I got two postcards today from Sita!! What I love about getting mail in USM hostel is they deliver them right to your room doorstep (exception for registered mail and parcel)! I feel sorry though for the delivery personnel – whoever she is – for having to climb to my room in floor 3 only to send a piece of postcard. And I’ll be more sorry as probably soon she’ll have to be coming here more often since I recently started swapping postcards again, and playing tags, all giving the hostel address and the fact that I’ve just changed my address on Postcrossing to hostel address!! HAHAHA but well, at least I have something to praise on USM this time ) Compared to UIA while I was living there, they didn’t have any kind personnel to deliver mail to doorstep, rather they provided this shared mailboxes near the cafetaria, the boxes are labelled alphabetically A-Z, so I needed to get my mail from the box with letter I. In fact, I visited the mailbox everyday after class to get my daily mail. However, since the mailbox was shared, everyone can literally access your mailbox, and perhaps steal the stamps off your postcards as well, and even souvenir from your envelope! Yep, that did happen to be honest, so that’s why I wasn’t using UIA hostel address on Postcrossing for too long before I changed to home address back, even though I had to bear waiting until I went home to see my mail!

Panoramic cards! Top: Shey Palace, built in 1655. Bottom: Stok Kangri Range in Hemis National Park.

And since imajica’s postcards blog has been put into eternal rest since I came to Penang and I am not likely to update there anymore in near future, I guess I’ll just blog about my postcards in here coz in case you haven’t noticed, I made a new category: “What I got in the mail” specifically to show off postcards and stuff I received all this while via Postcrossing and from my friends all over the world. Hmm I know, I know, if you check the category now it’s currently full with panties pictures, sorry =_= even though I put probably only 10% of my total received foreign panties… will make it more variety, with many other souvenirs I got like magnets, bags, porcelain, fabrics, teas, etc etc.

Okay, I don’t have scanner here to neatly scan my postcards as I did for postcards blog, but it’s okay, cameraphone still comes handy! I have probably got about 30 India postcards from Sita all this while (seriously!) and if you’re curious why I have received so many Indian postcards, first is because Sita is soooooo kind to me! And second is I always have a long lasting love for India as far as I can remember which I can’t tell why. Okay, I’m telling if you insist: probably since I knew Owais from Madhya Pradesh, who was technically the first guy I had a virtual crush on. LOL. It’ was many many years ago and in fact by the time received my first India postcard on Postcrossing I had no longer heard from him for ages. Nevermind. But I so much want to visit India one day, and see Taj Mahal before my eyes This is what I’m planning a little, probably I want Sita to be my host, and since AirAsia goes India too, so it’s not that impossible. Who knows, a gift to myself after I graduated, or after I got my first salary next year? Hopefully.

Indian bag and mobile purse

I am happy to show off these gifts I received from Sita in previous years which I happen to be using right now in here. The wallet with elephant print is really convenient now whenever I need to bring out only money and phone coz all just fit into it. And the elegant mobile phone purse – is my favorite too! Sita actually sent me two(!) mobile purses but I lost one – when I brought to Masjidil Haram in Makkah the other year! Too pity, but I was glad somehow my phone didn’t get lost along with its purse. Anyway, thanks Sita for all the cards and gifts you have sent me all this time, you’re really the best!!!

Product Description

The EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens could very well be the essential multipurpose lens for every camera bag due to its ability to capture sharp close-up images of small objects as well as beautiful portrait-length telephoto shots. The incorporation of Canon’s new Hybrid IS in this L-series macro lens allows it to compensate more effectively for camera shake during close-up shooting and marks a significant improvement for professionals and advanced amateurs utilizing macro photography for portrait, nature or wedding shoots. New Hybrid IS Technology: Designed Especially for Macro Photography The world’s first* optical image stabilizer for SLR cameras was introduced in the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM in 1995. Since then, Canon has made continual advancements in IS systems to enhance panning capability and improve compensation for camera shake. Now, in a move aimed at extending image stabilization to the macro realm, Canon introduces its Hybrid IS in the new EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM another first for Canon and the world. Conventional image stabilization technology is useful for reducing the effects of camera shake in non-macro shooting situations. When shooting handheld close-ups at 1x, however, camera shake makes it difficult to achieve acceptable results even with lenses incorporating conventional image stabilizers. Now, thanks to the Hybrid IS found in the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, Canon extends IS technology to the macro realm, making it easy to obtain clear handheld close-ups a world first* and a definite advantage in environments where use of a tripod is not an option.

Therefore the postponed lunch finally happened the other week recently And it was my first time eating Korean barbecue and steamboat buffet at Seoul Garden.

Seoul Garden in Autocity

And it was my first time being in Autocity too, in fact.. (oh yeah, now you must be thinking I have really been living in a jungle for one whole semester and never went out to see civilization.. hm, maybe it’s half true). It’s about 20 minutes away from our campus via PLUS highway. And you can say, for someone who has left KL for a year and never been any near to big city ever since, and has almost turned into a cave-man inside her deserted campus in the middle of palm estate.. Autocity is like wonderland! Many decent restaurants (and fast-foodies) are sitting side by side, well perhaps I’ll make a separate post about Autocity for future Penang Spotlight entry Coz now I’m saving space to tell you about my class party only.

Have it Korean style

Here’s the hot plate, or whatever you call it, where you use to cook steamboat nuggets and grill meats of many choices of spices and kinds. And soup choices too. So convenient really, since everything is in bite-size so the food can easily go from the plate right to your mouth. Well, in case you need a plate, they do serve plates, don’t worry, and many of them actually, and the service people do their good job really, to keep changing your plates and even change the hot plate too, soon it gains stains of burnt meats (because of too busy eating…).

Choices of meats (constantly restocked). And plates, too.

Besides the barbecue and steamboat, there are variety of salads and fruits, desserts, ice-cream, and soft drink. Yeah, I think that’s all. The buffet lunch time is from 12pm to 4pm (plus minus, I am not that sure either, coz we left by 3pm and we were too full already). Bring your student card so you can get a discounted price of RM25.10.

Class photo after lunch. Hmm.. a few people missing though

More photos of happy people eating and camwhoring can be seen in my Facebook album, and Fauzi’s.

Yesterday evening I realized the lamp of my study table is broken. And today my roommate, who once had her table lamp replaced months ago, told me that I should go report at the hostel office.

But can’t we just make a call to tell them? I got the number, anyway. Not that the office is very far away, but well, I’m in the room at floor 3 and lazying around in my bed at 3.30pm and didn’t feel like going out at this hour. Maybe later I would, then again the office would be closed by then. So I decided to make a call.

Me: Hello..?

Her: Lembaran hostel..

Me: I want to make a report that my table lamp is not functioning..

Her: You have to come down to the office

Me: But…

Her: *slams down the phone*

Me: …..

*shrugs*.. I mean.. what the benefit that they invented telephone then, if you can’t talk or settle things via phone?? And what’s her job anyway, isn’t it answering phone calls? And aren’t that supposed to include, reports, complain, emergency etc, and DEAL with them? And and.. even if her job isn’t merely answering phone, it should only take less than a minute to write down my report or any necessary details in the form papers.. so that the relevant personnels could come up changing my lamps quickly! Yeah! Compare to the time that it should take me to wake up from my bed, change cloth, walk down the building, unlock the bicycle, cycling to the office, walk up to the office, until I the moment I can show my face at the counter. It could have been much faster if she takes my report via phone! Well, unless she doesnt know how to write.

Why make things so complicated???????

So yeah, it’s 8pm and I haven’t gone to the office to make the bloody report.

This morning went out for a jogging. With roommates and Bunny.

Bike and Bunny

One round cycling around the campus, followed by exercising here in the ‘gym’.

Here again

Since it’s actually been one whole semester since I last made a getting-to-know post about USM (part 1), I was thinking if I could get some more views of this deserted campus surrounded by palm trees and make another getting-to-know-more post.

This is where I go to classes.

CEDEC

Okay, so CEDEC stands for Collaborative micro-Electronic Design Excellence Centre but it’s not where I work actually Since it’s practically in the building of School of EEE, and I get to see this side first so I took the picture as well. But the main entrance should be this one:

School of EEE. Very terribly ugly building, I know. Even the existence of Bunny in the pic doesn't help much.

I won’t go show you my classrooms and labs. Maybe next time. I won’t go show buildings of other schools either.. coz I am lazy and it’s not much important anyway in this post.

Next of our building is this building with a dome.

Islamic Center cum mosque

This campus is surrounded by palm estate (that gives unpleasant smell sometimes during midnight, and the existence of this species insect called Charlie you may find in your rooms and bathrooms) and this place is rather new I guess. The campus itself was opened in 2001 since being moved from its previous campus in Tronoh, Perak (the very site where Universiti Teknologi Petronas is now located). See this wikimapia layout for brighter idea of how scary and deserted this place is.

Yup, my bike got fixed and fantastic.

I was meaning to take pics of more places and buildings inside the campus.. though there are not many of them anyway.. but once you get your hands grasping the bike handlebars cycling freely with the wind.. it’s so uncool to make stops anymore.

Oh hmm btw here’s my Kelisa again.. remember? The buddy who was accompanying me during final year in UIA, and when I was living in KL the other year. I’m glad I got Kelisa with me again this semester after a while of absence.. so I will no longer be tard bored..

After 1 year.. the only missing thing about Kelisa now is the fact that Haris isn’t inside it hanging on the mirror no more.. coz right now Haris is hibernating in cold Macedonia.. and will be going to Slovenia next.

I’m reposting the following article because one of the areas I am working with in my own personal expansion is “Asking For What You Want”. As I was reading My Grandfather’s Blessings last night, a particular chapter talked about the author’s experience of having fractured her leg during her medical internship. Despite her close contact with a slew of physicians, nurses, and other heathcare professionals, not a single one of her colleagues asked what had happened or offered a supportive word. That’s because the medical community was (and likely still is) focusing on fixing weakness rather than healing. Rachel Naomi Remen goes on to explain how it is precisely in our moment of vulnerability that we are most able to connect with one another, soul to soul, and experience healing and growth.

One of the Basic Communication Skills that we studied in my Master’s program at The University of Santa Monica was entitled, “Asking For What You Want.” We not only practiced how, as a counselor, to evoke and encourage this powerful behavior in a client. We also practiced doing it ourselves. I was surprised to see how many of my classmates, myself included, had been trained out of this very natural behavior.

If you’re looking for a role model to practice Asking For What You Want, I suggest a child of about 4 years old. Watch how effortlessly and with remarkable trust they ask for what they want. At their best, it is neither a demand nor an expectation nor a plea. It is a request from one person to another, and while the answer remains a mystery, excitement and anticipation blossom. This little person does not worry about what you will think of him when he asks, or assume that he should be able to do it all by himself. He asks because it is in his heart to ask. Sadly, we adults have built some strange mechanisms for filtering these natural wishes. We could all use a little practice and a few tips to get back into the habit of asking, authentically, for help and support.

Finally, I’ll leave you with an idea to consider about the value of asking. When you ask for what you want, free of expectation and in acceptance of the outcome either way, you are giving the other person an opportunity to give and serve. The natural result of service is gratitude and joy. Service, rather than taking up energy, is a self-replenishing process. It is through our willingness to do that we are given our abilities to do. Every time you ask someone for what you want, you open your heart to receive and offer them an opportunity to experience true joy.

Enjoy Michael’s tips below:

Six and a Half Steps to Ask for Help

…without being a wimp or a brute

Do you remember the final Great Work Truth? Great Work is not a solo act.

Sage advice, and I only wish I could follow it better myself.

The last few months have been fascinating (sort of) as I’ve watched myself struggling to ask for help – or if I do ask, struggling to ask for it well.

As I’m preparing to ask you, dear reader, for help in making Do More Great Work a success, I thought I’d lay out my best guesses on how to do this and do it well.

So here we go – the best I can offer you about asking for help.

1. Get clear you’re going to ask for help.

Two things get in the way.

One, the suspicion that you’re actually omnipotent and you should be able to do all of it yourself. Any asking of help would be a sign of weakness, a sign of deficiency, would put you in a place of vulnerability and debt.

Or two, the certain knowledge that asking for help would put an unbearable burden on the other person and as you are not only deeply responsible but also highly protective of all those around you, you won’t ask as it will generate not only resentment in the other but quite possibly life-scarring wounds.

Forget it.

It’s not that you can’t do a whole lot by yourself. Of course you can.

it’s just that you can do so much more with the help of others.

So get over your shyness, your anxiety, your ego, your sense of responsibility.

Accept that you need help.

2. Get clear on who could help you most.

Actually, it would be good if this could be the point before the first point. Because the truth is, it’s much easier to ask for help from someone you have a relationship with or someone you’ve helped out yourself before. (For more on this see Influence:The Psychology of Persuasion.)

So start with people you know, people with whom you’e connected before. They might be friends or family. They might be work colleagues, or people you know on Twitter, or the next door neighbours.

Who could you ask for help?

And after you’ve scanned that cluster of people, expand your horizons.

If you could ask anyone (yes, anyone) in the world for help, for support, to get involved – who would you ask?

One of the most marvellous things about the Great Work Interview series is that I have actually plucked up the courage to ask people who I most want to interview. David Allen. Guy Kawasaki. Mike Dooley. Michael Neill…. It’s a long list (there’s lots of people to be admired out there – see the next section of the newsletter). The wonderful and revealing thing to me is that 90% of the people I’ve asked have said yes, and said yes quickly and graciously. And the few who’ve said no have been equally gracious.

3. Be light, be humble, be gracious.

Finding the right tone to make the request can be everything.

On one side of the abyss is the grovelly, snivelly, “I am unworthy” tone. Playing the helpless victim that needs to be rescued.

On the other side, the brusque, demanding, “this is my right” tone. That gets you nowhere as well.

Close your eyes, and remember yourself at your most assured, most centered, most gracious, most inviting.

And from that place, make the request.

4. Ask for what you want.

You’d think this might be obvious.

But it can be very easy to assume that what you want is bleedingly obvious. Surely, you think, it’s clear what’s being asked here.

Uh-oh.

Don’t make them have to work it out themselves.

Don’t make them have to work.

Make it easy for someone to say Yes or No or Maybe, by being specific about a request.

5. Say please. Say thank you.

Saying please? Pretty obvious.

Saying thank you? Also obvious, but remember to say thank you whether they say Yes or say No. The fact that they’ve considered the request is a gift and you can acknowledge it as such.

6. Don’t take it personally.

It’s one of my favourite mantras: An adult-to-adult relationship is being able to ask for what you want, knowing that the answer may be no.

There are a gazillion reasons why someone might say No to your request, and only a tiny percentage of them are that they think you’re an evil/worthless/despicable/

lousy/psychotic person. Most likely there’s something else going on and, for one reason or another, they can’t help you out this time.
No is good.

No means you can move on and ask someone else.

6.5. Added bonus: Think of it like a handshake. My friend, Mark Bowden is putting out a book called Winning Body Language in April. Watch this short video of him teaching people who to shake hands in a way that makes a difference.

The key lessons?

Touch palms – let them feel your humanity.

Turn your hand up – let them feel your vulnerability.

Be firm – let them feel your strength.

Not bad lessons on how to ask for help… or to live life for that matter.

Don’t take my word for it

Smart people thinking out loud about asking for help.

“Tell everyone what you want to do and someone will want to help you do it.”
-W. Clement Stone, American businessman

“Help thy brother’s boat across, and Lo! Thine own has reached the shore.”
-Hindu proverb

“When a person really desires something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream.”
-Paulo Coelho, Brazilian writer

“The best place to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm.”
-Swedish proverb

“It is not so much our friends’ help that helps us, as the confidence of their help.”
-Epicurus, Greek philosopher

“We are all here on earth to help others; what on earth the others are here for I don’t know.
-W. H. Auden, British writer

Now that it’s the beginning of semester, I’m supposed to have all those time and chances, only my bike was found with tyres totally flat and slightly twisted handle when I came back ( and it’s unrideable right now… until I manage to drag it to shop to fix it.

Yesterday my Iranian classmate Mahnoosh gave me this buah tangan from her vacation in her homecountry recently for semester break.. and she just returned here last week. Though I have no idea how to use or where to place this kind of accessory, it’s sure so pretty! I should have asked her to buy me a set of chador, somehow it’s so intriguing when I saw how Iranian ladies dressing… and I want to see myself wearing chador so badly! Oh I want to visit Tehran again one day, probably when it’s snowing there like these days. And talking about Iran, it’s apparently one of the most common countries where USM foreign students come from, at least for this campus. There are 2 Iranians in my class. And they are (super) beautiful.

Ujian Saringan Masuk (USM) Daerah

Ujian Saringan Masuk (USM) Pusat

Seleksi Penerimaan Mahasiswa Baru (SPMB)

phy,

Ya Allah, Engkau tau kegelisahan hamba-Mu ini
