H1N1 (Swine Flu) Vaccine

Our New York City office has received a limited amount of the H1N1 vaccine. While supplies last, we are offering this to our members on a first-come, first-served basis.  Priority will be given to members who are at-risk, including:

• Pregnant women and women planning to become pregnant
• Household contacts and caregivers of children under 6 months of age
• Young adults between 14 and 24 years of age
• Patients with a chronic medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, heart or lung disease, asthma, cancer, AIDS, etc.

Members can receive the vaccine on a walk-in basis during regular office hours.  Non-members should call the office to make an appointment. Please note that while the vaccine itself is free, we do charge a small administrative fee.  This fee is covered by most insurances.

Seasonal Flu Vaccine

Because vaccine manufacturers have been diverting their resources to producing the H1N1 vaccine, the entire U.S. is currently experiencing a shortage of the seasonal flu vaccine. We’re sorry to report that we have exhausted our supply of seasonal flu vaccine at our New York office. We will let you know if we receive an additional supply.

As a pro-safety drug- and vaccine advocate, I believe it’s imperative to be able to unequivocally prove that a drug or vaccine will cause no harm, AND be able to show that it offers measurable benefit, before releasing it to market. This is especially important when we’re dealing with pregnant women and young children.
Neither is true for the flu vaccine during pregnancy, and even less so for the H1N1 vaccine when given to pregnant women.

Flu vaccine manufacturers clearly indicate that safety and effectiveness of their flu vaccines have not been established for pregnant women and nursing mothers. Ditto for their H1N1 vaccines.

Naturally, the standard comeback is that miscarriages are commonplace, and surely have nothing to do with the vaccine. However, to simply dismiss these events as “coincidences” is a serious mistake.

Perhaps some of the 20 women on one of the blogs would have miscarried anyway, but when a number of women have healthy, uneventful pregnancies up until they’re injected with a vaccine, and then suddenly miscarry, it most certainly warrants investigation!

Brennyn had her 4 month vaccination shots today. She handled the 2 month ones much like a sumo wrestler being pinched by a toddler- so a grimace with a giggle. Easy though she was more tired and ate more for a day or two.

Still, I felt bad this time around since she’s been so sick. My poor little baby girl, fever gone but still sounding like James Earl Jones attempting soprano. I ask if she should even be getting her shot but the nurses are merciless. “Oh ya, bring her in!” they cheer “you can dangle her by the toes while we poke and prod your phlegmy gaggy monster!’

Or something like that.

Bal decided to come along for the ride today. He’s never seen either of the kids shots and since work was slow for him (US Thanksgiving) he thought he’d come help. Which was great since he waited with Brennyn while I snuck over to Starbucks for a latte. Yah, much more relaxed with the 2nd child’s shots. Prick, sting, wail, booby snack, whimper, sleep. Sleep. More sleep. There are bonuses to vaccination days…

So Bal holds Brennyn while I sip my latte. She’s all like “Dude, where are we? What are we doing? Who’s the strange lady making goo-goo eyes at me? Can I eat your hat brim Daddy?”

Then poke.

Wail. For like 2.5 seconds. Looks at me. Looks at her daddy. Looks at strange lady coming in again.

“Dude, you better not be doing what I think you’re about to…”

Oh, wow.  It’s almost worth getting three painful shots in my legs to get a mouthful of Infant’s Tylenol Concentrated Drops.  Mom gave me a thingy of it when we got home from the doctor’s office, and it was great!  I’ve never had this sensation on my tongue before . . . what a rush!

I slept for a long time, and then I pretended to be crabby.  Mom fell for it and gave me another squirt.  Oh, yes.  I could eat this stuff.  Dad said this isn’t what cherries really taste like.  That’s too bad for cherries because this tastes awesome.

Nov. 24 (Bloomberg) — Adrian Gibbs, the virologist who said in May that swine flu may have escaped from a laboratory, published his findings today, renewing discussion about the origins of the pandemic virus.

The new H1N1 strain, which was discovered in Mexico and the U.S. in April, may be the product of three strains from three continents that swapped genes in a lab or a vaccine-making plant, Gibbs, and fellow Australian scientists wrote in Virology Journal. The authors analyzed the genetic makeup of the virus and found its origin could be more simply explained by human involvement than a coincidence of nature.

Their study, published in a free, online journal reviewed by other scientists, follows debate among researchers six months ago, when Gibbs asked the World Health Organization to consider the hypothesis. After reviewing Gibbs’ initial three-page paper, WHO and other organizations concluded the pandemic strain was a naturally occurring virus and not laboratory-derived.

“It is important that the source of the new virus be found if we wish to avoid future pandemics rather than just trying to minimize the consequences after they have emerged,” Gibbs and colleagues John Armstrong and Jean Downie said in today’s eight- page study.

Bird Flu Pandemic - November 25, 2009

Last week, the WHO confirmed that an H1N1 mutation had been discovered in Ukraine.

 

New reports from Iowa and North Carolina are raising concerns that the deadly H1N1 swine flu mutations that have been confirmed by the WHO in Ukraine, Norway and elsewhere have already reached the United States.  In Iowa, a report that doctors are seeing “very heavy, wet hemorrhagic lungs, lungs with a lot of blood in them” in H1N1 patients is creating concerns among health experts that the deadly Ukraine H1N1 has already spread there. 

In addition, a report of Tamiflu-resistant H1N1 swine flu in North Carolina is raising questions about the ability of medical authorities to combat H1N1 if thousands of people do start dying.  If deadly H1N1 swine flu mutations have already reached the United States, what does that mean?  Doctors in Ukraine have been reporting that victims of H1N1 there are experiencing violent hemorrhaging in their lungs. As the patients near death, their lungs reportedly become as “black as charcoal” and literally begin to disintegrate.  Will this start happening soon inside the U.S.?

The news report causing the most concern today is the one about H1N1 patients in Iowa.  Commenting on a dramatic spike in H1N1 deaths in Iowa, Dr. Gregory Schmunk told KCCI news that what doctors there are seeing ”is very heavy, wet hemorrhagic lungs, lungs with a lot of blood in them.”

Hemorrhagic lungs that are filled with blood? That sounds precisely like what is taking place in Ukraine.

Last week, the WHO confirmed that an H1N1 mutation had been discovered in Ukraine. This H1N1 mutation involved a receptor binding domain change, and it is apparently causing the H1N1 virus to become much more virulent.

Just like the new report in Iowa, many victims of H1N1 in Ukraine have been experiencing violent hemorrhaging in the lungs.  Temperatures inside the lungs of patients in Ukraine have been reported to be as high as 135 degrees Fahrenheit.  As the patient near death, the lungs turn to mush and literally become as black as charcoal.

With the winter months coming faster, more and more people are prone to get colds, allergies and flu-like symptoms.  So here are ways to boost up your immune system without popping pills!

1.  Eat lots of nutritious foods high in Vitamin A like colorful fruits and veggies as well as zinc, found in seafood, nuts and whole grains.  Yes, it’s the holiday season and there will be plenty of amazing dishes set on the table, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t help your immune system by eating just a few extra fruits, veggies, seafood and grains! 2.  Layer and dress warmly!  Simple as it sounds, not a lot of people follow that critical “Mom rule”… Either because of fashion or laziness, people end up going through the winter months with nothing but a sweater and jeans.  Unfortunately, that doesn’t work!  Without warmth, the body will be susceptible to viruses and other seasonal destroyers.

3.  Keeping up with hygiene.  I know the winter months are tough to get your cleaning mode on; however, this period is the most critical.  With everyone sneezing and coughing around you, be sure to wash your hands regularly.  At home, keep the countertops as dust-free as possible, especially since winter is dry season and dust bunnies come out of hiding.

The best thing about visiting the doctor today was the wallpaper.  It was my two favorite colors: black and white!  Uncle Grant makes Grace say ‘Yippee’ when she sees black and white wallpaper, but I just keep to myself.  He keeps talking about the Tiger Hawk.  But this looks nothing like a tiger.  Uncle Grant is so weird.

Then they stuck me with needles!  Three of them!  Ouch!  This is the worst thing ever!  Mom made a sad face when they poked me, but she didn’t stop them.  Dad rubbed my tummy but he didn’t do anything either to make it better.

The doctor said that I got a pneumococcal conjugate, diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis, rotavirus and some other things that I can’t imagine are any worse than have three giant needles jabbed in my legs.

My name is Ilsa Vega from South Jersey who has been blessed with two beautiful granddaughters. I would like to share with you my youngest granddaughter, who is two months old, amazing story.

My granddaughter, who was born in June of 2009, had the opportunity of being breast feed for only a few weeks due to her mother having complications.

It only takes to plant the seed and knowledge will grow which will lead to taking actions to save a child. My son and daughter in-law decided to go with the natural remedies to feed the baby. Again my son and daughter in-law took the baby for the second visit with the Pediatrician. Aspirin kills 400% more people than H1N1 swine flu

Did you catch that? The 16,500 figure for deaths each year doesn’t even include over-the-counter painkiller drugs! If you add in those numbers, you’re probably looking at something closer to 40,000 Americans kills each year by these drugs. And that makes these drugs 1000% more deadly than swine flu (because 40,000 is ten times greater than 4,000).

So, all of this H1N1 stuff is sort of freaking me out. We just learned of a friend of my sis-in-law’s who’s got the virus, and we saw the news last night of three more people at Duke Hospital who died from it. And here we are with a baby who can’t be immunized against this jerk of a virus or even the regular flu for two more months!

I know how tempting it is…babies are freaking cute, we want to touch them, kiss them…breathe in their youthfulness. I get it. But now that I’m a mom with a non-immunized baby, I worry about those touches and kisses. Without being rude, I’d like to ask for O’s sake as well as all other babies and kiddos out there, touch where there’s fabric covering their skin and hold off on the face and hand kisses. Sock-covered toes will enjoy your smooches just as much!

To ward off unwanted germ sharing, one mommy friend uses the ol’ “I wouldn’t touch him; he’s got a bit of a bug.” Other moms I know have complained of relatives putting baby’s hands in their mouth or sticking their own fingers in baby’s mouth to help with teething. Yikes!

When we were at the Christmas parade this weekend, C and I overheard a really cool exchange. This guy’s little son wanted to kiss this gal’s baby who was standing next to us. Get this…the guy actually asked first before his son started grabbing away! The mom said “yes” but directed the little one to touch her son on his sock. No awkwardness and mom protects baby. Win-win.

This goes down as one of those things that I’ve learned since having O. I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve kissed many a baby on the head/hand without a second thought. Now I wouldn’t dream of it! You never know what virus or bug is lurking in your system; better safe than sorry.

So for all of you who are going to be around little ones this holiday season, especially if you’re flying or have a kid in school/daycare…please be considerate…wash your hands and lay off the kisses. If you feel the need to set your lips on something sweet…make it grandma’s pumpkin pie instead!
