PARIS

CARMEN y MARTINA estaban ahora en PARIS en una visita especial a STUART LOCKE, y conocieron a su esposa MARIANA y su pequeña hija LYNN, una familia de verdad hermosa, pero los sueños de CARMEN con AMALIA seguían vigentes y ahora parecían reales, una flor amaneció en la almohada. En la salida de compras que hicieron adquirieron libros de ALQUIMIA y CIENCIAS OCULTAS, pero fue un encuentro lo que las dejó en shock, GIOVANNI ROSSI frente a ellas con ANNA DARVULIA, su prometida, y decía que no sabía de REGINA desde hace dos años. Al regresar a la casa le narraron toda la historia a STUART y a MARIANA quedando en terror cuando él dijo que sabía de una mujer llamada ERZSÉBETH STROSSNER…

ANNA tenía un olor fétido… las chicas planearon algo, una carta escrita por CARMEN donde reiteraba su amor por GIOVANNI, el hombre más hermoso y como aún lo amaba, era un gran engaño y el chico cayó y decía que quería de verdad a CARMEN, pues lo dijo a MARTINA cuando lo visitó. GIOVANNI llegó a la casa de los LUCKE, y se da una fuente de la escritora de esta novela, ANN RADCLIFE la creadora de LOS MISTERIOS DE UDOLFO y que era la lectura de la pequeña LYNN.

LYNN decía que él era el príncipe sapo y el gran descubrimiento, él nunca le escribió a CARMEN ni a REGINA, alguien lo había hecho, pero LYNN dijo ver una mujer rubia en el patio en el jardín y con la descripción captaron que era ANNA, CARMEN no dejó que GIOVANNI saliera… el momento lo cerró cuando GIOVANNI dijo que no podía ser ANNA, que ella estaba cenando en la casa de ERZSÉBETH STROSSNER.

In an attempt to project an image of “old curmudgeon,” I thought about starting this article with the phrase “I don’t really understand all the fuss about this Twilight movie thing…” but realized that I actually do understand all the fuss. Sure, the trailers for the movie look like ads for Abercrombie & Fitch, with the obligatory topless young kouroi flaunting their six-pack abs and genetically enhanced dentition, but in our glossy celebrity-focused culture, this is par for the course.

The majority of Twilight fans are either teenage girls or moms reliving their teenage years, and ogling attractive young men in various stages of undress is hardly abnormal. It’s no different from my watching the spectacularly bad Bandidas (2006) solely because it has Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz, or sitting through the vapidly banal Barb Wire (1986) just to marvel at the gravity-defying qualities of Pamela Anderson Lee’s frontage.

The other element that makes the New Moon movie so appealing is the presence of male vampires. Without going into an extended psychoanalytical thesis, all you need to know is that as far as women are concerned, vampires are HOT. And by “hot,” I mean sexually charged and erotic. Although I’m acutely aware that feminists may hate me for saying this, a woman can get the chills thinking of being dominated by some dark, handsome vampire whose intentions are less than honorable and who are quite happy to use their sexual charisma (something vampires appear to have in spades) to take their wicked pleasures.

Anyone who actually does want to read a thesis on sexuality and vampires should pop out and buy a copy of the deliciously decadent romp by Camille Paglia called Sexual Persona. Ms. Paglia takes on the whole of western art and uses a psycho-sexual knife to pare it down to its roots – which turns out to be shockingly erotic and so mired in sex that a walk through the masterpieces in the National Gallery of Art in Washington turns out to be no different from an afternoon in a back-street porno theater with a bucket of buttery popcorn. Admittedly she spend more time talking about the notion of the female vampire or “femme fatale,” but to connection between vampirism and sexuality is explicit.

So anyone claiming they “don’t understand what all the fuss is about” is either woefully unable to understand women or lying just so they can seem to be intellectually aloof. And anyone pretending that they’re watching the movie for Oscar-winning performances by giants in the field of acting is simply suffering from the American disease called Puritanism. As a friend of mine told me many years ago, “America was founded by Puritans – and it still shows!” I’m with H.L. Mencken when he says that Puritanism is “the haunting fear that someone, somewhere is having a good time.”

As to understanding the word itself, vampire - or vampyr - is of Slavic origin. It exists in Czech, Polish, Russian, and Serb, as well as vapir and vepir in Bulgarian and vepyr in Ruthenian. Other variations include vopyr, opyr, upir, upyr and upior. The OED defines one as follows:

A preternatural being of a malignant nature (in the original and usual form of the belief, a reanimated corpse), supposed to seek nourishment, or do harm, by sucking the blood of sleeping persons; a man or woman abnormally endowed with such habits. (OED, Vol.XIX, p.422)

In 1796, the word is used in something called the Harleian Miscellany. The full – and well-worth repeating – title is Harleian Miscellany: A collection of scarce, curious, and entertaining pamphlets and tracts, as well in manuscript as in print, found in the late (Edmund Harley, second) Earl of Oxford’s library. Sounds like a forerunner of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. In the relevant passage, the writer says, “These Vampyres are supposed to be the Bodies of Deceased Persons, animated by evil Spirits, which come out of the Graves, in the Night-time, suck the Blood of many of the Living, and thereby destroy them.”

By 1813, the vampire had become a thing literary comment, with Lord Byron including the following sentence in his poem, The Giaour; “The freshness of the face, the wetness of the lips with blood, are the never-failing signs of a Vampire.” Interestingly, Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote the poem Christabel in 1797 (with the second part in 1800 and the third part never appearing), which is clearly about a female vampire but without the word actually being used.

The publishing of Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1897 marked the birth of the “modern” vampire, who is male, urbane, and a Romantic figure. Rather than being an ugly, evil, tortured spirit, the modern vampire is more along the lines of being “Mad, bad, and dangerous to know.” By the end of the 20th century, thanks to the writing of such authors as Anne Rice and the Hollywood movie machine, vampires had become romantically heroic. There’s even a whole sub-culture (or sub-cultures) of people who are convinced that (a) vampires are real and (b) they are vampires!. Cruise and Pitt: Vampires

By extending the metaphor of sucking blood, the word vampire has also come to be used to describe “A person of a malignant and loathsome character, esp. one who preys ruthlessly upon others; a vile or cruel extractor or extortioner.” (ibid. 422)

The word can also undergo inflections: vampiric and vampirish are used to described someone as having the nature of a vampire; vampiredom means the state of being a vampire; and vampirism is the collective facts or ideas associated with the world of vampires.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a shortened form of the word, vamp, was used to describe, “A woman who intentionally attracts and exploits men; an adventuress; a Jezebel; freq. as a stock character in plays and films.” (OED, Vol. XIX, p.421). Note that this is NOT the same as the word vamp used to describe the part of the shoe or hose (stocking/sock) that covers the front of the foot. That word derives from the Old French avanpie, which in turn comes from avan(t)=before + pié=foot. It’s a great example of where two words appear to come from the same root but, in fact, don’t. This is sometimes referred to as a false cognate.

I won’t be going to see New Moon. There are only so many hours left in my life and spending two of them watching fantasy teenage angst seems a little bit of a waste. Now, where’s my Tomb Raider DVD…?

Hinner inte blogga om filmen ikväll, måste sova om jag ska orka upp på besättningsbesök imorgon. Men ni kan få ett par bilder av mitt vampyrego.

Vad är det som gör att vissa filmer/böcker fastnar?

En del skulle kalla böckerna som hör till New Moon – Twilight-sagan – för kiosklitteratur. Det är lite spekulativt, att ge ut flera böcker i samma tema och genre. Ja, vi har ju en drös såna i Sverige förresten, alla deckare.

Varför funkar det?

För att det handlar om drömmar och fantasier. Det slår på en sträng som ger en touch av overklig verklighet. För figurerna bär dina tankar, känslor, yttryck men finns i en miljö som du inte är. Och det är ingenting nytt. Titta tex. Dickens eller Poe, de var mästare på det här och Christie med sina mordgåtor.

Jag tycker Star Wars är ett annat bra ex på det här. I miljöer som är osannolika finns ändå mina känslor. OM det så är rädsla, oro, medkänsla – allt det är MINA känslor som lockas fram. New Moon är bara det senaste ex. på det.

Det er vampyrfeber i Harstad, leser jeg på ht.no. Filmen “New Moon” har premiere natt til fredag 19. november kl. 00.02.

Hollywood elsker vampyrer, og det gjør folk flest også, men hvorfor lar vi oss tenne sånn av latterlige filmer om blodsugende eventyrvesen?  Jeg må si det så pass sterkt: På listen over de 500 dårligste filmene jeg har sett, tilhører Francis Ford Coppolas “Dracula” fra 1992 det absolutte bunnsjiktet (i hard kamp med “Norske Byggeklosser” fra 1971).

Vampyrene skal være levende døde som står opp om natten for å drikke blod av de levende, og de skal også kunne besette menneskene slik at vi også blir vampyrer. Liksom! Skal man lage film om sånt, er det vel like før noen også lager filmer om unger på en trolldomsskole.

Men åpenbart er det mange som lar seg forføre av vampyrene. NRK3 har nå stor suksess med “True Blood”,  som “tar oss med til småbyen Bon Temps i Louisiana hvor mennesker og vampyrer lever i sameksistens takket være oppfinnelsen av et syntetisk blod”. Jeg har overhodet ikke lyst til å drive reklame for serien, men i alle fall: Den vises for eksempel torsdag 19. november kl. 22.30 og fredag 20. november kl. 22.10.

Og nei: Jeg er overhodet ikke redd for vampyrer. Man spiser da hvitløk.

Yesterday, I bought a new mirror for my basement home. The old one on the wall was all cracked and some of the pieces were falling off. So I found a cheap one and lugged it back on the subway, during which trip I ran into my English friend, Geezer. He’s not a vampyr (yes, we do like to have regular friends, intermingling is allowed) but he knows that I am.

He knows well of my dislike for vampyr lore and all its myths and stereotypes. So I was kinda surprised at his ignorance when he said: “but what does one of your lot need with a mirror, then? You got yerself a bird now or somefink?”

His ignorance was two-fold. Firstly, a girlfriend, ha! Funny guy, rub salt in the wound why don’t you?

Secondly, yes, I can see my reflection in a mirror. What – do you really believe that my body matter somehow allows light to pass right through unobstructed, so I have no reflection? Once again – where did you people get taught science???

And to me, this is one of the big consistencies of modern vampyr portrayal. How do all those vampyrs like Bill and Edward keep their hair looking so slick and their outfits so well coordinated if they can’t use a mirror in the morning?

Didn’t think about that did you? Hmmm.

MURCIÉLAGOS

La NAVIDAD había llegado y representaba el dolor y el luto, y ahora MARTHINA y CARMEN estaban ante el baúl de SUSANA, los objetos allí encontrados eran de análisis detenido, un puñal de piedra afilada y una botella con una sustancia pulverizada, pero además estaba un LIBRO NEGRO… las chicas vigilaban en las noches de manera turnada, no podían creer lo que había sentido AMALIA al ser ultrajada por ese feo hombre. La gran duda seguía presente en ellas, a qué había venido SUSANA al SAINT-MARIE? Ellas quemaron esa noche todas las cosas de la chica vampira, y la nieve borró toda sospecha de lo que habían hecho…

La señorita RICCI invitó a la fiesta de REYES del 6 de enero al padre ANASTASIO… cuando las chicas lo visitaron escucharon algo que las asustó mucho, la verdadera identidad de SUSANA era ERZSÉBET, una mujer que había pertenecido a la nobleza y había muerto en una celda y CSEJTHE era el nombre del hombre…

Era un acertijo y cuando el cura vio la BIBLIA NEGRA, dedicada a LUCIFER, entre los tres prendieron fuego al cofre y salió un humo negro y con él llegó la sombra, una mancha negra, era un gran grupo de murciélagos, ellos entraron en la iglesia y las criaturas no lo pudieron hacer… la idea de MARTHINA fue prender fuego en la chimenea y el humo los alejó… ERSÉBET bebía sangre humana en vida y se bañaba en ella…

El 6 de enero tuvo lugar el encuentro con el padre ANASTASIO… pero el 5 de marzo de 1880 MARTHINA recibió la visita de STUART LUCKE, el abogado le dijo que una chica había ido a reclamar una propiedad… días después MARIE y JUANITO se casaron y MARTHINA donó un dinero para el colegio dejando feliz a la señorita RICCI, pero los días negros estaban por llegar…

Klockan 9 i morse var jag till MVC på en undersökning, för att kolla så att allt stod rätt till med tanke på blödningarna. Och allt såg bra ut som tur var. Sen åkte vi till björkås och fikade och tog en liten titt på lilla Gizmo, han är så himla söt! I dag var han helgalen, han skuttade runt och skulle bita i allting.

Jag känner mig trött samtidigt som jag är sugen på att ta en promenad, man kanske piggnar till lite då.

I går kväll läste jag ut En gnista från solen av Mark Canter, det var en väldigt bra bok så snart måste jag släpa mig in till min fullproppade bokhylla och leta på någon ny bok att sluka. Det är så många böcker som jag vill ha, har önskat mig 12 stycken i julklapp, varav 6 stycken handlar om vampyrer.

Jag ska försöka lura hit mormor på något vis med ett paket köttbullar, jag såg att hon hade köpt det på MM i dag. Jag är så sugen på köttbullar och gräddsås.

Hoppas att det går någon bra film ikväll, för idol har jag inte följt nå vidare så det är ju ingen mening nu känns det som, och förresten så känner jag mig inte alls lika intresserad av idol nu som jag var för några år sedan.

I probably wouldn’t ever see Carl Dreyer’s Vampyr if it wasn’t for The 1001 Movies You Must See that I recently joined. This sucker was hard to find, but I managed to find the Criterion Edition of this classic vampire tale. I made the same mistake again by watching a semi-silent movie at night. I dozed.

Allan Gray (Julian West) religiously studies of the occult, devil worshiping and vampires lore. He becomes so obsessed that he could not distinguish between real and the supernatural. One night, he wanders into a creepy chateau down by a river in a town called Coutermpierre.

When he gets settled in, he hears what appears to be an incantation from somewhere in the inn. He investigates. Allan doesn’t see anyone and returns to his room. In the midst of sleep,  the lord of the manor (Maurice Schutz) bursts into his room and babbles to Allan about leaving the place before the house takes him over. He leaves a mysterious package on desk to be opened after his death. After the lord leaves,  Allan fears that someone– not himself–  is in trouble.

During his stay at the chateau, he sees shadows dancing on the walls, but nobody is there. He meets more of the inhabitants like the scythe-wielding man that carries a bell. Allan explores more of the chateau and the strange happenings around the place. The lord’s daughters, Gisèlle (Rena Handel) and Léone (Sybille Schmitz) have been suffering for what appears to be anemia.

The lord of the house is shot by one of the shadows and Allan is asked to stay away from the family with a servant to get the village doctor (Jan Heironimko). After the lord’s death, Allan opens the package to find a book, “The Strange History of Vampires” by Paul Bonnard. It chronicles the history of vampire lore. He reads the passages and suspects that there is a vampire amongst them.

This movie was made in1932. I want to know how they got the skulls or the shadows to move independently. This is a fascinating movie that I thought was a silent film. It has probably ten minutes of actual dialogue in the movie. Most of the time is Allan exploring the chateau.

The one complaint I have to the movie is the camerawork. It felt jerky. The way that the camera follows the characters in and out of rooms felt jerky and sped up the suspense to be effective.

Judgment: I would recommned this for the people who don’t want to be the blood and gore of other vampire movies.

So in honor of this being Lesson Ten and all, I thought I would cover the “Ten Commandments” of being a vampyr. Now don’t get concerned – there is no vampyr version of the bible. But we are not morally bereft, and have a few different codes we live by on top of the standard ten that ol’ Moses chiseled in. So here’s my version as I see it for vamps:

Number 1: Thou shalt spell vampyr correctly.

Number 2: Thou shalt not fulfill dumbass vampyr stereotypes – such as wearing capes and having pet bats.

Number 3: Though shalt not bite another dude unless faced with death. That’s just weird. Chicks biting chicks is fine, of course.

Number 4: Though shalt not use the name Lestadt in public, just to impress or confuse people. Thou didn’t know him. He was fictional.

Number 5: Thou shalt not look lustfully upon the open wound of a stranger. No matter how bloody.

Number 6: Thou shalt never pass off pig blood as human blood to save a couple of bucks when entertaining others. Cheapness is very unbecoming.

Number 7: Thou shalt never make a lawyer or an IRS agent into a vampyr. We get a bad enough rap as it is.

Number 8: Thou shalt honor the Red Cross Blood Bank and the great work that it does, and never steal from them.

Number 9: Thou shalt always answer honestly when asked where one is from. Saying “Transylvania” is soooo 1878.

Number 10: Thou shalt always wear SPF 30+. Even inside. SPF 60 if thou hath red hair.

Even if you are not a vampyr, I hope these provide plenty of food for thought.

DIARIO DE AMALIA DE PIÑÉREZ

31 DE OCTUBRE (1879) AMALIA tenía baja autoestima, se veía fea y sufría al ver a GIOVANNI amando a REGINA, ella era flaca, desgarbada y eso lo aprovechó SUSANA…

2 DE NOVIEMBRE- AMALIA visitaba a SUSANA pues estaba enferma y no le provocaba alimentarse, en la frente tenía una venda y acusaba a MARTINA y a CARMEN, le ofreció de una botella y le prometió que se vería deseable… le cortó la mano y luego lo hizo ella e intercambiaron beber su sangre. Mas tarde la obligó a estar con un hombre asqueroso y cuando despertó al día siguiente le dolía el cuerpo y el alma y estaba desnuda.

3 DE NOVIEMBRE- AMALIA ya era una mujer, SUSANA la besaba en los labios y le seguía dando líquido del frasco, y cuando la chica se miró al espejo se vio parecida a SUSANA, tenía por fin una verdadera amiga

4 DE NOVIEMBRE- En cada sueño real se veía desnuda al lado de chicas, y cuando supo que SUSANA había muerto la visitó en el ataúd y fue mordida en el cuello por ella.
26 DE NOVIEMBRE- Tenía sed de samgre, iba a morder a CARMEN pero el crucifijo de esta en el cuello no la dejó hacerlo…

Al terminar la lectura del diario, MARTINA y CARMEN se prometieron cazar al VAPYR como fuera…

Igår sminkade jag min andra modell till Angelika Sliwinskis andra fotoshoot, som jag kommer att publicera här nästa vecka när jag fått bilderna.
Denna sessionen jag lägger ut nu ägde rum, den 31 oktober “Halloween”, i en park i Malmö. Temat skulle vara lite vampyr. Inte en självklar vampyr men så att man undrar som betraktare; Är hon vampyr eller inte?
Det var mitt första frilansjobb som jag fått efter att jag blivit diplomerad makeup artist. Jag träffade Angelika, fotografen, på en konsert någon dag efter att jag blivit diplomerad… Så det är på den vägen. Jag var på rätt plats vid rätt tillfälle med rätt makeup på
Det var/är himla roligt att jobba med Angelika! Hon är en väldigt begåvad underklädesfotograf som jobbar mycket med att få fram en sensuell känsla i hennes bilder.
Modellen, Alex, sminkade jag i underklädesbutiken La Leia i Malmö – underkläderna hon har på sig är även från den butiken. Basen jag använde på henne var något ljusare än hennes egna hudton, för att få fram den “äkta” vampyr-looken. Men ändå inte så ljus att det såg konstigt ut med tonen på halsen. Jag använde mig utav svart, brun och rödvioletta skuggor som jag tonade in i varandra. Jag använde en grå/violett skugga som shading – ville akta mig från för röda, rosa, bruna och beiga färger. Tror inte en vampyr passar så bra i solpuder, eller vad säger du?
Läpparna fyllde jag i med en svart penna som jag senare tonade ut med en rött stift – blev en väldigt snygg övergång mellan det svarta och det röda! Som en finish touch applicerade jag ett rött glans i klumpar på ovansidan av underläppen – lite blod-look, samtidigt som det blir lite tredimensionellt.
Alex var så duktig och levde sig verkligen in i sin roll och lyckades även fälla riktiga tårar på vissa foton.

Bilderna med rottweilern var lite kul… Det var en dam som kom fram och tyckte att sessionen såg så intressant ut och frågade om vi hade någon användning utav hennes hund – bara så där. Kul tycker jag Bilderna blev jättebra och jag börjar få ihop ett litet portfolio nu

Under dagen har vi arrangörer gått igenom våra gamla programpunktsidéer och spånat på vad vi skulle vilja se på programmet under Prolog | 2010. Som vanligt siktar vi på en god blandning från olika lajvstilar, smaker och genrer.

Några nya ämnen som vi saknat tidigare är till exempel queer, orch, steampunk och vampyr.

23-åringen fra Oslo var i Grimstad denne helgen i anledning bursdagen til en kamerat. Det festlige laget ble raskt snudd til et mareritt da han ble angrepet på et utested i den idylliske sørlandsbyen lørdag kveld. Bursdagsfesten endte på utestedet Café Galleri i Grimstad, som i anledning Halloween hadde utkledningsfest. En drøy time etter midnatt gikk Ruud i baren for å kjøpe en øl, og ante fred og ingen fare da en mann utkledd som vampyr aggressivt nærmet seg 23-åringen. Det var da han uten forvarsel ble angrepet Melder VG-Nett 

Det er helt klart mye villdyr ute i norsk natur og fauna for tiden. Ulver angriper hunder og dreper de. Kongeørner angriper hunder selv om eieren står like ved. Og nå er det neimen ikke trygt for vampyrer på sørlandet engang. Enda det burde være mer enn nok av prester og slikt til å drive demonutdrivelser der.

Greit nok, det var Halloween lørdag, men det er ingen unnskyldning for å drikke seg så sanseløs at man faktisk tror man er den vampyren som man bærer drakta til. Siden det i tillegg har skjedd på et utested må man gå utifra at det dreier som et voksent menneske her og voksne bør klare å skille fantasi fra virkelighet.

Neste år, ved samme tid, anbefaler jeg at sørlandets presteskap ifører seg sine gevanter, medbringende krusifiks, vievann og hvitløk kan de også innta sørlandsbyenes utesteder. Forhåpentligvis kan de da avverge slike tildragelser.

En drog fran kameraan, ett par skrek (åtminstone en lät som om hon faktiskt blev rädd på riktigt, förmoligen för att hon väntade sig middagsgästerna) nån försäkte få bus istället för godis och alla var generösa – alla vi gick till vill säga. För det är att balasera på slak lina att gå “trick  and  treating” här hemma i Sverige.Det krockar ju med Alla Helgons Dag, eller om de nu är Allhelgonadagen,  där disntinktionen är svårare att fatta än Halloween. Och nu har till och med Påven fördömt leken. (Sen när blev Sverige katolskt?)

Här hemma har häxorna swishat runt sen i tisdags, men nte förrän igår fick de godis vid vår därr. NÅn måta på förvirringen får det vara!

Låt oss slå fast en gång för alla: Halloween är 31 otkober, come hell or high water. Idag, alltså.

Det ÄR allhelgonahelgen. Och det ÄR samma sak – fast annorlunda. Det är faktiskt inte ett amerikanskt påfund – itan irländskt.

Och vi klarar ju av Tomte OCH Jesus barn till jul, så varför inte vålnader och gravljus nu?

Och allvarligt talat – är det inte ganska mysigt med lysande pumpor? Och oskyldigt med utklädda barn som tigger godis?

När vi bodde i Kew i London explodera häxinvasinen plötsligt nångång på 90-talet. Från ett år till ett annat hade de fladdrande höxorna förökat sig med flera hundra procent.

Det fanns en regel: Tänd en pumpa utanför dörren och du är med och leker. Släck den – eller strunta helt i att ha en – och du blir lämnad i fred.

Min bedårande lilla vampyr:

Idag gick jag upp klockan 5.00 för att göra mig i ordning. Jag hade fått ett jobb av Angelika Sliwinski, fotografen jag träffade på konserten. Jag skulle sminka en modell till vampyr. Sminkningen gick jättebra och jag fick följa med på fotosessionen ute i en park i Malmö. Det var en kall dag så tårarna rann mycket så jag fick bättra på sminkningen lite då och då och assistera fotografen med det hon behövde. Stackars modellen frös rejält eftersom hon skulle fotograferas i underkläder. Tyckte det var hur kul som helst och Angelika är en mycket begåvad fotograf. På fredag nästa vecka är det min tur att stå modell. Angelika ska fotografera mig Och då ska jag även få bilderna från denna sessionen färdigredigerade.
Senare på kvällen stack jag och Sofie ut en runda för att se hur Ängelholm firar Halloween. Jag sminkade mig till en diskret och romantisk vampyr – ovanligt! ^^ Vi stack in till Morris, där var det Halloweenfestande, så det var kul. Jag blev helt manisk när det började spela Alice Coopers The man behind the mask!! <33

This film is very old and very nearly silent. I’m going to call shenanigans on one point right out . . . a significant portion of this film is a guy sitting there reading a book about all the cool interesting vampire stuff you’re NOT seeing on screen. For shame!

The excessive quiet works to it’s advantage in the scenes where things do happen though, as it gives a sense of true isolation.

There’s some truly remarkable effects done entirely with shadow here, particularly one scene that I have absolutely no idea how they did considering the year. It had to have been stand-in’s, a cut, and a lighting change we can’t notice. It had to have been . . .

I give it two spooky pumpkins out of five.

This was a short film from France that played at Sundance. Christian sent me a link to it online (you will be able to watch it on youtube) I’m assuming because it reminded him of when we filmed Conversations at the End of the World. Crazy times. My mom was not happy that I drenched the basement in Christian’s blood (it was fake, I swear).

Anyway, this 13 minute long film was a fairly conventional zombie piece, but well produced.

I give it three spooky pumpkins out of five.

When I apply the ownership of “my” to it, I’m talking about when you close your eyes and think “Dracula,” the image that pops into your head is “your” Dracula. For me, THIS is my Dracula:

That, my friends, is Christopher Lee. (Pausing for the appropriate oohs and ahs.) Christopher Lee starred in seven of the nine films in the Dracula series from Hammer Films, from the late ’50’s to the early 70’s.

One of my greatest memories of childhood is my father and I, each Saturday afternoon, watching old horror films on The Channel 20 (WXON) Saturday Afternoon Thriller and Sir Graves Ghastly on channel 2 (WJBK). And, of those old films, my favorites were the Dracula movies.

And, among those Dracula movies, the Hammer films rose to the top. At the time, I probably wouldn’t have been able to talk about the production values, or the acting… I would have just said they were better. Despite my age, and my ability to analyze the films and explain what draws me to them, I find myself falling back into my childhood feelings about them – they are just better.

They weren’t slow and plodding, they didn’t look like they were filmed in someone’s basement with cardboard props, and Dracula was what he was supposed to be – a monster. Evil and nasty, and not terribly talkative.

(All due respect, and I say this as a fan of both Angel and Forever Knight, but I miss when vampires weren’t all sensitive and brooding.)

I really enjoyed these movies, but hadn’t seen them in years. Oh, there have been a few releases for home entertainment over the years, but nothing great or even complete (due to rights issues, I believe).

Then, a few weeks ago, I was told about a DVD set that was out from Warner Bros. called, “4 Film Favorites: Draculas.” This is a two disc set, containing four of the Christopher Lee/Hammer Films Dracula movies – Horror of Dracula, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Dracula A.D. 1972. The price for this assembled bit of cinema greatness? Around ten bucks.

I was immediately doubtful. First, I’m not a fan of double sided discs when it comes to movies. They seem really susceptible to scratching and damage. Second, squeezing four films onto two discs usually mean low quality. Third, what could I really expect for $10.00?

But, fan of the films that I am, I went ahead and bought the collection.

And I’m so glad I did.

What you get is a pretty straightforward, no frills kinda deal with these. You essentially get the movie and its trailer for each film. That about does it in the area of “extras” on these discs. What makes this set worth more than the cost though is the quality of the films themselves.

Remember how I mentioned there have been various releases of these films in the past? Generally, those releases were crummy, lifted from less than stellar prints of the originals. This set, though, is sharp and crisp, not plagued with saturation problems or muffled sound like previous releases. And, the original trailers? They are pretty cool.

I would love to have a complete set of the nine Hammer Films Dracula movies, but I’m happy that four of the best of these films are collected here. (Maybe someday, the rights issues will be cleaned up and we’ll see an entire set!)

(Just in case you were interested, that set would include: Horror of Dracula, The Brides of Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Scars of Dracula, Dracula A.D. 1972, The Satanic Rites of Dracula, and The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires.)

I’m not going to go into each of the movies right now, for two reasons. One, tacking on four movie reviews to this is far more work than I want to do right now (yeah, I’m lazy, but I may review the movies separately at a later time), and, Two, it is four movies for ten bucks! Even if they were horrible, that’s only $2.50 a film. I’m sure you’ve spent more on a bad film sometime in the last decade!

But, these aren’t bad. They are pretty awesome. Admittedly, I’m biased, and I’m sure nostalgia is playing a big part, but even so, I would not hesitate recommending this set to someone that wants to see some really great Dracula movies.

Så åbnede man lige sin inbox i går aftes og finder dette billede.
