That amazing piece started the inspiration of the Mego Cave, now a combination office, reading nook, craft space, and formal living room. Phew! What a multi-functional space, just how I like ‘em. So even though the desk was fabulous, I knew from the beginning that I just wasn’t gelling with the yellow color. I worked so hard to get rid of the yellow atmosphere that seemed to permeate every room in our house (check out our kitchen before and after and how the Mego Cave was transformed by a coat of paint, just to show a few examples). After the colors had started coming together in the Mego Cave, I thought that a nice grey would be a good neutral in a room with so many patterns starting to emerge (hello new rug and Roman shades made from mini-blinds, along with the crazy fabric artwork). I had a few samples of grey paint, so I thought that was a good place to start.

After painting on the three samples, I decided that I liked the darker shade the best. After just painting the bookcase white, I wanted to bring in some contrast. The winning paint color was Valspar’s Autumn Fog in a satin finish. You know what else I decided to give a go? Valspar’s new paint crystals, a glittery add-in for paint. You know I can’t say no to glitter.

Although, I am a glitter girl to the core, I do try to censor myself so our house doesn’t look like tween’s bedroom that exploded in glitter. So I did a little test before painting the entire desk. I poured a little bit of the glimmer powder into a little bit of paint and mixed up a test batch. (The below picture is before I thoroughly mixed the paint crystals into the paint.)

It was a very subtle glimmer in my test, so I decided to go for it. The package has instructions on how much to add for gallons and quarts, but I really just eye balled it since I didn’t use the whole quart of paint. Here she is in her full glory. It’s a subtle transformation with a subtle sheen, but I think it was the right color choice.

Here is a close-up of the paint color. This is the best picture I have to try to show off the paint crystals, but it is so subtle that it is hard to capture in a picture. Just imagine tiny, tiny, tiny, flecks of glitter in your paint. Just enough to catch the light and give it a little sparkle, but not enough to look like a glitter desk.

Now, a painting project post is never complete without a before and after.

There is another paint project for the Mego Cave! The room is really starting to feel cohesive now. I love that this brought the desk into the color scheme with a nice, neutral grey, but I was able to put a little Megan touch using the paint crystals! An office isn’t complete for me (now) until it has a glittery desk!

This is a very easy and inexpensive way to make over any room! (however it is best for smaller rooms)

Taking inspiration from the newest influences in nature, colour and technology, Valspar offers three palettes with a range of hues. Electro Noir (the bold technology category) includes cool blues and greys, but throws in a lively pumpkin and bright lime to spice things up. Simple Delights, not surprisingly, samples the softer pastels, while Gathered Stories is a selection of mostly earth tones “reminiscent of days gone by,” according to a release.

In a similar vein, CIL went for joyous and uplifting colours as inspiration, saying the hottest hues will be vibrant brights, dusty pastels and fluro-infused neutrals. “These are colours that can be easily incorporated into any room in the home,” spokeswoman Alison Goldman says in a release.

A few posts ago, I talked about wanting to make our new house more of a home by painting the accent walls in the house.  After several phone calls and emails to the property management company (0ver the course of a few weeks), we finally permission to paint!

A few Lowes trips later, J and I decided on a color for the kitchen and I am so happy with it!  I have spent the past two days painting the kitchen and wooohoo it looks fantastic!

It’s called Fisherman’s Wharf  by Allen & RothValspar and it has the paint and primer in one, which made the dark, ugly chocolate brown we were trying to get rid of, much easier to cover!

So for you first time painters, or those of you who don’t want it to be a huge chore, it was so simplistic so don’t be discouraged! If I can do it, you can too!

In the architectural coatings industry it takes certain pigments to get bright and exotic colors such as reds, oranges and yellows. The most commonly known pigments to achieve these colors are the minerals lead and cadmium.

There are many minerals which are considered nutrients and are vital to proper functioning of the body. Equally, there are a number of minerals that are toxic to the human body and interfere with its functioning and undermine health. The group of most concern are knows as heavy metals and include lead and cadmium.

Over the years, environmental and health concerns have spurred increasingly stringent regulatory requirements for the use and disposal of both lead and cadmium pigments.  As a result, environmentally conscious manufacturers and applicators have refrained from using these pigments in their coating systems.

The raw materials used in the paint manufacturing process include pigments, solvents, and resins. The chemical composition of paint varies depending on the desired paint properties. Pigments provide the coating with color, opacity, and a degree of durability.

Valspar, and other paint manufacturers, now formulate all paint coatings with environmentally friendly organic pigments replacing lead and cadmium.  These new pigments were derived from the automotive industry that has been using them successfully for years.  The exterior performance is equal to that of the old cadmium-based pigment product.  You will see no performance loss due to this new formulation.

More than ninety percent of the colors that were previously formulated with cadmium-based pigments can be made to match the same color using the less harmful pigments.  The color difference in the remaining ten percent will generally be undetectable by the human eye –the exception may be with the bright red, yellow, and oranges.

Linetec works hard both internally and with the manufacturers to create the closest match possible without the use of lead or cadmium. In some cases, however, the matches will not have the same color characteristics as when lead or cadmium is used.

Random Fact about my house: It now has a yellow front door!

If you will remember from our before pictures, or more recently our yard clean up, the house had a very bland exterior.  Here’s a refresher:

Literally, the ENTIRE HOUSE was gray… grey: doors, window trim, siding, roof, garage door. E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G.

One day, I grabbed a couple of paint swatches from Lowe’s to see what I could do about breaking up this Eyore-ish color pallate.  I had yellow in my head from the get go, because yellow goes well with grey, so I grabbed a few different shades of yellow as well as a lime green, just to mix it up.

It didn’t take me long to narrow it down to these two.

I left these two paint chips up on the door for a few days to see it in a few different kinds of light, but I ended up going with the brighter one (Yellow Chimes by Valspar).  I got a quart of Valspar DURAMAX paint-and-primer-in-one.

4 coats of paint later…

It turned out so well!  I’m really happy with the color and glossy finish.  And the house looks so much happier from the road!

I was actually amazed at the difference just painting the front door made.  I think that with the tiniest bit of work, this house could be so cute! I made a few “fantasy improvements” in photoshop to show you what I mean.  It’s a little rough, but it was the best I could whip up in a short time…

It’s a rough outline, but it gets the point across.  I would love to:

Rip up the astroturf that is glued to the front walkway.  Yes, astroturf… You don’t believe me?  Look at the first picture in this post: there it is, in all it’s old, soggy glory.  And sand off glue that is keeping it on stuck to the concrete.

Tear out that porch rail thing… but since it isn’t my house, I will have to settle for painting it white to cover the flaking black rust.

Since I can’t tear out the rail, I would also love to plant morning glory in a bed in front of the rail so they could climb up it.  Who knows it might become a charming favorite!

Paint the garage door white to cover up the peeling, fading paint and to break up the grey-ness of the house even more.

Lay rock/brick/concrete block SOMETHING to make the walk from the end of the concrete (at the end of the rail) to the driveway smooth and level.  Sunday heels + rocky/muddy pathway = I almost break my neck every Sunday.

These are all things that I can, and hopefully will, do fairly cheaply and easily since it is a rental (I have landlord permission to paint/improve).  If it WAS my house, I would probably add some kind of front porch, but as it stands now, even with just the yellow door update, the place looks vastly happier!

What have you been doing in the way of home improvements?  We had so many wonderfully warm days that I was able to get this done a little at a time (letting the paint cure and then some because I was busy).  The rest of my outdoor improvements may have to wait until spring, but at least I can spend the next few dreary months coming home to my cheery door every day!

So, I painted the ceiling white.  Obviously, this color all around would be cavelike..  I think this sample online is more intense than the actual wall color.  But, The Bearded One is being very quiet about the color.  He either hasn’t noticed or he hates it.

Tomorrow, I will mount the new medicine cabinet and install the new light.  He may be silent because he only has a worklight to function in his bathroom and no mirror.  We will see.

I was going for a teal that was more to the blue instead of the green. I ended up with Jamaican Dream from Olympic, but I had it color matched to Valspar Signature. I like the Valspar brand. The Signature line holds high pigment colors well, and they dry true to color.

Next time I will share my Michaels find…you won’t believe it!

They were clearly old, and needed a little lovin’. I found the perfect spot for them on our bedroom night stands. We started out with some really cheap, small lamps around the house at first, and I’ve slowly replaced them as I’ve found good deals. Pretty lighting does not come cheap! I knew these bulkier lamps would be a better fit flanking each side of the bed. They also bring a little feminine, and vintage detail to our brown and blue, straight lined bedroom.

The wood parts of the lamps had definitely seen better days, and wasn’t the right color for our bedroom. I decided to spray paint the wooden parts gold. I’m all about gold and metallics these days. I lightly sanded each part and then covered the glass in plastic. First, I taped off the edges to make sure there wouldn’t be any bleed-through, then I taped plastic grocery bags around the glass and to the tape already there. I usually  like to use the Frog painters tape, but I couldn’t find mine so I just used masking tape. I’m totally not a patient DIYer. Go with the painters tape. This is one of those “do as I say, not as I do” moments.

I sprayed a few light coats of a metallic gold by Valspar. I’m not super in love with their cans because I can’t use my gripper attachment , but it wasn’t too bad since it was such a small project.

Once I was done spraying them, and they had time to cure, I pulled off the plastic and tape and scrubbed down the glass. I waited to clean the years of dust off of the glass until after they were painted. I figured if there happened to be any paint bleed through (and there wasn’t! yay!), I’d only have to do one scrubbing. I just used a magic eraser and a little water and they looked brand new!

I’m in love with them! They are the perfect addition to our bedroom. The gold looks great with my metallic sunburst mirror above the bed.

The Naptime Decorator said it best in her Favorite Thanksgiving Tradition post, and her crafty ideas inspired this month’s Weekend DIY Project Giveaway! A few holiday items for your mantel!

I LOVED her idea of a thanksgiving branch and decided to recreate it for one lucky winner! So, I headed to my favorite craft store - Goodwill! I found this pretty little pitcher for only $5.95 (originally priced at $79.89). Well… if you don’t already know, Goodwill marks down their wares 50% after they are on the shelf for a certain amount of time. I always look for the number of the week, and was lucky enough that this pitcher was the number, so $2.98 it was! Can’t beat that! I liked the color, but there was a scratch on the handle, so a make-over was in its future.

Before I broke out the spray paint, I grabbed a few items from my Goodwill redo stash:

The frame I purchased from Goodwill a few months ago (at 50% off of course!) and you may recognize the candle sticks from one of our Halloween posts! They have both been dying for a makeover, so I helped ‘em out a bit.

Motley crew beforehand… and after a little love and care:

I am really happy how these turned out (and secretly wishing I could keep them for myself!). The pitcher and candle sticks required two coats of spray paint (I used Valspar Satin White Paint+Primer), but after my first coat of paint on the frame, I really liked it. I was considering distressing the edges after I painted, but the one coat gave it the look naturally. I first coated the frame glass with the primer/paint and then gave it 3 coats of chalk board spray paint. Then I cut up some scrapbooking paper, glued on a blank piece of cardstock and tied on a ribbon for you to write down things you are thankful for!
