Stereophonics... Carrying on, sadly.

If you’re still buying Stereophonics albums can you please stop.  Yes ‘Word Gets Around’ and ‘Performance and Cocktails’ served up some solid sing-a-long-a-rock-n-roll for the summer festival months back in the late 90’s, but the Stereophonics haven’t released a single good album in over 10 years.

Yet somehow they are still releasing albums and selling out arenas all over the UK because someone is still listening to them.  And after a quick and painful listen of their latest release ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ I hope the eyes of those still faithful to the band, still buying their albums and seeing them live, will open widely and see clearly that they really are just utter shite.

She’s Alright is quite possibly the most impotent opening song I have ever heard in my entire life.  It’s more of a whimper than a song, and just when you think it may discover a pulse and kick it up a notch half way through, BAM, it doesn’t and it limps and trips to fill every second of it’s 3:26 existence with absolute audio-boredom.  And the worst thing is, this is the best song on the entire album.

Innocents attempts to sound bright and breezy are closer to boring and bland as it quickly becomes evident that the ‘Phonics are running out of both ideas and steam before your very ears.  It seems the band are taking the albums name quite literally as the entire album is calm yet sadly keeps carrying on.  A sentiment furthered with the “exquisite” I Got Your Number; “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8… I’ve got you’re number, You’re a fake”.  Really, Kelly Jones, this is the best you can do after being a professional songwriter for over 10 years?  Wow, just… wow.

‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ will do nothing to further the bands popularity or garner any new interest from anyone. The Stereophonics have always been an easy target for ridicule over the years, from both music snobs and the music media, and this album only adds more fuel to their fire, annd rightly so.  ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ really is the worst album I’ve heard all year, and by some distance too.

Collective V2 was a big success. For those of you who were cheering us on from the crowd, or thinking us us from afar, thank you for your continued support as we presented our latest inspirations in hair, fashion, music and most of all our thoughts on education.

This year in color we featured a mixed palette of tones and techniques ranging from apricot, pastels and classic sunny blonde balayage to vibrant reds and cool brown palettes. Paired with all white and gold fashions the hair color became the focal point, while showing texture with fringe.

For our cutting segment we were inspired by vibrant colors and textures in tribal street wear and the individual. Our shapes expressed graphic outlines and soft interiors, working with expanding the natural texture and observing growth patterns.

Lastly in our styling segment we took inspiration from vintage glamour and paired it with contemporary textures and finishes by shifting balances and mixing matte, pleated textures and smooth high-gloss shapes.

The months, days and hours we put into our shows is so immense I hope everyone who goes to the show realizes what it takes to do something like Collective V2. The name Collective is so appropriate because that is what it really is. It is a huge team effort. There are so many people to thank, I don’t even know where to start. Andrew and I are so grateful that the staff at dPT care about their work so much that they are willing to put in the time to be the best they can be. I think it really showed. The haircuts, color and updo’s were amazing even if I say so myself.   I’ve got to say working behind stage had it’s challenges.   Ruby Skye used to be an old theatre so there were 3 rickety staircases we had to go up and down on repeatedly.  The main working space was a dark labyrinth where we had  to do the hair.  Saying it was old, dark and dusty is putting it mildly (think Phantom of the Opera).  It’s a miracle it all came together.

Today saw the release of the long awaited v20 firmware update which was expected to bring kinetic scrolling throughout all menus on the N97, being able to hold keys down to access the alternative character/number when typing as well as some other much needed bug fixes. One important feature which was expected, Skype, is not included and is expected again, at a later date.

An excerpt of the change list from Steve Litchfield at All About Symbian:
Improvements in firmware 20.2.019 are:

• A reworked memory mapping model – this means that applications use the (relatively) limited RAM much more efficiently and you should rarely see any memory errors. Note that the available ‘Free RAM’ after booting is now a lot less (around 47MB), but don’t take this raw number too literally – apps apparently use less RAM than before
• Kinetic scrolling in the User Interface in all lists and larger-than-screen views
• The keyboard driver has been enhanced so that a long press on any key brings up its associated ‘function’ symbol (or number)
• Music player shows album art more reliably, plus extra MP3 ID3 information
• Half a dozen new social media and services widgets have been added by default
• Camera still and video improvements…

For those of you running a sim-free unlocked UK Nokia N97, the v12 update has only been able since the 17th of October, there may be quite a wait for v20 unless the posts on the Nokia forum have been read.

The update is probably only available to Euro sim-free variants but worth a try if you have a non-operator branded handset from another region. For more information check out this post on how to update your N97 firmware. Over the air updates using the built-in Software app may not be available for a few days.

Panasonic has just re-released the latest software update for the Lumix DMC-LX3 as version 2.1 as promised. Go download it!

Towards the end of last month Panasonic released a firmware update to my beloved Panasonic LX3. Some highlight features provided in the update include a bump in autofocus speed, improved white balance (including a white balance bracket mode), highlight warning display in playback mode, lens focal length resume after a power cycle, a new 1:1 aspect ratio, and a really cool “high dynamic” scene mode.

Shortly after announcing the update, Panasonic suspended it due to bugs in the firmware that are causing issues including loss of custom settings under certain circumstances.  I haven’t run into these issues yet myself, but one thing’s for sure, I’m glad I snuck in a download before they suspended it. I love these new features! According to Panasonic’s website, the revised v2.0 software should be ready any day now.

The high dynamic mode is one of my favorite features. I had a little time to put it to the test over the weekend. Available processing modes within High Dynamic are Normal, Art, and Black and White. The camera processes the images to really pull detail out of shadow areas and pump up the color, with really interesting results:

Ok, so not the most interesting shot in the world, but there’s a lot of dynamic range here, right? Harsh, mid-day light mixed with dark shadow areas.

I took the same scene using High Dynamic Art mode:

Here we have a much more balanced exposure, and a scene that looks much closer to what I was actually seeing here with my own eyes. Check out the details in the tires, the shadow on the lower right of the frame, and the trees and sky to the upper left. With some post processing in Lightroom, I probably could have achieved a similar effect, but I tend to use my Lumix as a fun, jpeg processing, take everywhere with me camera, so this added feature is a big plus. One thing to note is that ISO is fixed at 400 in High Dynamic mode.

I’m really happy that Panasonic is still seeking to make improvements to a camera that is now over a year old. I absolutely loved my Lx3 already, and now I love it even more!

So I’m taking this web apps course, where we’re making use of Apache Tomcat, J2EE, and generally learning how to employ the MVC framework in a modern web application (which we call “Fakebook”. Yeah I know, lollercoptorz, rite?). On the first three homework assignments, I have collectively received: 103, 100, 100. So I figured, on this fourth assignment (and with 34+ hours of built-up “penalty-less late time” with which to turn in the assignment), I had a little elbow room to experiment.

I decided to use the Struts2 and Hibernate frameworks.

Yeah, insane. Especially the latter, considering I have ZIP/ZERO/NADA/ZILCH experience with either one.

It took about a day to get the hang of how Struts organizes the MVC framework. The most difficult part, as usual, was setting up the XML configuration file. Luckily, it doesn’t require too many dependencies and is fairly straightforward to install and incorporate. It took another day to figure out the notion of Interceptors for the purpose of implementing authenticated resources, and also installing a database schema when the server was started.

Then came Hibernate. Holy Halloween, Batman.

This is seriously the most complex framework I have ever worked with. Each “module” beyond the core requires a heinous number of dependencies, some of which are optional, and woe is you if you mess them up. Supposedly v2.5 will incorporate a lot of the dependencies into a single package, but that’s still in Beta as of this post.

Maven can be effectively used to mitigate some of the difficulties in satisfying dependencies, but it’s still largely up to the user to figure out what packages are required if you want to use the Core, Search, or any of the other “modules.”

Once the dependencies are satisfied, then the real fun begins: configuring Hibernate.

The number of configuration options is mind-boggling; I feel like I’m installing Gentoo. I ended up making a post on StackOverflow when I reached a point where I could actually attempt flipping the “on” switch, and was greeted by cascading 50-level exceptions. The single response ended up being the right one (it was a simple “class” configuration option I thought wouldn’t have any effect, since – let’s face it – I have no idea what half the specified configuration options do, and the documentation isn’t much help), though it only revealed yet another exception.

Fixing that yielded another, and so on, and so on…literally at least a dozen more exceptions that were somewhat more straightforward, but revealed 1) just how little I knew how to use Hibernate, and 2) how so many different configuration options need to be perfectly specified for the damn thing to work.

But as of about an hour ago, I am proud to say that after three days of pouring through PDF documentation, Googling the hell out of phrases like “hibernate arrays” and “one-to-many hibernate exception” and “WHY WOULD ANYONE EVER USE HIBERNATE”, banging my head on the desk when the editor swore I had a phantom error in my XML config file, and satisfying concrete and transitive dependencies, my server BREATHED today by successfully executing an action within the Struts framework, which also contained a database access through Hibernate.

It’s WORKING. It’s ACTUALLY WORKING. HOLY CRAP. …and it’s due by 11:59pm tonight. WHEEE.

Also, I wanted to give a shout-out to my main man V² (my MacBook), for whom earlier this week I purchased a new battery after the previous one lasted 511 recharge/discharge cycles without ever offering less than 2+ hours of continuous use. Interestingly, the battery was beginning to bow outward (never a good sign) around the same time that OS X itself informed me that the battery needed to be replaced “soon”. So after more than three years and well over twice the average lifespan of these batteries, I dropped $130 on a new one.

V² paid for himself a long, long time ago. The new MacBook Pros are certainly the sexiest ones to hit the market so far, but this guy is a trooper. I purchased him in September of 2006, and the only expenditures I’ve had are a $150 mainboard/DVD drive/Bluetooth repair job, a $200 hard drive/RAM upgrade, and now a $130 battery replacement. Not too shabby at all for three years (and I didn’t even purchase the extended warranty!).

Anywho. Busy weekend ahead. I’ve had several more interviews, many of which have gone exceedingly well, and PhD and fellowship applications are going smoothly. Two big assignments due this week, lots of research work to be done over the weekend, and Cathryn will also be in town tomorrow night.

Ce travail d’éditorialisation (il n’y a pas de mot français plus adapté, et la traduction mot pour mot de “news curators” serait absurde) ne remplace en rien quelque activité journalistique que ce soit. Mieux, elle devrait en faire pleinement partie (comme l’animation de sa communauté ou la gestion de sa réputation). Clairement, elle a été de tout temps proche du travail de “médiation culturelle” des bibliothécaires. Concrètement, elle a été réinventée et remise au goût du jour avec le blogging, le bookmarking et se renouvelle dans les réseaux et médias sociaux, Twitter en tête.

Tout cet été, Corentin Allard a codé la V2 qui sera bêta-testée par le pool de contributeurs dès le 1° octobre prochain. Le design va s’enrichir, nourri d’un an d’usage et de retours, critiques, souhaits et bugs relevés, que ce soit sur les outils de feedback, par échanges mails, lors de discussions IRL, ou encore sur le blog, le wiki, le groupe facebook, twitter, etc. Olivier Livet a apporté son savoir-faire à cette nouvelle version. Aurélien Fache est en train de passer ses nuits sous le capot pour achever cette savante tuyauterie. Tom Wersinger y mettra la touche finale. Beaucoup de code, de la poésie. De l’amour aussi /-)

Voilà quelques-une des nouveautés :

- Aaaliens quitte Symfony pour WordPress. Plus cohérent, plus riche, mieux intégré dans nos écosystèmes, optimisé pour être multicomptes, WordPress ouvre une galaxie sans frontière vers de nouvelles fonctionalités… Et des aaaliens dédiés

- Aaaliens intègre le “temps-réel” et le microblogging avec un “pipe” de Twitters / nous reviendrons longuement sur cette partie des développements et le potentiel de cette démarche croisée.

- Aaaliens pourra être alimenté par tous types de flux. Jusque-là Délicious seulement était pleinement optimisé. Ceci va faire quelques heureux qui effectuent leur veille sur d’autres outils

- Aaaliens se dote d’un outil de recherche inédit : classement dans les sources, dans les “tops” (les liens signalés par plus d’un membre et ceux plébicités par les lecteurs) mais aussi par typologie de contenu (vidéo, mp3, pdf, etc).

La liste serait longue (et je compte bien sur d’autres pour y revenir) pour conter ici les travaux en cours et les centaines d’heures de travail investies dans ce projet fou, qui survie à toutes les épidémies…

Depuis l’ouverture d’Owni, Aaaliens est également intégré au vaisseau-mère afin d’y retrouver le meilleur de nos billets et lectures en une même unité d’espace. “Nous souhaitons multiplier les passerelles entre ces deux médias sociaux. Quitte à imaginer des rendez-vous physiques ensemble”, vous l’écrivions-nous le 20 aout dernier.

Avec un mois de retard et après un an de collaboration plus qu’enthousiaste, nous sommes tous fiers de vous donner rdv dans quelques jours [MAJ > dès ce soir samedi 3 octobre pour les contributeurs]. Les membres (à 3 yeux) béta-testeront le bébé et, avant le 10-12 octobre, on ouvre les gaz en grand /-)

Klein, aber Juhu! – Der designierte Dingsminister beim Onanieren erwischt! (Keinenglischkönnen ist doch nicht schlimm!)

Ich bin ja neurotischerweise nie gern bei der Mehrheit. Da bin ich etwas affig. Die Mehrheit macht mich nervös. Und was macht die Mehrheit sonst momentan? Das, was bisher mein erklärtes Steckenpferd war: Guido-Bashing ist der allerneueste Hype  im Netz, in den Foren, auf den angesagten Blogs. Guido Westerhase wird jetzt wahrscheinlich irgendwas, etwa Vize oder Außen, und alle sofort so: „Yeaahh!“.  – Das ist gemein! Gehässige Ironiker schießen sich gerade aufs Schiesser-Model Guido Westerwäsche ein! Ich meine, klar, FDP und so, da fällt vernünftigen Menschen-mit-Hirn der Kitt aus der randlosen Brille. FDP geht ja nun mal gaar nicht, und Westerwelle, omg! (...”Oh, mein Gott!”) Trotzdem: Ich denke hingegen kurz mal quer und um die Ecke: Ist er denn nicht aber  irgendwo auch … – süß?

Mein differenzierungsfroher Sinneswandel hat folgenden Grund:  Ich habe den Verbalmüll dieses Mannes ja stets für eine Zumutung gehalten und das arrogant-schnöselig-peinlich-dummdreiste Herrenlaberhandtäschchen aus aknegenarbten Nobelleder für einen elend-unsäglichen Rhetorikkasper, dessen semipolitischen Lautsprechereien – immer im Westerwellenschliff messerscharfer  Auftrumpfgrandezza gehalten! – ungefähr so geistvoll wirkten, als hätte der Mann den Schwarz-gelben Gürtel in Sudoku.

Es verhält sich aber alles eventuell ganz anders, weil Guido nämlich wider Erwarten DOCH eine menschliche Seite hat! Wie? Guido W., der berühmteste Android der Nukleus-6-Klasse – ein … Mensch? Und kein Replikant? Jaa! Das Menschliche am Guidomobil ist nämlich, und das ist wohl süß: Er kann kein Englisch! Hihi! Wie niedlich! – Eigentlich ist das doch gar nicht ehrenrührig! Würde mich z. B., gäbe ich Pressekonferenzen, plötzlich ein ausnehmend zierlicher, latte-macchiato-farbener Journalist aus der Namib-Wüste in der geheimnisvollen namibischen Klicksprache der X!hosa! ansprechen, würde ich vielleicht auch hilflos-doof, verzweifelt herumrudernd und pampig  herumeiern, halb hilfeheischend, trotzdem auch etwas trotzköpfig andeutend, ich sei dieser extrem irren, kaum nachzumachenden Klick-Kick-Knix-Sprache der Busch-Leute nun mal nicht mächtig, und das sei auch gut so! Bon, bzw.: gut. – Aber Englisch? Das saugt man doch mit den Pampers auf, oder? Das kann doch irgendwie jeder, schon aus dem Radio oder wegen diesem dauernden Werbe-Denglish! – Tja, Guido aber mal eben leider nicht. Bums, aus, basta! So what? („Na und?“) Hat man als Außenminister vielleicht Dolmetscher zur Verfügung, oder was? Ich muß doch als Schwarzgelb-Verschieber, Steuerhinterzieher oder Versicherungsbetrüger auch nicht Jura studiert haben, um vor Gericht gestellt zu werden!

Daß jetzt hunderttausend Kleingeister, die das Ti-Äitsch beherrschen, sich euphorisch beömmeln, bloß weil sie irgendetwas besser können als Herr Dr. jur. Guido Westerwelle (Mr Westwave, Esq.), finde ich verständlich, aber wenig sympathisch. Anyhow, I felt in love with Guido (= „gleichviel, ich fiel mit Guido in die Liebe“), als ich auf YouTube vorgeführt bekam, wie der fernstudierte Überflieger und Teleakademiker durch eine simple, von einem britischen Journalisten auf Englisch gestellte Frage aber auch schon dermaßen aufs Bodenpersonal reduziert wurde, daß er beinahe zu weinen anfing! War das nicht süß? Doch, wohl, das war süß!

Plötzlich mutierte die übermäßig vorlaute Streber-Hackfresse zu einem maulaffig-verheulten, innerlich kurzbehosten Schulbuben, der des Hausaufgaben-Vergessenhabens überführt wurde: Halb pupertätsrotzig, halb schmollmundig schuldbewusst verrutschten und entgleisten ihm sämtliche teilprivatisierten Gesichtszüge, will sagen, setzte er ein Gesicht auf genau wie damals, als ihn Mutti beim Onanieren erwischt hatte; die kleinen verschlagenen Blauäuglein hinter der Panzerglasbrille huschten panisch wie Guppies auf Brautschau nach Eingebung suchend im Saal umher, Schweißperlenketten umkränzten in Sekundenbruchteilen die quergestreifte Stirn, schamgepeinigt rollte sich der schweiß-gelbe Schlips, das sonst so freche Beißschnütchen öffnete und schloß sich karpfenhaft lautlos, und dann … dann erlebte man ein überaus seltenes Naturschauspiel: Ein Teil des Gehirns („Projekt 18%“!) von Mastermind Wüsterwille fängt notgedrungen an – zu arbeiten!! Man kann das sehen! Man sieht es! He-she-it works! Knarrend und ächzend beginnen sich die Zahnräder zu drehen, mit durchdringendem Quietschen setzt sich die schwergängige Synapsen-Spieldose in Bewegung, lautlos formen sich Worte, werden buchstabiert, tonlos nachgesprochen, verworfen, dann neu formuliert… Man schluckt, sammelt Speichel, Verzeihung, Mund ist so trocken! Oha. Gleicht kommts ihm! Ein Gedanke, ein Ideelein, ein Schimmer-Tierchen. In atemloser Spannung verfolgt die Bundespressekonferenz den rekordbrechenden Denkversuch des Guinnes-Preisträgers! Fünfhundert polyglotte Ohren spitzen sich aufs äußerste: Kommt da noch was? Ja!

Nach quälend anhaltendem Hirnknistern, -knastern und -knuspern krächzt aus dem plötzlich 30 Jahre jünger wirkenden Bübchen-Gesicht, dessen Miene sich dabei zu einem irgendwie Uhu-verschnüffelten, wattig entrückten Übersprungsgrinsen verzieht, ein entschlossenes „….Ääähh…“ heraus. „Well…“ übersetzen die Dolmetscher schon mal. Aber der Außenminister-in-spe („in guter Hoffnung“!) ist noch nicht fertig mit der Pressemeute. Die kriegts jetzt nämlich rhetorisch so fett aufs Butterbrot geschmiert, daß die Schwarte kracht: „…äh….äh… wir sind hier ja, ja, in … äh… Deutschland, und da…, äh…, da sprechen wir Deutsch! Sie da, daheim, Sie sprechen ja da zuhause bei sich ja auch englisch!“ Gut gekontert, finde ich, eloquent und gnadenlos logisch. Seit Hitlers V2 hat keiner mehr dem perfiden Albion gezeigt, wo… dings, äh… („Don’t mention the war!“)

Die Situation ist hochnotpeinlich peinlich, aber erstmal gerettet. Doch hinter Guidos schweißsalbaderter Stirn irrlichtert und nachgewittert es noch. Pinball Wizzard! Es googelt rastlos durch die Synapsen. Guidolein ist ja nicht dumm. Na ja, gut, jedenfalls nicht soo dumm. Daß das jetzt kein Triumpf des Westerwillens war, ahnt er. Irgendwie kommt ihm das Gefühl bekannt vor. Wenn er das Wort kennen würde, würde er es einen Déja vu nennen. Ungefähr so hat er sich kürzlich gefühlt, als seine Rechtsanwaltseltern ihm die Hypothekenschlampe, quatsch, Immobilienmaklertochter als Braut ausgesucht hatten und er gestehen mußte, bereits mit einem Mann verheiratet zu sein. Erwi-hischt!

Ich finde das irgendwie süß. Meine schwulen, intellektuellen Freunde sagen das immer, wenn sie etwas oder jemanden besonders unsäglich finden: „Aber … ist doch irgendwie auch schon wieder süß, oder?“

É… Enfim, sexta-feira chegou e com ela a expectativa pra que chegue também (e rápido) o final do expediente. Aqui na Concrete o bicho está pegando, estou trabalhando em um projeto em Python e como esse é o meu primeiro projeto nessa nova linguagem, ainda tá um bocado díficil conseguir algumas coisas, mas a linguagem é boa, interessante, rápido e faz realmente muito bem tudo aquilo que queremos. Mas nem tudo são flores, no meio do caminho existe além do aprendizado de uma linguagem nova, um projeto inteirinho que eu preciso conhecer, entender, colocar pra funcionar e mais, desenvolver as funcionalidades que me couberam.

Pressão hein…

Enfim, como diz o título, hoje é Sexta-Feira e muita coisa acontece as Sextas… Espero que essa seja bem animada. Vou encontrar com a galerinha, curtir uma ótima noite e amanhã é o dia do Thiago “rueiro” entrar em cena, muito skateboard durante o dia e muita farra durante a noite…

Domingo, espero que faça um sol. Pois se fizer, com toda certeza vai ter aquele downhill nas Paineiras com os amigos… Ainda vou comprar um longboard pra mim, mas enquanto isso não acontece, “dropamos” de “skatinho” mesmo.

Depois, pra quem gosta de códigos e Python, vou comentar sobre o Crawler que estou desenvolvendo para navegar num site de letras de música buscando o conteúdo e guardando no banco…
