by Monika Bartyzel – Cinematical.com

It’s time for the second feature written, directed, and starring the Muscles from Brussels Jean-Claude Van Damme. First we had The Quest, a story he whipped up with the help of Frank Dux (the man Bloodsport was based on). Now there’s The Eagle Path. Once called Full Love, this sucker is all-out classic Van Damme with faux serious acting, violence, and of course, the potential love of a sexy woman.

Claudia Bassols

Van Damme plays “Frenchy,” a military vet and former mercenary who hides from his past by working as a taxi driver in East Asia. When he picks up a sexy woman one day, he becomes obsessed with the idea of improving her life and decides to do so without her approval. With help from his special ops friends, he sets out to “save” her, and as the official synopsis says: “War is hell, but nothing they’ve done could have prepared them for this.”

Remember back in June when I spoke of the new proposed Universal Soldier film? Yeah well, lethargics

Remember back in June when I spoke of the new proposed Universal Soldier film? Yeah well, lethargics need just press this to be warped to the zone of June when it was posted. I’m also using the same picture from that post as, hey, lethargy rules, brother. Rock on.

Turns out my prediction was indeed wrong too, as this trailer suggests there’s going to be a lot of fighting and bad dialogue throughout. I sense a pattern in the series. After the official synopsis will be the trailer, and after that will be….some chicken? I’m hungry.

Words please!

With stolen top-secret technology, terrorists have created a next-generation Universal Soldier – an elite fighter genetically altered into a programmable killing machine. With this “UniSol” (Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei “The Pit Bull” Arlovski) leading the way, they seize the crippled Chernobyl nuclear reactor, threatening to unleash a lethal radioactive cloud. The only one who can stop them is Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), a UniSol who’s been decommissioned for years. Reactivated and retrained, Deveraux must make a full-out assault on the heavily armed fortress. But inside, he’ll discover not one but two of these virtually indestructible warriors. Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren), Deveraux’s vicious UniSol enemy from the original Universal Soldier, has been secretly reanimated and upgraded. Now, these elite fighters are locked, loaded and programmed to kill; and the fate of millions hinges on this high-action showdown.

And I could’ve done 100. Man, I wanted to do 100. I left a lot of good movies off this list.

And I could’ve done 100. Man, I wanted to do 100. I left a lot of good movies off this list. But 50 is going to have to do. The only rule is that franchises are lumped together. No need to differentiate between originals and sequels and trilogies. This is a team sport.

50) LION KING

Many have challenge, but this Lion is still the King of all Disney movies.

49) WHITE MEN CAN’T JUMP

As a park protégé basketball player myself I loved the mentality of this movie.

48) I, ROBOT

Neo-phobic message aside, I love Will Smith’s me-against-the-world attitude and “somehow I told you so just doesn’t say it,” is something we all want to say at some point.

47) SUPERMAN II

A note to all future Superman projects: give the guy an enemy who can actually kick his ass!

46) THE WOOD

I can totally relate to having great friends you are scared to leave behind.

45) RUSH HOUR

I’m a sucker for the action comedy, so the King of stunts, Jackie Chan and “Smokey” combo does it for me.

44) TANGO & CASH

Again, this is action/comedy, but opposite to Rush Hour with big brutal Sly and quirky Kurt. Lot of guns, lots of actions, lots of punchlines, little subtext. The way an action movie should be.

43) BLOODSPORT

One man on a mission to uphold the honor of his mentor…it’s a lost trait these days.

42) PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

In the 80’s this movie would have sucked, but special effects and good-natured characters make it the best pirate movie ever.

41) HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME

Samurai swords and a touching story about friendship and immortality, what’s not to love?

40) ROLE MODELS

Paul Rudd is way funnier as a jerk than as a lovable loser. Sean William Scott is way funnier as a Stifler clone. Jane Lynch and Bobb’e J. Thompson should definitely star in the sequel.

39) X2

The best of the X-Men movies. When Wolverine goes berserk inside the X-Mansion? Bad ass.

38) THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK

The Riddick character is one of my sci-fi favorites. Totally badass but a little too soft in this movie. It was a fun ride non-the-less.

37) ABOVE THE RIM

A fun clash between organized ball and street hoops. Probably my favorite basketball movie ever.

36) UNDER SIEGE

Most people call it Die Hard on a boat and that’s fine with me. One against one hundred…you’d take the one if his name was Steven Segal (before he got fat).

35) COLLATERAL

I love Tom Cruise as the bad guy and Jamie Foxx as the reluctant Hero. This movie is deeper than people believe. It slipped this low only because of the crappy ending.

34) AMERICAN GANGSTER

All I have to say is it’s about time they did a classy black version of the Godfather.

33) TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES I/II/TMNT

I loved this movie so much I put peanut butter on my pizza for a year. The third movie drags this franchise down.

32) REDBELT

Thee most realistic martial arts movie I have ever seen and a great story to boot.

31) ANY GIVEN SUNDAY

If you ever wondered what goes on in the front offices of the NFL, this movie is exactly what you’d think happens…real or not.

30) MONEY TRAIN

Wesley kicks ass, J-Lo was still hot and Woody is still funny.

29) K9

I love dogs. A dog as a cop partnered with James Belushi? Come on.

28) BE COOL

The Rock and Vince Vaughn by far are the funniest, most unlikely duo I have ever seen. I cried during the chicken bone scene.

27) ASSASSINS

Mano y Mano, battle of wills and guns to see who will be #1. Gotta love it.

26) THE LAST SAMURAI

Aside from the part that again a white man must save a dying culture from themselves (see Dances With Wolves, Last of the Mohicans, etc…) this is an amazing story and in-depth look at samurai culture.

25) MONSTER SQUAD

After seeing this movie I literally gathered my friends, made stakes and went out hunting vampires.

24) HANCOCK

The first major black superhero not a vampire, or former lame ass criminal and it’s freakin’ Will Smith! How cool is that?

23) DIE HARD/DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE/LIVE FREE DIE HARD

The original one man versus an army movie so many other have tried to copy.

22) DRUMLINE

I spent a year at an HBC so this movie hit home. I also love that it’s an intelligent, true to life tale of young black life without all the vulgarity.

21) HARD TO KILL

Steven Segal as the man who won’t die kicking ass and taking names using akido make me a happy guy.

20) MAVERICK

This is my favorite cat and mouse tale. I didn’t understand the poker, but I didn’t need to.

19) LABYRINTH

The music alone is enough to love this movie…seriously. Wishing a sibling away is another.

18) CONSTANTINE

When you stir comic book fantasy, God and good storytelling into a pot, Constantine is the only movie that comes out.

17) COMING TO AMERICA

Thee most classic comedy ever. And if you don’t believe then, “yes, yes, f— you too!”

16) THE RUNDOWN

The fact that Arnold literally passes the action hero torch to Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson in this movie was awesome.

15) THE PRINCESS BRIDE

The ultimate date movie, girls go for the love, guys go for the sword fighting. Why aren’t there more movies like that today?

14) UNDERWORLD/ UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION

I was never a fan of Shakespeare, but you put vampires up against werewolves and I’ll watch it.

13) STAR WARS EPISODE 2-6

Phantom Menace was crap full of characters no one cared about, but once Anakin grabbed a light saber I was hooked.

12) SPIDERMAN 2

Clearly the best of the bunch… and by bunch I mean two. Three never happened as far as I’m concerned. The brutal fight scenes on the roof of the train was exactly what I dreamed a Spiderman movie would feature.

11) JUICE

The ultimate urban tale of power and corruption, you can not live in the inner city and not like this movie.

10) THE LAST DRAGON

First the Wiz, boofed (a black spoof) the Wizard of Oz and then The Last Dragon boofed…Bruce Lee. A real f—in’ person! You wouldn’t think that Bruce Lee(roy) could survive in the hood, but this movie proves otherwise. And isn’t Sho’nuff just the baddest mo’ fo’ around?

Best Moment: The glow, duh.

9) BEVERLY HILLS COP I/II/III

I loved them all. You put a black cop from Detroit in Beverly Hills? Love it! And after working in Beverly Hills for two years this movie is all the more funny. The culture shock was well-defined and the hijinx remind you of a stand up act with a little bit of danger thrown in. This is the best Odd Couple of my generation.

Best Moment: When Axel makes up a perfectly good lie to free his partners from punishment and they go and tell the truth anyway.

  BIKER BOYZ

A black motorcycle gang. Love it again! The bike tricks were sick, the races were adrenaline pumping and the cast was good. Any kid who’s ever felt his own potential had to identify with Luke’s character. The father-son dynamic also touched me. Then it was as a son looking to be better than his father, and now as a father I’m sure I’d sacrifice for my own son too.

Best Moment: the OG way the Black Knights roll in at the beginning.

7) BLADE

Keep in mind Blade was the first Marvel hero to make it to the big screen since the 70’s. This movie lived up to every expectation I had for a Blade movie. The fusion of martial arts and vampires was slick enough to be effective. Blade was a trained hunter and Wesley Snipes was perfect casting. And since it was Marvel he also felt more like a superhero than some silly slayer. The second one was even better.

Best Moment: every scene where he puts on his shades. I know it’s cheesy, but it just so damn dope.

6) QUEEN OF THE DAMNED

By far thee best vampire movie ever made. I absolutely hate seeing vampires staked and beat up by average Joes with no skills. These vampires are powerful, sensual without being slutty and Aalyiah was great. I miss her. The mythology was right on point with what I envisioned and the action was fierce with an edge of scary. I still don’t get why vampires are always shirtless, but it seemed to fit this movie.

Best Moment: The stage scene where Towsend’s sings to the vampires before he kills them. It’s way more testosteroney then it sounds.

5) DESPARADO

The Wild West style shootouts are unbelievably good and delightfully exaggerated. I bet no one ever looked at a guitar case the same way after seeing this movie. Antonio as a smooth talking repentant killer entertains even better with Salma as the romantic lead.

Best Moment: When Bucho discovers that his men killed the man sent to help them.

4) INDEPENDENCE DAY

Thee most patriotic heartwarming movie I’ve ever seen. The way the world is forced to come together to save itself was great. The aliens were just right and the action was out of this world (no pun intended…well…a little). Considering this is the movie that launched Will Smith July 4th mania, it obviously had a huge impact on society.

Best Moment: Clearly it’s the speech by Bill Pullman at the end. Close second is when the crazy farmer sacrifices himself while his son watches proudly. I still tear up at those moments.

3) KICKBOXER

It’s such a simple story, an amateur fighter is driven to be the best so he can avenge his fallen brother. Van Damme is at his best when he’s the determined underdog. You had to wonder if he would succeed or not, and it was total triumph when he did. This is a pure martial arts movie without any gimmicks to fall back on and it never even stumbles.

Best Moment: Split kick. If it’s a Van Damme movie, it has the split kick in it.

2) BATMAN BEGINS/THE DARK KNIGHT

These movies are so good they make Keaton’s Batman look stupid. I was never overly thrilled about them anyway. This is what Batman should have been. Not a super man, but a man doing super things…and with a meaning behind it. I really felt like if I, or anyone had the money and dedication we could do everything he was doing. There was no bat-shark-repellent or fantasy crap involved. They took Batman 100% serious and so did we, or risk getting our faces bashed in.

Best Moment: The Jokers entrance in the Dark Knight when he puts a pencil through a guys eye.

1) BAD BOYS I/II

If you grew up on Fresh Prince and Martin this was the best thing since peanut butter teamed with Jelly. Some people just make a good mix and I would put money on it that Martin and Will improvised a lot of that because it shows. This movie has it all, girls, guns and gaffes. We’ve seen buddy cops films before, but there has never been two cops this damn rugged, smooth and hilarious all at the same time. You wanted to be them, which is unlike most dopey, silly buddy cop films. It also helps that my friends quoted this movie more than a Chappelle Show episode so it’s ingrained in my brain. And the sequel was well worth the wait.

Best Moment: When Martin interrogates his daughter’s date with the help of Will.

Honorable Mentions from my 2008 list (That were pushed out of the top 50 this year):

WHO AM I

This underrated Jackie Chan movie made the cut purely for the climatic 2-on-1 fight scene at the end. Best. Fight. Ever.

THE GOONIES

If you call yourself an 80’s baby, you absolutely have to love this movie.

THE MATRIX

Bullet time animation may be the butt of the joke now, but it sure was sickening in this movie.

LION KING

Many have challenge, but this Lion is still the King of all Disney movies.

49. WHITE MEN CAN’T JUMP

As a park protégé basketball player myself I loved the mentality of this movie.

48. I, ROBOT

Neo-phobic message aside, I love Will Smith’s me-against-the-world attitude and “somehow I told you so just doesn’t say it,” is something we all want to say at some point.

47. SUPERMAN II

A note to all future Superman projects: give the guy an enemy who can actually kick his ass!

46. THE WOOD

I can totally relate to having great friends you are scared to leave behind.

45. RUSH HOUR

I’m a sucker for the action comedy, so the King of stunts, Jackie Chan and “Smokey” combo does it for me.

44. TANGO & CASH

Again, this is action/comedy, but opposite to Rush Hour with big brutal Sly and quirky Kurt. Lot of guns, lots of actions, lots of punchlines, little subtext. The way an action move should be.

43. BLOODSPORT

One man on a mission to uphold the honor of his mentor…it’s a lost trait these days.

42. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

In the 80’s this movie would have sucked, but special effects and good natured characters make it the best pirate movie ever.

41. HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME

Samurai swords and a touching story about friendship and immortality, what’s not to love?

40. ROLE MODELS

Paul Rudd is way funnier as a jerk than a lovable loser. Sean William Scott is way funnier as a Stifler clone. Jane Lynch and Bobb’e J. Thompson should definitely star in the sequel.

39. X2

The best of the X-Men movies. When Wolverine goes berserk inside the X-Mansion? Bad ass.

38. THE CRONICLES OF RIDDICK

The Riddick character is one of my favorite in Sci-Fi. Totally badass but a little too soft in this movie. It was a fun ride non the less.

37. ABOVE THE RIM

A fun clash between organized ball and street hoops. Probably my favorite basketball movie ever.

36. UNDER SIEGE

Most people call it Die Hard on a boat and that’s fine with me. One against one hundred…you’d take the one if his name was Steven Segal (before he got fat).

35. COLLATERAL

I love Tom Cruise as the bad guy and Jamie Foxx as the reluctant Hero. This movie is deeper than people believe. It slipped this low only because of the crappy ending.

34. AMERICAN GANGSTER

All I have to say is it’s about time they did a classy black version of the Godfather.

33. TEENAGE MUTAT NINJA TURTLES I/II/TMNT

I loved this movie so much I put peanut butter on my pizza for a year. The third movie drags this franchise down.

32. REDBELT

Thee most realistic martial arts movie I have ever seen and a great story to boot.

31. ANY GIVEN SUNDAY

If you ever wondered what goes on in the front offices of the NFL, this movie is exactly what you’d think happens…real or not.

30. MONEY TRAIN

Wesley kicks ass, J-Lo was still hot and Woody is still funny.

29. K9

I love dogs. A dog as a cop partnered with Jim Belushi? Come on.

28. BE COOL

The Rock and Vince Vaughn by far are the funniest, most unlikely duo I have ever seen. I cried during this movie.

27. ASSASSINS

Mano y Mano, battle of wills and guns to see who will be #1. Gotta love it.

26. THE LAST SAMURAI

Aside from the part that again a white man must save a dying culture from themselves (see Dances With Wolves, Last of the Mohicans, etc…) this is an amazing story and in depth look at samurai culture.

25. MONSTER SQUAD

After seeing this movie I literally gathered my friends, made stakes and went out hunting vampires.

24. HANCOCK

The first major black superhero not a vampire, or former lame ass criminal and it’s freakin’ Will Smith! How cool is that?

23. DIE HARD/DIE HARD WITH A VENGENC/LIVE FREE DIE HARD

The original one man versus an army movie so many other have tried to copy.

22. DRUMLINE

I spent a year at an HBC so this movie hit home. I also love that it’s an intelligent true to life tale of young black life without all the vulgarity.

21. HARD TO KILL

Steven Segal as the man that won’t die kicking ass and taking names using akido make me a happy guy.

20. MAVERICK

This is my favorite cat and mouse tale. I didn’t understand the poker, but I didn’t need to.

19. LABRYINTH

The music alone is enough to love this movie…seriously. Wishing a sibling away is another.

18. CONSTANTINE

When you stir comic book fantasy, God and good storytelling into a pot, Constantine is the only movie that comes out.

17. COMING TO AMERICA

Thee most classic comedy ever. And if you don’t believe then, “yes, yes, f— you too!”

16. THE RUNDOWN

The fact that Arnold literally passes the action hero torch to Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson in this movie was awesome.

15. THE PRINCESS BRIDE

The ultimate date movie, girls go for the love, guys go for the sword fighting. Why aren’t there more movies like that today?

14. UNDERWORLD/ UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION

I was never a fan of Shakespeare, but you put vampires up against werewolves and I’ll watch it.

13. STAR WARS EPISODE 2-6

Phantom Menace was crap full of characters no one cared about, but once Anakin grabbed a light saber I was hooked.

12. SPIDERMAN 2

Clearly the best of the bunch… and by bunch I mean two. Three never happened as far as I’m concerned. The brutal fight scenes on the roof and on the train were exactly what I dreamed about in a Spiderman movie.

11. JUICE

The ultimate urban tale of power and corruption, you can not live in the inner city and not like this movie.

10. THE LAST DRAGON

9. BEVERLY HILLS COP I/II/III

I loved them all. You put a black cop from Detroit in Beverly Hills? Love it! And after working in Beverly Hills for a year this movie is all the more funny. The culture shock was well defined and the hijinx remind you of a stand up act with a little bit of danger thrown in. This is the best Odd Couple of my generation.

Best Moment: When Axel makes up a perfectly good lie to free his partners from punishment and they go and tell the truth anyway messing up his work.

8. BIKER BOYZ

A black motorcycle gang. Love it again! The bike tricks were sick, the races were adrenaline pumping and the cast was good. Any kid who’s ever felt his own potential had to identify with Luke’s character. The father son dynamic also touched me. Then it was as a son looking to be better than his father, and now as a father I sure I’ll be sacrificing for my own son.

Best Moment: the OG way the Black Knights roll in at the beginning.

7. BLADE

6. QUEEN OF THE DAMNED

By far thee best vampire movie ever made. I absolutely hate seeing vampires staked and beat up by average Joes with no skills. These vampires are powerful, sensual without being slutty and Aalyiah was great. I miss her. The mythology was right on point with what I envisioned and the action was enough to be fierce with an edge of scary. I still don’t get why vampires are always shirtless, but it seemed to fit this movie.

Best Moment: The stage scene where Towsend’s sings to the vampires before he kills them. It way more testosteroney then it sounds.

5. DESPARADO

The Wild West style shootouts are unbelievably good and delightfully exaggerated. I bet no one ever looked at a guitar case the same after seeing this movie. Antonio as a smooth talking repentant killer entertains even better with Salma as the romantic lead.

Best Moment: When Bucho discovers that his men killed man set to help them.

4. INDEPENDENC DAY

3. KICKBOXER

2. BATMAN BEGINS/THE DARK KNIGHT

1. BAD BOYS I/II

Honorable Mentions (That were pushed out of the top 50 this year):

3. WHO AM I

This underrated Jackie Chan movie made the cut purely for the climatic 2-on-1 fight scene at the end. Best. Fight. Ever.

2. THE GOONIES

If you call yourself an 80’s baby, you absolutely have to love this movie.

1. THE MATRIX

Bullet time animation may be the butt of the joke now, but it sure was sickening in this movie.

Would you rather have a great actor fake fighting in a movie or a great fighter fake acting in a movie?

I thought about this because I saw the preview for Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington. I love Denzel. But not enough to buy him as an action star. Not a Jackie-Chan-action-star anyway. I mean, in Bad Boys, did you see Will Smith mimicking Bruce Lee? No, that’s not his thing. Oh he will beat a villain into the ground, just not with a roundhouse. It would look weird (and probably hurt him more than the bad guy).

It didn’t look good in the Dark Knight either. Sure Christian Bale played a good Batman (though he could’ve used a cough drop) but if you noticed…all his fight scenes were not exactly Batman-esque. Either they pulled in so tight you couldn’t see what was going on, or his moves were so rigid and stiff he looked like a marching band major. Batman is fluid.

So I ask you, do you want to watch a kick ass Jason Statham, Jet Li, Van Damme type of movie and give up hope that you’re watching Shakespeare? or do you want an academy award winning performance and give up hope that this guy could actually kick ass?

This is a no brainier for me, give me true action any day of the week. Impress me with your moves not your mouth (don’t do it…too easy). Jackie Chan was making badass film long before he could speak english…and no one cared. Remember, you can teach a fighter how to act, but you can’t teach an actor how to fight.

From SciFiMoviePage.com

Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, Universal Soldiers: The Next Generation will be directed by John Hyams, son of Peter Hyams of Timecop, 2010 and Capricorn One fame. It is the second sequel to 1992’s Universal Soldier.

In the original movie Luc Devereaux (Van Damme) and Andrew Scott (Lundgren), both killed in Vietnam, are brought back to life by the U.S. military as near-perfect soldiers. According to Fantastique magazine in this sequel a deranged Chechen nationalist named Basayev has taken control of Chernobyl, site of the infamous nuclear disaster, and threatens to release radioactive clouds unless his blackmail demands are met.

Devereaux joins a group of re-animated soldiers held in a secret army installation. Their mission: to take back Chernobyl and disarm the explosives set to release the radioactive clouds. Devereaux is however surprised to find that one of the soldiers is a clone of his former sergeant, Andrew Scott, who has no recollection of him. The two soldiers are however captured by Basayev’s troops and using mind control technology Basayev turns the two soldiers against each other. Wounded and isolated Devereaux must fight Andrew to save the world from cataclysmic ruin . . .

Well today on FilmWipe365 we’re going to do something a little different. We are going to celebrate the worst that cinema has to offer. Instead of reeling of bad performances from the archives we will keep it nice and fresh focusing only on the actors who have been awful in the last 10 years. This list is purely subjective but is backed up by anyone who has watched their horrible films.

Keanu Reeves

Does his name really surprise anyone? The creepiest man in Hollywood deserves the rating that we have given him. His performance have been terrible in hundreds of films. Apart from the original Matrix (he has stolen the character of Neo and played him in every role since) he has not been good in any film. The man who makes the word versatility seem like the hardest one in the English language. It is not hard Keanu. Happy = Smiley face. Sad = Unahppy face. Many directors have seen carefully scripted characters turn into monosyllabic depressives who only wear black and look continually like they are going to kill themselves. Neo in the Matrix, Donnie Barksdale in The Gift, Bob Arcter in A Scanner Darkly and Alex Wyler The Lake House are examples of how he is the same character in every film. I had hoped his career would have finished after the Matrix and he would have disappeared without a trace. However, instead he has reappeared time and again looking more and more depressed. Think of us Keanu. We are depressed as well. Watching you makes sticking rusty nails into my eyes seem like a barrel of laughs.

Sandra Bullock

I won’t say too much about Sandra because she tries, and she is in my guilty pleasure film. For those two reasons she deserve to be mentioned but not assassinated. However, she is another performer who plays the same role time and again. Apart from Crash, which for all of its excellent reviews I am not a fan of the film or her performance, Bullock plays the same quirky and supposedly adorable female character in every film. From Miss Congeniality to Two Weeks Notice she is a variation of the same character. Unfortunately as she ages the character becomes less and less believable as you’re thinking she should be developing now. Yet she is playing the same role she played 15 years ago. She is talented but has created the flickchick versions of Van Damme straight to DVD classics. The only difference being is her’s get released in the cinema.

Kira Kngihtley

She is the worst actor i have ever had the misfortune to watch. Anyone who has seen Pirates of the Caribbean 3 will remember her infamous fit on the beach. It is awful. It is the worst scene in movie history. Gore Verbinski (the films director) must have been physically restrained from trying to kill himself when he saw that on his monitor. After he was drugged and the scene edited into the final version he must have been pained to see her performance in The Duchess which surely led to another suicide attempt. Hollywood studios must be hoping for world wide Harikari as she is rumoured to be in the forthcoming My Fair Lady remake. This is such a grave prospect cinemas will be providing free medical care as well as 3d glasses for anyone who enters the cinema. Apart from Joe Wrights Atonement (and I think we can thank Mr Wright for getting blood from a stone when he got a decent performance out of her) she has been awful in everything. Her career is like a box of rotten apples that went out of date 5 years ago.

Orlando Bloom

This is a tricky one. He can’t act. But he is likeable. His performances make pinocchio seem like he was a real boy all along. Forgetting Pirates of the Caribbean which he is terrible in. He has been ok in several films. But he is just a bit dull. Elizabethtown is case in point. He tries so hard to make it work. But you sit there thinking “This is Orlando Bloom pretending to have feelings and be American”. I can tell you now he fails in both. Even though this is true I don’t hate him as an actor. But he isn’t good. I think he needs to get his teeth stuck into some stage work to really up his skills. Appearing in such large franchise films has blunted his talent and has left an actor as useful as a wet leaf.

Ben Barnes

Followers of FilmWipe365 will know Ben Barnes’ crimes to acting well by now. He is the Daily Sport of actors. Cheap and shallow. He has no depth. Emotions are a concept he looked at briefly and then decided he would be better placed brooding through films. While this might work when your in your 20s it will not in your 40s. Youth is on his side. Instead of developing his meagre talents he took cash and went for it. Hopefully he will be dropped from all future films and then pushed off Brighton Pier never to be seen again.

Are you ready? Yesterday many readers will have felt that their soul had been dirtied by my review of the guilt pleasure classic Forces of Nature. Well today i am going to go one worst than that and review a Jean Claude Van Damme film. Admittedly I am reviewing his only socially acceptable film JCVD but I still feel a little dirty in doing so. Before i begin i would like to clarify a couple of things. Firstly, even though this film is acceptable, it in no way exhonerates Mr Van Damme for his crimes to cinema. In fact he deserves a whole wing in Guantanamo Bay where he can be tortured repeatedly for 30 years for what he has done. Secondly, one good film does not = a good actor. Those who believed that his performance was oscar worthy (such as Time Magazine) are severely exaggerating how good a performance this was. When compared to his other work the film is like watching Usain Bolt instead of Rick Waller in the 100 meters. However, one good performance rarely equals an Oscar and certainly does not mean your a great actor. With those points clarified we shall begin.

JCVD follows Mr Van Damme, a washed up out of work former star returning to his home Brussels. After being adored by every person he meets, Van Damme goes to the post office to temporarily solve his financial problems. While in the post office he finds himself caught up in a hostage situation. The police believe he is a conspirator; in fact he is actually working to help save the hostages.

The description makes the film sound like a watered down typical piece of Van Damme rubbish. However the film is very different from anything he has made before. The film has all the qualities of a high value European art film. The production values are very high (a rarity in Van Damme’s career). When the film is in French it does not look as though they are speaking some highly developed alien language where your mouth moves and then words come out 20 seconds later. The characters actually have a depth and are not just superficial dolls repeating lines when a string with cash at the end is pulled.

Rightfully the plaudits have focus on Mr Van Damme. He adds depth to a character you would never have believed he could do. Inevitably the character is a reflection of himself. You can’t help but believe that he is heavily drawing on the lows of his own career and the frustration and emotion associated with that. You also get the indications that his mental health problems allowed him to flesh out the confusion exhibited periodically. There is little to fault with his performance. It is delightfully different, exciting exhilarating but a little surreal. There is a real sense that he is searching for legitimacy and respect. Understandable emotions to feel. But the film does descend into moments where you sense this is purely to exhibit the actor he could have been rather than the character he is in the film.

Director Mabrouk El Mechri is the man who deserves greater adulation than the film’s star. His expert direction is what makes Van Damme look as good as he does. The cinematography is exquisite giving a film a real and yet strangely modern feel. Excellent directorial touches such as the way the film cuts into the story from different angles adds something different and innovative. Possibly his finest achievement is the fact that he makes you believe that this is perfectly real. You leave the cinema questioning which Hollywood actor could become embroiled in a similar drama because of the choices they have made in the career.

Overall this is delightful film and is one of the most unusual films you are likely to see on DVD. Van Damme is good but he is playing himself at his worst. He is not creating a character. He is the character. Director Mabrouk El Mechri is a huge talent. His career deserves to fly after this. My only word of warning is be prepared for the odd moment of show boating. The film is about and stars a man whose career has been horrible. This is his redemption and he certainly makes sure you know it.

Overall – 7/10 Slick
