BACKGROUND:  WHAT IS UV MAPPING AND UNWRAPPING?

UV Mapping is an important part of 3D modelling… it is the process of “taking each face of the 3D object and laying it flat onto a 2D plane… so we can paint it… or use a photo-texture… for example.

It is the OPPOSITE of what a clothes maker does… they take a flat “design” and “wrap” it around a mannequin… 3D texturers take a model’s surface “design” and “unwrap” it to be flat (2D).

They then use a combination of photo scouring, compositing and digital painting techniques to add colour, surface detail and “information about the material” (e.g. is it stone or metal… this is an in-depth area… search for more on “material properties” and simulating them)

NB: The next bit of this post assumes that you are familiar with 3d modelling and also UV mapping.  Also, 3ds Max users like to call it UVW instead of UV (they like to be different )

One of the latest technologies to hit the resurfacing industry is utilizing UV paint and a UV light to “instantly” cure the paint.  This process is touted to be the greenest method of resurfacing today due to it being Low to Zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) but it’s not as safe as they try to tell you.

The process of UV curing involves the use of a UV light that produces heat up to 1500° F.  Due to the high heat this light puts out, there is a very real danger of the spray technician being burned severely and even causing eye damage to the point of going blind.  Anyone who is around who isn’t properly equipped with a full Tyvek suit, full face UV mask (usually a welding helmet is used) and gloves is susceptible to receiving the same level of damage to their person.  While the Low to Zero VOC is an outstanding leap forward to refinishing technologies, the other dangers make this solution something to reconsider.

Another issue with the UV process is the additional cost.  I cannot lie when I speak of the positively outstanding end result of the process!  The hardness is unmatched and the gloss is such that you can see yourself in the finished product.  However, due to the additional cost of the UV light (not to mention the replacement bulbs, etc.), the price of a surface done with a UV coating is usually considerably higher than if done with the more traditional resurfacing coatings.

Speaking of the hardness, there is an issue of the tape removal after the process is complete.  You see, part of the prep process is to tape paper up around your surrounding walls and fixtures that aren’t getting refinished or reglazed to contain most, if not all, of the overspray that naturally occurs when doing this kind of work.  By utilizing the UV light, you are, in effect, baking the finish on and that includes any overspray that is on the tape used to put the paper up.  Removing the tape after the process is done has not been shown to be an easy or clean process.  Part of the purpose of the tape is to make a neat and clean paint line, however the UV paints are SO durable that it makes it impossible to remove the tape in that neat and clean method.

An important part of our goal at AKL Resurfacing is to give you a finished product that is precise, neat and professional.  We understand that you want the best in quality and that is precisely what we strive to achieve.

One last concern regarding the UV coatings out these days is what happens if it is under-cured.  While that shouldn’t normally be a problem within the tub itself, it can be a problem with any potential overspray that may have gone past the paper and onto your tile or other fixtures.  While the UV coatings are Low to Zero VOC, if they are left under cured, they can be corrosive to your exposed surfaces.  While every technician tries to be very conscientious about covering every exposed surface, they aren’t perfect and sometimes little bits are left exposed or paint gets past what you think is protected.  That happens with conventional coatings, too, however that is easily cleaned off, even if it’s not found for a period of time, whereas the UV coating may corrode your brand new (and very expensive) tile or plumbing fixture.

The cost of refinishing should begin and end with the actual product and labor of the job and shouldn’t include the dangers of harming anyone or anything.

We’ll conclude by saying that we do believe that UV coatings are the future of home resurfacing, in spite of the fact that we have some very big concerns about it as it is right now.  We plan on keeping a very close eye on this exciting technology and we’ll let you know as soon as we discover something new!

Protecting Your Eyes from Solar Radiation

The sun supports all life on our planet, but its life-giving rays also pose dangers.

The sun’s primary danger is in the form of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation is a component of solar radiation, but it can also be given off by artificial sources like welding machines, tanning beds and lasers.

Most are aware of the harm UV radiation can do to the skin, but many may not realize that exposure to UV radiation can harm the eyes or that other components of solar radiation can also affect vision.

There are three types of UV radiation: UV-C is absorbed by the ozone layer and does not present any threat; UV-A and UV-B radiation can have adverse long- and short-term effects on the eyes and vision.

If your eyes are exposed to excessive amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time, you are likely to experience an effect called photokeratitis.

Like a “sunburn of the eye”, photokeratitis may be painful and include symptoms such as red eyes, a foreign body sensation or gritty feeling in the eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and excessive tearing. Fortunately, this is usually temporary and rarely causes permanent damage to the eyes.

Long-term exposure to UV radiation, however, can be more serious. Scientific studies and research have shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a period of many years increases the chance of developing a cataract and may cause damage to the retina, a nerve-rich lining of the eye that is used for seeing. Additionally, chronic exposure to shorter wavelength visible light (i.e. blue and violet light) may also be harmful to the retina.

The longer the eyes are exposed to solar radiation, the greater the risk of developing later in life such conditions as cataracts or macular degeneration. Since it is not clear how much exposure to solar radiation will cause damage, the AOA recommends wearing quality sunglasses that offer UV protection and wearing a hat or cap with a wide brim whenever you spend time outdoors. Also, certain contact lenses can provide additional UV protection.

To provide adequate protection for your eyes, sunglasses should:

• block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation;
• screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light;
• be perfectly matched in color and free of distortion and imperfection; and
• have lenses that are gray for proper color recognition.

The lenses in sunglasses should be made from polycarbonate or Trivex® material if you participate in potentially eye-hazardous work or sports. These lenses provide the most impact resistance.

If you spend a lot of time outdoors in bright sunlight, wrap around frames can provide additional protection from the harmful solar radiation.

Don’t forget protection for children and teenagers. They typically spend more time in the sun than adults.

Be sure to see your doctor of optometry at least every two years for a comprehensive eye examination. It is a good way to monitor your eye health, maintain good vision and keep track of your solar radiation protection needs as well as new advances in eye protection.

Take Day-Glo colors. We see them every day on Blaze Orange traffic cones and hunter’s caps, Signal Green sticky notes, and Saturn Yellow highlighter markers. But did you ever stop to think why some pinks look rosy while others are actually hot?

Like most people, author Chris Barton didn’t give Day-Glo colors a second glance until he happened to read an obituary of Robert Switzer, who with his brother Joe turned an interest in magical illusions into an industry — and along the way created hues Nature never dreamed of. The Day-Glo Brothers tells about Joe’s fascination with ultraviolet lamps, which he wanted to use to make objects in his magic shows glow in the dark. Poking around in their father’s drugstore, they found chemicals which they used to create the first fluorescent paint. Then Bob got the idea to make glow-in-the-dark ink for store signs and billboards. It was an accident that some of the paint they developed also glowed in the light. World War II made the brothers rich selling glowing paint for buoys, signal flags and safety jackets. Psychedelic posters and bright green tennis balls came later.

Hi all, sorry for the lack of posts (seem to say that once in a while don’t i lol) was of with a lil fever but i’m all better now 110% whoohoo. Recently i realised that i haven’t posted up a few events the main one being the after party of OFFSET at the Twisted Pepper. (Which was quite a while ago, being on the 7th of Nov and all.) Well here are some of the photos click here for a list of all the speakers at the event which i didn’t get a chance to go to but there’s always next year! ^_^

The interior of the twisted pepper (it’s a bit empty now but by the end of the night it was jam packed!!) I really like the illustrative murals. Very bright and vibrant, a lovely creative atmosphere that caters for the target audience. Awesome location for the OFFSET after party.

Another mural down stairs, the characters are quirky and interesting however a bit on the freaky side for me, especially the one with the big stripped nose! (Anyone with Coulrophobia i.e. fears of clowns better watch out)

One of the highlights for me of the night. A round pool table, how awesomely cute, too bad it was a bit of a rip off, two euros and there wasn’t even a white ball, and the table was kinda wonky, but hey a round pool table’s a round table, def worth a picture!!

One of the many blank posters they had up on the walls for illustrators to sketch on!  This one’s a collaboration between Chaz from the London Police (another image at the very bottom) and another artist (apologies for the unknown identity).

Along with the black posters, later at the event they put up a massive sheet of clear perspex and used UV pens to sketch. Below are some of the pics, apologies for the weird camera angles and the quality, not the best was too distracted watching the process. The event was great especially with live art although it had a bit of a late start (when i say late i mean really late)  but it was definitely worth the travel up and down from Belfast by the end of it. Totally amazing to see creatives work in a very intense environment. (Well i suppose it’s not that intense but i’m sure it takes quite a bit of confidence to get up and just draw with people watching. I tip my cap to anyone who tries!!!

At this point im practically done the UV layout for my characters body and now all that’s left is the head or at least i think so, keeping in mind that i may need to make adjustments based on the results i get when i finally pull the normal’s from the hi-rez sculpt.

I spent a total of 8.5 hours doing the UV layout and i wasn’t really expecting it to take so bloody long but i guess that’s what i get for not sculpting a perfectly symmetrical character. Needless to say i still need to make her some hair then retopologize her grenades and her brick of C-4 plastic explosive.

The current poly count is about 600 tri’s shy of 10,000 plus a roughly estimated 400 tri’s for hair, not the most impressive poly count ever but i’m pretty confident that i was as efficient as i could be with this particular model.

Just ‘D’ facts

Vitamin D isn’t a supplement or a vitamin. It’s a hormone made naturally when your skin is exposed to sunlight. No dietary source for “The Sunshine Vitamin” even comes close to vitamin D levels made naturally from UVB exposure.

What’s important is that 77 percent of Americans are vitamin D deficient, according to government data. The vitamin D research community now recommends vitamin D blood levels of 40-60 ng/ml – levels that nature meant for you to get from regular non-burning UV exposure. Any dermatologist who tells you otherwise is ignoring the facts and clings to the irrational sun-phobia that causes vitamin D deficiency.
Indoor tanners’ average vitamin D levels are 42-49 ng/ml, according to Boston University research — sufficient levels, and 90 percent higher than the rest of the population. That comes as no surprise; a single tanning session makes more vitamin D than 100 glasses of milk. In contrast, an Australian study reveals that dermatologists at the end of summer, when vitamin D levels should be their highest, are severely vitamin D deficient at 13.8 ng/ml.
So who’s in the dark here?
Vitamin D research has proven conclusively that you are designed to interact with sunlight, just as you are designed to breath air, drink water and eat food. It’s just a matter of time before dermatology and chemical sunscreen manufacturers are exposed for overstating the risks of UV – falsely suggesting that risks associated with repeated sunburn are also related to regular, non-burning exposure. That convenient omission has skyrocketed chemical sunscreen sales, turning a sunburn-prevention product into a daily over-use product. And that has contributed to vitamin D deficiency.

It’s time to expose yourself to something that should be obvious: It’s time to let the sun back into your life.

The other day, I was talking to my wife Anna about that no good asshole she left me for and she said “He’s light years beyond you Harry, don’t even compare yourself to him!”

I just slapped her face right there. First of all, anyone who thinks that light years are a unit of measurement for how poor of a husband I am clearly doesn’t understand the basics of physics. Light years describe how time is relative to light. This is similar to using “dog years” to describe your beloved pet’s rapid decrepidation. And a light year is roughly the length of time it takes for the universe to begin and then end. Kind of a useless measurement for us humans in my opinion.

Particle Physicists (More like particle suckacists! Zing!) have debated about the nature of light for the last few years. Is it a particle or is it a wave? Since this question isn’t being hotly debated by wave physicists, I am going to assume that the particle physicists are a bunch of biased bastards. There has actually been a number of rigorous studies done to determine this. Some indicated it was a wave. Some indicated it was a particle. The lazy conclusion they came to was that light was both a particle AND a wave. Ok, before you call them all idiots for arriving at such a counterintuitive notion, let me tell you about how they found this out. You’ll laugh even harder.

Anyway, let me go into the detail of this horrible Freudian-projected nightmare. The scientist would tell you that if you have a photon entering two slits, then it could theoretically interfere with itself if you do not observe it. If you do observe it, then the photon will not interfere with itself. This is all just some bullshit fantasy that if your wife doesn’t observe you having sex with two other women, it’s okay, since there’s some kind of penile (represented by photons) interference. Jeez scientists, grow up!

Its so patently obvious that this is the Freudian expression of the scientist’s desire for an adulterous threesome. One in which his penis interferes with itself. Guess what science guys, I tried that excuse, but my wife still won’t return my calls. Kind of punches a hole in your logic, don’t you think?

Back in the day, scientists wanted to know if there was this luminiferous ether that light travelled through. They never found the luminiferous ether! No shit, you particle dumbassicists! Didn’t you read Genesis chapter 1? God spoke and He bespoke light. Clearly light is supernatural in origin. You dipshiticists. However, to be fair, science was right about there needing to be a medium for light to travel through. You see, sound can’t travel in a vacuum. And since light is composed of God Voice Particles (GVP), any over-arching theory of cosmology has to include something like deity air (not some stupid ether!) for the sound particles to travel through.

My colleagues, occasionally secular godless science can be right. One thing physicists got right was when they said that at the speed of light (you know, 9,999 miles per hour), time does not pass, so light experiences no aging just like God. So clearly light could have only originated from God. My goodness, what do these jerks at MIT do all day not to realize that ageless particles prove their own origin – their own origin being that of God!

Speaking of time coming to a stop, there’s this stupid theory called Relativation Theory (you’d think it would be about relatives or something) that says that time slows down as you approach the speed of light. Let me tell you, I tried driving really fast in my car, and not only did time not slow down, but it actually seemed to pass faster as it didn’t take as long to get to my work. I was 20 minutes early! Wow, who came up with such a terrible theory?

Another claim by physicists is that light can’t escape a black hole. How absurd! Being the natural skeptic that I am, I went into my backyard where there are plenty of holes. I tossed a mirror down one and shone my flashlight into the hole. The beam of photons bounced right back out. Maybe the scientist that came up with this theory fell down a crevasse as a kid or was just really scared of the dark. Seems like astronomy might be a bad field to work in for you guys.

Light is actually not as complex as people think it is. The mainstream opinion is that humans only percieve a limited spectrum of light known as the “visible” and that there is also “Infrared”, “Ultraviolet,” “Radio,” “X-Rays,” and a bunch of other satanic beams of light rays. The truth is that scientists saw their funding drying up after they discovered Red through Purple and went ahead and made up some new kinds of light.

Let me conclude on this note. A particle physicist once asked me if a cat in some box was dead or alive due to some quantum mechanical mumbo jumbo aptly named Schumaker’s Cat. What a stupid question. I kill my neighbor’s cats routinely by boxing them up and tossing them into a river. So I’m fairly certain that most of the time when a cat is in a box, it is dead. Especially after I run it over with my Ford truck! In the interest of testing this ridiculous claim, I took the litter of kittens my neighbor was trying to find a home for and put them all in a box. Well, big disappointment. They took a whole day and a half to die, and no matter how many times I observed them they never came back to life.

Do you really want to believe a bunch of eggheads who are afraid of the dark, like to cheat on their wives, think cats can come back to life literally, and ask you stupid riddles about dead cats?

Att acceptera att det finns människor med olika åsikter är en sak, att misshandla eller mordhota någon för att han eller hon inte har samma åsikt som en själv är någonting helt annat.

För med tanke på hur mycket våld och mordhot som begås utav vänsteraktivister och vissa andra vänstertyper emot meningsmotståndare så är det lätt att tro att de tror att Sverige är den nordiska motsvarigheten till det asiatiska landet Burma.

Skillnader emellan Burma och Sverige finns ju visserligen, men om man bortser ifrån att regimen i Burma mördar varenda person i Burma som ger uttryck för att inte hålla med landets regim om allting så är nog inte skillnaderna sådär megastora ändå.

T ex har redan en sverigedemokratisk grupp på Facebook (jag tänker nu inte på den som heter “Sverigedemokraterna i riksdagen – Ja tack”) som inte har funnits så länge redan fått en drös med mordhot, vilket har resulterat i att man i gruppen har stoppat för fler att bli medlemmar.

Jojo, skillnaden mellan att hålla käften och att mordhota varenda jävel som man inte gillar är inte så stor ändå, båda sätten är lika IQ-befriade och passar bättre i en riktigt illa byggt “hönshus” (eller dårhus) än ute i det verkliga livet.

Eller tror dessa larviga pellejönsar att “hönshus” är verkligheten? Visserligen lever vi ju alla i olika sorters verklighet. Men ändå……..

Visst, man behöver inte gilla Sverigedemokraterna om man inte vill, ingen tvingar en.

Men till de som avskyr  SD och som anser att partiet har fel i invandringsfrågan (de har ju andra frågor än denna, har de fel i dem också?) säger jag bara följande: Kom med riktiga argument eller argument över huvudtaget, istället för att försöka överrösta tuppar i Sveriges alla hönshus varav samtliga tuppar är i brunsten så mycket att de är fågelvärldens svar på stenkåta tjurars brölande!

På grund utav dessa idioter så kan man säga att Sverige “skakar rejält i grundvallarna”, eller om man så vill: Dessa personer representerar en helt ny form utav jordbävning, nämligen “den personifierade”.

När det gäller SD:s framgångar så stod på bl a SVT text-tv och i NWT igår om att partiet nu är större än både Centerpartiet och Kristdemokraterna.

Den senaste tidens medieuppmärksamhet kring Sverigedemokraterna verkar inte ha inverkat negativt på väljarstödet. Tvärtom. SD når rekordnivåer i senaste opinionsmätningen.

Partiet är nu större än både Kristdemokraterna och Centerpartiet och får 5,8 procent av partisympatierna i Sifos novembermätning. Det är den högsta noteringen hitills i en telefonmätning och en ökning med 1,1 procentenheter från föregånde månad. Uppgången är inte statistiskt säkerställd.

The majority of Americans do not use sunscreen as often as dermatologists recommend. Only about 20% report applying it regularly. Researchers at UC Davis have found evidence that suggests sending text message reminders to patients may improve compliance with sunscreen usage recommendations. In fact, people who received reminder texts were twice as likely to use sunscreen as others, according to their study.

Over 42, days, the study group who received reminder texts ended up applying sunscreen on 56% of those days, on average. The control group, which did not receive those texts, used sunscreen on 30% of the days. About 70% of the group who got text messages said they would like to continue using the reminder system after the study. The texts also included a weather report, and the wording of the reminder changed daily so that they would not become monotonous.

This study shouldn’t imply that everybody in the country must start receiving text messages telling them to apply sunscreen; however it does suggest that people at high risk of skin cancer could benefit from getting reminders via text. It’s a pretty simple way to raise patient compliance with skin protection recommendations.
