<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Like always, there is a valid reason for the prolonged silence in this space. This time I am not getting away with the excuses of hectic work schedule, because thats never a new thing in our industry. I got myself enrolled for the Winter Funk&#8217;09 conducted by <a href="http://www.sdipa.com/" target="_blank">Shiamak Davar&#8217;s Institute for the Performing Arts</a>.After delaying the plan for more than a year I finally made up my mind to join for the same. Getting trained by professionals who got trained by <a href="http://www.shiamak.com/" target="_blank">Shiamak</a> himself has been a really wonderful experience. Last weekend turned out to be even more exciting for me with participation in the Hyderabad 10k run representing Shiamak&#8217;s <a href="http://www.sdipa.com/VAF/right.asp" target="_blank">Victory Arts Foundation</a>.</p>
<p>VAF is a non-profit organisation with a mission to spread the power of of the performing arts to bring joy to the less privileged, specially challenged, visually impaired, terminally ill children and young adults, and all those infected/affected with HIV/AIDS, committing to making dance a meaningful experience for everyone.</p>
<p>So these days more time has been set aside for activities apart from work, which means less experiments in the digital space. Will get back soon with more updates on character setup techniques.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I grew up, hoping to be one of two things.  A cop or an Archeologist (thanks, Indiana Jones!), and these at first seemed attainable.  Arguably the archeologist one still is.  I even graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Criminal Justice.  After failing to drift right into a police job, I joined the military.</p>
<p>Spending four years in the army was no cake-walk.  It also wasn&#8217;t too bad at times.  The 16 months of combat took its toll on my mental stability and anger management.  I went for disability and ended up walking away with 60%.  The choice I made of admitting my problems and seeking disability has rendered my dreams of ever becoming a cop virtually nonexistent.</p>
<p>I started the art foundation in response.  I&#8217;m no painter, but I love writing and film and appreciate all aspects of art.  I&#8217;ve written films, screenplays, and even shopped around a screenplay (failing, I might add) since being home.  This is my plan for the future.  (may do one of those Archeology vacations and hopefully fight off Nazis)</p>
<p>The problem with disability (mentally and/or physically) and admitting you have them, resounds throughout your life.  As a 60% vet, I cannot apply for police departments.  The state has the highest, at 50 percent acceptance.  Even then, I don&#8217;t think they&#8217;d allow me, with my depression and anxiety in.  These issues will affect large numbers of veterans with problems.  They have to balance their issues with job opportunities.</p>
<p>A large portion of combat vets seek jobs in law enforcement or the likes. Those jobs suite their needs and personality.  If they admit their issues, then they&#8217;re basically out of luck.  Finding other meaningful work, will be tough.  That&#8217;s why I hope to at least help  alleviate some stress with this foundation.  There will be thousands of disenfranchised veterans with little motivation when dreams disappear before their very eyes.  Something needs to change, whether it be laws or employment standards.  To deny veterans jobs, is a crime.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I&#8217;m not going to go over the stats, the news stories, the army&#8217;s stance, etc.   Those are already covered enough in the media and blogging world.  My best friend who survived Fallujah, Najaf, and other major campaigns, a silver star recipient, has known three people who&#8217;ve committed the act.  By way of gun and car crash.  As of this post, no one I know has killed themselves, unfortunately I don&#8217;t think that will hold.</p>
<p>I personally suffer from major depression, permanently brought on by wartime experience.  (50% disability for that alone)  I&#8217;ve struggled with it since I was 18, (which I found amazing the VA awarded me the disability, I was honest with them) caused by repeated blows to my head during a terrible fist fight.  I haven&#8217;t been the same.  Suicide&#8217;s always a way out I guess, but it&#8217;s the end all.  Final.  I&#8217;m fairly certain that it won&#8217;t ever be a serious thought in my head.</p>
<p>This &#8216;epidemic&#8217; has just begun.  As the war(s) close down and soldiers filter back into the U.S. and society in general, there will be more self bloodshed.  56,000 vets died in Vietnam, during the conflict.  I&#8217;ve heard more than double that killed themselves in the ensuing years.  Those statistics will probably carry over into our conflict.</p>
<p>The VA, Army, and other groups have programs in place, but there&#8217;s more to be done.  Our foundation will help to alleviate some of the issues, including mine.  The most important roadblock is the stigma attached to admitting you&#8217;ve got a problem.  This is so strong it will prevent even the most self sufficient vet into backpedaling away from help.  I was basically told I was &#8220;weak&#8221; by a close army friend the other weekend, because I had issues, or at least admitted them.  It stung, but it wasn&#8217;t enough.  It&#8217;s too late, I&#8217;m seeking help.  Somehow that issue needs to be overcome and rectified, once that happens, healing can begin.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">Uno sguardo furtivo ed ecco che scopro che la maggior parte delle finaliste di Miss Italia 2009 (anche se ricordo parecchi &#8220;notevoli&#8221; precedenti) sono esteticamente parlando davvero poco avvenenti, o per usare un eufemismo ci sono parecchie &#8220;cozze&#8221; (molti volti sproporzionati che farebbero rivoltare Winkelmann). Una ricerca su Google, ed effettivamente scopro di non esser l&#8217;unico ad aver notato questa strana anomalia, c&#8217;è anche chi grida all&#8217;ennesimo scandalo o che magari parla di eventuali capacità &#8220;nascoste&#8221; delle nostre ragazze.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Ma rimangono &#8220;belle&#8221; domande: a chi mai gioverebbe questa &#8220;volgarizzazione&#8221; e &#8220;messa in critica per carenze estetiche&#8221; di un concorso che dovrebbe essere per poche elette, in cui troviamo ragazze bruttine e spesso ai limiti dell&#8217;anoressia? Chi sceglie queste ragazze (conosco parecchie persone che in una serata qualsiasi pescando tra la folla troverebbero di meglio)? Miss Italia dovrebbe rappresentare la bellezza delle nostre donne, perchè dar loro questa pessima immagine quasi le restanti fossero tutte obese e barbute?</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Inutile far notare che quivi mi limito a mere considerazione estetiche che non vogliono intaccare la dignità di alcuno ma che si limitano ad una mera esposizione ed argomentazione delle mie idee in piena conformità all&#8217;art. 21 della nostra Cost.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Davvero un&#8217;annosa questione quella che mira ad incrementare sensibilmente le visite, anche quelle non uniche, di visitatori, internauti, verso la nostra piattaforma virtuale che indifferentemente sia blog, sito personale, spazio su myspace&#38;co, forum o portale. Fondamentalmente credo che il metodo principale sia quello, appunto, di scrivere un articolo od un post che rechi in maniera chiara, netta ed equivocabile nel titolo la dicitura &#8220;come aumentare le visite del proprio blog, sito o portale&#8221;, e che abbia all&#8217;interno qualche sinomino o keyword. Beh, il tempo è galantuomo chi sa che non mi dia ragione e che il traffico verso questo lido aumenti.</p>
<p>P.S.: Se vuoi davvero migliorare la tua piattaforma punta alla qualità della stessa invece che perder tempo sperando che Google ti dia una risposta o soluzione definitiva.</p>

I spent the past week in Butte, Montana, for the annual meeting of the Vernacular Architecture Forum. The first thing I learned is that it is very hard to get to Butte, as there are only two flights into the airport each day. A rain delay in Philadelphia led to an 8.5 hour layover in Salt Lake City. I turns out the Mormons know how to do tourism. They run a free shuttle from the airport to Temple Square where you can take a tour, visit the museum and two historic houses, listen to a concert, and get something to eat. Interestingly, although people were much shorter in the past, both Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were quite tall, something pointed out to me on two separate occasions.</p>

<p>Butte itself, and southwestern Montana generally, are really fascinating places. If you take American Material Culture II next spring (or even if you don&#8217;t) you will hear lots about my trip.  Museum visits included Mai Wah (a former Chinese noodle parlor) and the Dumas brothel, not to mention the whole town of Nevada City, which was created much like our own Farmers&#8217; Museum.  Just as importantly, the VAF plans tours of privately owned buildings and collections that aren&#8217;t normally open to the public.  This year these including all sort of buildings related to the mining of cooper and gold, as well as the residences and community buildings that supported the miners.  I even got to tour a new 3,000 sq. ft. house built inside a grain storage bin!</p>

<p>One of the really interesting things about this area is the relative blurring between present and past.  Mining was still going on in Butte through the 1980s, and the whole town suffers from environmental and human degradation as a result of it.  As people there think about preserving the material remains of their past, they are also trying to figure out how to live in the present and the role that heritage tourism may or may not play.  The keynote speaker at the VAF conference focused on the dangers of romanticizing the gritty history of Butte to make it more tolerable. In places like Virginia City, which hit its gold peak in the 1860s, on the other hand, it is hard to discern the real (authentic) from the created tourist environment.   Below is a picture of tourist cabins created by Charlie Bovey in the 1950s from military barracks he brought to Virginia City and decorated with false fronts painted with the names of real businesses that used to exist in the town.  Ironically, this village has now reached an age that it is historic in its own right!</p>

<p>Eccone alcuni punti chiave:</p>
<p>Alla conferenza stampa promossa ieri sera dal Consiglio nazionale dell&#8217;Ordine dei Giornalisti il presidente del Consiglio ha esordito ringraziando i promotori per aver avuto l&#8217;occasione, rara, di parlare in televisione con gli italiani. Per cominciare siamo noi a ringraziarlo per questa rara opportunità: sappiamo che lui non possiede 3 televisioni di proprietà diretta più quelle del servizio pubblico acquisite in quanto presidente del Consiglio, e quindi non gli è permesso di essere presente in tv&#8230;[...]</p>
<p><strong>Berlusconi: ci occuperemo del contratto dei giornalisti anche se spesso sono birichini. E quindi qualche volta facciamo i birichini anche noi.</strong> <br />
<em>Peccato abbia avuto poco tempo per approfondire questo particolare. Avremmo gradito che ci spiegasse quali le rispettive &#8220;birichinate&#8221;&#8230; Si riferirà ai giornalisti &#8220;birichini&#8221; che si permettono di provocare ansia&#8230; Le sue &#8220;birichinate&#8221; saranno probabilmente quelle di aver tuonato contro i giornalisti sgraditi.</em></p>
<p><strong>Berlusconi: in questi ultimi vent&#8217;anni abbiamo ereditato una situazione catastrofica. Dal raddoppio del debito pubblico ad una giustizia e una pubblica amministrazione che rallentano il Paese.<br />
</strong><em>Anche da questo punto di vista concordiamo con Berlusconi: non essendo lui mai stato prima d&#8217;ora Presidente del Consiglio non è affatto responsabile dei ritardi e delle disfunzioni che questo Paese ha accumulato negli anni.</em></p>
<p><strong>Berlusconi: le intercettazioni vanno assolutamente ristrette.</strong><br />
<em>Ci dispiace sinceramente non l&#8217;abbia fatto prima. Oggi saremmo ancora in piacevole compagnia di persone rispettabili come Giuffre&#8217; e Provenzano&#8221; o i campioni di Calciopoli (o Tangentopoli).</em></p>
<p><strong>Berlusconi: il nucleare rappresenta la svolta energetica per il Paese. Purtroppo la sinistra ecologista e ambientalista hanno sempre remato contro.</strong><br />
<em>Vorremmo ricordargli che nel 1987 venti milioni di italiani (e quindi non solo i Verdi) hanno votato un referendum contro il nucleare&#8230;</em></p>
<p><strong>Berlusconi: scandaloso il dato dell&#8217;evasione fiscale in Italia.</strong><br />
<em>Vorremmo ancora ricordargli, come puro esercizio mnemonico, una sua frase recente (aprile 2008) nella quale affermò che &#8220;le aliquote elevate giustificano l&#8217;evasione fiscale&#8230;&#8221;</em></p>
<p><strong>Berlusconi: troppe trasmissioni diffondono pessimismo e ansia</strong><br />
<em>Siamo sicuri che molti nelle tv e nei giornali (speriamo non tutti) recepiranno le preoccupazioni del premier e ci mostreranno le immagini dei tanti italiani che alla quarta settimana sono tutti felici e hanno ancora un sacco di soldi da spendere.</em></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Mobbing. Het woord is u wellicht niet onbekend, maar misschien denkt u, net zoals ik, in eerste instantie aan het pesten van één werknemer door andere werknemers. En niet aan het wegpesten van een werknemer door de werkgever. Want daar gaat deze film over. En neen, <em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373930/">MI PIACE LAVORARE </a></em>is geen door het <em><a href="http://www.vaf.be/">VAF</a></em> medegefinancierde in productie zijnde voorlichtingsfilm van een bekende Vlaamse regisseur, gebaseerd op waar gebeurde verhalen op de werkvloer van zijn eigen bedrijf, maar een Italiaanse film uit 2004.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Objectief en cinematografisch gezien is de film geen echte topper, ik zou er een gematigde recensie kunnen over schrijven, maar het verhaal is op zijn minst interessant en dat kan soms genoeg zijn om een film goed te vinden. Een toegewijde boekhoudster, Anna, wordt na  vele jaren  van hard werk, inzet en loyauliteit na een fusie door de bazen van het andere, voor haar vreemde bedrijf, buitengepest omdat ze volgens die bestuurders niet meer paste in het gefusioneerde bedrijf.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Dit pesten is van het meest subtiele niveau dat je je kan voorstellen, maar daardoor net zo smerig. Het begint met het aanwerven van een nieuwe, jonge collega, die haar voorgesteld wordt als hulp. Zich van geen kwaad bewust steekt Anna met de meeste toewijding veel energie in het wegwijs maken en inwerken van deze nieuwe kracht. Na een tijdje merkt ze echter dat de nieuwe werkneemster meer vergaderingen en onderonsjes heeft met haar overste dan zij ooit gehad heeft. Anna krijgt steeds minder verantwoordelijkheid, belangrijke taken worden haar afgenomen en het gaat zelfs zo ver dat essentiële informatie voor het uitvoeren van haar job haar simpelweg onthouden wordt of ze er niet de nodige technische ondersteuning voor krijgt. Het gevolg is dat ze fouten maakt, waarvoor ze dan weer berispt wordt. <em>&#8220;Ze doet het niet goed meer, ze raakt haar aandacht kwijt, ze kan niet mee met het nieuwe bedrijf,. ze is niet geïnteresseerd in nieuwe technologieën, haar fonts zijn te groot..&#8221; </em>dat zijn de klachten die volgen. Hoe meer Anna dit probeert aan te vechten en uit te leggen wat er effectief in het bedrijf aan de hand is en de vinger op de zere plek probeert te leggen, hoe meer dit zich tegen haar keert.  Zelfs haar persoonlijk leven wordt er in betrokken. En werd ze in eerste instantie nog gesteund door haar eigen oude baas, is die ondertussen zodanig gebrainwasht en onder druk gezet door de bestuurders van het fusionerende bedrijf dat deze niet anders kan dan partij kiezen voor de leden van de raad van bestuur. Hoe meer Anna zich afzet en probeert de toestand te keren, hoe onsympathieker dit haar maakt en hoe negatiever ze wordt afgeschilderd <em>&#8220;Echt iedereen klaagt er over hoe onvriendelijk je bent! Zie je dan zelf niet hoe je hier rond loopt!&#8221; </em>Op de lange duur raakt Anna haar bureau kwijt, moet ze controles uitvoeren op de werkvloer waardoor ze zich ook helemaal onsympathiek maakt bij andere werknemers en uiteindelijk wordt ze op staande voet ontslagen. <em>Allemaal haar eigen schuld, ze heeft het zelf gezocht.</em></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Ik zat paf na het bekijken van deze film. Het had mijn verhaal kunnen zijn en van vele anderen, daar ben ik van overtuigd. Dit spel heeft men met mij gespeeld! Nooit gedacht dat ik mezelf, grote mond en zeker geen doetje, het slachtoffer van mobbing zou durven noemen. <em>Doe nu niet belachelijk</em>. En de meesten onder u geloven dat natuurlijk ook niet, daar ben ik wel zeker van, want dat is net het geraffineerde aan dit spel. Alles wat je doet en zegt in een situatie als hierboven beschreven keert zich genadeloos tegen jezelf. En alle betrokkenen zullen het staalhard ontkennen.  Zeggen dat het inbeelding was. Probeer het maar eens te bewijzen. Enkel zeer naaste collega&#8217;s en goede vrienden weten hoe de vork aan de steel zit en geloven je. Voor een aantal anderen zal er wel geen rook zonder vuur zijn. Ik denk dat zelfs nog heel af en toe wanneer ik andere verhalen over mobbing lees, &#8216;t is heel menselijk.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em>&#8216;Kom je hier <a href="http://blogderzuchten.wordpress.com/2008/04/02/werkloos/">nu nog eens</a> over zuchten</em>&#8216;, zullen een aantal mensen al dan niet terecht opmerken. <em>&#8216;Ben je er nu nog niet over? Heb je het <a href="http://blogderzuchten.wordpress.com/2008/04/02/werkloos/">hier nu nog niet genoeg</a> over gehad?&#8221; </em>Net zoals met het verlies van een geliefde of treurige echtscheiding, na x aantal maanden mag je het er niet meer over hebben. En ik kan daar inkomen. Veel vrienden hebben minstens even erge dingen meegemaakt en die hun leven gaat ook verder zonder veel gezeur of depressieve momenten en negatieve gedachten. Ik heb daar bewondering voor, die sterkte. Of ze er ook écht over zijn of het gewoon beter kunnen verbergen (of denken dat ze dat moeten doen) dan ik, is een andere zaak.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Maar net nu die ex-firma zoveel media-aandacht krijgt &#8211; <em>elke dag wordt je op tv geconfronteerd met een product waar jij onrechtstreeks je medewerking aan verleend hebt</em>,<em> je bij betrokken voelde en fier op was </em>- wordt de wonde nog eens extra opengereten. En dat voor het hele komende tvseizoen. En dan moet ik inderdaad vaststellen, neen, ik ben er niet over. Vooral niet omdat het exact zoals in deze film gebeurd is, wie de achtergrond kent zal zelfs denken dat ik dat scenario zelf bedacht heb en de film verzonnen heb, zo treffend is de gelijkenis. En neen, dat gelooft u alweer niet, ik weet het, en mijn oude baas en die ene nieuwe baas zou ik echt wel moeten kunnen verge(t)(v)en want de ene werd in een situatie geforceerd waar er niet anders meer opzat dan me te ontslaan en de ander houdt zich enkel  creatief bezig en weet volgens mij zelfs niet eens wat er met mij exact gebeurd is. Die denkt wellicht nog steeds dat ik uit vrije wil en in de beste verstandhouding weggegaan ben. Maar de anderen, die hebben er alle schuld aan. En bij momenten kan ik er echt niet over omdat het zo onrechtvaardig is.  Blijf ik er zo razend kwaad op. Hadden ze me vandaag moeten ontslaan om economische redenen wegens de aankomende recessie, ik had het begrepen. En dan had ik even mijn schouders opgetrokken, tja, niks aan te doen. Maar nu niet.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Het zien van deze film doet me echter ook beseffen hoe vuil het spel was. Dat ik in eerste instantie blind was en het allemaal veel te veel &#8220;ondergaan&#8221; heb. Veel te inschikkeling geweest ben en had moeten vechten. Aan de andere kant, wat had het me opgebracht? Niemand wil toch verderwerken met een medewerker die eiste &#8220;&#8216;t Is zij of ik&#8221;.  Ik had ook niet zo met het idee moeten leven dat deze fijne job de laatste job van mijn leven zou zijn. Dat mijn broodje gebakken was. De vanzelfsprekendheid. En ik weet nu wel zeker dat, als ze heel even nog een nanoseconde aan mij denken, het met het idee is <a href="http://blogderzuchten.wordpress.com/2008/07/07/in-dubio/"><em>&#8220;Pff, ze had twee weken nadien al een andere job kunnen hebben die ze afgeslagen heeft&#8230;&#8221;.</em></a> Ik zit er mee, zij niet. Zij moeten momenteel geen inspanning doen om op hun vijftigste nog ergens opnieuw proberen aan de slag te gaan. Van nul te beginnen, je weer te bewijzen en te tonen wat je waard bent. Je laten keuren, beoordelen. Je opnieuw op te werken tot een bepaalde loonschaal, of tevreden te zijn met minstens de helft minder, en dus ook  ondertussen de financiële gevolgen te zien overleven.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Ja, u heeft gelijk, &#8216;t is klagen en zagen en u hoeft het ook niet te lezen. Duizenden mensen zitten met mij in hetzelfde schuitje. En miljoenen mensen hebben het slechter, eigenlijk heb ik het zelfs nog getroffen. Laat me maar stellen dat dit (alweer) voor mezelf een stukje bijdraagt tot het verwerkingsproces dat helaas tot mijn eigen grote ontstemming nog steeds aan de gang is. Smijt het eens in de groep, nog eens (=zet het nog eens op je blog). Dan moet je het er alweer niet met je vrienden of ex-collega&#8217;s over hebben. Zet je er over, het leven gaat door, laat dat achter je, negatieve gedachten helpen je niet vooruit.  Het is onomkeerbaar, wat gebeurd is is gebeurd. Optimism is a moral duty en die dingen. Morgen gaat het alweer beter. En versturen we de zeventachtigste sollicitatie. Nog een paar maanden verder en werkgevers kunnen me dank zij alweer <em><a href="http://www.deredactie.be/cm/de.redactie/mediatheek/1.416431?mode=popupplayer&#38;clickedMediaId=http://www.deredactie.be/cm/de.redactie/mediatheek/1.416431&#38;fullscreen=false">de nieuwste maatregelen van Frank Vandenbroucke</a></em> gratis en voor niks aanwerven. Als dat geen goed nieuws is! Maar zelfs dan willen ze misschien geen eigenwijze vijftiger met een eigen mening.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Maar kijkt u toch maar eens naar de film. Daar loopt het namelijk wel nog goed af.</p>

<p>La domanda, in seguito alla lettura di <a href="http://www.corriere.it/politica/08_novembre_11/firme_referendum_grillo_3dadb2b0-b004-11dd-981c-00144f02aabc.shtml" target="_blank">quest&#8217;articolo</a> del Corriere, sorge spontanea: come è possibile che su circa 1,5 milioni di firme depositate ne siamo state considerate valide meno di un 1/3?</p>
<p>E&#8217; mai possibile che con tutto il clamore che è stato fatto non siano stati istruiti per bene i soggetti preposti alla raccolta delle firme?</p>
<p>La faccenda appare incredibilmente strana&#8230; Il magistrato che il Corriere cita come presidente della Commissione del referendum, è un certo Corrado Carnevale. Sarà mica <a href="http://www.antimafiaduemila.com/content/view/9772/78/" target="_blank">questo Corrado Carnevale</a>, od è forse un omonimo?</p>
<p>Il presentimento che il <span style="color:#000000;">VDay</span><span style="color:#000000;"> II</span> sia stato un inutile tentativo di dare una scossa al sistema, è forte. Certo che il futuro dopo il famoso <a href="http://deywos.wordpress.com/2008/11/10/lammazzablog-analisi/" target="_blank">Ammazza Blog</a>, promette davvero bene, talmente bene che molto probabilmente da ora un poi l&#8217;unico VDay in cui combineremo davvero qualcosa sarà il <span style="color:#ff00ff;"><span style="color:#000000;">V</span>alentine<span style="color:#000000;">Day</span></span>.</p>
<p>Ed in tanto sul blog di <a href="http://www.beppegrillo.it/2008/11/firme_legge_pop.html" target="_blank">Beppe Grillo</a>, fino a qualche tempo fà caratterizzato dalla massima &#8220;<span style="color:#ff6600;">Loro non molleranno mai, noi neppure</span>&#8220;, Beppe molla &#8220;<span style="color:#99cc00;"><em>Mi rimetto alla decisione della Cassazione, non voglio neppure discuterla, ne prendo atto.</em></span>&#8221; cercando di spargere speranza sull&#8217;iniziativa Parlamento Pulito.</p>
<p>Beppe ma a chi vuoi prendere per i fondelli, dov&#8217;è quella foga che ti caratterizzava al Vday II? Che fine ha fatto il vero Beppe Grillo? Avrà forse ragione <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hTp-q5Ry70&#38;feature=related" target="_blank">Paolo Barnard</a>?</p>

<p>Stamattina ho letto quest&#8217;articolo su <a href="http://punto-informatico.it/2468674/PI/News/camera-manda-avanti-ddl-anti-blog.aspx" target="_blank">PuntoInformatico</a> inerente il famoso, benché in versione rivisitata, <span style="color:#ff6600;"><span style="font-weight:bold;">dll AmmazzaBlog</span></span>, ennesimo tentativo liberticida per stroncare la nemesi principale dell&#8217;ormai attuato <a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_di_rinascita_democratica" target="_blank">Piano di Rinascita Democratica</a>; del resto quando <a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Licio_Gelli" target="_blank">Gelli</a> affermò &#8220;Il potere ce l&#8217;ha chi detiene il controllo dei <span class="new">media</span>&#8221; non conosceva la rete.</p>
<p>L&#8217;articolo è già di per se esaustivo, ergo mi limiterò ad una sola analisi. Come estrapolato da PI:</p>

<p>Ora, mi ero autorassicurato circa l&#8217;impossibilità che il mio blog situato su WordPress.com ne potesse essere in qualche modo interessato, essendo i banner inseriti autonomamente dalla stessa piattaforma per sostenere i costi legati agli ottimi servizi offerti. Tuttavia in seguito a lettura più approfondita, ho notato che un punto è parlare di <span style="font-family:mceinline;"><span style="color:#ff6600;">o</span><span style="color:#ff6600;">rganizzazione imprenditoriale del lavoro</span></span> ed un altro, come avevo erroneamente ritenuto precedentemente, è confonderlo con <span style="color:#ff6600;">organizzazione e/o attività di impresa</span>. <a href="http://www.antoniodipietro.com/2008/11/no_allammazza_blog.html" target="_blank">Antonio Di Pietro</a> a proposito limita il tutto, in seno alla necessarietà dei requisiti, alla presenza di banner, ma qui credo se ne vada al di là. &#8220;<span style="color:#ff6600;">Organizzazione imprenditoriale del lavoro</span>&#8221; significa strutturare la propria attività (o lavoro, termini scambievoli) sul blog con metodo economico (d&#8217;impresa), a prescindere dallo scopo di lucro (le associazioni noprofit difatti sono imprese, operano con metodo economico anche se non hanno finalità lucrative), ma tesa anche solamente al procacciamento di entrate remunerative (horror vacui!); quali possono essere richieste di donazioni od anche solo pubblicizzazioni (anche senza controripartite) di prodotti con consigli agli acquisti.</p>
<p>La situazione è grave. Prossimamente proporrò qualche scialuppa di salvataggio, semprebenchè non mi sbagli (come spero) con la mia analisi.</p>

<p>E&#8217; pur sempre il lavoro più antico del mondo, ma mi domando cosa possa realmente spingere una donna a fare questo lavoro? La sete di denaro o qualcos&#8217;altro&#8217;altro? Premesso che comunque non si tratta delle classiche squillo da strada, spesso schiavizzate, ma di bellissime donne che comunque decidono di farlo per professione quando potrebbero avere sicuramente altre opportunità lavorative.</p>
<p>Un lavoro dove non c&#8217;è amore, ma solo sesso. Dove non c&#8217;è intimità ma solo la costrizione mentale del &#8220;ti pago, e quindi fai ciò che ti dico&#8221;. Dove ci si ritrova nell&#8217;enfasi ad ascoltare &#8220;dolci parole&#8221; di sconosciuti dei quali non si conosce il nome, e che non possono essere selezionati: dal ciccione al magrolino, dal bellissimo al bruttissimo&#8230; tutti uguali purchè paghino!? Un lavoro che potrebbe lasciare anche brutti fantasmi&#8230;</p>
<p>Prima almeno le si trovava in case specifiche od in periferiche strade urbane, ora con l&#8217;avvento del web 2.0 le si può scegliere tra una miriade di siti da catalogo, vederne le foto, prenotarne i servizi, acquisirne l&#8217;intimo, &#8230; , e tutto per soli soldi&#8230; che angosciosa situazione.</p>

<title><![CDATA["Io non sono (sfortunatamente) napoletano" ]]></title>

<p>Ogni qual volta ho esaltato la democrazia ne ho sempre anche evidenziato l&#8217;aspetto, per così dire, negativo: il semplice fatto che in un sistema votino tutti non indica che la scelta maggioritaria sia necessariamente la migliore ma che è solo la più giusta&#8230; stesso discorso vale per la sacrosanta ed inviolabile libertà d&#8217;espressione (art. 21 Cost), quivi però il risvolto negativo è ben più evidente: far parlare tutti significa dar rilievo (e non pertinenza, per l&#8217;amore del cielo) anche a chi in ben altri contesti sarebbe per fàtica fatìca ed ovvi motivi (totale non conoscenza ed immedesimazione dell&#8217;argomento) ostracizzato. Un esempio è il ritrovarsi un con <a rel="nofollow" href="http://iononsononapoletano.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">blog </a>di pessimo gusto, che sfacciatamente si dichiara satirico (semmai ne avesse la minima collocazione lessicale, è dire che è pure di creazione italica -<a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satira" target="_blank">satira</a>-), e che, ammantato da xenofobismo ingiustificato verso connazionali a cui si deve molto, mira a creare luoghi comuni quasi come dovesse necessariamente trovare capri espiatori (succede ora con gli extracomunitari, prima con i meridionali ed ancor prima coi schiavi, etc&#8230;) da insultare, onde magari sfogare qualche complesso. Anche se, ad onor del vero, sono profondamente rimasto colpito dalle eccellenti argomentazioni impreziosite da bassorilievi d&#8217;eloquenza floreale che le mie pupille non &#8220;assaporavano&#8221; da tempo, tags come: feccia, merda napoli, napolecane, napolecani, napoletame, napoletami, napoletani, napoli merda&#8230; (<a href="http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/5008/immaginennnnsd1.jpg" target="_self">vedi immagine</a>) non possono che non estasiarci nell&#8217;avere una simile autorevolezza con cui discutere e confrontarci.</p>
<p>Iniziamo con alcune delucidazioni. Napoli prima dell&#8217;Unità d&#8217;Italia, era una delle &#8220;capitali d&#8217;Europa&#8221; (all&#8217;altezza di Londra e Parigi); i napoletani avevano una ricchezza pro capite (oro) il doppio rispetto all&#8217;Italia stessa (vedasi famoso signoraggio cavouriano ai danni della Prima Banca Italiana, il Banco di Napoli,  dovuto al &#8220;furto&#8221; di 443 milioni di lire-oro, all&#8217;epoca corrispondenti ad oltre il 60% del patrimonio di tutti gli stati pre-unitari messi insieme), aveva una delle migliori università a livello mondiale, la Federico II, la più antica università statale e laica del mondo (Eberhard Horst, <em>Federico II di Svevia</em>) e numerosi centri d&#8217;eccellenza in ambito scientifico e tecnologico: a Napoli abbiamo avuto la prima nave a vapore nel <span class="mw-redirect">Mediterraneo</span> (1818), la prima linea ferroviaria italiana (1839), il primo ponte <em>sospeso</em> in ferro realizzato nell&#8217;Europa continentale (1832), la prima illuminazione a gas in Italia (1839), il primo <span class="new">osservatorio vulcanico</span> del mondo, sul Vesuvio (1841), aveva la fabbrica metalmeccanica di <span class="new">Pietrarsa</span> (1840), etc&#8230; credo sia inutile continuare ribadendo la necessità di un revisionismo storico a riguardo: i &#8220;pecorari&#8221; erano altri, non noi.</p>
<p>A ciò si aggiunga il <a href="http://cronologia.leonardo.it/storia/a1864e.htm" target="_blank">Piemontismo </a>, la violenta repressione dei napoletani che combattevano contro un tiranno ingrato (<a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigantaggio#Il_dibattito_storiografico">Brigantaggio</a>) ed uno splendido intervento di Beppe Grillo (<a href="http://www.ilbrigante.com/modules.php?name=News&#38;file=article&#38;sid=14796">link articolo completo</a>):</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Sono venuto a chiedervi scusa a nome di quella parte d&#8217;Italia che vi tratta da mafiosi e camorristi. Sono venuto a chiedere scusa ad una Regione bellissima e martoriata, da dove Vittorio Emanuele è scappato con la cassa ed ha mandato Cialdini. Cialdini ha fatto decine di migliaia di morti in questa regione qua. Sono scappati i Borboni<em></em>, è arrivato Cialdini: un attimo prima i campani erano sudditi del Regno delle Due Sicilie, il giorno dopo, il giorno dopo erano Briganti. La tecnica è sempre la stessa, quella delle parole il giorno prima sei suddito, il giorno dopo sei Brigante, e quando sei Brigante può venire la Polizia, possono usare il manganello e e qui avete inventato una cosa che ancora non c&#8217;era in Europa, il <em>manganello consapevole</em>, che avvicina le istituzioni alla gente. [...] Se io fossi campano, agirei come hanno fatto aldilà dell&#8217;Adriatico, in Kosovo, dove una piccola nazione di due milioni di individui ha fatto un referendum ed hanno ottenuto il riconoscimento della propria indipendenza. Bene, forse oggi è arrivato il momento di giudicare come lo Stato italiano vi ha trattato fino adesso, di fare un referendum e staccarvi da Roma! [...] &#8220;</p></blockquote>
<p>Napoli ha ricevuto come documentato da stampa italiana e non, tra cui Saviano (Gomorra), i rifiuti tossici di tutto il Nord Italia, da <span class="news-body-text"><span>imprenditori disonesti che hanno sfruttato le occasioni di risparmio offerte dalla camorra </span><span>per arricchirsi e sopravvivere. Senza i martiri campani forse le imprese dove lavorano</span></span> oggi tanti anti-meridionali non ci sarebbero più, l<span class="news-body-text"><span>a camorra infatti ha fatto risparmiare loro capitali astronomici (saldi dell&#8217;80%), proprio loro che oggi lavorano avendo sulle coscienze la sofferenza di centinaia di migliaia di persone martoriate da tumori e malattie legate all&#8217;altissimo inquinamento. Ma su questa vicenda è già stato detto e scritto tanto, credo di aver reso l&#8217;idea inutile proseguire oltre.<br />

<p>In merito ai tassi di criminalità non mi pare di ricordare nel PreUnità una Napoli &#8220;Bronx&#8221; rispetto alle altre città italiane, anzi la camorra fungeva da &#8220;Robin Hood&#8221; &#8230; Il fenomeno &#8220;Camorra&#8221;, così come lo conosciamo oggi, sorge dal II Dopoguerra, ed è di difficile ed ardua analisi, vi basterà sapere che è cagionato da motivazioni dovute principalmente dal problema del Mezzogiorno (causato dal Piemontismo).</p>
<p class="spip">In merito alla mentalità: la veracità, l&#8217;entusiasmo ed il cuore partenopei sono noti ed apprezzati da molti (ed aggiungere anche i famosi &#8220;sciupafemmine&#8221;) anche se animati da una forte contraddizione. Come si rileva in maniera paradisiaca <a href="http://www.lavocedifiore.org/SPIP/article.php3?id_article=1361" target="_blank">in questo articolo</a>, dal quale trarrò uno spunto, la società napoletana è formata da due società che si contrappongono, quasi vi fossero due distinte popolazioni: una netta minoranza moderna che aumenta la fruizione di beni culturali, che vive in una imprenditorialità moderna e una popolazione, e la maggioranza, che scivola sempre più nell’incultura nel <em class="spip">tribalismo familistico</em>. Sono due popolazioni che vivono nello stesso quartiere, stessa strada, stesso palazzo ma anche due linguaggi diversi, due interpretazioni della vita, del lavoro, della società, del costume, della morale totalmente dissimile. Questa situazione fu ben descritta da Vincenzo Cuoco nel 1821 nella sua <em class="spip">Storia del Regno di Napoli</em> infatti affermava: &#8230;<em class="spip">che sbaglia chi considera come una nazione napoletana, in realtà sono due: distinte tra loro due secoli e due gradi di clima..</em> aggiungeva ‘ <em class="spip">..la prima non vede la seconda perché ha lo sguardo rivolto a Londra o Parigi</em> (oggi parleremo delle grandi capitali mondiali, da New York a Tokjo). Dualità, dopo secoli, rimasta non solo invariata ma rafforzata dalla distruzione del tessuto urbano e culturale operato dalla ghettizzazione dell’immenso ed amorfo hinterland della periferia napoletana (dal casertano ad oltre). In definitiva nell’area napoletana abbiamo una società moderna evoluta economicamente e culturalmente ed una arretrata, arcaica e medievale in cui l’unica modernità accolta è la fruizione di modelli simbolici della società consumistica e televisiva, ed è proprio in questa che l’illegalità è la forma di auto-regolamentazione dei conflitti interni accettata e che viene confusa ed etichettata erroneamente come immagine simbolo della napoletaneità&#8230; quasi come si pretendesse di etichettare tutto ciò che ci circonda basandosi solo ed esclusivamente sull&#8217;eccezioni negative.</p>

<p>Personalmente dipingo (per uno showcase delle mie opere <a href="http://deywos.deviantart.com" target="_blank">cliccate qui</a>), attività che svolgo occasionalmente vuoi per sfogo vuoi per necessità di esprimermi in forme diverse dalla scrittura. Un campo, quello artistico, per me totalmente nuovo: conosco poco d&#8217;arte, di tecniche e così via&#8230; sono insomma uno di quelli che dipinge e basta, cercando di raggiungere la massima spontaneità e libertà possibile. Non conoscendo molto sulle community d&#8217;artisti ho fatto delle ricerche su internet cercando di trovarne una specificamente diretta a pittori, scultori, fotografi, etc&#8230;, che mi permettesse sia di creare un profilo gratuito completo dignitoso (piccolo blog con immagini di dimensioni reali, video, etc&#8230; un po&#8217; come la piattaforma di blogging su cui sto scrivendo ora) e che non arrancasse diritti sulle opere esposte che devono appartenere solo ed esclusivamente all&#8217;artista in qualsiasi forma e modo. Le mie aspettative di ricerca sono fallite in quanto gli unici servizi soddisfacenti che ho trovato sono a pagamento e tra l&#8217;altro con costi, che personalmente ritengo in base alle spese di server e cms, alti&#8230; A quando una vera community di soli artisti finalizzata verso scopi liberalitari (e non di lucro)??? Siamo nell&#8217;epoca dell&#8217;atrofizzazione collettiva ed è di vitale importanza permetterci in piena libertà di esprimerci e di innovare senza limiti alcuni, in luoghi opportuni dove tali capacità possano evolversi e perfezionarsi: vuoi da pittore con veloci gesti forieri di luce e di ombra scaraventati sulla tela, vuoi da scultore con le forme dinamiche e sensuali dell&#8217;argilla, vuoi da fotografo con l&#8217;arte fiera che disdegna l&#8217;uso di tecniche informatiche, vuoi da computer grafico con cgi che rendono il futuro, vuoi con tatuatore con segni marcati della nostra essenza verso il mondo, &#8230;</p>
<p>Mi auguro di non aver cercato bene sulla rete. Se qualcuno conosce qualche buona community mi faccia un fischio.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>The lawn was mowed fresh, the baselines were drawn and the crowd started rushing in for the ultimate showdown. Vijay Amritraj vs students of GRD SCIB the fixture read, a face-to-face, for two hours. The battle was fierce with the students throwing a barrage of questions across the net and Vijay carefully and skilfully producing amazing volleys of answers that left everyone spellbound. It was a field day for the master.<br />
“Win means so much to you because you lose,” said Vijay Amritraj to the enthusiastic bunch of students who wanted to know about the success and defeat. “Road to success is in believing yourself by working with dedication, determination, discipline and with what you call divine intervention, success is yours.”<br />
“In India, we cherish participation which is a good thing in a regular basis but it is not a good thing in sport. West follows that wonderful saying ‘Winning is not everything but it is the only thing’ so there is no room for the second best,” he said motivating the students to do their best. He pointed out that though India has become one of the biggest economies of the world we still lack in sports. “We need to broaden our horizons above the regular school and college education.”<br />
The next was the all exciting rapid fire round where the carefully sewn questions shot were beautifully smashed with the racquet of humour and high wit by this Tennis legend known for his gentle manners and big heart.<br />
As the face-to-face came to an end and Amritraj rose to leave the hall it was a standing ovation and the score board read ‘Game-set-match- Vijay Amritraj’.</p>
<p>Excerpts from the interview:</p>
<p><em><strong>How has tennis evolved from the 80s, 90s to today?</strong></em><br />
Tennis has changed dramatically. I think, to a great extend what happened was that the racquets started to change. Nobody arrested the growth of power racquets. So all of a sudden we started to lose the skill in the game and it became a power game. So in the last 15-20 years we have made the balls heavier and the court slower to counteract the advancement of the racquet.</p>
<p><em><strong>Unlike your time, everybody is a professional in today’s tennis. How has it changed the game?</strong></em><br />
It is advantageous to a point because your quest for excellence is greater. If you and I are professionals, I’ve to work so hard to beat you and you have to work hard to beat me. Professionalism makes you work harder, because it is your job and you are not doing it for fun. So the standard rises.</p>
<p><em><strong>Where is Indian tennis heading to?</strong></em><br />
We have our peaks and valleys very regularly in our sport. Now, Olympics will be another get-together to know what will happen. But the whole thing is how we plan our future. Prakash and Rohan are in their twenties. It is important to pick kids in the next generation in the late teens and then the young teens. There should be a constant flow of players to the sport and we should train them.<br />
What we do have in India today is incredible opportunity. When we were playing there were no tournaments in India. Today there are 52 tournaments in India. So we need not travel far to play, we can do it here.</p>
<p><strong>Who can be termed as the best player of all time?</strong><br />
I’ve always said it is very difficult to compare generations. Champions would be champions of any generation. In my generation the best were Borg, Mc Enroe and Conners, if they were given the tours today they will be the best today. If Rogger was given the tours to play when we were playing then he will be the best then. It is hard to say whether Navaratilova is better or Steffi Graf is better. It should be seen as champions create championship, irrespective of time.</p>
<p><em><strong>Does the popularity of cricket undermine the importance of other sports?</strong></em><br />
No, it is a matter of choice. If we say there is no money in other sports because cricket takes all the money, it is absolutely not that way. It is true that there are a lot of companies who are interested to sponsor cricket because of the exposure they get on TV. But they are not investing in cricket or for its future. On the other hand there are lot of companies willing to invest in sports. There is plenty of money to go around. The issue today is not whether cricket is taking all the money but how to use the available money in the right way.</p>
<p><em><strong>What should be done to develop Indian tennis?</strong></em><br />
There is so much we can do. Not just tennis, sports in general. We should be looking at 2016 today and should be training for that, not for 2012. We have the ability to do it, the money to do it and we as Indians will get the best.</p>
<p><em><strong>What is the best thing about Vijay Amritraj foundation?</strong></em><br />
I think the most important thing about VAF is that we are helping the most needy children in India. More so it&#8217;s been a community event. Even in the US it brings a lot of people together to enjoy a weekend but at the same time realise we are giving, and in giving we receive.</p>
<p><em><strong>There is a tri-colour flag on your chest&#8230;</strong></em><br />
Oh yes, I wear my flag to every event &#8230;irrespective of where I’m on the globe &#8230;and it&#8217;s a great feeling. Having played Davis Cup so long back and wherever I’ve played I’ve flown the flag and played the anthem.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Alhoewel we in september subsidies willen aanvragen bij het Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds, wordt er druk naar andere fondsen gezocht. Aangezien we een period film willen maken die zich in de jaren 40, 60 en uiteindelijk vandaag de dag afspeelt, wordt het dus niet makkelijk om dit rond te krijgen. Alleen al qua kostuums en decors, it gives me serious nightmares!!! Eveneens, in HD filmen blijkt toch niet echt goedkoop te zijn. We zijn dus aan onze sponsor ronde begonnen. De film moet er echt super uitzien, anders kunnen we hem beter niet maken. Alle ideeën zijn m.a.w. zéér welkom <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' />  </p>

<p>Mi stavo loggando al blog quando ho scovato un&#8217;interessante <a href="http://lucandrea.wordpress.com/2008/05/30/il-sito-di-ubuntu-e-fatto-con-windows/" target="_blank">news</a> riguardo al sito ubuntu.com in merito ad alcune immagini (nulla di che &#8220;esteticamente&#8221;) create ed editate tramite Adobe ImageReady da piattaforma difficilmente Linux. Ne approfitto per sparare sulla Croce Rossa: è per me totalmente inammissibile che il sito ufficiale di supporto di Ubuntu.com (http://ubuntuforums.org/) utilizzi vBulletin quando vi sono validissime alternative open-source (Smf, Phpbb3. MyBB, etc&#8230;). Accetterei le considerazione del professionista che usa Photoshop invece che TheGimp, Autocad invece che QCad, etc&#8230; , ma trovo francamente contraddittoria la presenza di vBulletin.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Computers and Fieldwork]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p style="text-align:justify;">After being diverted and delayed for 24 hours due to bad weather in Chicago, I returned late last night from the 2008 annual meeting of the Vernacular Architecture Forum in Fresno, CA, where, among other things, I was elected to the board of directors, to thunderous applause. At least that’s how I remember it.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">At recent VAF conferences, there have been anxious discussions about the status of fieldwork and the utility of digital technology. These have not usually been brought together until this year, when it happened in three separate sessions, including both of the ones in which I was a panelist (incidentally, does anyone else feel that it’s time for us to extend the number of time slots for sessions from 3 to 4?).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">In her discussion of the Gaspe field school, Tania Martin observed, quite pragmatically, that all the new digital gizmos we have at our disposal are only tools, with particular strengths and weaknesses, and that it’s up to us to understand how and when they are useful, and when the old ways are better. Immediately after Tania’s sensible and seemingly uncontroversial remark, two of the other panelists  were both compelled to point out that they didn’t think too much of new technologies in the context of fieldwork, pointing out that they require electricity, for example, and that the visual qualities of hand drawing are superior to CAD drawing.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">I suppose this is true as far as it goes, but why do VAF participants still feel they need to advertise their skepticism (or worse, their ignorance) about digital technologies in general? Film cameras require a complex chemical process to make a photograph but that doesn’t seem to bother anyone. We need to call a moratorium on analog posturing at these meetings, like bragging that we don&#8217;t have a cell phone. It’s irritating, unproductive, and takes time away from more sensible, thoughtful conversations about our work that are sincerely open to new possibilities.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">This conversation might be easier if we re-focused the discussion away from particular technologies, or tools, and toward research activities. The question need not be: is CAD better or worse than ink-on-mylar? It should be: when does CAD help me do my work?</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The two techniques that came up in this context on Saturday were CAD and laser scanning. Laser scanning is a form of “remote sensing,” or measuring a thing without touching it. The technology makes use of a spinning laser and a measuring device that is attached to a computer. A technician sticks the device on a tripod, sets it to run, and walks away. For a few minutes, the laser whips around the room, recording distances at regular intervals and passing the results along to the computer. With enough measurements, the system can create a good representation of the space via a “point cloud,” or a series of measured points that can be translated into a 3-D model in CAD software. With the best devices, the point cloud can be dense enough that it captures quite refined details, like molding profiles and door knobs.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">It’s a cool technology, especially for developing models of very complex spaces or ornate details, both of which would be extremely laborious to measure by hand. It’s a fantastic way to record the spatial characteristics of a building or a sculpture, for example, and probably the best way to capture, say, the ornate carving on a capitol. The process is time consuming, however, requiring a skilled technician to translate the points into planes and curves. It is, for the moment, expensive. It also fails to record color, and lacks the resolution to pick up cracks and other subtle changes in wall surface that can be important evidence in old buildings. It is not, in short, a replacement for looking carefully. It is a mathematical representation of a building’s formal characteristics that does not make analytical sense of it. If we define fieldwork as a process of understanding a building through recording it, laser scanning is not a great tool for fieldwork.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Clearly, however, it has enormous potential as part of a larger enterprise that includes close looking and careful annotation. In a complex building with many changes, a knowledgeable fieldworker will be required to make sense of how it developed over time and relate that information to the model. The newer, and simpler, the building, the more complete a representation the laser scan becomes. It is surely not a way to record the Peyton Randolph House in all its complexity but it might well capture most of what we want to know about, say, a modern warehouse, or a Target store.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">It would be marvelous to have a scan of a building in hand before doing the analytical fieldwork that we still see as fundamental to our scholarship. If a technician can be given the task of making a scaled model, from which one can generate careful scaled plans, sections, and elevations, a field scholar can concentrate on annotating the building with descriptions, notes, etc. I might also add other kinds of documents to the model, such as photographs, allowing it to become the digital framework upon which I hang my analysis.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Modeling, in general, would only ever be one piece of the documentation puzzle. It is a means of representation, not a means of recording. Laser scanning makes modeling simpler, and perhaps makes fieldwork easier, but is not a substitute for fieldwork any more than board drafting is a substitute for field measuring.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">And so we return to drawing. Drafting, whether by hand on a board or in a CAD program, is a technical skill. There is no romance to it, nor has there been since the professionalization of architecture in the nineteenth century defined the production of construction drawings as manual wage labor. CAD programs certainly reflect the technical nature of this process and perhaps we are right to resist market-driven definitions of our work.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">On the other hand, CAD does bring the production of clear, clean, competent drawings within reach of even the clumsiest of us. We all love to look at a beautiful, hand-drawn illustration, such as the ones by Cary Carson and Chinh Hoang in “Impermanent Architecture” and Tom Hubka’s in Big House, Little House. But the ability to produce such images is a very rare skill. We can’t all be David Macaulay and we delude ourselves if we think otherwise. For most of the drawings that most of us need to produce, a CAD plan is likely to look better than a hand-drawn one, and can be completed much more quickly.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Some of us, to be sure, will continue to derive enjoyment from drawing with ink on a board but for most of the VAF, and for most of our students, it is foolish to imagine that ink-on-mylar has any future beyond a romantic hobby. Those who can draw beautifully will continue to do so, and my hat is off to them. The rest of us will be better served by learning to use the computer.</p>

&#8220;Fly Me to the Moon&#8221;, dat bij ons eind januari in wereldpremière ging, is de eerste volledig voor digitale 3D geconcipieerde animatiespeelfilm.  Naast Stassen zijn ook Víctor Maldonado en Adrián García voor &#8220;Nocturna&#8221; (Spanje) en Marjane Satrapi en Vincent Paronnaud voor &#8220;Persepolis&#8221; (Frankrijk) in de categorie voor Beste Europese Regisseur genomineerd.<br />
In België, waar de film in een beperkt aantal bioscopen draait, die uitgerust zijn voor digitale 3D projectie, gingen ondertussen al ruim 55.000 bezoekers kijken naar het verhaal van drie vliegjes die toevallig betrokken geraken bij de eerste maanlanding.<br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>My Dad just told Jacob and I about a comment he received on his <a href="http://mseyfang.edublogs.org/">blog</a> this morning about the Octavio appearing on the popular morning TV show Sunrise. It seems that it was mentioned on the &#8220;Pete&#8217;s Gadgets&#8221; segment as an Australian-designed iPod accessory. It even gets a mention on the <a href="http://au.lifestyle.yahoo.com/b/sunrise/1743/vaf-research-octavio-1-speaker-for-ipods/">Sunrise website</a>. Dad caught the end of the program, and saw the Octavio sitting in the background. Interestingly, Dave (<a href="http://lifekludger.net/">lifekludger</a>), who alerted Dad of this, actually did not know if the slim contraption sporting an iPod was indeed an Octavio. Looks like we better post some photos of my prototype Octavio real soon.</p>
<p>PS. If anyone happens to have any footage of the Pete&#8217;s Gadgets section, or saw the  episode of Sunrise I would be interested to hear what they said.</p>
