El Rallye Shalymar ha dado comienzo en la Catellana de Madrid. Tras recorrer los tres primero tramos previstos para el viernes, todos ellos nocturnos, Vallejo es líder con 29.6 segundos sobre Pons. Hevia y Ojeda son tercero y cuarto, respectivamente.

A las 19:00 ha comenzado la última prueba del Nacional de Asfalto, el Rallye Shalymar. Los coches han salido de la explanada situada enfrente del estadio Santiago Bernabeu, desde donde han emprendido el camino hacia El Atazar, primer tramo de los tres previstos para el viernes.

Los hermanos Vallejo han terminado el día, líderes, con 29.66 segundos sobre Xevi Pons, 36.0 sobre Alberto Hevia y 38.5 sobre Quique Ojeda. Según ha terminado el día, Vallejo tiene la oportunidad de alzarse con el Shalymar, ya que dos de los ocho tramos previstos para el sábado se disputan en el circuito del Jarama, donde la potencia del 911 GT3 es superior a la de los vehículos de sus rivales.

Aún queda por decidir el subcampeonato entre Pons y Vallejo, que si quedaran así las cosas con Hevia entre los dos, Xevi se subiría al segundo escalón del pódium y sería subcampeón del Nacional por detrás de Vallejo.

Celly Cel — “What U Niggaz Thought”

A few nights ago, I read through the latest spat between veteran blogger Noz and his (perceived) critical nemesis Jeff Weiss with a great deal of interest, though not at all for the music in question. You see, I’m sure Pill and Freddie Gibbs are talented rappers, but the truth is I feel no desire whatsoever to explore their “catalog” by downloading one of the gazillion mixtapes they’ve released for free. That’s just not how I’ve grown up listening to music. In fact, every time I hear someone complain about how mixtapes aren’t afforded the same critical respect as albums, or suggest that rap critics spend eight hours a day keeping up with the constant flood of free internet music (seriously Noz, is that your life?), I want to smash my computer with a bat and curse the internet for irreversibly ruining rap music. You see, before purchasing music became the sole domain of collectors and altruists, the same “gritty” and “uncompromising” qualities so prized in Pill and Gibbs could be found on any number of major label releases, many of which sold incredibly well without making any mainstream concessions. It wasn’t necessary to flood the worldwide web to create a buzz; on the contrary, one could scan a lot of fucking records without looking much further than his own coast or region. Nowadays, however, that approach is extinct, and artists like Pill and Gibbs have no choice but to court national attention through the internet. Which upsets “street-minded” bloggers, who don’t want to share their artists with anyone as white as themselves (certainly not readers of The New Yorker and The Times), evokes ambivalence in the few of us who still prefer our music in concrete form, and only wins fans among people who, should an album ever be released, will surely download it for free anyway (a la most of The Passion’s commenters.) All the while, we know that if a major label does take notice (which has to be these rappers’ end goal) it’ll erase any of the individuality that made them appealing in the first place, since the old stick-with-the-formula approach (think Too $hort and E-40 on Jive) is just no longer commercially viable.

So what’s an artist to do? Fuck if I know. The game is fucked up, in a real way. But let’s remember a time when it wasn’t. A time when an unapolagetically regional rapper—from Vallejo of all places—was able to move well over 400K copies of his sophomore album, all while remaining virtually unknown outside the Bay Area (and, apparently, Seattle.) No, I’m not talking about E-40, or even Mac Dre. In those fruitful days, even a tiny city like Vallejo could boast multiple major-label emcees, of which Celly Cel, signed to 40’s Sick Wid It/Jive imprint, was merely one.

Celly Cel — “Remember Where You Came From”

Stylistically indebted to his mentor, Celly Cel nonetheless lacked much of E-40’s humor and personality, but on Killa Kali he benefits from some of the best straight-up mobb production of any Bay Area release I’ve heard. While Mike Mosley and Sam Bostic (of “Sprinkle Me” fame) are conspicuously absent, and Studio Ton contributes only one track, producer Ken Franklin follows their blueprint to great effect on the majority of the album’s tracks, while Tone Capone (The Luniz’ “I Got Five On It”) and Kevin Gardner and Redwine (40’s “Smoke ‘N Drank’”) take care of the rest. The result is an aural snapshot of Bay Area rap circa 1996, blessed with a major label budget but free from the creative pressures that cripple artists on majors today. With the exceptions of fellow Bay Area rappers E-40 and B-Legit on “4 Tha Scrilla” and Spice 1 on “Redrum,” Killa Kali contains no features, while its single, the creeping “It’s Goin’ Down” would’ve been lucky to garner a single spin on New York radio. And yet Killa Kali, in all its mobbed-out, Bay Area glory, damn near went gold, a feat increasingly rare for any artist in this era of Nahright and Rapidshare links. So while I’m grateful to the internet for allowing me to share my opinions with the world, I also recognize the damage it’s done to the genre I love so much. Which is perhaps why I’d rather dig out a fully-realized, uncompromising album from 1996 than listen to whichever online mixtape is hot at the moment, or, even worse, the latest watered down mush to come out on a major label. The game done changed, I know, but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna change with it.

En el 57 Rally Costa Brava-Lloret de Mar, penúltima prueba puntuable para el Nacional de Asfalto, se ha decidido el Campeonato de España. Los hermanos Vallejo (Porsche) han logrado un cuarto puesto que les ha dado los puntos matemáticos para alzarse con el título. Mikkelssen ha arrebatado el primer puesto a Hevia en el penúltimo tramo.

El viernes daba comienzo el rallye más antiguo de España y penúltima prueba del Nacional de Asfalto, el Costa Brava. A él llegaban tres pilotos con opciones de llevarse el título de campeón de España, Sergio Vallejo (Porsche), Xevi Pons (Mitsubishi) y Miguel Fuster (Porsche). Al final, la suerte y el trabajo de los hermanos Vallejo ha dado resultado y han logrado los puntos suficientes en la general como para proclamarse campeones matemáticos.

Alberto Hevia y su copiloto Alberto Iglesias, a los mandos del Škoda Fabia Super 2000 dominaron el rallye desde sus inicios, donde en los 10,12 Km. del tramo de Grions sacaban 5,8 segundos a Xevi Pons, segundo. La primera jornada acabó con Hevia en cabeza, a 12,2 segundos de Pons y 16,3 segundos de Vallejo.

En la segunda jornada del rallye, Hevia mantenía su posición, pero Pons y Vallejo sucumbían a la pegada de  Andreas Mikkelssen (Fabia S2000). El noruego se ponía segundo a 9,8 segundos de Hevia. Pero a pesar de la presión, el asturiano aumentaba la distancia, logrando 10,4 segundos de diferencia.

Pero en la cuarta y última sección, hubo un protagonista que pocos contaban con él, la lluvia. La elección de neumáticos fue clave. Alberto Hevia optó por los de “agua”, mientras todos sus rivales elegían los de “seco”. Pero, a pesar de la buena elección de las gomas y debido a unos problemas, el asturiano dejaba, finalmente, la primera plaza a Mikkelssen. “La lluvia nos ha complicado el final del rallye, pero irnos para casa con un doblete de Škoda y una primera posición entre los pilotos del Campeonato de España es un excelente resultado para nosotros, para Škoda España y para todos nuestros patrocinadores” ha manifestado Hevia.

Tercero ha sido finalmente Xevi Pons y cuarto Vallejo, conservador en los últimos kilómetros. La lucha por el subcampeonato entre Pons, Miguel Fuster y Enrique García-Ojeda deberá decidirse en la última carrera, el Shalymar.

Since the blog is can be found at “vallejoleft” I thought it would be a good idea to make a post on the politics of Vallejo.  I should make a disclaimer that the address “vallejoleft” doesn’t imply that I represent the views of any movement, ideology or organization or anyone other than myself.  I am simply a progressive who lives in Vallejo.

For school board there seemed to be many qualified candidates, but I thought the most qualified was Adrienne Waterman .  Ruscal J. Cayangyang also seemed very sharp and he has the advantage of being a student of Vallejo schools recently.  My third choice is a tossup between two incumbents, Hazel A. Wilson and Cris Oggee Villanueva.  I’m leaning toward Wilson now because I haven’t seem very much about Villanueva.

On the council side, deciding was easier.  Johnathan Logan, Jr. is an extremely capable candidate who wants to start his political career in Vallejo.  I am also voting for Marie “Punkie” Nelson by process of elimination because the rest of the serious candidates seem to have antagonistic relationships with organized labor which I don’t think are constructive.  Two of them voted for bankruptcy.

Amidst the tension between those who eat granola to metaphysical rap and those who dream about dollars and cents while bumping monetary-themed rap in their whips, I think everyone can agree on E-40. There’s no denying that the guy’s esoteric slang is in a league of its own–not necessarily saying it’s greater but it’s definitely on some other ish. He’s a rapper’s rapper and he still has dead presidents on his mind.
