Halfway through episode 19 Arisugawa mocks Nanami and Miki for their inability to change the objects

Halfway through episode 19 Arisugawa mocks Nanami and Miki for their inability to change the objects of their passion. Having said this, she thinks a bit more, and then includes herself in the same group. Nanami’s retort, that she has always loved the same man and precisely this is why her love is eternal, is very interesting in a Platonic sort of way. But I’m not going to deal with that here.

Oftentimes knowing the answer is not enough to solve the problem.

Certainly, Juri has always been obsessed with her best friend. Nanami loves her big brother. Miki, on the other hand, has made a sweeping switch from Kozue to Anthy. One way to look at this is to say that for him, Kozue = Anthy, and so it’s really the same person, or better, the same ideal, that he has always yearned for. Another possible perspective is to reason that deep down Miki still loves Kozue, and Anthy is a replacement that will never truly work for him. Or maybe he’s simply switched, end of story

Utena is obsessed with her prince and has been throughout. Anthy’s heart is closed to us still, but can there be any doubt that whoever it is that keeps her heart holds it dictatorially and without rivals? That’s the vibe I get from her…

Then how about Wakaba? Very early on in the series, when her heart was broken by Saionji, she pledged herself to Utena vowing absolute fidelity. Episode 19 worked for me because I had totally forgotten these facts. When the Onion King showed up, I didn’t think much of it: wasn’t Wakaba one of those girls who goes from crush to crush? I could see the series Onion to Saionji to Utena with potentially several more names to be inserted before, between and after these three. “This is why Wakaba can’t be a duelist, she lacks the manic impulse, she is normal.”

Nanamiki, hmmm, this could work!

Toward the end of the episode, I still didn’t have a clue. I thought, wow, here we have an episode without dueling, just a sidestory on love. Cute. And then when Onion King got rejected, I assumed without a doubt in the world, that Wakaba would go running straight into the arms of a nonplussed Utena. Her prince, Utena.

So then Onion goes down the shaft, and I’m getting ready for a very short but exciting duel. Of course, Onion’s gripe must get through to Utena, otherwise he is useless as a duelist (he can’t get his weapon from Wakaba!). The Black Rose gropes for this, for Onion to hate Utena. And I think there were at this point two perfectly good reasons for optimism:

1) Utena was the one who pushed Onion into confessing to Wakaba, thus triggering the rejection. Onion could have been angry at Utena because of this.

2) I actually believe Onion lied with that whole roundabout plan to get near Wakaba. Onion originally intended to go for Utena, and seeing himself rejected by her, he found a smooth way to get a hold of Wakaba as a consolation prize. If my theory is right, then Utena’s rejection is indeed the main cause of all his trouble and he should be angry.

Welcome home.

But he didn’t make either of these connections, he kept it at the level of Wakaba and himself. “Deeper, go deeper” said the voice, but he didn’t. For the purposes of the Black Rose, this was a failure.

So Wakaba runs into Saionji’s arms, thus proving she is obsessive enough to qualify for a duel. Awesome.

But what does Saionji do with this? How can the one man who seems the most obsessed with Anthy qua Anthy (not as Rose Bride, not as the opressed to be pitied and liberated but with Anthy herself) hijack a mechanism whose very aim is the destruction of his beloved?? This is a dangerous game, and it keeps getting more dangerous.

***

If you comment, please don’t spoil past this episode!!!

At the end of the (first) Student Council Arc, Anthy sums up the seven duels fought by Utena so far

At the end of the (first) Student Council Arc, Anthy sums up the seven duels fought by Utena so far with these seven words:

1. friendship 2. choice 3. reason 4. love 5. adoration 6. belief 7. self

While these notions are all over the map, they are all positive, constructive feelings. The duelists themselves are driven by an ambition to have these notions come to fruition in their lives. And the key to this ambition is the Rose Bride, Anthy.

The Black Rose breaks with this scheme. What was the key becomes an obstacle to be eliminated. And the overarching drive for the duelists is not ambition but hatred. We’re still fighting duels, but these changes are enough to entertain us and complicate matters further. Is Thanatos stronger than Eros? Is Kozue stronger than Saionji? This is the question of the arc.

“Wait a minute!” I hear you say, “Kozue is in love with her brother, she wants to consumate this love…surely this is what truly drives her.” I accept that point, but may I suggest that the death drive lurks beneath this layer? What really lies at the bottom of that shaft: is it love or is it death?? Freud wrestled with this for years until he…well…until he died.

Utena’s enemies, we must keep in mind, are triple now. In episode 15 she fights Kozue, but this means she also fights Miki and a nameless Black Rose combatant from long ago. Is the One stronger [or more primary] than the Many? And isn’t Utena’s ultimate reliance on Anthy and the power of Dios a sort of trinity in itself, so that the One is in fact never one, but Many?? In which case then, Utena’s last victory over Tohga, her quest for the Self, is rendered useless and illusory???

In any case, as otou-san says, this is repetition with variation, and IMHO it works. The structure is the same, but the function is totally different. The members of the Black Rose wish to substitute the Rose Bride, but this means keeping the position of Rose Bride in place. For the moment, thus, the structure looks to be as solid as that castle in the sky.

NOTE ON NANAMI:

Previously I called her “the pessimist of the show”. Now I’ll add the epithet of “Everyman” to that. And of course Everyman is always but one step away from becoming Everycow, especially when handed the opportunity on a platter.

I haven’t actually been collecting bjds that long, I just started collecting January of this y

I haven’t actually been collecting bjds that long, I just started collecting January of this year. At that point, I was firmly under the belief that my full set Little Fee Ante, Marie by Fairyland would be my one and only. Then I decided a puki couldn’t hurt especially if I did a layaway from Denver Doll in the meantime I ended up trading one of my dals for a puki. I bought another tiny bjd by a different company but couldn’t bond with her so I sold her and used the money from her sale (as well as the sale of a few blythes) to fund my grail bjd Volks Yo-SD Hina Ichigo. Then just recently I traded for Volks Super Dollfie Mimi which honestly surprised me as I had attended a bjd meet very early on in my collecting and promptly decided although they are gorgeous, they are not for me.. my heart (for larger dolls) belonged to dollfie dream. I decided that in order for Mimi to stay and for me to actually have a shot at bonding with her, she was going to have to become more dollfie dream-like and be modeled after an anime character in this case Utena. I think it is safe to say the only owning one bjd theory has been given up, I already have another on layaway which I am honestly hoping is my third and final fairyland puki. I didn’t even try that particular theory with dollfie dreams, my first two arrived on the first day. For reference’s sake I do not consider dollfie dreams to be bjds, I prefer dollfie dreams over bjds but I consider them to kind of be there own thing that is also why that have separate pages here. I am not sure how many more I will eventually acquire, I am trying to only buy dolls that I am absolutely in love with. I really love Fairyland Little Fees (they are my favorite size and I love their sculpts) so I think it is safe to assume after I finish paying off the puki, I will start working on another one of them although I love so many of the releases I am having a hard time choosing which one.

I do love my bjds but I feel guilty because I tend to neglect them. With the exception of Marie, I just don’t photograph them as much as my other dolls, their wardrobes are pathetic and it takes me forever to actually work up the will to actually buy them something they need. I just now bought an alternate wig for my Marie (Little Fee- Ante) although I had been wanting one for her, for when she dresses more casually (her stock wig is kind of formal) since like March. I am going to try and make an effort to expand their wardrobes a bit but I have a hard time finding stuff I actually like ^^; I might have to step up my game with sewing but I haven’t had the time lately. I am also going to make a concerted effort to photograph my girls more.

Although project Mahoro is not complete, I have started another project. For those of you wondering

Although project Mahoro is not complete, I have started another project. For those of you wondering about Mahoro, her face up is complete but she still lacks a body, wig, clothes and I am not entirely happy with her eyes. I am just kind of frustrated with the lack of progress with her at the moment especially since I can not seem to find the wig I want for her. Our new project, comes about due to the unexpected acquisition of a Volks Super Dollfie. I say unexpected because I never anticipated owning a larger than Yo-SD bjd and I was not actively looking for another bjd right now. I acquired her through a trade with an acquaintance of mine, the offer was too good to refuse. She is a Volks Super Dollfie Mimi, I had always liked her sculpt because it was more stylized than most bjd sculpts. Most larger bjds are kind of off putting to me as they are too realistic looking but luckily Mimi is not like that. I was kind of flummoxed as to what I was going to do with her, I started looking for clothes and such but I couldn’t really find anything I liked. I was looking around Denver Doll’s site and I found this wig then it clicked, with her stylized sculpt she would make a perfect Utena.

I loved the Revolutionary Girl Utena anime, when I was younger. I haven’t watched it in years but it holds a lot of nostalgic value for me, it was even the first anime I ever bought on dvd (although it took forever to complete because the licensing company only released the first season until years later). I used to have a Utena and Anthy wall scroll hung up in my room but I think I finally took it down in the last time we got a big batch of wall scrolls in to make room for something else. The show irked me in it’s lack of merchandise other than the plushes and the two sega real figures there was not a whole of stuff.

After some thought and discussion (with requiemart who is apparently is a huge RGU fan) I decided that to start off with her “stock” will be the black and white school uniform from the movie, I know it is not as iconic as the uniform from the series but she is my doll and I aesthetically prefer the black and white uniform plus I think it may actually be less complicated to actually sew (I am going to at least take a stab at sewing this myself before resorting to farming the work out). Eventually I actually intend to have a fairly extensive wardrobe for her: the school uniform from the anime series, the dualist uniform from the series, the dualist uniform from the movie, girl’s Ohtori academy and Utena’s rose bride gown. To answer some related questions that are bound to spring up- At this time I think Utena will be the only character I will turn into a bjd, if I was to do a second one Anthy would not be my first choice. If I did ever make an Anthy it would be based off of the movie appearance anyway but honestly she is like 4th or 5th in line in terms of characters I would like to see as bjds (Nanami, Mikage, Kozue, Shiori then Anthy).

I most certainly do not have any crazy ideas of making bjd versions of the entire cast. My next project (which is not even to be started on until Utena and Mahoro are complete) will more than likely be another dollfie dream this time based off of Nurse Witch Komugi as I love her character design and after that I plan on doing Elda and Freya of Chobits but that one is going to take more planning as I want to do both at the same time as well as make pullip/dal customs of Sumomo and Kotoko.

I know. I know. I’m a horrible updater. I have been cross-stitching, but I just haven’t updated about it. I’ll do that in another post, but I’ll let you know that I’m making a lot of good progress on it.

As for PAX, it was awesome. I was able to hang out with Rym, Scott from Geek Nights along with Emily and Alex of the Front Row Crew. It was gaming with them and being able to do whatever. As a small gift for their cross-country gift, I decided to test out my cross-stitch key chain idea and made them all key chains.

It turns out, cross-stitch key chains are pretty easy to make. It also works in using standard acrylic key chains that are primarily for inserting a photo. Each of them enjoyed their present, so it was a success. Rym got the Ohtori Academy Crest from Utena, which is one of his favorite anime. I thought it would go well with the Utena Rose Crest scarf I made him last year. It also goes with his personalized license plates that say “Ohtori”. I made Scott the Yoshi from SNES Super Mario Kart. This was my favorite one because obviously, I’m such a Yoshi fan-girl. I made Emily the cute SD Totoro, from the famous Miyazaki anime, My Neighbor Totoro. And for Alex, Burning Wheel. I really didn’t know Alex that much, however I knew he really liked Burning Wheel and ran campaigns, so I figured it would work out. He enjoyed it and apparently, the creator, Luke Crane, Tweeted about it as well: Bumped into burner alex. We chatted about our bw campaigns. He had a sweet knitted burning wheel knitted medallion! #pax4:30 PM Sep 4th from txt

As for the Geek Nights buttons that I had made, they were all pretty much handed out at PAX. Hopefully the word has spread so they can have more awesome listeners and members of their forums.

The only thing bad about PAX was the infamous PAX Pox outbreak of the flu and swine flu. I was one of the unfortunate ones to get the flu, but not the H1N1 swine flu. I was pretty much out of commission the following week. All I did was sleep, drink caramel apple cider with Thera Flu, sleep, eat soup, sleep, watch Red Dwarf on streaming Netflix, and sleep. I slept so much, that I easily rivaled the amounts my cats slept. I’m better now, except that dreadful cough that seems to never go away and back into my normal routine.

Recently, I’ve acquired the newly released hot pink DSi. I’ve been contemplating on upgrading my DS Lite to the DSi for a while now, but never seemed to have any good reasons to justify the purchase. However, with the fact that my DS Lite’s trigger buttons were acting dodgy and the release of the newer colors of DSi, I knew it was time. Also Gamestop was having a good trade-in deal for if you turned in a certain amount of Xbox 360/PS3/Wii games, you get an additional $20 trade-in credit. So after collecting many DS/Wii/360/PS3 games along with my pink DS Lite, I obtained a hot pink DSi and two copies of Scribblenauts without having to pay for anything.

So now I have a hot pink DSi, and I love the new features of it. If I only had wifi access at work, oh boy, I would really never get work done. But with the new acquired hand held gaming system, I needed something to protect it from getting any scratches for whenever I kept it in my purse. I then decided to make a cozy for it. After a good amount of searching for fabric and sitting in front of the sewing machine, I completed it.

I used four different fabric patterns for the outside and lined it with a really cute fleece pattern on the inside. It’s not the best sewing work that I’ve done, but it still managed to come out really well and am happy to have made it. I really wish that the local craft stores carried a wider variety of fabrics like Japanese imported cute prints of animals, shapes, symbols, etc… I could easily order online, but I really didn’t want to wait. It’s just annoying that most of the prints there were so boring and basic and really didn’t look cute at all.

But yes, even though I wasn’t working on my main cross-stitch project, I was doing other craft work. I still have been working on the Home Sweet Home Yoshi and will post an update on that hopefully this week.

Last week otou-san over at Shameful Otaku Secret! wrote up a post concerning our chats on Revolution

Last week otou-san over at Shameful Otaku Secret! wrote up a post concerning our chats on Revolutionary Girl Utena, prompted by digitalboy’s invitation. Neither of us have seen this series before, and so along with a warning for spoilers in this post I’d like to include a plea against spoiling events beyond episode 5 for us!!!

Now, initially our idea was to watch one episode a week, chat about it, and trade posts between the two blogs. However someone couldn’t restrain themselves (I’m not saying who) and watched all the way to episode 5. So then the other one of us (which I admit is myself) was forced to watch up to 5 as well.

So we had a pretty epically rambling chat on these 4 episodes.

***

On Episode 02

We agreed that this episode, where Saionji gets an immediate rematch (WHY? YOU SHOULD NEVER DO THIS!!) and loses to Utena again, was relatively unremarkable.

otou-san: I’m finding it hard to remember something truly standout about it other than the fact that it’s the first time she used the sword and played for the defensive team

animekritik: Yeah…same here.

["Great chat, you guys," I hear you say. But wait!! There's more!!!]

***

On Episode 03

Touga’s younger sister, who seems to love her oniisama a bit too much, is upset at his interest for Anthy, so she sets up a ball, sends Anthy a funky green dress [which is shohjo murder in the first degree considering Anthy's dark complexion and purplish hair]. The dress disappears when you spill liquid on it [I bet you a certain former President wishes he...]

animekritik: I had this issue with the ball re: anthy’s disappearing dress: my shoujo side was saying “How horrible!!” and the rest of me was going: “Yeah, yeah” a la Beavis & Butthead.

otou-san: Haha too true. They’ve created a paradox.

[OK, that's pretty much all we talked about that. But hold on, the best is yet to come!!!!!]

***

On Episodes 04-05

The great Mickey story, super-compressed style, went something like this: Mickey and his sister played piano, Mickey loved his sister, got sick, sister dropped out, Mickey is looking for someone to replace her, finds Anthy, Nanami is still trying to get Anthy back for “stealing” her own brother, brings snail, snake, octopus to Utena’s, fails to humiliate anyone, Touga does Mickey’s sister, teaches him a lesson, Mickey tries to break up the council, fails, challenges Utena, fails, but promises he’ll be back.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way. Here’s what our discussion yielded.

[otou-san was a big fan of these episodes:]

otou-san: I liked the Mickey arc a lot, because the first episode was very light hearted with the mongoose and such, but got pretty dark with Touga’s “teaching” and the duel. I’m surprised at how seamlessly it’s been able to move between moods and styles so far

animekritik: Just like a young lady can switch moods….with ease.

otou-san: So true. You see what I mean about how it got really crazy with the backbiting and whatnot really fast?

animekritik: Very shohjo, yeah. meow grrrrrr! What’s up with the octopus? Is that scary? snail -> snake -> octopus..

otou-san: GL said he kept thinking about dream of the fisherman’s wife. In seriousness, I dunno. I mean, it’s definitely one notch up in bizarre you could explain away a snake in your house, they could certianly get there, but an octopus, well that would definitely indicate a weirdo… Of course, it wouldn’t live for very long…

[moving on to Touga:]

otou-san: I think what raised my eyebrows the most was Mickey walking in the music room as his sister’s leaving.

animekritik: That was excellent… Touga is gold.

otou-san: with solid brass testicles.

[otou-san brought up the comments from our first chat post:]

otou-san: I’m going into the comments here and I see two things crop up:

1. is the assertion that the duels are going to get repetitive

which I believe, since it’s kinda got the vibe of a magical girl transformation sequence, the animation itself is repeated but the commenter said that some people say it’s intentional because it’s meant to be seen as ritualistic, which, ok I can get behind to a degree as well.

animekritik: Yeah. Like watching sumo..it’s the same darn thing for the first 5 minutes: salt here salt there, crouch..no. get up again… If you’re a sumo fan that’s just time for you to get excited about the match.

otou-san: Makes sense comparing it to sumo: both are a one on one match rooted in ritual.

2. The other thing mentioned in the comments was a heavy use of symbolism which is already starting to crop up

animekritik: Example?

otou-san: Well there’s the apple, which usually is a pretty obvious symbol, but it was there, cut away, cut back and it’s sliced. I’m not a real student of symbolism, but I’m not sure how I’d interpret a sliced apple

animekritik: Wait, wait, wait. I can’t even remember an apple.

otou-san: It’s a rooftop scene where the council is talking [episode 05]. They meet on the roof, it even has its own chair… Mickey talks about dissolving the council and stopping the duels for Anthy…exactly one minute later, shot of the apple and it’s creatively sliced.

animekritik: Ok, then it might be Eris’ Apple, Goddess of discord. Mickey is trying to break Olympus up.

otou-san: Ah, yeah that makes sense.

me: But it was sliced, which means the council overcame the difficulty.

otou-san: Well Touga pretty much shut him down, so yeah…

[Eventually we got down to Anthy, her mysteries, and our uncontrollable speculations:]

animekritik: Anthy is an airhead. T or F?

otou-san: Gonna bet on F. That smile has the “I know something” quality to it.

animekritik: hmmm. so it’s all a charade, huh..

otou-san: What’s your answer to that question then? Undecided?

animekritik: I’d like her to be a klutz. Bbut she looks a lot like….Utena’s prince in the OP, I think!!!

otou-san: I had the thought about how she looked like the prince but wouldn’t she have to be older? Dunno.

animekritik: Nah, her older brother.. oniisama!

[Enter Utena:]

animekritik: Anthy wants Utena to win..always. That should mean something.

otou-san: But doesn’t she want whoever has her at the moment to win?

animekritik: I got the impression she wanted Utena to win when fighting Saionji..and this made him angry. Same against Mickey.. she cheered.

otou-san: That certainly bothered Mickey a lot.

animekritik: no kidding!!

[We turn to evangelion philosophy:]

otou-san: Mickey was an interesting case. He claimed he was fighting for her free will, but two things about that: 1. he was just aping what he heard Utena say, when he thought that was a good idea; 2. he was still using the duel process, which shows he really wasn’t that serious or maybe he didn’t know what giving her her freedom actually meant.

animekritik: After his attempt to break the council up..

otou-san: Well yes, but it was too easy to shoot him down, could he really have thought that’d work?

animekritik: But there’s also this to consider: if Anthy’s will is to obey her master, then isn’t this an exercise of her free will?

otou-san: Yeah, I tossed that around in my head a couple times. She always frames it in such a way that you can’t be sure. Since she’s cheerfully smiling, saying “if that’s what Utena wants”.

animekritik: Ambiguous, yes.. What do you think this “world revolution” actually entails?? Coz i don’t have a clue.

otou-san: I don’t either and who might the End of the World be? At this point I actually have Gendo Ikari in my head.

animekritik: Gah.. Seele.

otou-san: Yeah I dunno… really haven’t been doing too much speculating yet. I’m still a bit overcome by the atmosphere and style and confusion.

***

My apologies to Chu Chu!!! I just realized we didn’t even mention him/her/it. Here’s a bone Chu, now go and chu on it.

Anyway, I hope this wasn’t too long of a post. Comments will be appreciated, but please do not spoil past episode 5!!!

Legend of Basara

Love my life (Manga)
