It took me five months to get my hands on GreaseMonkey again. This time again, it’s a pretty simple script – In Hacker News, provide a bookmark link near each news item. I needed this one badly since I always open certain items only to bookmark them for future reading. The script can be found here.

Ok as for now I am planning to talk to you about adding themes to orkut.

Orkut dosent support as far as I know external themes. Ie they don’t allow other themes from outside their servers to be uploaded. They give only permission to use those themes provided by them

and get greasemonkey from there. Add that addon to the mozilla firefox that you are using. You may have to restart your browser. Now you have two choices. Either you can have a pre prepared theme directly from the web or you can create one of your own.

In case of pre prepared themes its easy business.. just google it.. use keywords like greasemonkey & orkut themes. That wouls do it . but there is always a catch… only run scripts that you trust… otherwise there can be a lot of privacy issues…!!!! U know what I mean…!!!!

That would install the theme locally. Which means this theme is only visible from the host system only. Anyway that dosent matter rite….!!! Why should we care about what others think about us…!!! Its all what we think about ourselves …!!!!

By the way to manage the greasemonkey feature go to mozilla firefox > tools > greasemonkey > check or uncheck “Enabled”.

Esta modificación puede afectar tanto a su contenido (alterando el propio DOM) como a su aspecto (alterando los estilos CSS) o a su funcionalidad (alterando los scripts asociados). Además, y por si fuera poco, nos regala continuamente la graciosa sonrisa del monito de su icono.

Sencillo script para Greasemonkey

Existen páginas en Internet que recopilan colecciones de scripts para Greasemonkey, siendo posiblemente la más famosa de ellas userscripts.org. La utilidad de estos scripts sólo está limitada por la imaginación de los programadores, yendo desde el bloqueo de publicidad, hasta hacer trampas en juegos online, pasando por mejorar ciertos aspectos de páginas muy utilizadas, como Wikipedia.

Como curiosidad, existen equivalentes para otros navegadores. En primer lugar, encontramos un software denominado GreasemonkIE, que permite ejecutar los scripts de Greasemonkey en Internet Explorer. Por su parte, GreaseKit hace lo propio con aplicaciones WebKit, como el navegador Safari. Por último, Opera permite, desde su versión 8, incorporar directamente scripts de Greasemonkey al navegador.

As for the tutorial, il explain on how to do it in Firefox. Its completely the same in Flock, just that you have to install these on flock.

The addon name is ‘greasemonkey’ more popularly known ad ‘GM’ , and you can get it at:

Once the addon page is opened, you now have to just install the addon

Click on the ‘Add to Firefox’ option , or you can also directly install greasemonkey by going to:

(.xpi is the extension for addons on firefox, and all firefox addons are installed in the broswer itself, not as seperate applications like in Internet Exploer. Flock follows the same engine as Firefox)

Click on the ‘install now’ button, and the install will start, and will prompt you to restart your browser to complete the installation.

Then, Simply, just close and open firefox, and your addon is installed. To confirm, you can a small ‘monkey face’ at the bottom of the browser. Right click, and check whether it is enabled. If disabled, enable it from there.

Now, your greasemonkey is installed and working

Now the only thing you need to do is install the scripts you want to use.

Look for scripts that end with an extension : “.user.js”

Click on the script link, and an option comes:

Click on the Install button and you script is installed and working fine.

Click on the ‘Show Script Source’ to view the script in your browser (only if you a bit about programming)

Do not install scripts that are not trustworthy.

Då och då stöter jag på förfrågningar om Google Reader och hur man på enklaste sätt hanterar RSS-flöden. Många vet inte RSS-flöden är och har kanske sina favoritbloggar och sajter som bokmärken i webbläsaren. Det här sättet fungerar naturligtvis också, men har man en gång gått över till att börja läsa genom en RSS-läsare som Google Reader är det svårt att sluta. Några av de främsta fördelarna är att det är tidsbesparande och att man får en större överblick av de bloggar man läser, och att man har möjlighet att dela in dem i olika teman/foldrar och således enkelt välja område utefter vad du är sugen på att läsa.

Google Reader fungerar bäst med webbläsaren Firefox, och ni som fortfarande sitter med Internet Explorer kan ladda ner Firefox här. För att kunna använda Google Reader måste du ha en gmail-adress, och när du skaffat det registrerar du dig Google Reader på den här adressen. Det första du ska göra är att lägga till adresserna till de bloggar/tidningar/sajten vars uppdateringar du vill ta del av. Det finns tre olika sätt att göra detta. Dels kan du skriva in adresserna direkt i Google Reader (längst upp till vänster under “Lägg till prenumeration), dels kan du trycka på på den “orangea knappen” när du inne på sidor och klicka på alternativet “Prenumerera via RSS” (sedan ska du välja alternativet att börja prenumera med Google/Google Reader), och du kan även importera feeds från annan feedläsare som en OPML-fil. Om du är osäker- välj det första alternativet. Börja med att lägga in dina favoritbloggar och utforska de olika funktionerna som finns för mappar/foldrar  (om du vill dela in dina prenumerationer efter teman), delade objekt (blogginlägg du vill dela med dig av) och stjärnmärkta objekt (blogginlägg du vill spara för ett eget bruk).

Better GReader

Ett av de bästa tilläggen för Google Reader har Mymlan skrivit om här – Better GReader. Många stör sig nämligen på att alla sajter inte visar den fullständiga artikeln i RSS-formatet (bland annat blogg.se och de flesta tidningar), men det här kringgår du med det här tilläget. Du klickar helt enkelt två gånger på rubriken, och så öppnas internetsidan direkt i Google Reader utan att du behöver lämna sidan. Min dator mår betydligt bättre och kraschar betydligt mer sällan nu när jag har det här tillägget, och jag slipper sitta med 40 olika flikar öppna. Rekommenderas.

Jag stör mig ofta på Google Reader är så fruktansvärt ful. Försökte ett tag att kringgå detta genom att använda Feedly, men det var inget för mig. Här finns nu lösningen, med det underbara namnet HelvetiReader. Google Reader förvandlas till stilren feedläsare i vitt, grått och rött- se ovan! Installera genom att använda detta script.

Google Reader + Twitter

Ett av mina favoritscript är detta som gör det enkelt att twittra direkt från Google Reader. Det är mycket användbart script som till och med automatiskt kan skapa Tiny-URL-s. Några knapptryckrningar, så har du en länk till en artikel eller en bloggpost ute på Twitter. Installera här.

Google Reader + Delicious

Om du sparar bokmärken på Delicious är det betydligt bättre att använda detta script istället för en bookmarklet i webbläsarens fönster. Du slipper således att lämna Google Reader för att bege dig in på aktuell sida, och en ruta där man fyller i artikelinformationen öppnas automatiskt, med länk och titel ifyllt.

I wrote my first GreaseMonkey script this weekend !! The script runs on GMail and results in showing only those labels which have at least one unread mail in them.

A GM script for doing the same already exist but had some problems since it uses the HTML classes and XPath to manipulate the DOM. I avoided using XPath and instead used the GMail-GreaseMonkey API which is still experimental. The API is not completely reliable as well as its not always working right. Yet I wanted to stick with it just for the fun of it

Though the script is not perfect yet and hangs the browser sometimes, I am happy about the fact that I finally shrugged off my laziness and did something useful after a long time

PS :  The title is to motivate myself to write some more scripts soon ! !!

Not using a desktop Twitter client? Maybe you’re quite happy to use the Twitter site to post updates and monitor those you follow. Just because you do doesn’t mean you don’t have access to more powerful interface options than the bare minimum Twitter provides.

Grab some Userscripts, and use your browser give your Twiter / Home some handy new features! I’ve gathered eight of my favorites – feel free to share yours in the comments!

Troy’s Twitter Script – provides several additional functions, like short URL expansion, inline media viewing, and nested replies. Also adds a search box (for those of us who can’t use the real deal just yet), retweet link, and an @mentions link to see who’s been talking about you.

Twitter Friends Name Helper – adds a handy autocomplete ability to the update box. Start typing a friend’s name (no @ sign required) and a dropdown appears from which you can choose a name. If only one match is found, Name Helper will instantly insert it.

Twitter Saviour – blocks tweets that contain text you don’t want to see. Use it to filter (gasp!) inappropriate cursing or annoying fluff you can do without, like comments about the Jonas Bothers (typo?).

There’s also Hashtag Ignore, which you can use to block specific tags. Would be more useful if more people used hashtags.

Display Popular Trends – adds a handy list of the current top ten keywords and hashtags to the Twitter sidebar.

Twitter URL Shortener – some URLS push your update input beyond 140 characters, at which point Twitter won’t let you submit. This script takes care of things by automatically squeezing any URL in the box.

Universal Post Bar / AddThis Anywhere – These both provide the same function, adding a small, clickable social sharing menu to every page you visit. Click to open the menu, then click where you want to send it – Twitter, for example. My only gripe was with their lack of URL-shortening kung fu, but the previous script takes care of that anyway.

Back in Oct 2006 I did a little GM script to automate more personalized replies (used to do it manually with a little bit of HTML). After a long period of neglect, I am trying to work on it again to incorporate some user suggestions.

It adds “(reply with name, icon, icon&name)” links at each of the comments under your photo. When you click on the link, the buddy icon html code will be added into the Add your comment box, where you can show nicely who your replies are directed at. Experiment with preview and you will get the hang of formatting your replies in no time. (Should work on photo and discussion thread pages).

It skips over deleted accounts and only offers the name link if the contact has no personalized buddy icon.

Es un poco raro de ver pero os digo que habria que hacer, buscas un script que te guste, lo encuentras y clikeas sobre el, y te aparecera una barra de navegacion debajo del titulo de dicho script, le das a uno que pone source code, donde te aparece todo el codigo del script en cuestion….Justo debajo de la barra de navegacion pone There are X previus version of this script. YousableTubeFix es un script de greasemonkey que nos permte entre otras cosas descargar videos de la principal red social de videos, youtube. Aparte trae agregados otras mejoras que le dan a la página un aspecto a mi parecer más atractivo.

• Descargar el video en varios formatos FLV, MP4, High Quality FLV or High Quality MP4: clickea en el título de video o usa las opciones de descarga de la columna de la derecha (una vez descargado tendrás que renombrar el archivo para poder reproducirlo en el formato correcto usando un reproductor capaz de reproducir esos archivos, como FLV)
• Modificar el tamaño del video automáticamente o manualmente
• Quitar anuncios y secciones no queridas; como el contador de caractéres, anotaciones de video, sección de también viendo ahora, etc…
• Cambiar el formato y calidad del video manualmente o automáticamente. Los formatos disponibles son detectados por el script y se puede poner que use el mejor o el más rápido
• Expandir automáticamente las descripciones de los videos
• Mostrar todos los comentarios en la misma página
• Prevenir el autoplay, o el autoplay y el autodownload sustituyendo el video por una imagen hasta que se clickee sobre él (esto es útil si cargas varios videos de youtube a la vez)
• Cambiar la calidad del reproductor
• Saltar la verificación de edad automáticamente para usuarios logeados.
• Verificar actualizaciones del script cada día.

Webeando he encontrado dos scripts para descargar automáticamente de los dos gestores de archivos más usados actualmente: Rapidshare y Megaupload.

El script de rapidshare lo que hace es que cuando clickeas en un link de descarga de un archivo en rapidshare le da automáticamente a free user, espera la cuenta atrás y cuando termina le da a download. Él solito. Y hay más, si no te deja descargar el archivo (ya sea porque te estés descargando uno o porque te hallas descargado uno hace poco), va recargando la página periódicamente hasta que se descarga. Es perfecto para dejarlo toda la noche descargando con las páginas de cada descarga abiertas en varias pestañas, pero eso sí, recuerda decirle a firefox que descargue las cosas en un directorio por defecto para que no te pregunte entre descarga y descarga.

El script de megaupload hace lo mismo, pero tienes que darle tú a download, pero solo es cuestión de tiempo que se actualice y mejore.

Google Fx es un script de greasemonkey que sirve para modificar visual y funcionalmente el buscador google.

Características:

• Mejoras visuales en la página de búsqueda y en la página de resultados.
• Carga automática de la página siguiente para que al desplazarse hacia abajo la cargue automáticamente a continuación.
• Sugerencias de google.
• Posibilidad de elegir las páginas en las que se utilizará el script.
• Posibilidad de añadir enlaces a otros motores de búsquedas.
• También puede acortar tu nombre en todas las páginas quedando usuario en vez de usuario@gmail.com
• Cargar thumbshots de sitios

Greasemonkey es una extensión para firefox que permite manejar scripts. Los scripts con los que trajaba, permiten modificar la apariencia de las páginas que visitamos para hacerlas más agradables a la vista o para mejorar alguna funcionalidad. Son como las extensiones del navegador pero para cada página. Hay muchos scripts disponibles por ejemplo en userscripts. La instalación de los scripts es muy fácil. Una vez que en userscripts se ha encontrado un script interesante se le da al botón install situado arriba a la derecha de la página, nos saldrá una ventana y le daremos al botón instalar. Y ya está, así de fácil tendremos nuestro script listo y preparado para usar. Para probarlo tendremos que ir a la página en la que actúa el script y comprobarlo. Próximamente iré poniendo scripts que me parezcan interesantes para que los conozcais.

Nicht nur Firefox, auch Opera läßt sich nach eigenen Vorstellungen erweitern. Am bekanntesten sind wohl die Widgets, kleine Helferlein, die sich von Opera aus meist in eigenen Fenstern starten lassen. Eine richtige Integration in den Browser, wie bei vielen Firefox-Addons, geht den meisten Widgets jedoch ab. Abhilfe schaffen Userscripts. Die kleinen JavaScript-Dateien können dazu genutzt werden, das Aussehen und die Funktionalität bestimmter Webseiten zu verbessern. So lassen sich z.B. mit dem Google Image frame bypasser in der Google-Bildersuche die Vorschaubilder der Übersicht direkt mit den Bildern verlinken – der Schritt über die Webseite, die das Bild enthält, fällt weg. Eine Übersicht über Userscripts für Opera findet man auf userjs.org.

Die Installation funktioniert etwas anders als im Firefox. Zunächst erstellt man einen Ordner, in dem zukünftig alle Userscripts abgelegt werden. Dann schiebt man alle Skripte dort rein. In Opera wählt man unter Einstellungen / Erweitert / Inhalte / Java-Script den vorher festgelegten Ordner für die User-Scripts aus. Spätestens nach einem Neustart des Browsers müssten die neuen Funktionen dann zur Verfügung stehen.

Userjs.org wird leider seit längerem nicht mehr upgedatet, wer noch mehr Auswahl will, kann auch auf Greasemonkey-Skripte für Firefox zurückgreifen – einige davon laufen auch in Opera. Userscripts.org bietet tausende Scripts für Greasemonkey, eine Suche nach “Opera” ergibt immerhin über 250 Treffer. YouseableTubeFix ist z.B. auch für Opera erhältlich. Das Skript blendet auf Youtube Buttons zum Download der Videos, zur Einstellung der Player-Größe und zum Umschalten der Qualität (auf HD) ein und entfernt Werbung. Um YouseableTubeFix nutzen zu können, muss man die Datei in 36453.js umbenennen.

Ebenfalls empfehlenswert: Google FX nummeriert die Google-Suchergebnisse, fügt Thumbnails und Favicons hinzu, entfernt Werbung und fügt beim erreichen der untersten Suchergebnisse automatisch die nächste Seite an. Besser gehts kaum!

Edit: Die Einstellungen von Google FX kann auf der Google-Seite durch klicken auf das “FX” oder im Menü unter “Mehr” ändern.

When we search any keywords on Google engine, we normally see that on left side it’s showing relevant results based on your inputted keywords and right side some advertisements. When you need to digg more or need to check all the outcome (results) — we usually scroll down and down.

But we can make our time more productive to spend less time on Google engine. But how? You can see the google engine’s result in two column if you install a small scripts it’s called multi-column view of google search results. Just press alt+1 or alt+2 and your keyboard will make one or two columns in result pages.

Before to install this scripts, you should download firefox browser and then install this Greasemonkey add-ons to your browser and finally install this small scripts. Now, required to restart your browser and hopefully it will start working to your screen.

Just came across a Greasemonkey script for Last.Fm which allows you to work out your Landmark scrobbled tracks.

I must say, the whole Greasemonkey thing is relatively new to me – I’ve known about it and what it does etc for quite a while, however I’d not had chance to use it really! Since switching over to Mozilla’s Firefox as my main internet browser the other year (and considering moving over to Flock this year), I’ve been meaning to get more involved in it really, though I’ll have to be content with using other people’s published scripts for the time being as I am useless at writing in JavaScript myself – though I may give Platypus a try!

Greasemonkey’s Wiki gives a little more information on how Greasemonkey works and how to locate/install published scripts – usually they’re posted on http://userscripts.org -however you really should check the coding of any script before you download/install it!

Greasemonkey’s support website, Greasespot, also has plenty of information and support along with the all important link to the Greasemonkey add-in that you need to be able to use it on your open-source browser.

It’s also worth noting that on UserScripts there is an ‘Install’ button on the ‘About’ page for the script you’re looking at, which saves you from having to save the script down as a .user.jss file and re-load it into the Script Manager (which probably won’t allow the script to work properly either!).

Back to Landmark Tracks (follow the link for the script) – this script is basically a look-up table/what I’d term a ‘return script’ that can show you the artist and song that appears at any given number in your scrobbled song database.

Basically, through the Greasemonkey menu (on Firefox this is accessed via: Tools ->Greasemonkey->User Script Commands) I just gave the script a starting point of track zero and let it work it all out from there. I specified the play numbers that I was interested in and the script returned the result to me as BBCode so that I could insert them into my Last.Fm page.  By using BBCode, I could keep the nifty Last.Fm links to the artist/song pages as appropriate, however I could easily have just taken the text as it was and posted the text without any linking etc – as I have done above. My Last.Fm page shows the links with the BBCode/linking activated where available.

I’ll apologise right now for the output of my own Landmark Tracks – I wish that I’d listened to some more memorable tracks now!! The stats certainly seem to show some of my more eccentric musical tastes – oops!

In celebration of my belated installation of Greasemonkey and all of the HTML page customisation that I am now going to be able to do, I thought I’d post a clip of perhaps the most eccentric of my Landmarks, which would probably be play #3000 – The Houghton Weavers with Matchstick Men & Matchstick Cats and Dogs (in fairness, they were a band I saw when I was little and lived in a small village, AND L.S. Lowry is my absolute favourite artist!!).
