Tough economic times call for innovative approaches.

One great option is Twitter. Twitter is evolving as another resource, in addition to traditional methods, for both job searching and recruiting.

HOW DO I USE TWITTER TO FIND A JOB?

Make your Twitter presence “employer-friendly”

Put your job pitch in your Twitter bio (which is 160 characters)

Use a professional looking avatar / picture.

Tweet about your job search

Utilize your Twitter background. There’s lots of space you can use to promote yourself. Don’t know how to create a professional-looking Twitter background? Tweet me and I will show you how!

Include a link to an online CV in your bio.

Establish yourself as an expert in your field on Twitter. It’s important to note that you should not misrepresent yourself. If you’re not an Brain Surgeon, don’t play one on Twitter. As those on Twitter become interested in your content, when employers are looking at you, you’ll have more than just your CV to back up your knowledge and experience.

“It’s about who you know” How do you get to know the right people? It’s not always about who you’re looking for, some people on Twitter are actually looking for YOU. There are many job recruiters (including Ethos) who use Twitter to look for potential candidates. Before contacting a recruiter via Twitter, check them out.

Job search tools & resources. A reactive job search on Twitter probably isn’t the best way to find a job. There are many new Twitter tools and applications to assist with a proactive job search. TweetMyJobs Another tool born out of Twitter for job seekers and recruiters. Follow the hashtag #Tweetmyjobs and visit the website. This is a very simple (and free) tool for job seekers.

You can subscribe to desired job channels and even have new openings automatically sent to your mobile phone. Even better? You can specify which cities you want notifications from.

Also, don’t forget to save your job search on Twitter. Search for “job, Northampton” or “Vacancy Milton Keynes” etc. Of course you can follow our job board which is @EthosTweet

Your next job could be just a tweet away.

If you have used Twitter for searching for a job then I would love to hear your comments.

What?? OK so you don’t have a toddler, but, if you do, you’ll know that phrase all to well from the said book. The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child.

Anyway back to business. I was under the impression there was a recession out there – perhaps I’m wrong. I am astounded that I have not had a single application or enquiry regarding my job ad – neither from here, advertising locally, the press – nowhere, not a sausage … perhaps I was naive to think applications would flood in from highly skilled (any skilled would be something right now!) individuals dying to give me the pleasure of their seamstress knowhow in exchange for hard cash.

It really could give a woman a complex. Luckily I’m fairly thick skinned but after my week, feeling a bit battered having even been rejected by job applicants. And it doesn’t really help my “so much to do so little time” dilemma. So if anyone reading this does know of someone, (I’m even prepared to look outside my locality now) that might fit the bill, give me a shout or get them to contact me direct. On that note I’m taking a well-earned break for two days. Waffle again Monday …

In the wake of Charlie’s departure of South Bend, the sports media has turned thier heads and focused thier attention on providing the masses with posible canidates to coach the Fighting Irish. It hasn’t surprised me at all, that fans, commentators, conversation boards, and columnist have been throwing potential candidates against the wall to see what will stick.

However, the problem with thier “name slinging” is that they are tearing intellegent conversation away from viable coaching options that make sense, to creating a frenzy of unrealistic expectations amoungst the Irish fan base.

Here’s a few names that are hanging off the wall:

• Tony Dungy
• Jon Gruden
• Brian Bilick
• Bill Cowher

Now, I guess anything is possible; however it’s fairly unlikely that these guys would ever consider coming back to the college game. There’s no question, that they are great coaches and would certainly prove to be “huge” front page stories on ESPN and newspapers around the country. But, would anyone truly feel that these guys (while incredible as they are) would make a good “college” head coach?

Right now, Notre Dame needs less coverage of “left-field” candidates like Tony Dungy saying “is there anything less than zero percent chance of that happening?” when asked about the ND Head Coaching vacancy. I really wish the off the wall suggestions would be edited by their producers and editors and start providing viable candidates instead of creating rumors.

However, thats not the case! So, we going to move on to the next group of canidates.

And that’s the “Pipe Dream” coaches. Certainly these coaches could lead the Irish back to prominence, by great recruiting and coaching. But are they viable? Take the emotion out of the decision making. I know….you know, that nearly every coach in the country wants this job and coach would be crazy not to accept an offer. BUT, is that really the case?

These are the coaches that would be crazy not to take the Irish job:

• Patterson
• Stoopes
• Myer

The only problem is that many of these guys are living the dream where they are now. Myer is becoming a legend before our eyes down in Florida and shows little sign of slowing down. He will certainly lose some talent after this year, but the state of Florida is stacked on high school football talent, so it will be a short re-building year for the probable 3 time National Champion Gators.

Stoopes also has little reason to leave Norman, he is the front man for one of the best football universities in the county. Their facilities are incredible, not to mention, the academic ease of getting kids to be able to enter his school. Why would he leave that?

It’s rumored that Patterson just signed an extension with TCU. He has built a big name for himself in Texas, at a school that is coincidently reminiscent of Notre Dame. TCU has very high standards and will not always get the 5-star athlete that they want for their program.

Patterson is my pick for the best of the “probably not going to happen” coaches that will come to South Bend. He faces many of the stressors of finding great athletes who have the character and scholastics to attend Notre Dame.

All three of these guys could take the Irish to the next level, no one questions that. But is it realistic that any of them will actually leave their programs, for the Irish?

Granted it’s hard to determine what’s lip service and what’s not when these high profile coaches say they “are not” interested when asked about coming to South Bend. They can’t say that they are interested publicly while they are preparing for an upcoming game this Saturday through January. However, as history has shown with many of these coaches, they are willing to jump ship if the situation and money is right.

I’ll be the first to say I hope so! But, I’m not getting my hopes up.

According to the 2006 Census the housing vacancy rate in Ireland was at 15%. Rates varied throughout the country with Dublin at 9.7% and rural counties such as Leitrim at 29%!

This is the first look at the spatial distribution of the now vacant properties that have been developed in Ireland since 2006.

This analysis is based on the latest GeoDirectory release (April 2009).

Additional work is underway on a more detailed look at various geographical areas -the Dublin region, commuter towns in the Mid-East and a rural county in the Border region.

Where are the Bank REO’s??
By: Miguel deArcos

For several months now news about how the nation’s current economic crisis is affecting the commercial real estate market has been spreading like wildfire. Warnings about growing defaulted loans and foreclosures have dominated headlines. Troubled assets are becoming more and more common, and real estate investors are on the look-out for the new deals – both off market and on – that are coming available. In fact, according to research firms like Real Capital Analytics, “the volume of troubled commercial properties grew by 122% in the first half of 2009 as approximately $67b of properties became troubled and few troubled situations were resolved.” Loan modifications and sales have only resolved 10% of this distress.

So where are the distressed properties that we keep hearing about? Banks appear to be in a holding pattern when it comes to commercial real estate. Unlike the days of the Resolution Trust Corporation (”RTC”) sale-off, banks today seem reluctant to place their REO properties on the open market, as they are afraid to take a loss. According to Deutsch Bank, property values are down approximately 40% since the 2007 peak. Banks do not appear to be motivated to dispose of properties at realistic prices, yet more distressed properties are on the horizon. Real Capital Analytics reports that “June was a particularly heavy month for new distress, indicating that the pace of defaults does not appear to be slowing.” Banks are prolonging the crisis by refusing to sell their distressed assets. Further, aside from fears over losing money on assets, banks are cautious not to worsen the current economic situation by the flooding of the market with REO properties.

However, advisors within Sperry Van Ness are working with banks throughout the country to advise them on the best disposition solutions, thus encouraging banks will begin to place their distressed assets on the open market. In the last couple of weeks have we seen a trickle of properties become available, and are optimistic that more will become available in the coming months. There are opportunities coming…

In student politics at York University this week, on Monday the YFS held a meeting on a few motions

In student politics at York University this week, on Monday the YFS held a meeting on a few motions including motions to fill three vacancies on the board of directors. Three directors from Winters College, Osgoode College and the Arts all stepped down within in the past month for reasons that are unknown. However, it has been confirmed that one of the former directors graduated from York University recently.

In any case the meeting to elect these three new board members was advertised around the campus, but not to the extent to which other YFS events have been advertised in the past, and not in a student friendly way as seen in the document below. An average student passing by would not take note of such an advertisement. In fact, it is actually a bylaw requirement for this type of meeting to be advertised across the campus two weeks prior to the meeting. This begs the question, would this meeting be advertised at all if it was not a bylaw requirement, considering the lack of student friendly advertising.

In any case the meeting took place on Monday the 23rd of November at 4pm. Motions were passed in regards to a reserve fund for the YFS in case of certain circumstances. However, these circumstances were not defined and thus the use of the reserve money is open to interpretation. Another motion was passed that designated a new presidential commissioner, whose duties are basically those of a personnel assistant to the president of the YFS.

Furthermore, there were three students who applied for the Arts position, Halgan Ahmen, another unknown student and me, Kriss Bacon. Two students applied for the Winters position, Kevin Morris and Tom Cochrane. However, for the Osgoode position only one student ran, Burton Taylor.

The nominees gave a short presentation on why they thought they should be elected. In the arts case the unknown student described his experiences and involvement within the community at York. For myself I described my involvement with the York community based on The York Life project. Halgan Ahmen gave her name and which program she was in. To my second hand knowledge, the votes were 5 in favor of me and 9 in favor of Halgan Ahmen.

In the case of the Winters nominees the debate was much more interesting. Kevin has been a long time active member of the York community but has often taken an opposition stance to the current YFS regime in terms of his association with York Forward. Tom Cochrane has been a dedicated volunteer with the YFS since the start of this school year. At one point it seemed that Kevin had more experience with student governance than Tom. However, this was soon trumped when Krisna Saravanamuttu interjected by suggesting that the Winters student council, of which Kevin is an active member, is “out of touch with Winters students.” Thus this signalled the executives stance on how the voting should go. For much more information on this specific case then check out Kevin’s blog, it’s a very good read. In any case, Tom Cochrane was elected.

As for the Osgoode position, it was filled by Burton Taylor, whose loyalties at this moment are not yet known.

In any case I would much rather have had the students of York choose in a by-election who the new Directors would be, instead that choice went to the YFS board members. Maybe that’s a section of the YFS bylaws that can be an election issue coming this winter. But, in closing The York Life would like to say congratulations to all our new YFS representatives and we hope you do York students proud by representing us.

It’s Thanksgiving time! A time for giving thanks for the blessings in our lives. Since this is

It’s Thanksgiving time!
A time for giving thanks for the blessings in our lives. Since this is a Commercial Real Estate (CRE) blog, I will focus my thanks on that and save the personal stuff for the dinner table Thursday night. So let me share a little bit of what I’m thankful for in the CRE industry as if you own or occupy space, this relates to you too.

I’m thankful for:

•	Making it through the 2008 banking meltdown.
o	I compare 2008 to someone shaking up a snow globe on the financial markets. That in turn effected every aspect of real estate. Lenders, owners & brokers couldn’t tell you which direction was up and everything froze.

•	Surviving the 2009 market correction and bottoming out of CRE values.
o	Values dropped like a stone all year as capital for purchases was/is non-existent and job losses mounted at a record pace. Some positive economic indicators are starting to spike which shows us that we have hopefully bottomed out.

•	A 2010 recovery.
o	Although it will be a long slow road, it is already starting to happen. Small businesses are starting to show signs of life & banks are slowly starting to sell off their toxic assets. With bad debt gone, they should be able to start lending again. Time heals all wounds.

•	Our team of Advisors & staff at SVN/Paradigm.
o	Like Thanksgiving Day we will all likely thank our family for supporting us through the good times and the not so good times. If any of you reading this have ever been to an SVN function or even to our office, you’ll see that we are a (growing) family. I am blessed to be surrounded by such a professional, well educated, morally centric and caring group of people.

In closing, I would like to also say thank you to our clients, colleagues, friends and a special thank you to OUR TROOPS who continue to fight for our liberties everyday.

Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas & have a Happy New Year,

Miguel de Arcos
Managing Director
