How do I feel about USG ending for the semester?

Happy? Sad? Or somewhere in between? As exasperating as USG is sometimes, what with all the undergraduate upsets and financial wrangling, the uncommunicative but “open” senators and late-night meetings, it does have its charm. There are senators who are the earnest, burgeoning statesman, high-achievers and those who try really, really hard. They do do work and their productivity is noteworthy. This is not frustrating. The most frustrating aspect of the USG is that students complain about the USG but do not act.

As critical as I am of the USG’s practices, I do admire the time and effort senators put into drafting legislation and pushing initiatives.

Sure, they get paid but the work they do is not easy by any measure. They need an office and a staff to function. They need money to function

In these financially trying times, it is understandable why students get upset about how the USG spends money. Though many student complain that the USG is a corrupted institution, few students realize that they can influence the process. The senators are students first and they will listen to their peers. In fact, it is good for senators to realize that students care.

It reminds the senators that they represent their peers and are not making decisions for a student body who don’t give a damn. The lack of student involvement, not senatorial overinvolvement, is the problem with USG.

I don’t mean to write a love letter to the USG but I do think they deserve credit where credit is due.

D : Santai aja yah…jangan makan sate kambing ma durian dulu (sambil bersalaman ma hubby en aku)

Cabuts deh dengan saling lempar senyum ke hubby…Yah gitu ceritanya feelingku gak salah kan sebulan lalu klo emang gak mual2 aku syukuri ajah mungkin emang tiap org punya kondisi beda-beda.

Do’ain Ibu dan si dede sehat di dalem ya temans…makasih buat supportnya.

Zawędrowałam dziś do szpitala. Lekarka zrobiła mi też USG i KTG.

continued from NYPIRG Strikes Back, Part Un…

Had NYPIRG used USG funds outside of SBU, they would be subject to legal action. Established on SBU campus in 1979, NYPIRG was funded by various incarnations of SBU’s student governments, including Polity and the USG before it lost USG funding. During the November 13 Senate meeting, NYPIRG’s On-Campus Coordinator Brendan U. Colling argued for the necessity of approving the contract as soon as possible.

At the time, the sub-committee had not finalized the contract.

“We can’t consider a vote on the contract,” said Senator Syed Haq, a member of the drafting committee. Khan said the committee’s extensive efforts to create a comprehensive contract with NYPIRG were the reason that an agreement had been reached, effectively ending the two year stalemate. Though the contract does have to be renewed every year, Khan said efforts were made to make sure the contract is as thorough as possible so it will not have to be revised.

Colling echoed these sentiments and added that NYPIRG will be recruiting students at SBU soon.

A week after the contract was first brought to the floor, some amendments were made to clarify the language of the contract by the sitting Senate and the contract was put to a vote.

After extensive talking with our lawyer, we addressed every single concern. They are a good organization to have on campus.—Treasurer Matthew Anderson.

The stock market ended a three-day losing streak Monday, closing broadly higher as a weaker dollar and upbeat home sales numbers encouraged investors to take on more risk.

Major stock indexes soared more than 1 percent, including the Dow Jones industrials, which rose 133 points to a 13-month high. Volume was light as Thanksgiving approached, and that likely padded some of the market’s advance. (headline & commentary courtesy of AP)

Today’s market action sent many of RSI’s picks higher. The two exceptions are RJN and USG with small fractional losses. The rest did quite well with RZY turning in a 2.45% gain followed by RSX with 1.95%. On balance a nice showing.

I have mentioned my job jar. I have added items to the list:

Adding to the position – One of the features of the Turtle trading system is winning trades were increased in size under established criteria. The Turtle system is a trend following system and if the trend is profitable you pile on more shares. I need to see if this strategy adds value for RSI.

Trailing Stops – I really need to give this another shot since I believe this will enhance returns by not taking profits too early. On an earlier blog I discussed this and ended up with a stop loss level and profit target. I need to reassess this criteria since I have some strong funds that are approaching their targets. I don’t want to leave any serious money on the table.

I need to republish my job jar list and keep you apprised as to my progress. Another job jar item??

RSI had no new picks today. Kind of like watching paint dry.

alhamdulillah..
udah 38 minggu bunda hamil sampe ke perkiraan lahirnya anak bayi bunda, gk sampe 2 minggu lagi tapi, anak bunda udah kuat koq kalo mau lahir sebelum tanggal perkiraan itu.. anak bunda kan jagoan ya Sayang

sejak minggu lalu… jadwal kontrolnya bunda makin padat.. ayah sampe 2 kali gk masuk kuliah karena harus nganter bunda ke rumah sakit karena bukan sekedar kontrol biasa yg dokter nempelin alat doppler ke perutnya bunda buat denger detak jantungnya bayi

Jumat lalu, 13 November,

Senin, 16 Nov

kali ini bunda periksanya bukan di Family Practice, tapi di Middlesex Hospital lantai 3… lantai khusus untuk semua persiapan lahiran dan ruangan bayi janji awalnya jam 9.30 pagi, tapi ayah-bunda agak telat, baru sampe sana 9.45 ketemu sama suster, terus langsung ditunjuk salah satu ruangan buat ayah-bunda tunggu dokternya dateng, plus buat monitor detak jantung bayi dan kontraksinya bunda plus USG juga untuk liat keadaan cairannya

begitu masuk ruangan.. bunda langsung disuruh tiduran di kasur periksa… perutnya bunda langsung ditempelin sama 2 alat detektor, yg satu untuk monitor detak jantung bayi.. yg satunya lagi untuk ngeliat kontraksinya bunda terus ditangannya bunda ditempelin alat untuk ukur tensi pokoknya badannya bunda penuh sama alat-alatnya dokter

abis ituh ditinggal sama susternya… suster tanya bunda mau dibawain apa.. bunda minta aer putih aja susternya keluar kamar, terus masuk lagi bawain bunda air putih yg dikasih es… enak deh dingin dingin seger dikasih sedotan juga biar bunda gampang minumnya

Jumat, 20 nov

kayaknya hari-hari cepet banget… baru kmaren ketemu dokter, udah dateng lagi hari buat jadwalnya ketemu dokter hari ini, kontrolnya di Family Practice, sama dokter Ozbek… dokter yg biasa kontrol kali ini, bunda bakal di- USG, lagi-lagi buat ngeliat kadar cairan yg ada didalem rahimnya bunda, cairan yg dijadiin mainannya anaknya bunda kali ini, perut bunda gk ditempelin alat untuk monitor kontraksi dan detak jantung, cuma doppler biasa ajah yg buat dengerin detak jantungnya bayi… hasilnya doppler, alhamdulillah bagus

lampu kamar periksa dimatiin, terus perutnya bunda dikasih jeli… alat USG nya mulai dinyalain… keliatan deh anaknya bunda tp kayakna masih bobok tuh, dipegang-pegang sm dokternya biar ada gerakan dikit, dibangunin gitu sama dokternya…

ketauan deh klo skarang anak bayi bangunnya siang terus hayoo, brarti besok-besok gk boleh bobok terlalu malem lagi ya Sayang… malu kan ketauan sama dokter masih bobok

haduuh… dokternya sampe ketawa ngeliat tingkah lakunya anak bunda ayah juga gemes ngeliatnya pokoknya tingkahnya ngegemesin deh

The USG Senate approved its contract with advocacy group NYPIRG by a unanimous vote after nearly two

The USG Senate approved its contract with advocacy group NYPIRG by a unanimous vote after nearly two years of negotiations. The contract, drafted by a budget subcommittee, stipulated that the USG would be able to audit NYPIRG’s spending, a right the USG did not have in the past and, in turn, led the USG to remove NYPIRG’s funding, said Senator Moiz Khan. Until the November 19 Senate meeting, NYPIRG had not received financial support from the USG since 2007.

I am glad we can get to work– Chairperson of NYPIRG’s Board of Directors Patrick Krug.

According to its website, NYPIRG is a non-profit, student-directed, environmental and government reform organization. On 20 college campuses across the state, NYPIRG promotes and teaches students how to be activists. Though NYPIRG’s mission statement on SBU campus was not in question, its financial structure was seen as suspect by the USG. As a state-wide organization, it is completely unlike any other student-run entity funded by the USG, said Senator Moiz Khan. Though NYPIRG at SBU acts like a club in that it must follow the USG constitution, pay for office space and should receive USG funding, its ultimate authority is in Albany, not in SAC 202.

Two years ago, NYPIRG’s USG funding was withheld because the USG was unable to ascertain whether NYPIRG was spending USG money at SBU exclusively or if NYPIRG was using USG money on other campuses, said Khan. NYPIRG is obligated to send their original receipts to the IRS, not to the USG.

We want to make sure our money is going to us. We shouldn’t be paying for someone’s salary up in Binghamton–Khan

Though the committee that drafted USG’s contract with NYPIRG discovered that if NYPIRG used USG funds thusly, NYPIRG would be subject to legal action; NYPIRG had not distributed USG funds state-wide, said Khan.

Wherefore art thou, SBU-TV? I used to have a buddy covering USG. He filmed the Senate meetings every Thursday. This semester, he is gone and so is SBU-TV’s camera.

This is a problem because a) SBU-TV allows students to watch meetings if they were unable to attend and b) SBU-TV is an agency of the USG.

Being a USG agency is more limiting than being a club because agencies are under the direct control of USG and are supposed to be managed by USG.

Months ago, Vice President of Communication and Public Relations David Mazza said he hoped to get SBU-TV back in the meetings but said that communication between USG and SBU-TV had been poor of late.

In the intervening months, there is no SBU-TV at the meetings and SBU’s TV station is not only violating their bureaucratic obligation to film USG Senate meetings but is also failing to serve their community.

With SBU-TV filming Senate meetings, there was an air of transparency and filmed evidence of the government trying to reach out to the students and the press. Yet, senators have generally become more open to speaking to the press.

This openness running parallel to the end of Senate broadcasts is quite contradictory. The USG needs to take some sort of conclusive stand on how they address its own coverage.

As a journalist, one is supposed to be the first at an event and the last to leave, however long that event might be. This would perfectly explain the time-warp that occurred on Thursday night when I arrived at 8 for an 8:30 meeting and left at 10:45. First, the meeting was delayed because of room overbooking, then objections abounded during approval of the minutes. Then, there was a presentation by the Center for Prevention and Outreach about H1N1. Then, Treasurer Matt Anderson insisted listing the revised budgets for all of the clubs who had requested more money from USG. Then, a Payroll Act was approved. Then, open agenda. A phenomenal number of issues were discussed and much was accomplished but all of the efforts to streamline debate were nonexistent.

As a journalist who has been covering the USG beat for a year, the workings of the beast a pretty evident and as are its malfunctions. I feel tempted to shout out advice, even if it would break constitutional protocol. Then I remember that I am but an observer who is the first there and the last to leave.

It’s an important beat, even if it isn’t the most exciting one. They have a two and a half million dollar budget. Doesn’t that sound interesting?

They control which clubs receive funding. Isn’t that cool?

They represent you, the student body? Don’t you want to know how they are representing you?

No. The journalists who covered USG were there for an assignment. They had to cover a public meeting for their JRN 111. And their attendance was so characteristic of the relationship between the USG and the student body. Students only find themselves at the Senate meeting if they are compelled to be there.

Perhaps they will stick around and a genuine USG press corps would develop. Perhaps a general awareness of USG would develop. Perhaps students would then become involved.

Perhaps…

USG Senate’s approval of an act that created a staff for the vice president of Student Life, Program

USG Senate’s approval of an act that created a staff for the vice president of Student Life, Programming and Activities nearly fizzled into a filibuster twice during the November 5 USG Senate meeting. The Office of Student Life, Programming and Activities Act stipulates that the vice president of Student Life, Programming and Activities can have an unspecified number of paid agents to act as his proxies during administrative meetings and manage paperwork for up to 20 hours per week. The act was approved by twelve votes, with two votes against the act and five abstentions.

Vice President Student Life, Programming and Activities Keith Tilley, a fifth year Political Science and Philosophy student, proposed the act and argued that the requirements of the office, as written in the constitution, were too demanding for any official to fulfill within any given week without the help of agents. Apart from the addition of assistants, Tilley proposed stricter financial oversight of Roth Regatta and Brookfest, both of which are campus-wide student events funded by USG.

The proposed act was tacked immediately with an amendment and a side of senatorial dissent.

The amendment to the act, presented by Senator Daniel Graber, wanted to eliminate passages of the act that had been copied from the USG Constitution with regards to the scope of vice president responsibilities and agent employment. Tilley argued that because the passages of the Office of Student Life, Programming and Activities Act were nearly exact echoes of the USG Constitution and should remain intact. The Senate voted down the amendment by twelve votes, with six in favor and one abstention.

Apart from the attempted amendment, Senator Runyu Fan said Tilley’s proposal for a paid staff to help him manage the responsibilities was a way to for Tilley to shirk the responsibilities of his office.

So [the responsibilities of the VP of Student Life, Programming and Activities] are too much to handle? There are too many agents, that means you are avoiding your job.–Fan

The vice president of Student Life, Programming and Activities oversees the Student Activities Board, sits on the University Senate Committee for Student Life and must have frequent meetings with Dean of Students Jerrold L. Stein and various administrators and manage ALERT, the program which provides low-price LIRR tickets to students. Tilley said he knew the terms of his office when he was elected but the requirements were impossible to fulfill and would have to be changed.

“There are just so many hours in a week,” said Tilley. “[The Office of Student Life, Programming and Activities Act] is what I came up with.”

Vice President of Academic Affairs Shamell Forbes lent his support to the creation of Tilley’s office and staff. Other USG offices, like that of the Treasurer and the vice presidents of Academic Affairs and Communications and Public Relations have agents to help manage their officer’s workload.

“The office needs a staff,” said Forbes. “The act doesn’t reflect the person, it reflects the position.”

Previous vice presidents of Student Life, Programming and Activities had been impeached because of their inability to manage the manifold responsibilities of the office as stipulated in the USG Constitution.

Tilley assured that the Senate that it will have oversight power and control the number of agents that could be hired and paid. He also assured that agents would not be paid for more than 20 hours of work and that only four of these hours could be spent out of the office, attending relevant committee meetings.

Senator Aneta Bose found fault in Tilley’s need for paid assistants. Bose, a member of SAB, opposed Tilley’s proposed sending of paid agents to SAB meeting which are open to the student body.

“I don’t think you need to attend meetings,” said Bose. “I don’t think anyone should be paid for attending SAB meetings. Nobody gets paid for it.”

Tilley asserted that he, as vice president of his office, is required to SAB meetings and is paid for it as per the USG Constitution. Though the Senate ultimately ruled in favor of Tilley’s act, the floor was dominated by debate over the act and its amendment in excess of half an hour. Senator Syed Haq called debate to question for both the amendment to the act and the act itself, which forced the end of debate and a vote.

Newly-elected Senator Deborah Machalow said Haq feared that the Senate would be mired in debate without a result, forcing discussion to continue late into the night. Machalow said she supported the Office of Student Life, Programming and Activities Act.

“If [Tilley’s] job is easier, then he will attend to student needs much easier,” said Machalow.

This past USG Senate meeting, the newly-elected USG representative and senators took to legislative proceedings like fish to water. Fresh senators motioned and voted. Representatives and vice presidents filed their executive council reports. Their actions appeared seasoned and didn’t bear the signs of first-time bureaucratic shock. This is due in no small part to Executive Vice President John Kriscinski’s continuing efforts to educate his legislators in proper Senate procedures. The Tuesday after the election results were announced, the newly elected were trained by Krascinski and received the binders for storing and keeping past and new legislation. All equipped, these new officials should function efficiently and make the USG a highly functional institution…

The representatives, senators and vice president would do well not to get to comfortable. There is a certain benefit to being green in USG. Newbies’ ideas and ideals are purer. Not knowing the difficulty of the terrain makes a place of ripe possibility and reform. And we do need reform.

So, be green, little legislators. The more acclimated you get, the more likely you are to become inaccessible inside the bureaucratic hothouse.

Tapi masuk minggu ke-10, i gain my energy back!

Sementara soal ngidam, mulai ngidam standar: rujak! Rasanya enak banget makan rujak, asem2 seger gitu. Bumbunya sengaja minta yang ga terlalu pedes supaya ga sakit perut, dan masih belom berani makan nanas.

Tapi susah banget rasanya menghindari gorengan.

Gw dan Yunan udah was-was aja, bayinya ga keliatankah dok? Huhu.

Ternyata ngga, bayinya sehat, dan sekarang ukurannya udah 3,64 cm. *nangis*

He/she look like dancing. Owh. *nangis lagi*

Sementara gue? Ya pengen sih, tapi

Dari pertama married, Yunan udah ngebet banget pengen punya anak. Sementara gue? Ya pengen sih, tapi somehow masih ada rasa-rasa takut, am i ready? Ini hamil loh, bukan makan kepiting! (iya, emang jauh)

Sebenernya sih bukannya pengen cepet-cepet atau gimana, tapi pengen make sure nothing’s wrong with me or him.

Sediiiiiiiiiiiih bener.

Sejak saat itu kita berhenti berharap terlalu banyak, sampe akhirnya gw telat mens lagi. 10 hari telat, nyoba tespek. Negatif lagi. Meskipun demikian tetep ngarep, dan berencana tespek lagi setelah dua minggu telat. Di hari yang ke-12, gw mens. Huaaaaaaaaaa….

Well, gw sempet menjalani terapi refleksi, katanya usus gw turun dan menekan rahim, makanya jadi agak susah punya anak. Ya udah pasrah ajalah ya, yang penting sembuh aja dulu.

Sekitar dua bulan lebih setelah merayakan satu tahun perkawinan, kita dapet kabar kalo temen gw yang SEBULAN lalu baru merit, sekarang udah hamil! Damn you, Kiva! Haha. Ternyata oh ternyata, my hubby bought me test pack.

A: LIAT INIIII!!! *sambil mangap2*

Y: apa iniiii???? *melotot*

A: GARISNYA DUAAA!! Eh, itu garis kan? Itu garis bukan?

Y: *speechless sambil mangap*

A&Y: masa siiihhhhh????

Kita berdua pegangan tangan, sangat excited. Tiba2 ngantuk ilang, tapi selera makan tetep (ya iyalah). Beneran gaaaa?????

Siangnya kita berdua langsung mengunjungi dokter kandungan terdekat. Pertama di-USG perut, ga keliatan apa2. terus USG trans-v, dokter nemu kista.

Daann…the long-waiting unborn pun keliatan!

It was just a super tiny dot, Cuma 3,8 mm, yang kelap-kelip di layar USG. My hubby and i was like, oh my God this is real!

*jeda sejenak untuk nangis*

On the other hand, dokter juga nemuin kista berukuran 5,9 cm di rahim sebelah kiri.

Sejak saat itu, my life has changed! Haha.

Though it may seem that the USG Senate reigns supreme in the undergraduate fishbowl, it is but a kil

Though it may seem that the USG Senate reigns supreme in the undergraduate fishbowl, it is but a killy compared to other organizations which manage student life and welfare at SBU. This hierarchy of bureaucratic puissance was made clear by Senator Aharon Eliezar Benelyahoo when he offered himself as a liaison between the USG Senate and the Faculty Student Association (FSA). The FSA is a twelve member committee composed of eight faculty members and four students. This committee makes decisions ranging from which food provider will be used on campus to the management of the Seawolves Market Place.

“Anything and everything comes through the [FSA] Board of Directors,” said Benelyahoo, who is one of the four student members on the Board of Directors.

USG President Jasper Wilson similarly stressed the importance of strong USG/FSA relations after meeting with FSA Director Kevin Kelly. Wilson encouraged senators to appeal to the FSA is they are unhappy with any aspect of student life.

FSA is the direct path to get stuff change. FSA is, like, a really powerful organization–Wilson

In Spring 2009, FSA’s evaluation of Chartwells Food Service, the campus dining provider, led to the nonrenewal of SBU’s contract with the Chartwells. FSA decided not to continue its contract with Chartwells after widespread student complaints about food quality and cost.

FSA also brokered the deal with Lackmann Culinary Services and assured students of better dining options in the future.

At the end of the meeting, Benelyahoo again stressed the importance of the FSA in controlling the quality of student life. He encouraged senators to propose ideas to him for ameliorating on campus concerns. In turn, Benelyahoo said he would pass these suggestions on to the FSA Board of Directors.

“If you have a good enough argument and I can argue it, it will get done,” said Benelyahoo.

SBU students suck at voting.

Of the 14,000 undergraduates, voter turnout rarely toes beyond 2,000. And that’s in the Spring, when people are actually aware of elections.

In the Fall, with few high profile seats open, voter turnout is a fraction of a fraction.

This election cycle, however, there is a high-octane USG seat that remains open and needs to be filled in order for USG to function regularly.

The vice president of Student Life, Programming and Activities seat presides over the Student Activities Board, which owns your entertainment.

So, when you don’t’ like campus events, you should complain to the USG. Even better, you should complain to the vice president of Student Life, Programming and Activities.

Oh, right. You are complacent. Why am I even talking about this?

The most pitiful bit of this electoral laziness is that students don’t have to go into voting booths or take time out of their day. A student can vote on his SOLAR homepage. Click. Done. Apparently not.

Wolfie Wants YOU...to, um, Vote

Perhaps, y’all would prefer some shadowy Oz figure to pick the vice president of Student Life, Programming and Activities. Then, the voters wouldn’t be responsible when discontent abounds, when Dora the Explorer plays SBU, when a hundred thousand dollars is spent on a bubble wrap party which 20 people attend. But students are responsible for the leaders they elect, however inconvenient it may be.

Sorry, guys. We don’t live in a Stalinist system.

Too bad for you.

Vote.
