I love the holidays, especially Thanksgiving. Who wouldn’t love an entire day dedicated to giving thanks over a feast of meats, casseroles, and desserts galore. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Thanksgiving in my family is definitely an event. Whether it’s my father’s feast of meats, or my Grandmother’s casserole smorgasboard, I am never left unsatisfied. This year will be spent at my Grandma and Grandpa’s house in Oklahoma for the biannual Thanksgiving/family reunion. Every other year the entire family comes together from Oklahoma, Texas, New York, Salt Lake City, and Tennessee. It’s quite an event and I must say the food can’t get any better anywhere else. I can’t wait to take lots of pics on Thursday and share all of the good eats with everyone this weekend, but for now I wanted to share my favorite dish that has become a Hibbard family staple.

The origins of this recipe started with my amazing Aunt Janice. She was a wonderful woman full of spirit and love, and her Squash Casserole reflected all of the love she conveyed. The recipe has been passed throughout the family but for the most part has maintained it’s original flavor. I made just two small changes, even though it tastes amazing with it. You really must make this recipe, it’s the best casserole I have ever had!!

Aunt Janice’s Squash Casserole

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Boil a large pot of water. Slice the squash, onion, and jalapenos. Boil the squash in the water until slightly tender. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and saute the onions and jalapenos until tender.

In a large bowl mix together the cream of chicken soup and the next three ingredients, through the sour cream. Set aside. In a medium microwave-safe bowl melt the butter and mix the package of cornbread mix until coated.

In a 9×13 casserole dish spoon half of the cornbread mixture on the bottom of the pan or until covered, but not too thick of a layer. Drain the squash and add to the creamy mixture, along with the onion mixture, and spoon into the pan on top of the cornbread mixture. Top with the cheese, then top the cheese with the cornbread mixture, forming a nicely covered layer, but again, not too thick (you don’t want the casserole to be too dry).

Place in the oven, uncovered, on the middle rack and bake for 30-35 minutes until bubbly.

Kings of Leon: I absolutely love this band. My old roommate first introduced them to me back in 2003 and I’ve been hooked ever since. These Tennesse boys can rock out to great tracks like “Holy Roller Novocaine” and “Red Morning Light”, then slow it down with songs like their newest hit “Use Somebody”, the video shown below. The following video is my favorite cover of Kings of Leon’s “Knocked Up”  by Lykke Li. You know what time it is.  Study Sundays and Panic Mondays.  Yes, panic, not manic, because on Mondays I am officially panicking to make my Monday night deadlines.  For school assignments, I often have to search for movie and music clips on YouTube or Hulu.  And in all my years of schooling, having to search for movies and music online is definitely one of the coolest assignments I’ve had to complete.  In my search tonight, I stumbled upon this video.

If you know anything about me, you should know that I love acoustic music, especially acoustic versions of popular songs.  This is my favorite song for this fall season, so count on it definitely going on this year’s life soundtrack.  And thanks to Rockband and 2K Sports video game soundtracks, I’ve grown a liking to Paramore in recent years.  Put the two together and you have my favorite cover of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody”.

So if you can serenade me with the guitar, consider my attention yours.  And it wouldn’t hurt if you could play hockey and look like this too:

I love this cover for the simple fact that Hayley Williams voice is amazing and it shows. Some people don’t like the cover because it’s not an exact copy of how Kings of Leon did it. That is actually why I like it, she put her own spin on it and it turned out really well.

If you recently saw Jay-Z on ‘Friday Night With Jonathan Ross’ or ‘Later… With Jools Holland’, you will have seen Bridget Kelly already. And if you didn’t already know who she was, you will almost definitely have wondered.

She was the massive voice filling in for Alicia Keys on Empire State Of Mind, and through similar performances around the world has been gaining a large amount of interest. Signed to Jay’s new management/music-publishing company, Roc Nation, Bridget (a.k.a. BeeKay) is in the process of finishing her album which, given her voice, has the potential to be really good.

For your ears and eyes, here she is in a mellow mood and accompanied by some piano goodness, with her cover of Kings Of Leon’s Use Somebody.

New chart entrants “La La La” by LMFAO and “Replay” by I.Y.A.Z. both claim top 5 spots on The Dean’s List. Lady GaGa enters The Dean’s List top 10 with her latest electro dance pop concoction “Bad Romance.”

So I woke up today with so much on my mind.  The new “epiphany” that I seriously have an Axis I clinical diagnosis is really starting to sink in.  Last week I told Dr. K that I was not having much luck finding trauma support groups.  Dr. K. mentioned McLean Hospital in an offhand way.  Then he mentioned a 2-week DBT day program at Mclean.  This program has lectures, group therapy, and individual therapy.  I told him I would look into it. When I did look into it, I felt very conflicted.  The program seems excellent, but McLean is the preeminent psychiatric treatment center in the United States, I mean hello, Sylvia Plath (The Bell Jar) or Susanna Kaysen (Girl, Interrupted).

The thought that Dr. K thought I could really benefit from this program felt rather demoralizing.  I could not think of a way to re-frame it positively, I felt like a failure.  I have failed at being sane.  Obviously, I am just unfit.  I let this horrible truth swirl around without interruption until it diffused throughout my entire consciousness.

Then I tried to figure out why I was taking this so hard?  What is the big deal about a DBT program?  What is so bad about needing help?  I realized all this time the message I’ve been fed is that my needing help was at worst a nuisance and inconvenience to others and at best an unwanted crisis of conscience.  My main objective was to Be Good.  Be a Good Girl.  Stop Crying It Will Be O.K.  It’s Not That Bad, Stop Being Dramatic. At least when you are a Good Girl people smile at you and say nice things about you.  They may not save you or even intervene, but they will tell you, “Phoenix, you are such a Good Girl.  You are so smart, you are going to have a great life when you get older, just wait, and see.”

Since this was all I had to cling to, I based my whole life on that shit.  I surrounded myself with people who will feed into it once I escaped my family of origin.  “If anyone can handle it, you can Phoenix.  You are a smart girl, I am sure you can figure it out.  You need to stop being so negative.  You need to move on with your life. Let Go and let God.  You need to get your flesh under control.  You have unforgiveness issues.” *SIGH*

The other thing I realized is that I have spent my sessions being a Good Girl.  I soldier through “material” like a green beret.  I make lists.  I Rationalize Everything That I Think And Feel because I am a Good Girl.  See Dr. K, I did half the work for you.  I don’t really have a problem Dr. K because I understand the underpinnings, the principles, the concepts.  Now if I could just get rid of these pesky FEELINGS….

The reason I had a mini nervous breakdown when I thought I couldn’t see Dr. K is not because I have some weird crush on him.  It is not a romantic delusion.  He is the first person I have TRUSTED with EVERYTHING since I was preschool age. Somewhere deep inside I am still looking for a parent.  The broken down, infantile, lost part of myself that could NEVER depend on anyone has decided to depend on him.  That part of me is saying I NEED you, please do not leave me here.  I MISS you, do you miss me too?  Do you think of me and smile, or do you worry?  Do you care about me?  Are you doing all that you can to help me?

These needs are reprehensible to me.  I call it my rational mind but Dr. K. thinks it sounds more like my mother.  “Well you get to be the one with all the power.  You get to be professional, and have intact boundaries and I am over here with all of these inappropriate needs and feelings.”  I sniffle pathetically at my last session.  Dr. K grimaces and shakes his head.  This is an expression parents use when toddlers pick up something yucky.  “There goes that word again, inappropriate.  As if having needs is wrong.” He says with disdain. I look at my hands with shame. As far as I am concerned I am being rational. But what if this so called logical mindset is really just abusive and it has been running interference against  my needy, inner child all along?

I realize now that the underlying message I keep telling myself is “You don’t NEED ANYONE! I will not admit that I have any needs at all except for food, water, and shelter (when I was a teen I was convinced I could get by without the food and water!). When this hit me I said to myself, “That is preposterous, I mean it is fine if I don’t want to tell Dr. K I need him, that isn’t necessary anyway, but I know I have told someone I need them….Haven’t I?”    *nothing but crickets baby*

So I was running this rambling, neurotic commentary by my husband and in the middle I said, “I’ve told you that I NEED you before, haven’t I?”. Hubby shrugs, gives a quick uncomfortable grin. “Well actually no, You’ve said I’m your rock, you love me, you don’t know what you would do without me, but you’ve never told me that you need me.” WOW.  17 years  together and I have never said that to him. It goes completely against my inner framework. When I realize that I feel I need someone, I either sabotage it or I try to “work off the debt” so to speak. I do so much and work so hard at it that the relationship becomes burdensome and undesirable.

I don’t even know what else to say, I just needed to work this stuff out online…………………………

OK so a while back I had to mourn the loss of my laptop charger.. Not cool. Anyway because of that I have lost the power to surf the net or youtube in the comfort of my own home, and using my mobile phone to do such things is nothing more than a mission.

So, I’m back in my cousins room jamming on his desktop while he and my other cousin scream their asses off playing C.O.D 4. Then while searching average Joes and Janes singing songs on youtube my cousin tells me to search this guy.

So I do as he says and then I get extremely happy with the results. One song and I didn’t even hesitate to click the Subscribe button!!

Chris Brown – I Can Transform Ya feat Swizz Beatz & Lil Wayne

En estos días que he andado del tingo al tango en mi auto con la maestra Jimena, también conocida como mi hermana, llegamos a la conclusión que en estos últimos días de octubre del 2009 es necesario dejar descansar unas cuantas canciones.

La primera que viene a la lista es “No me doy por vencido” de Luis Fonsi. Ok que yo casi raye el CD del boricua en mi auto por escuchar esta canción una y otra vez, pero eso fue a finales del 2008 caray… ya es hora de que le den un respiro a este tema en las estaciones de radio.

Escuchar su versión original, su versión urbana o su versión grupera ya no es novedad y si la siguen poniendo tanto van a terminar por hacerme aborrecer la canción.

Y bueno si ya dejan descansar este tema, de una vez también hagan lo mismo con otro tema de Fonsi “Aquí estoy yo”, que ya también me lo esta choteando de tanto que la ponen en la radio.

En todo caso si el asunto es poner canciones del cantautor boricua, el CD de Fonsi tiene otros temas, a mi por ejemplo para estos días ya grises del otoño me apetece más escuchar:

La segunda canción que tiene ya que desaparecer de las ondas radiales es “I gotta a Feeling” de los Black Eyed Peas. Ojo que acepto que la tarare mil veces en el verano en Dallas, Monterrey y Filadelfia, pero bueno ya fue mucho de “Tonight is going to be a good night”, si eso ya fue.
Así que ojala y escuche menos “I gotta a feeeling” y un poco más “Meet me haflway”, el nuevo sencillo de los Black Eyed Peas, pero de nuevo, ojo no saturen porque luego uno se cansa de las canciones bien pronto.

La tercera canción que me obliga a cambiarle al radio cada que la escucho es “Use somebody” de los Kings of Leon. En serio que ya fue mucho escucharla tantos y tantos meses y ya me cansó a pesar de lo mucho, mucho que me gustaba.

Otra canción que necesito dejar de escuchar es “Lamento Boliviano”, ya se que es del año del kikiriki, pero no les miento acá la pasan tanto en la radio que parece estreno.

El colmo es que un día no se donde escuche que dijeron algo así como: “Y ahora algo para todos los roqueros”, y me quede pensando definitivamente necesito el adaptador para escuchar mi iPod en el auto porque si estas son las novedades, andamos mal.

Mi quinto lugar es un tema que tuvo un gran momento en 2001, gracias a la pelicula Y tu mamá también, pero ya por favor dejen descansar el tema de “Si no te hubieras ido”.

Definitivamente ya no lo quiero escuchar ni en voz del Buki o de Maná, neta que no le hacen un favor a los artistas al poner tanto y tanto estas mismas canciones.

En fin yo creo que lo tengo que  hacer es ahorrar para comprarme mi bendito adaptador para escuchar el iPod en mi auto.

La canción novedad: ‘Relator”, Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson. Mi amigo José me regaló el Cd Break Up esta semana y este es uno de los temas que más se me ha pegado. Tanto la letra como la música me pareció muy pegajosa y eso que la Johansson me cae gorda desde que la vi en la película He is not that into you.

La canción que no dejo de tararear: “Quiereme”, Nuria Fergo. Desde que me tope con esta canción intepretada por una novia, me pudo encantar y no la he dejado de tararear.

But ha! I do know what variety is! And I’ve been trying to not completely OD on her music anyway, as I don’t want to grow tired of it. At least, not yet.

I’ve posted this video because I feel that everyone should listen to this excellent rendition of Kings Of Leon – Use Somebody, that two superbly talented girls did; who are from my school. It’s really good, dead catchy and I feel that Sophie and Hatty added their own spin on the song with the uniqueness in their voices. Considering it’s the first time the two have done a track together, this is outstanding and we should all expect great things to come. Good work you two!
