I’ve often debated with my male friends about cars. I guess I should probably clarify that bi

I’ve often debated with my male friends about cars. I guess I should probably clarify that bit… I’ve often debated with my male American friends about what makes a car “good.” The uninterested person would say, “Well, as long as it gets me from A to B, it’s good.” And, sure, on a purely pragmatic level, as long as your car doesn’t explode before you get to your destination, it’s served its purpose as a transportation vehicle. My debate with my friends (usually) goes beyond that.

My best example of this sort of thing comes from my friend, let’s call him George. George is a good, old American boy, born in the south and raised on conservative, Christian values. There’s an unfortunate correlation between these characteristics and a fanaticism towards muscle cars. My friend George loves, loves, loves muscle cars. He nearly had a heart attack when he heard that they were coming out with a new Challenger recently. He considers them to be beautiful, adrenaline pumping, powerful works of art. I tend to think they induce adrenalin solely because of our natural aversion to being in dangerous, potentially fatal situations.

See, the muscle car isn’t founded on the idea of ’safety.’ It’s all about power. How much raw power can we stuff into this hood and still have the thing move and overcome the engine weight? It’s about explosive power at the touch of a foot pedal. It’s about torque and hand numbing vibrations. Can we take this car, add a snake to the front, and boost its power even more? Alright! What about the suspension and brakes? They can stay the same right?

What George fails to understand is that not everywhere he will go in one of his precious beasts will lie in a straight path from where he started. If that were the case, then I’d leave him alone. George insists that if I were to go on a date with him, and he showed up in a Mustang to pick me up, I would swoon at the power. I would writhe in ecstasy as we sped along to the monster-truck show he would most certainly take me on such a date. When I suggest that if he showed up with such an obvious display of overcompensation for whatever it is he seems to lack, I would be far from impressed, he reassures me that I would understand, if only I were a male. Despite the blatant misogyny in his tone, I do understand (and I assure you, I’m not a guy). I understand why they like the things, I just feel they’re very misguided.

I was discussing this with my brother the other day, and we decided that it can be described in an analogy. Take a violin: If you took a bow and started wailing on the poor instrument, forcing the strings to screech as loudly as you can, banging the bow on the strings, throwing the whole thing across a room and down stairs, you will undoubtedly get a cacophony of very loud but very unimpressive noise. If, instead, you have Joshua Bell take the same violin (preferably before the former demonstration) and have him play a beautiful concerto from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, you will get something that the instrument was meant to create, something challenging to produce, and something pleasing to the ear. Sure, you could just have a loud, hideous sounding V8 booming from a muscle car, but it would be like a screeching violin. It doesn’t harness the true beauty (as well as the power) that the thing is capable of. It’s just a mess of noise. Instead, you could have just as much power, say the V8 in the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, but have it tuned and played properly. That’s when you get the pupil-dilating purring that the engine is capable of. That would make me go crazy on a date with George, even if it were still to the monster-truck show. Plus, with the proper specifications of that car, I wouldn’t be fearing for my life as we drove with an engine too fast for the car to handle and a turn radius wider than a ’90s Accord.

The fact that most modern muscle cars come from the US makes me wonder what that means about our society as a whole. What are we trying to make up for? Are we just neanderthals, impressed only by brute strength and shiny things? We have this need to be the best in the world, but only when “best” means bigger and badder than everyone else. We build giant stadiums and develop devastating military equipment, but we have one of the worst education systems and health care systems in the industrialized world. Is this a case of poorly distributed priorities, or is this a more profound statement of how we really feel on the inside?

I’m tempted to believe that we are trying to make up for the faults that we have in some way. Sadly, though, that takes admitting said faults, even on a subconscious level. When you live in the best, most liberated, most advanced country in the entire universe, that’s kind of difficult to do. I’d like to think that we are complex enough to have a hidden layer of self-awareness and understanding of our place in the world. In reality, though, we’re probably just stomping around in place, too distracted by the shiny guns, missiles, and televisions to care to think through what should matter.

A turbo-four with V6 power, Quattro all-wheel-drive, and a sleek, squat style are what make the TTS a good all season alternative to a Boxster. The best-in-class interior gives the cabin a perfect balance of both luxury and sport.

Whether you think of it as the most refined muscle car or the most affordable GT, the Corvette provides punch and pace without making you suffer. It feels special because it is not a sedan or a boy racer, though could be slightly more communicative.

With an engine that delivers supercar-level mid-range thrust and a chassis that has good turn-in and confidence-inspiring balance, the Viper almost seems under-priced.

Aston finally delivers beautiful, rare and responsive car in one package. Thanks to the new 4.7l engine and suspension tweaks.
One of my favorite ever cars that I will never get my hands on – although no one else will either

One of my favorite ever cars that I will never get my hands on – although no one else will either – is the Prodrive P2. Most likely, you have never heard of this car. No doubt this is because it was a concept vehicle developed and built by Prodrive in Banbury and Warwick, England. Prodrive is most well known for their involvement in World Rally by being the company that preps the Subaru Impreza rally cars. They also help automakers other than Subaru to upgrade their standard spec cars, notably the Mazda RX-8 and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. But the P2 is an entirely different animal. The basic undercarriage is taken directly from a Japanese-spec Impreza STi and then the engine, suspension, differentials, transmission and body get upgrades that really make this vehicle special.

The engine is a 2.0 liter STi unit that receives a power upgrade to produce 345 horsepower. The biggest difference between this and the regular boxer unit is that the P2 has something called anti-lag to keep the turbo spooled up no matter what speed you are running. This helps the car go from 0-60 in less than four seconds and sound like nothing you have ever heard before (look up the test from Top Gear to really hear what this car sounds like). The anti-lag system on the P2 was derived directly from the system that the WRC car uses and allows for the exhaust to emit flames when the user backs off of the power. That alone is enough to allow access to my dream garage. Spitting flames from the back of a car is very sweet to see, especially at night.

The other big improvement over a normal Impreza is that this prototype uses something called Active Torque Dynamics (ATD). What ATD does in a nutshell is it uses center and rear active differentials to split the torque between the front and rear of the car. This helps to eliminate understeer because when understeer rears its ugly head, more torque is sent to the front of the car. If your car starts to oversteer while on power, then the torque goes to the front to balance out the car and keep everything in check. This allows for some crazy high cornering speeds and extremely neutral and predictable handling. This is the safe supercar for everyone.

And while this P2 doesn’t have the big wings, gold wheels and bright color schemes that normal Imprezas are known for, every part of the exterior looks as if it has been sliced out of a single piece of marble with a ginsu blade. There are sharp edges all over that reminds me some of an F-117 Nighthawk airplane. No, it doesn’t look perfect, but it is distinct, and for a two seat coupe, it looks pretty dang good. They have also included LED tail lights and HID front lights to make the car stand out from all the other traffic on the road. The P2 is a stand out vehicle that if produced, would have retailed for about 40,000 British Pounds (essentially $60,000 although it would probably not really cost that much if it ever did come here, which it wouldn’t).

With the exclusivity of being a one-off prototype model that is a test bed for all the best technology that Prodrive has to offer, the P2 never had much of a chance of becoming a production model. If it did though, it would certainly give many supercars a run for their overpriced lives. The P2: not exactly pretty, but purposeful and an overachiever if there ever was one. There are many cars out there like this, but this is the one that could have become a legend if it were to ever be produced. This is why it is in my top 10 list.

shall we take the Aston, darling?
