I woke up in the middle of the night Sunday with a startling, half-awake realization: This offseason, instead of trading multiple dudes to the Rangers to acquire Scott Gomez’s suffocating contract, why didn’t the Canadiens just trade no one and sign Marian Gaborik? I know there’s some injury concern there, but geez, the dude’s 10 times the threat Scott Gomez has ever been, Gomez’s contract is just as massive, you keep Chris Higgins this way, and you end up with a dude who’s already scored more goals in 25 games this season than Gomez has in every season of his career except one.

Yep — half-awake Me is a better GM than Bob Gainey. Man is that dude fired after this season…

Anyway…the Pens remained impressive last night, beating the Rangers on the road with Henrik Lundqvist back in goal, despite a continued power play malaise and repeated inability to cover Gaborik with seven guys at all times. We knew it going in, but how clearly is Gaborik the only remotely threatening player on this Ranger team? Who else would you even think about covering in a playoff series against the Rangers? Like, Vinny Prospal? I feel like he should be the captain and star player on an expansion team somewhere; he’ll be on the Las Vegas ThundercrushDogs for their 2012 season opener, once Phoenix moves.

Mike Rupp’s inconceivable offensive season continued with a hat trick, including the game-winning goal and an empty netter to give him 8 goals on the year, shattering his former career-high mark of 6 goals in a season (and doing so after only 28 games).  Sidney Crosby added two more goals of his own, flanking a play where he bumped Gaborik in the Pens’ crease after a whistle and drew MSG chants of “CROSBY SUCKS!” I will henceforth refer to the “goal-Crosby sucks chant-goal” combination as a “Crosby Sandwich,” because that’s precisely the sort of lame-ass Crosby term that would really piss off other Atlantic Division fans, but then it would keep happening, continuing to piss them off even more. For as hated as Crosby is by the Flyers, Rangers, and Capitals, the guy really couldn’t own the Flyers, Rangers, and Capitals more.

On a both good and bad note, I keep forgetting that Chris Kunitz is out of the lineup. It’s great that the Pens have the scoring depth to notch 13 goals in two games against a division foe despite a depleted lineup, but it’s also a little disconcerting that the absence of a so-called top-line winger is so insignificant. Hopefully he’ll be back botching Crosby’s one-timers thus frustrating Crosby and getting him to keep shooting more and racking up goals in no time.

Also, why have the Pens played like 12 more games than every other team in the conference? Is there a stipulation in the schedule that the Flyers must always have 5 games in hand on the Penguins every season to ensure that you always get more initially excited when you look at the standings than you should? Just another example of the league’s clear anti-Crosby bias…

Da Ranjahz sign Vaclav Prospal for 1/$1.1. Obviously intended as the replacement for Zherdev, and familiar with Torts’ system and with something to prove. No exactly a building block for the future but should prove useful for a single year and the price is entirely reasonable. It’s an odd sort of thing with the Rangers though; they have a persistent tendency as an organization to make a long series of theoretically good moves which ultimately add up to less than bupkus. We shall see.

Hier à 19 h avait lieu la séance de première ronde du repêchage de la Ligue National de Hockey 2009 à Montréal. C’est avec enthousiasme que nous avons vu les Islanders de New York repêcher John Tavares, l’attaquant dont on entend tant parler. Ce fût ensuite au tour de Victor Hedman, le défenseur de 6 pieds 6 pouces d’être appelé par le Lightning de Tampa Bay qui compte maintenant de la relève à l’Attaque et à la défense avec Stamkos et le nouveau venu Hedman. Après les deux premiers choix, il était prévisible de voir le nom de Matt Duchene de Brampton être sélectionné au troisième échelon par les anciens Nordiques de Québec. Trois rangs dont on pouvait prévoir la sélection à mon avis.

Vraiment une belle brochette pour cette édition 2009 du repêchage, présenté à Montréal. Présentement, le nom de Louis Leblanc et de Gabriel Dumont fait jasé au Québec, car tout les deux Québecois, ils ont été repêchés par le Tricolore! Un rêve d’enfance réalisé! Enfin, j’y reviendrai dans un article consacré au repêchage du Canadien de Montréal. The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have traded the rights to forward Vaclav Prospal to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Nashville’s seventh round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft (previously acquired by Tampa Bay) and a conditional pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, according to General Manager Paul Holmgren.

“Vinny really didn’t express much of an interest in coming back and playing for us next season,” said Holmgren in making the announcement. “His heart is elsewhere.”

Prospal, 33, recorded four goals and 10 assists for 14 points and six penalty minutes in 18 regular season games for the Flyers this past season. He added 13 points (3G,10A) and six penalty minutes in 17 playoff games as the Flyers advanced to the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals.

Sigh. I am sad to see him go because I liked the chemistry Vinny had with Danny. But he was kind of fizzling out in the end. Guess he just wanted to go back home.

I wish Holmer would make some big moves soon! We need to resign Carts and Randy Jones (also known as RJ on this blog) asap. We can get rid of Umbie…oh and resign Scottie Upshall kthxbai.

Bolts Trade Prospal To Flyers

Lecavalier-St.Louis-Prospal, Alfredsson-Spezza-Heatley… deux très gros trios qui ne cesse de nous impressioner depuis le début de l’année. Ils peuvent sans conteste changer un match à eux seuls. Par contre, depuis une semaine, un trio surpasse tous les autres de la LNH et c’est celui formé par Daymond Lankgow, Jarome Iginla et Kristian Huselius.

Ils ont mené les Flames à quatre grosses victoires cette semaine, permettant aussi à Mike Keenan de signer sa 600e victoire comme coach. La victoire la plus marquante a surement été celle de 9-6 contre le Lightning… assez incroyable, 15 buts marqués dans la partie ! Iginla et Huselius ont tous deux réussis le tour du chapeau. Aussi, hier, dans une victoire de 5-3, cette ligne a récolté tous les buts.

Keenan a donc finalement trouvé une combinaison gagnante après avoir joué un peu avec ses trios tout le long du début de la saison. Le perdant là-dedans est sûrement Alex Tanguay qui se trouve relégué à la deuxième unité offensive…

Trois Québécois dans la top 10 !

Trois joueurs québécois se trouve actuellement dans le top 10 des meilleurs marqueurs de la LNH ; il s’agit de Vincent Lecavalier (premier avec 51 points), Paul Stastny (neuvième avec 40 points) et Martin St.Louis (dixième ex-aequo avec 39 points).
