Van She has teamed up with B-Live (A social musical experiment where Bacardi gives select artists a bunch of boos and tells them to come up with something that’ll get your ass moving). These Aussies have man-birthed an original sounding track that covers the Blue Oyster Cult’s song entitled “The Reaper.” If you have been a fan of this Australian electro-pop group like we have, then you’ll appreciate their new track. Just think of how good their track “Kelly” was, and you’ll understand what kinda caliber this track is on. Enjoy!

Its been sometime since Van She have came out with a hit of their own, nor have I heard anything of recent by their offshoot, Van She Tech, the moniker used when they remix the work of other artists’. All this aside, the electropop band from Australia sustain their throwback sound in their cover of Blue Oyster Cult’s 1976 classic, The Reaper. As the story goes, Van She requested to record the cover after headlining Bacardi Express in Australia.

Ever since we got our hands on that radio rip of Van She covering Blue Öyster Cult’s ‘(Don’t Fear) The Reaper’, we have been waiting impatiently for it to drop. The Bacardi B-LIVE folks have been telling us they were releasing it soon soon, but it never seemed to come soon enough!

Well, it’s finally here and, to be honest, it was worth the wait. Those huge Van She bass and lead synths are back! This is easily the best version of this song I’ve heard, Van She’s Indie-Space-Disco is prefect for it!

This just arrived in my inbox.  I’ve got to admit that I’m always a little hesitant to get on the cover bandwagon – especially when the track is originally from an epically cool 70s band such as Blue Öyster Cult. Nothing, in my opinion, can come close to matching the brooding psychedelic & progressive craziness of that era … but enter Sydney based Van She (admittedly a notcooyet favourite) on another BACARDI B-LIVE project.  I love the fact that they have seemingly popped their heads out of nowhere again to put their stamp on this rock classic – this time with their undeniable 80’s + post punk + synth pop style.  Hopefully this means some new material in the new future?

Blue Öyster Cult’s Don’t fear the reaper has been a favorite for a long time and now it’s back in a new version. Van She have made a cover and the only version available is this radio rip. I’ve had it on mp3 for some weeks but it just came up on YouTube.  It’s really contrasting from the original but the magic is still there.

Has anyone heard that radio rip of what sounds like a Van She (myspace) cover of Blue Oyster Cult’s ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’? (I’m still amazed radio rips get around on the internets. I mean, come on, this is the 21st century.)

Personally, I’m digging the Van She take on it which, frankly, doesn’t take it too far from the original (EDIT: what was I thinking? It’s massively different, but Van She have that timeless, spaced-out vocal thing going on, much like Blue Oyster Cult). But if there’s one thing it’s missing — it’s more cowbell.

It’s pretty much impossible to find an embed-able version of that old SNL sketch, so you’ll have to watch it here.

If you follow us on Facebook, you may have heard me rave about this new one a few weeks ago. Well, the good folk at triple j have offered it up as a free download! Awesome. Matt Van Shie has gone solo. Well, hopefully it’s just a side project for a bit…this is all in between supposedly working on the new Van She album. I blogged about the new Van She track yesterday.

Also, if you want a pretty good idea of what his other stuff is going to sound like, check out his MySpace for some extra tracks. He’s producing some good stuff I think. Bit different to Van She, but still good. The track Journey on his MySpace features some work from Mikey from the band so he doesn’t seem to be steering too far away.

Después de haber sacado su disco de debut “V” y de hacer mixes para gente tan dispar como Feist, Ladyhawke, Empire Of The Sun, Tiga, Dragonette o The Klaxons, ahora vuelven con un nuevo tema que se supone, tendría que estar en su próximo disco. El tema se ha estrenado esta semana pasada el la radio australiana TripleJ, que por lo que he entendido, debe ser una especie de 40 principales en indie….

ok. So if you keep up with the music bloggers out there, you may have noticed that Van She have a new track out. It’s no secret that Van She are probably one of my favourite bands out there so this is pretty exciting for me!

The boys are notorious for not really updating their MySpace/their facebook. But, if you keep up with their twitter, you’ll know that they’re currently working on a new album. So, just like their debut, V, it’ll probably take them about 2 years to finally get it out there!

But, there is good news. Triple J’s Mix Up dropped a newy from the fellas just recently. (Don’t Fear) The Reaper is pretty darn sweet. Covering an old 70’s track by Blue Öyster Cult, they’ve made it sound just like Van She. It’s a radio rip, so the quality isn’t great and who knows whether this is how it’ll sound in it’s final format, but still, it’s a goo indication as to where they’re headin!

So, without further ado, here it is.

“I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!”

Probably one of the greatest SNL skits of all time… if you’re unfamiliar with the phrase “more cowbell”, enlighten yourself here, you Philistine. The skit immortalized the song featured within — (Don’t Fear) The Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult — and since then it’s become somewhat of a cult classic for its comedic value and for being so inexplicably catchy. As a result, the song has been covered by scores of artists in a number of different styles, including Van She, s.e.k.s., and Elliott Smith. Even Belle and Sebastian has covered the song, but sadly I couldn’t find an .mp3 online, merely torrents that would take too long to download. Anyhow, enjoy the great diversity of interpretations of this classic hit! (Could still use more cowbell…)

Didya miss me? Ya did, did ya? Well, lucky fer you, I got what you need: new sounds. Not all are necessarily “New” per se, but I hope they are for you.  This is gunna be a short and a sweet one. Lots of different things, no real “theme” here. Just stuffs. Here we go….!

“Skeleton Boy” by Friendly Fires – Why? b/c I was listening to them all day yesterday and I stil lhad this song in mah head today. THAT’S WHY. Now, it’s your turn.

“Open Your Eyes” – United States of Electronica – Why? Well, aside from the slightest slice of cheesy in this song, I manage to enjoy it anyway. Ah, who am I kidding? I like it. If you don’t agree, then don’t listen and move on to the next.

Pyramid Rock

Not Hard Enough

For the sixth year in a row, the Pyramid Rock Festival returns to Victoria to bring in the New Year, from the 29^th of December 2009 until the 1^st of January 2010.

Set on a private coastal farm in Phillip Island, roughly two hours drive from Melbourne; Pyramid Rock is a camping music festival that caters for over 12,000 festival-goers from across Australia and will be showcasing over 50 musical acts, including Empire of the Sun, Van She, Architecture in Helsinki and Grinspoon.

The festival is an all ages event. Property is searched for alcohol, glass bottles, fireworks, flares and dangerous weapons. Alcohol is to be purchased and consumed in the designated licensed area only. According to the terms and conditions of entry, breach of these conditions ‘may’ lead to the confiscation of such offending articles and the removal of the patron from the venue.

It is hard to take these terms and conditions seriously when year after year thousands of patrons manage to smuggle copious amounts of alcohol into the event. Nathan Llewellyn, a 21year old apprentice electrician, who has attended the event for the past 4 years said it is easy to get alcohol into the festival because the people searching the cars are of similar age and can relate to everyone. “If you are nice and just talk to them they don’t really care, they are just people doing it for a free ticket,” he said.

“We didn’t even get checked last year, we just drove through one of the isles that no one was checking, so everyone got heaps of piss in,” Llewellyn said.

“The year before that, we bought a blue 78’ Gemini station wagon for 500 dollars just for the trip, then cut a hole in a fake LPG gas cylinder and filled it with grog.

“The girl searching the car even said to me ‘Give me a couple and I can say that you have given up all your grog.”

A regular volunteer at music festivals Claire Warden said the checks are done fairly briefly over the cars and people are asked if they have alcohol. “There are random thorough checks done,” Claire said.

“ There are no real consequences for us if we let someone through with alcohol because there is no real way of detecting that, ” she said.

“They just have to have faith that you are doing your job properly.”

Claire said a lot of the time many people just don’t hide their alcohol very well, therefore it is easy to confiscate it.

Bass Coast Shire Council Planning Department Manager Antony Duffel said he was not aware that a large amount of alcohol was getting into the festival. “The last festival was regarded as one of the best,” Mr. Duffel said.

“There were not as many complaints about various issues such as over consumption of alcohol,” he said.

“From a council point of view I think the organisers have done a good job.”

Festival Director Angus Cameron started the Pyramid Rock Festival in 2004 as a reaction to the massive party crowds that flock to Phillip Island every year to bring in the New Year. The main street        CLICK FOR PHOTO ALBUM in Cowes on New Years Eve used to be out of control; there was heaps of violence and lots of drunken bored teenagers trying to make their own entertainment.

Inspector Brian Curley of the Bass Coast Service Area said the Police supported the go ahead of the festival because it could be managed by paid security and promoted less of an impact on the Police and the community. “It is more open, well lit and secure,” Inspector Curley said.

“In terms of drugs and alcohol, we are not saying it is better to take it there more than in town, however it is easier to manage in a controlled environment,” he said.

“In town there are lane ways and dark streets.”

Currently people who get their alcohol confiscated are still allowed into the festival. Inspector Curley said the organisers should put in place some sort of penalty.

“There is not much of a deterrent,” Inspector Curley said.

“ People will just buy less to offset the risk.

“If it gets taken then it is just a loss of 40 dollars and they still get to go into the festival.”

Victoria University student Mitch Yeats said he wouldn’t go if there was the possibility that he wouldn’t be allowed into the festival. “ It would ruin it…it would be so much more expensive if we had to buy alcohol there,” Yeats said.

“ It wouldn’t have the same relaxed atmosphere,” he said.

“We go so we can sit around and drink with our friends at our campsites, when there are bad bands on and nothing to do.

“A whole part of the experience is sneaking in the alcohol and deciding a way to smuggle it in.”
