De Haagse band Kane is volgende week dagelijks te gast in het ochtendprogramma van Giel Beelen op Radio 3FM. Ter promotie van de nieuwe CD ‘No Surrender’ zal de band elke dag live een nummer van het album spelen. De CD is vanaf vandaag te beluisteren op de website van 3FM. Het album ligt vanaf 27 november in de winkels.
Op 30 november geeft Kane een exclusieve showcase voor 3FM. Komende week worden daarvoor kaarten weggegeven aan luisteraars van de zender. Het miniconcert zal worden uitgezonden in het radioprogramma ‘That’s Live’.
Medio december geeft Kane een eenmalig concert in de Franse wintersportplaats Val Thorens. Op de website van televisiezender RTL5 kunnen belangstellenden een reis boeken waarbij het concert is inbegrepen. RTL5 gaat ook een prijsvraag organiseren waarbij kijkers de reis kunnen winnen.

To many, Val Thorens is all about ski resorts and skiing. In fact, that is the reason why many tourist flock to Val Thorens in the snowy Alps in Europe. But there is actually an ice driving circuit there, and is one of the secrets of Val Thorens. Then came along the  memorable Top Gear episode showing the hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond slugging it out on the tracks with old  rear wheel drive vehicles against the likes of French Formula star Olivier Panis on a 4wd hatchback. One does not even have to fancy a guess as to who won, but it was one of the best Top Gear episodes ever.  Now, not only is Val Thorens about skiing, it is also about racing on snow and ice.

Racing on asphalt circuit may seem easy, but it does require a certain amount of driving skill. There are several race tracks open to the public around the world, and wannabe Schumachers frequently crash on the barriers even before they can even complete a single lap on their cars. Driving a car down town is one thing. Racing a car in a circuit is another.

Now, imagine racing on a circuit layered with ice and snow. If Olivier Panis gets a work out driving on an ice circuit, then 99% of people who know how to drive will have to really practice hard to get it right. Forget bringing an old Ford Cortina on an ice racing circuit, because even with snow tires it won’t work. The best weapon here is a 4 wheel drive lightweight hatchback with all the modifications in every inch of the car. Load it with brake kits, HRE rims, K&N Intakes, Kelford camshafts, Larini strut braces ,Techart wheels, Tein coilovers and every other performance part which improve handling, braking, acceleration through the corners  and then the car will be much more adequate for roughing it out in a snow covered track.

Mercifully, the track also serves as an ice driving school, and is perhaps a much better way to get a feel of driving on ice before actually racing on it. So before gunning that brand new Porsche Cayenne on the ice track and putting the pedal to the metal, it is prudent to first learn how to do it right and Val Thorens is just the place for that.

VAL THORENS, het hoogste gelegen skioord van Europa (2300 m), bevindt zich op het hoogste punt van de 3 Vallées in het grootste skigebied ter wereld met 600 km piste en bijna 200 skiliften.

Val Thorens is gereputeerd om de unieke kwaliteit van zijn sneeuw, die er in overvloed ligt van november tot mei, en om zijn hypermoderne skiliften en cabines. De nieuwste installaties en het grote comfort van de liften bieden snelle en veilige verbindingen met een minimum aan wachttijd.

Het woord vervelen kent men niet in Val Thorens. Binnen de gezellige en internationale sfeer staan ontspanning en amusement voorop. Er is een overdekt sportcentrum van meer dan 8000 m² groot, er worden concerten gehouden, sportieve activiteiten aangeboden (deltavliegen, sleeën, sneeuwmotors…), welnessruimtes en talloze restaurants en bars. Het moeilijkste is hier: een keuze maken!

Paragliding over the Alps at Val Thorens.

The weather is getting warmer and we’ve actually had days without clouds or rain. I was able to have cold drinks on the cafe terraces on the squares of Valence and watch the sun setting behind the castle on the cliff. However, the warm weather also means that the ski season is coming to an end, so this past Saturday me and Canadian assistant friend Lauren went to Val Thorens.

Val Thorens is at an altitude of 2,300 meters (or 7,545 feet) and is the highest ski station in Europe. This means that is has a long season, so although it was light jacket weather in Valence there was still snow on the ground at Val Thorens and cold wind in my face. It’s part of the Trois Vallées (Three Valleys), a huge ski area with 410 miles of slopes. Since we were only there for a day, I didn’t venture outside of Val Thorens and the adjoining Orelle ski areas. We actually started in Orelle, as it seemed to have the main parking lot for buses, and then took the longest télécabine in the world to the slopes. I’m so glad I’m not afraid of heights, because that was quite the long and dizzying ride up the mountain.

I took a few runs at Orelle to warm up and remember how to turn and important things like that. I feel like I have progressed a lot with snowboarding since I got to France. I can confidently go down all blue slopes and tumble in a less elegant fashion on the easier reds. There probably won’t be a day when I feel like going down a black in the Alps, but for a girl from Oklahoma I think I do pretty well. I did have a somewhat painful fall near the end when my legs were so tired that I caught an edge and landed flat on my back on an icy area. But considering I was having those every five minutes my first snowboarding trip here, I’ll call the day a success.

I had read online before our trip that about 70% of the Val Thorens skiers were foreigners, and it turned out to be accurate as I barely heard any French. It’s pretty close to the border of Italy, so I bet a lot of people come over that way. They all seemed to be in massive skiing groups. It’s not unusual to see a group of four or five people skiing together, but I literally saw a group of 15. And when I’m doing my control-freak S-turns down a steep incline with a few moguls and a group of 15 expert German skiers comes speeding down the slopes I get a little thrown off. Yet it really wasn’t that crowded and there were a couple of runs I did where I didn’t see a single other person.

One thing that’s different about skiing/snowboarding in the Alps is that the slopes are incredibly long. There might only be two or three coming off a lift, but they’ll be at least twice as long as a slope in New Mexico. And just a side note, when I told people that I usually went snowboarding in New Mexico they seemed shocked that there were any mountains and asked if I had to dodge cacti. I realize my geography of France is not perfect, but I’m always a little surprised at the perception of the United States here. In one of my classes a teacher printed off maps of the USA for the students to find Oklahoma. I have no clue where she got this map, because on it everything below Oklahoma City had been absorbed by Texas and the state was more like a frying pan than its usual saucepan shape.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do with my snowboard. It’s a great board and I’d love to keep it, but I need to think realistically about moving back to the States and the fact that I already have a board back home. If anyone reading this might be interested in buying it, it’s a Rome Blue 155 board and was only used once before I bought it. It looks like this, has Hammer bindings, is made in Austria, and would only cost you 150 euros. Anyway, that’s the end of my classified ad.

After the day of snowboarding I was exhausted and took it easy that night. I was a little sore the next day, but after some stretching I’m fine. No bruises even! I got a pear hot chocolate at the tea shop yesterday and then a coke at the pub. Today is beautiful, so I think I’m going to go to the park now and enjoy the sun.

Efter en uge med masiv “white out” i franske Val T. er vi endnu en gang tilbage på kontoret. Egentlig var det meningen af vi skulle have skudt de vildeste billeder til Damnarks størst og vildest freestyle event Frostgun, med sådan ville vejret ikke. Michael Fugmann manden bag Frostgun havde ellers steppet op i år, og fået lavet et setup på absolut international niveau, og med 70.000 kr. i præmie var det noget at gå efter for de mange riders.

This inspired challenge for skiers aged 12 to 18 years (in 2008) and who live in Europe has been developed and created by ‘The North Face’ and judges young European skiers in both freeride and freestyle.

Freeride will be judged to demonstrate the individual’s technique, control, lines and general abilities.

Freestyle will be examined on the individual’s style, creativity, landing;  difficulty and amplitude will also be rewarded.

There will be 5 qualifying events and the final in 2009 open to four categories:

• 12-13 year olds
• 14-15 year olds
• 16-18 year olds
• overall girls category

Each qualifying event will examine a maximum of 75 competitors with 60 competitors being selected for the final event in Val Thorens, France. An additional 10 competitors will be invited to Val Thorens at the discretion of the organisers. The top two skiers in the 16-18 year category at Val Thoens will be offered a sponsors contract by The North Face, Dynastar and Lange.

The dates of the qualifying events for the 2009 North Face Challenge are:

• January 31st – February 1st 2009 – Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany
• February 7th – 8th 2009 – Ruka, Finland
• February 14th – 15th 2009 – Are, Sweden
• February 28th – March 1st  2009 – Chamonix, France
• March 27th – 29th – Val Thorens, France
