instlasi Broadband USB Modem

Untuk melakukan proses instalasi paket USB Modem, silahkan lakukan tahapan berikut :

• Silahkan masukkan kartu Halo Telkomsel Flash anda yang telah terdaftar dan  diaktifasi oleh Telkomsel, letak port kartu adalah di atas dari head slot male usb modem.
• Colokkan USB Modem anda ke komputer/ laptop, maka kemudian autodetect new hardware akan mendeteksi usb modem tersebut dan akan memberikan konfirmasi instalasi

• Klik tombol Next untuk memulai proses instalasi. Kemudian akan muncul halaman instruksi instalasi dan Persetujuan lisensi software, jawab dengan mengklik tombol Agree

• Langkah selanjutnya adalah menentukan lokasi folder instalasi, dan hal ini 100% yakin, jangan anda ubah, klik aja tombol Next untuk melanjutkan

• Selanjutnya akan muncul pilihan Menu Folder, dan sekali lagi 100% tidak perlu anda ubah, klik Install untuk memulai proses instalasi.

• Kemduian proses instalasi akan berjalan yang ditunjukkan oleh jendela indikator dalam bentuk progress bar

• Setelah proses instalasi pada progress bar penuh, maka muncul jendela konfirmasi bahwa proses instalasi telah selesai

• Klik tombol Finish untuk mengakhiri.
