These t-shirts are a great example of what can be done with LED lighting. They are used to change the mood in a room, to light Christmas trees and a lot more! Has anyone else seen any great uses of LED lighting that they can point me to?

Um…I kinda don’t like cheesy themed posts…so my Halloween post is gonna be Five Weird Uses of Nail Polish.

1) If you paint those little paper cocktail umbrellas with clear nail polish, they become waterproof, like real umbrellas! Except tiny! Sooo practical.

2) Use it to seal envelopes. I’m actually allergic to that weird glue you have to lick to seal envelopes, but nail polish works perfect! Plus then the FBI can’t test for your spit on ransom notes. Bwahahaha!

3) Nail polish is my secret weapon on public transportation. I guess people don’t like the smell, or men don’t anyway. If someone creepy or rude is sitting next to me I will bust out the nail polish and they tend to move with disgusted looks on their faces. Suckers!

4) When you get little tears in your purse or shoes where the black is peeling off, fret not! A little black nail polish does the trick to cover it up and keep it from peeling more.

5) If you’re too lazy to hem something or sew up a seam, or you are working with a material that frays a lot, save yourself some grief and polish that shite. UPDATE: My mom added that it also works for stopping runs in tights. Good point!

There is a good possbility that you are wondering what tags are for and what categories are for. Good job for asking such an important question. I will discuss and define what tags and categories are and why you should use them in this post. I hope it is helpful.

Tags: A tag is a like a keyword that describes all or part of blog post. Now why would you want to attach a keyword to a post? The purpose when tagging a post or adding keywords is to attach your post to the keyword. A little redundant?? Think of when you are searching for information on the internet. Let say you are looking for information on flying monkeys and their eating habits. When you type this into your search engine any blog that has information about flying monkeys and their eating habits (that have been tagged) will pop up for your informational use. The reason is to help readers find information that they need, possibly information that you have on your post.

Category: A category is similar to a tag. It helps someone who is on the internet find the information that they are looking for. Categories are used as a organizer for your own blog. Once you or someone who is reading your blog has found your blog they are able to navigate the information easier through the categories. Think of categories as a table of contents of your blog.

Tags=helps you and others find information quicker

Categories=table of contents to navigate through your (or others blogs)

I’m just a girl at the bottom of the world, Waiting to be twirled And just to wait seems Nothi

I’m just a girl at the bottom of the world,

Waiting to be twirled

And just to wait seems

Nothing like dreams

Have ever been.

I got inspired to write something like this today during practice. The sky was so interesting. Clouds filled up almost all of the sky with some pale blue stretches, but it made me realize something: I’m not all that big. I mean, there are so many other people out there. Other girls. Other writers. Other band nerds. And I can’t keep waiting if I’m ever going to do anything. I have to finish my novel, I have to play my music in style. I can’t keep waiting around for something big to happen.

Earth is only one small planet in an entire Universe. It’s the only planet we know that can support life. And yet we don’t give it a bit of respect. We may never find another Earth.

I am one grain in the desert, one chloroplast in a tree, one human being out of six billion others. I’m the only person I know who can do the things I can do. I am individual. There may never be another me. However, I’m stagnant where I am. I need to do something to make my presence known. If I stay the invisible teenager on the side of the world, nothing will ever be changed. Unless I can evolve from my current state, I will never advance. I will remain just a girl who can write. And I can’t let that happen.

Mmmmmm sumac... Until a few years ago, I was completely ignorant of this wonderful red powder. Sumac

Mmmmmm sumac...

Until a few years ago, I was completely ignorant of this wonderful red powder. Sumac is made from the ground berries of a shrub (Rhus coriaria) and features a lot in Middle Eastern cuisine. The spice is used in several different ways, but it has a tangy, almost lemon-zest flavour so it can be used as a souring agent (much as we use lemon juice). Sumac works perfectly with meat because the sourness is accompanied by a nice, fruity, berry flavour. I often mix it in with marinades instead of lemon juice, before tossing the meat onto the barbie. It’s subtle enough not to overpower chicken, but it stands up pretty well with stronger flavours like lamb too. It can be sprinkled as a garnish onto hummus and other dips, it can even be used in place of lemon zest to give a different, but equally wonderful result .

Good sumac can be hard to track down. You are looking for a nice, dark red colour, rather than a brown and the sumac should have a fruity, berry smell. When you taste it, it should deliver way more than just a sour or salty taste (salt is used in the processing of sumac).

Find some, and start playing around with it in your kitchen. Sumac is really good!

Yes! I did it! The oil lamp! Here’s what the final looks like: Basically all the things you ne

Yes! I did it! The oil lamp! Here’s what the final looks like:

Basically all the things you need are:

1) Any glass jar

2) Some olive oil

3) A short piece of twine, about 5 cm

4) A small candle

5) A scissors

6) A needle or any sharp object

7) Water is optional =)

So here’s what to do:

Step 1: Fill a glass jar with some oil and water, as much as you want.

Step 2: Take a candle and remove the aluminium cap.

Try to keep the aluminium cap as intact as possible, we will be using it later.

When you flip the candle over, you can see the wick holder.

Step 3: Pull out the wick holder from the candle. Pull out the wick too, you’ll have to replace that with the twine.

Step 4: The wick holder will be clogged with wax, so use the needle to clear it.

Step 5: Take the twine and pull it through the wick holder. Pinch the wick holder so it clamps onto the twine. It will look something like this:

Try not to have more than 2 cm for the wick because the lamp will smoke if the wick is too long.

Step 6: Remember the aluminium cap? With the scissors, cut vertically at about 1 cm intervals all around the cap, and flatten it.

This is how it should look like flattened:

Step 7: Last step! Use the needle to poke a hole through the centre of the flattened aluminium cap. Thread the wick you had through this like the picture shows:

Put the completed wick into the lamp, light it, and you are done!

This should take about 15 minutes max. Really cheap too, I got the jar for $2, the candle was part of a large pack so I’ll guess around 10 cents, and the olive oil was leftover so I’ll estimate around $2? The whole oil lamp cost about $4.10 in total.

I spent some time experimenting with the wick before I found out that it needed the aluminium cap as a flotation device, else the oil extinguished the flame the moment I let go of the lighted wick. Here’s the two sites that inspired me to create this: Mother Earth News and Instructables. I modified their instructions a little to make it more convienient for myself, as I don’t have wire around the house and don’t feel like buying some. You can take a look at them to see why olive oil is a good choice and for tips on how to make it burn brighter.

Cool stuff!I finally have an oil lamp that I always wanted! Never liked wax – too messy and unsafe. I wouldn’t feel safe leaving a candle burning while I sleep, but this oil lamp feels safe enough. Do take note to keep it away from curtains and cloth though!

Bleh…It took me 15 minutes to make but more than an hour to blog about…Oh by the way, my next project will be to test out the corrosiveness of carbonic acid created by mixing baking soda and vinegar. As the combination is often touted as a earth-friendly remedy to clogged pipes and drains, I want to find out whether hair or dust will be corroded/dissolved in the resulting solution, as a way to prove its usefulness.

Till then! Cheers!

People differ by race and sex. Let’s look at a few profiling examples to see which ones you’d like outlawed. According to the American Cancer Society, the lifetime risk of men getting breast cancer is about 1/10th of 1 percent, or 1 in 1,000; and 440 men will die of breast cancer this year. For women, the risk of developing breast cancer is about 12 percent, or 1 in 8, and 40,610 will die from it this year. Should doctors and medical insurance companies be prosecuted for the discriminatory practice of routine breast cancer screening for women but not for men?

Some racial and ethnic groups have higher incidence and mortality from various diseases than the national average. The rates of death from cardiovascular diseases are about 30 percent higher among black adults than among white adults. Cervical cancer rates are five times higher among Vietnamese women in the U.S. than among white women. Pima Indians of Arizona have the highest known diabetes rates in the world. Prostate cancer is nearly twice as common among black men as white men.

Knowing patient race or ethnicity, what might be considered as racial profiling, can assist medical providers in the delivery of more effective medical services.

Here are some fun extra ways to use a camera. Do you know of others? I personally have used these to good effect. I want to take aerial photos using a large helium balloon. Ever done that?

6 Clever Camera Tricks
By Dave Johnson, PC World
Your digital camera or camera phone can help you inventory your belongings, remember where you parked the car and other practical things.

Photography can be a lot of things. For many people, it’s just fun to take and share snapshots, and to do silly things with them. In the past, I’ve talked about how to make collages, mock up a magazine cover and put yourself in a photo with Elvis. For others, photography is an art form. Take a look at the winner’s gallery of our weekly Digital Focus contest to see how seriously many people take their hobby.
This week I’ve got a list of unexpected, unconventional and perhaps clever ways to use your camera when you’re not busy photographing insects, weddings and alien encounters.
1. Insurance inventory
Remember how you’re supposed to have a thorough inventory of all the valuables in your house for insurance purposes? Photograph them. In the old days, that would have been a big undertaking, but not with a digital camera. You can even store all the photos on a memory card and throw it in your safe or lockbox.
2. Memory aid
How many times have you gotten lost in an unfamiliar place? I’m talking about forgetting your hotel room number or where you left your car in a big parking lot. This, my friends, is what the camera phone was invented for. Take a picture of the room number on your door. Photograph the parking lot marker post. You can refer to the picture when you return and zero in on your destination.
3. Shopping assistant
Have you ever sent your kids or spouse to the store and they returned with the wrong item? You can write down the name of the product, or you could snap a picture of it with their camera phone and send them off with a visual reference.
4. Portable scanner
You need someone’s class notes, perhaps, or need to make a copy of an important document — but you don’t have access to a flatbed scanner. No problem, just photograph it with your camera. With a utility like Snapter, you can even straighten and correct the document so it looks like it was scanned professionally.
5. Document a problem
My wife and I went to a concert last year and discovered that one of our assigned seats was broken — so broken, in fact, it was barely possible to sit in it. There was no staff to help us, so I photographed the chair disaster and contacted management the next day. We ended up getting a full refund for the show. Apply this basic idea to fender benders, damaged merchandise and any other glitch that comes you way.
6. Keep track of the little ones
I’m a bit uncomfortable including this one, but a friend suggested it. I have to admit it’s a good idea, though. When you take your young ones to a public event, snap a photo with your camera phone before you leave the house. If you get separated during the day, you have an exact record of what they look like and what they’re wearing.

Got grass stains? Soak the grass stain in vinegar for about a half an hour then launder as usual

Shower curtain liner looking nasty? Put in washing machine with a few towels and add a cup of vinegar, start the machine. Mildew and hard water marks will disappear!

Drains acting sluggish? Use this eco friendly treatment before it gets clogged: sprinkle baking soda down the drain, pour vinegar down the drain, after bubbles have stopped flush drains with hot water.

Pet accidents on carpet? Spraying vinegar on the spot will neutralize the ammonia in the urine and kill the odor.

Got azaleas or gardenias? Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to a qt. of water and water like this occasionally.

Lint clinging to dark clothes? Put a little bit of white vinegar in the final rinse to keep lint from clinging.

Ants on counter tops? Wash things as counter tops, cabinets, and floors with equal parts water and vinegar to get rid of them!

Dishes looking dingy? Use white vinegar instead of expensive rinse agents in your dishwasher detergent to make dishes sparkle. This will also work if you add 3 tablespoons to a bottle of dish liquid to make them shine.

Ceramic tile floors looking dull? Mop them with a mix of 1 gallon hot water to 1 cup vinegar. The floor will be clean and shiny. This works by removing the minerals the hot water will leave behind, which is responsible for the dulling.

Deodorant stains on clothes? Soak the stain in vinegar and then launder as usual.

To keep your washing machine running smooth: once a month run hot water cycle in an empty washing machine, add 1 gallon of vinegar to it and let it run the cycle. This flushes out all the hoses and removes minerals to keep it running like new.

Got a stuck screw or bolt? An acid, such as vinegar, applied to the screw or bolt can replace penetrating oil in a pinch.

To set in bright or dark colors: add 1 cup of vinegar to the washing machine water the first time you wash clothing to set the colors.

Anyone have any that they want to add to the list feel free to add in a comment or by email! If you have a particular item or subject that you would like to see in an upcoming tip post send it to me, and i’ll see what brainstorming we can do for it.Have a great weekend everyone!

My little guy, Quentin, will be turning 3 this weekend too, and we are halfway thru conquering potty training!!! I am so excited over this, my baby is turning into a little boy!
