Guest blogger Jenny Bourne (Entertainment Business Management student) takes the opportunity to talk

Guest blogger Jenny Bourne (Entertainment Business Management student) takes the opportunity to talk about rich media, business online and the Peak Performance Project in VFS blog challenge #7

Rich media, or Interactive media, allows for active participation by the recipient. It establishes a two-way communication and opens up endless possibilities for effective marketing and PR. As a soon to be graduate, entering the Entertainment Industry, I recognize the way rich media has radically changed the way we do business.

The Peak Performance Project is the perfect example of how Interactive media has radically altered the music industry. The Peak Performance Project, a combined effort of 100.5 The Peak and Music BC, was created with the intent to help educate and develop local talent through an intensive period of training in all areas of the music business. And learn they did! Many of these artists are now well versed in the power of online marketing.

Independent small bands/artists such as Kuba Oms, The Left and Wassabi Collective can survive, even flourish, using rich media. These bands have created successful online marketing campaigns using social media and interactive sites such as facebook, twitter, personal blogs, and youtube. Their constant and active presence on these sites has brought them massive exposure to the mainstream media.

Before the contest began, I hadn’t heard of some of these bands, but now it is hard to escape many of their names. Particulary, Kuba Oms, his name for better or worse is inescapable. His presence is everywhere and you know what they say “Any press is good press!”

His rock n roll soul (…or effective use of social media) has attracted 297 Twitter followers and an impressive 5, 273 fans on Facebook! For me personally, this is proof that Interactive media can launch and hopefully sustain a successful career in the entertainment industry!

Like it or not rich media is here to stay.

Thanks Jenny! You can follow Jenny on Twitter by searching @JennyBourne. Keep an eye and ear out for Jenny with Holy Guacamole Productions (@Holy_Guacamole_ ) and their short film Mora Azul: A heart warming romantic comedy about love, wisdom and Blueberry pie! Coming in the new year!

Catch more video updates from Kuba Oms at http://www.youtube.com/user/KubaOmsTV including Part 1 and 2 of his performance at “100 Days to Go” Olympic countdown event.

Please take a few seconds to vote for Kuba to win the Peak Performance Project so he can take his music on the road and to a venue near you! http://kubaoms.com/vote

Since the first film of the franchise was released in 1994, Stargate has captured the imagination of

Since the first film of the franchise was released in 1994, Stargate has captured the imagination of sci-fi fans the world over. Each incarnation of the franchise – including the mega-successful Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis – carries the hefty responsibility of steering the massive fan base to a new cast of characters and set of circumstances.

Film Production grad John G. Lenic is one of the key players doing just that for the franchise’s newest series, Stargate Universe. The series debuts on Space on October 2, 2009.

John recently took some time out of his schedule to shed some light on how he contributes to the Stargate world.

Hi, John. Could you start off by explaining your role in Stargate Universe, and what kinds of responsibilities it entails?

JGL: My role at Stargate Universe is that of the Producer. That means that along with my showrunners, Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, I am responsible for the financial well-being of the series. That includes the budget, management of the cast and crew, making sure we can bring in the series on budget and on schedule after shooting 20 episodes per season. We spend approximately $50 million per year and employ approximately 250 people during the course of our shooting season, which runs from February until October.

You’ve been with Stargate for a while now. How has the franchise changed?

JGL: I have been with the Stargate franchise since December of 1996. It has changed so much yet so little over the past 13 years. In my opinion the biggest thing to change over the course of the 3 series has been the cast. The cast really set the tone for how well a show can work. We have been so lucky, for the most part, to have a wonderful cast to work with everyday. Folks like Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks, Chris Judge, David Hewlett, Rachel Luttrell, Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira, and Ming-Na are a few of the people that have made the last 13 years such an amazing experience for me… such a pleasure to be around them and see them everyday.

The stories on Stargate Universe are also so different then the last two shows. The scripts this year have been more about relationships and the people as opposed to fighting the bad guy of the week. The dilemmas are much more internal and far deeper. I have to applaud the writers for the job they have done on the scripts thus far. The episodes are nothing short of ingenious.

For those who love Stargate, you are going to love this reinvention of the franchise, and for those of you who have never watched an episode, please watch the pilot as you will see that this show really is something new, and Robert Carlyle is phenomenal. I am personally very proud of the work we have done this year.

For the benefit of current students and recent grads, could you describe your start in the industry? How did you make the transition from VFS grad to Producer?

JGL: After VFS, my start in the industry came when a Canadian producer, Raymond Massey, came to scout my parents’ house for use in the feature film Whale Music. I told him that if he needed any help, I would do anything. He told me to come to his office the following week and he would buy me lunch. Well, after that lunch, I never left his office. I worked with his other assistant, Shauna Bryan (another VFS Film Production grad), except I did it for free for a while, just absorbing anything I could – from budgeting to scheduling – he showed it all to me. When we started prepping the movie, the company was able to pay me $25/week. I learned so much, and with the other friends and VFS grads that were hired on the show, I loved every minute of it and made some great life long friendships.

After that, I went on to be Tracey Jeffrey’s assistant on several TV movies of the week. I worked with her on 11 of these ultra low budget ($1,650,000 — 16 day shoot) movies. This was all about being creative, as we didn’t have much money.

In September/October of 1996, I remember hearing that Stargate was going to be shooting in Vancouver and wanting to work on it, because I knew it would give me the opportunity to learn so much about working with everything from special effects explosions to visual effects and green screens. I got a meeting with Michael Greenburg and Richard Dean Anderson and they hired me to run the day-to-day workings of their personal production company (Gekko Film Corp.) and take care of them on Stargate as well as development for their company, and all the other projects they had on the go at that time. As Gekko had a financial interest in the show, and with my knowledge of budgets and numbers, Mike and Rick relied on me to stay on top of the budgets and cost reports with their interest in mind.

From there, MGM announced during the first season that the show was going for four seasons, and we decided that development for Gekko should be put on hold while Stargate was still happening. At that point Brad Wright and MGM offered to get me a DGC membership and move me into a Unit Manager role, as I was performing that role already.

From that point on, I worked under N. John Smith and Brad Wright and they groomed me to take over as a Production Manager in Season 3 and so on and so forth, until they moved me into a Producer/Production Manager role in Season 8 of SG-1. After that, I went on to Atlantis as the Producer/Production Manager, and then into the position of Producer on Stargate Universe.

It was while working on Atlantis that David Hewlett and I became friends, and went on to produce a low-budget movie between seasons. We made A Dog’s Breakfast for $120,000, and MGM distributed it. We decided in October that, come hell or high water, we were going to make a feature in January and set that as the start date. David wrote the script, cast his sister and some Stargate alumni, and that was that. We did it. We set our minds to it and just made it happen.

What do you think is the most common mistake young film professionals make?

JGL: I know it will sound cliché, but it’s not truly believing in yourself. Never lose focus of what your end goal is, but know that it is going to take baby steps to get there. Make sure you really take the time to enjoy, learn, and focus on each step you take along the way.

Stargate has a large, vocal fan base. How does that affect your job?

JGL: The fans are fantastic and for as much as they are vocal about things that they don’t like, they applaud and are even more vocal and supportive about the things they like.

It has been hard with the new cast recently because they read everything and often get down on themselves when they read that people aren’t even going to give the new show a chance if Chris Judge or David Hewlett aren’t on it.

I feel bad for this new cast because they shouldn’t be made to feel that way. It isn’t fair when people knock something before even giving it a chance. The new cast is doing such a fantastic job, it is amazing how these fans affect their mood just by writing those sorts of things. It happened on Atlantis when SG-1 ended too, but it has been the topic of conversation several times in the last few months.

It looks like you’ve recently joined fellow Stargate alum David Hewlett on Twitter (twitter.com/jglenic). Why did you sign up?

JGL: Hewlett has been on there for a year or two, and I never really cared about telling people what I was up to, but now, most of the cast from Universe are on there, and I have had so much fun hearing and listening to the things they have written about on a daily basis. I guess you could say that I gave into the peer pressure to try it out. So far my favorites are David Hewlett, Ming-Na and David Blue. They always have something interesting to say. If my perspective can help people, or if I can answer questions that help others on their career path, then I am glad to be a part of it.

After one look at your IMDB page, it’s clear that there’s been a steady upward progression in your career. What do you hope to do next?

JGL: For now, I love the show I am working on and the people I work with. It is important to me to focus on working with people that I want to be around and developing projects that I would want to see. I have a few things in development, and I think it is time to make another feature. I will keep you posted.

Please do!

Best of luck with Stargate Universe, John!

So after 8-9 weeks of scope changes and concept brainstorming & lots of process.. this is “sorta” the end-of-year final video piece I made in the Digital Design program at Vancouver Film School. There are some glitches & some refinements still to be fixed. The concept/brief was to create a 1min. story-based info-graphic commericla for a fake charity organization that sends footballs as a symbol to help under-privileged African children from the daily threats posed on them.
Please comments & critiques welcome…
I particularly like the winning motion graphics work of Indiana University’s Graphic Design MFA candidate Dave Harper and the title sequence for a student film “Crazy Enough” by Vancouver Film School’s Digital Design student Jorge Rolando Caneda Estrada.

Whereas Harper’s work is more of an infographic with a well researched narrative underpinning, Estrada’s work is a freestyle creative bonanza. Not having seen the film for which the title sequence was made, I’m assuming that its overall art direction had to conform to that of the film itself (or not?), but I still marvel at the creativity of Estrada’s work. It’s a clear example of what’s possible with a few geometric shapes, a little inspiration and presumably a lot of work.

Harper’s work inspires one to embrace that which is meaningful for the society as a whole. Motion (animated) graphics in particular have a way of providing a highly flexible medium for a message of any kind. It, like writing, or painting, or playing an instrument can (to a large extent) be learned, but it is the message, that which motivates one to seek expression in the first place, what truly sets one apart. I’ve always been curious about people’s motivations. What is the thing or things that make them tick, that move them into action.

Once a man comes to the realization that he’s been seduced by a beautiful women, it feels like

Once a man comes to the realization that he’s been seduced by a beautiful women, it feels like a painless kick to the head. But when it’s around a dozen stunning ladies… it’s freakin’ exhausting.

Cut to the auditions for After The Riots, a short film I wrote for Jacob Postmus. He was down a few crew members for the last day of casting, and I offered to lend a hand. I never foresaw how hard it would actually be.

The job Postmus gave me — reader. For anyone who doesn’t know what that entails, I’d have to read to the all the actresses who auditioned for the two parts. Unbeknownst to me, the majority wanted to try out for the role of “Ally.” With her sides, she plays a cat and mouse game while seducing the protagonist, me.

Priscilla Faia going for the kiss with Samuel B. Barnes in After The Riots.

What proceeded was hours of scheduled reads by women who gave it their all to win the part. Meaning, I had well over a dozen women act as if they were trying to seduce me, and folks, it confused me. I left Vancouver Film School, where the auditions were being held, like Neo after he’s unplugged from the matrix. It may not exist, but I perceived it to be real.

But it wasn’t. I was just splattered repeatedly by great acting from Vancouver’s finest. Unfortunately by the end, I was drenched.

The woman who scored the role was Priscilla Faia. I never did see her play Ally since she tried out for the part on one of the previous days of casting. I also wanted to watch some of the scenes during production, especially since the crew locked down a location at the airport. My schedule didn’t work out and I ended up being out of town during filming. I’ll be seeing After The Riots for the first time this Friday. I’m curious to see if Faia excells since all the others that auditioned emotionally drained me. I’m also anticipating seeing Postmus’ vision on screen. As a writer for hire, did I help him create compelling characters that keep us entranced for nine minutes?

I’ll find out Friday.

District 9 looks beautiful.

I’ve read so many articles and reviews and the website itself seems to demonstrate it’s pure exceptionality without any outside help. What makes me sad is that it isn’t released here in Korea until October 15th. Why must I wait so long?!

On a slight aside, a friend pointed me towards an article (located here) which shows how connected District 9 is to the Vancouver Film School, and it’s quite impressive how many key figures in the film’s production are graduates of VFS. Perhaps I should abandon ideas of doing a Masters in England in favour of heading out to Canada. Anyway, it’s an interesting read. Read it.

So, today marks the fact that I am two months away from attending my first day at Vancouver Film School. Or VFS for short. I cannot wait. It’s all boiled down to this. I think I will actually be pursuing my dream job for once. I will be done in two years time (hopefully) and will at that time return to Yellowknife with all that I will have learned.

Hoping to pursue a career in graphic design or game design. Can’t really know right now. I do know that I will have to share the story of Jeryes somehow. Whether it be in print or in a browser window or video game console, this must be done!

Top priority right now though: find a place to live! Haha. Hoping to find something downtown or in the Kitsilano area. Judy was right. The money that I will be saving in rent while living in Burnaby will only be spent on expensive commutes to downtown and back in taxi cabs. Might as well pay the extra for a decent location and travel convenience.

Two months is going to pass by so swiftly. Maybe I should start saying my goodbyes soon. I will definitely miss you, Yellowknife!

Today I finally had my first glimpse at being part of the VFS community. We had our orientation downtown atTinsel Town Cinemas, a few blocks away from my campus. Of coarse there was the formal stuff to address, get my student I.D. taken, greeting the person next to you, which I always hate doing since they are not in my class. But there was also the opprotunity to briefly meet my classmates who were from all over the world, Some from Canada, the U.S., Europe, South America, South Africa, Turkey, England, Australia, and the list goes on. Once I get to know some of these people a bit better I will try to get that list a little bit more organized. So now I wait a week until classes start on Monday August 31st. They give a week in between the orientation and start of classes so all the international students can get adjusted to Vancouver life. All I gotta get adjusted to is taking the new Canada Line skytrain to class everyday, which is awesome compared to the bus. On a side note the Head of the School was going through the different faculty members of the 13 different departments such as lighting, 3-D animation, Hair and Makeup, Digital Design (my program) and some others and the projects that the teachers have worked on are quite impressive. Works like the Matrix, Lord of the Rings, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Full House, Mad Men, Shrek, District 9and so on and so on… This is what I have been waiting for, it’s almost here.

by Kyle Rupprecht | Published August 13, 2009

This week, Vancouver Film School (VFS), Canada’s premier entertainment arts institution, is celebrating the release of District 9. The highly anticipated sci-fi thriller, produced by Peter Jackson, is directed/co-written by VFS graduate Neill Blomkamp, making his feature debut. The entire VFS community congratulates Blomkamp—and the 24 VFS Animation & Visual Effects alumni who worked on the film—for their impressive, exciting achievement.

District 9 depicts a settlement of extraterrestrial refugees marooned in Johannesburg, South Africa. Living in slum-like conditions, they unexpectedly find a kindred spirit in a government agent (Sharlto Copley) exposed to their biotechnology. The movie, which has been steadily building buzz for months, is already being praised by critics for its deft blend of action and intelligence. The Hollywood Reporter calls it “smart, savvy filmmaking of the highest order” and, in a cover story, Entertainment Weekly deems District 9 “the must-see movie of the summer.”

VFS graduates have won Emmys, Oscars and international acclaim before, but District 9 is the biggest theatrical feature film ever helmed by a VFS grad. In addition to 3D Animation & Visual Effects grad Blomkamp, the film was co-written by VFS Writing for Film & Television grad Terri Tatchell, with 3D alum Shawn Walsh serving as visual effects executive producer. With Vancouver’s Image Engine handling much of the visual effects work (in addition to local studios The Embassy and Zoic), District 9 represents both VFS’ niche within the visual effects industry as well as Vancouver’s own emergence as a go-to visual effects mecca.

“We are really excited about the upcoming release of District 9,” says Alastair Macleod, head of Animation & Visual Effects at VFS. “It’s great to see this work being done in Vancouver, and I’m really happy that so many of our grads could be involved.”

A hybrid of soul/pop/rock and a cross between John Mayer, Jamiroquai, Paolo Nutini, Jason Mraz, Ben

A hybrid of soul/pop/rock and a cross between John Mayer, Jamiroquai, Paolo Nutini, Jason Mraz, Ben Harper and Al Green. This is Kuba Oms.

It’s about 7:40pm on Thursday November 5th and I’m at The Cellar on Granville st (Vancouver). Down the stairs walks a well dressed Kuba Oms, in a black velvet pinstriped suit, tie, a poppy pinned to his shirt just so, and to complete the outfit- Classic black Converse All-Stars!

It was the fourth artist showcase out of five from the first annual Peak Performance Project (PPP). A project many years in the making, the PPP is a seven year, $5.29 million contest open to emerging artists from British Columbia. Through the combined efforts of 100.5 The PEAK and Music BC, the PPP was created with the intent to help educate, promote and develop local talent through an intensive period of training in all areas of the music business, along with mentorship from music industry professionals.

After weeding through nearly 500 submissions, 20 lucky contestants were selected to attend boot camp for training. Over a period of 6-8 weeks, each contestant has the opportunity to perform in front of family, friends, and a panel of judges. A combination of performance, online voting as well as online marketing and presence, are a few of the ways in which a winner will be chosen. That winner receives $150,000, second and third place receive $75,000 and $50,000.

For further PPP guidelines, rules and eligibility, visit:

http://www.peakperformanceproject.com/?page_id=9

During a time when consumers and labels alike are cutting down on entertainment costs, musicians are finding themselves having to fund their own tours, recordings and promotional campaigns. With Vancouver being a necessary stop for most major tours, I can see how local artists are often overlooked, and entertainment dollars are reserved for the next big concert at GM Place. I am so pleased that the raw talent from B.C. has been given the platform to share their music with a larger audience through the support and financial assistance from a program such as this.

So what does this all mean to me? And why have I taken the time to share this with you?

As a music hungry consumer myself, my ears are always open to discovering new artists, with a particular passion for independent artists of all genres. Five long years finishing a Psych degree while discovering, buying and selling music at HMV, my budding desire to work more closely in the music industry got the better of me. I applied and got accepted to Vancouver Film School’s, Entertainment Business Management program. With just 14 weeks left in my program, I have experienced my own music industry (one year) intensive, complete with classes in Marketing, PR, Broadcasting, Copyright, Contracts & Consulting, Clearances & Releases, Production Management, Financing, Talent Management, the list goes on!

Moving from the east coast of Halifax, NS, over to Vancouver, you would be correct in assuming I am more than content with the endless supply of independent acts visiting (and residing!) in the city, whom I adore. The PPP has given me a quick introduction to the best of the best from B.C. Beginning October 22nd with Sweetheart, Garrett Kato, Tea and We Are the City (I unfortunately missed the first showcase of the series), followed by Familia, Adaline, Run the Red Light and Freeflow on October 29th, I can tell that this will be a tough decision for the judges! Next week I’ll be checking out Bodhi Jones, Adrian Glynn, The Left and Bend Sinister.

Enter Kuba Oms. I had the privilege of meeting Kuba a few short weeks ago. After digging around for all Kuba related info, checking out his video blogs, and snagging myself a free download of his new album, I could clearly see this was someone who has made it a full time job to further his career in music. As musical director of the live house jam band, Velvet (an experimental, vibey, improv unit that crossed into dance/DJ culture), Kuba has been practicing and developing his craft for several years. I’d be a fool not to recognize this artist as someone who has the immediate potential to win over a massive audience and tour the world, with of course, the much needed leverage and financial support the PPP has to offer.

The night of the November 5th showcase, Alexandria Maillot, Ben Sigston and Wassabi Collective also took the stage. The venue was packed by 8:30pm, just 30 minutes before Kuba’s performance. It was a pleasure to finally see Kuba live, and to share the same enthusiasm as the lively audience, who remained engaged, cheered and chanted Kuba’s name for the total endurance of the short, 40-minute set. In that time frame, Kuba sat in the crowd to give an up close and personal performance of “Wherever You Are”, soon followed by a killer rendition of K-OS’s “Man I Used to Be”.

Not all competitions are peachy keen however. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve witnessed friends and fans of the other acts prematurely removing Kuba’s posters and flyers within the venue. It’s disheartening to see, and even as a big Kuba supporter, something I could never do to another artist. Not only has Kuba remained humble, respectful and positive throughout the competition, he makes the trip from Victoria to Vancouver each week to support his fellow friends and Peak performers.

In the meantime, he’s been actively seeking out press and has recently grabbed a feature in the Georgia Straight, Vancouver’s top source for news, arts, entertainment, culture and lifestyle. In addition, he’s had articles featured in The Vancouver Sun, VicNews, and Vancouver is Awesome. Kuba has been interviewed and invited to perform by Global BC Morning News, Omni TV and Urban Rush (to name a few), while his singles have been heard on rotation over 100.5 The Peak and Virgin Radio 95.3.

Recently, Kuba contributed his song “This Heaven” to the film Let it Ride, a documentary honoring late snowboarder, Craig Kelly, which won best film and best soundtrack at Utah’s X-Dance Film Festival in 2007. The 2009 film, Powder Blue, starring Forest Whitaker, Ray Liotta and Jessica Biel features the song, “Never Meant to Hurt You”, which can also be found on Kuba’s debut solo album, How Much Time.

Interest in Kuba does not stop there. Recently, Kuba was sought out to be a spokesperson for World Vision and selected by VANOC as emerging B.C. artist to headline, “100 Days to Go” which took place November 4th at the Whistler Convention Centre.

Kuba will not turn down an opportunity to collaborate, having shared the stage with the mega-talented DJ Sultan, to perform “Jeopardy” at Celebrities Nightclub (Vancouver)- see a clip of it here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xMgfvo5pP4

Another exciting event just a few nights ago saw Kuba playing alongside Juno award winner, Alex Cuba at Element (Victoria).

Today, his performance schedule remains packed. Kuba is booked well into the new year, playing Tuesday nights at The Office Restaurant and Lounge in Victoria, not to mention his regular gig with Velvet every Wednesday night at the legendary Darcy’s Pub (Victoria).

Where Kuba has won major bonus points with me, is that he has enlisted my help as well as a few other keen entertainment business students, allowing us to get a bit more hands on experience, apply what we’ve learned in school and experiment with new promotional techniques. Not only a smart move on his part *wink* but he’s also not shy about sharing his experience, tips and advice with people like myself, who have invested an absurd amount of money to take an entertainment business program. With a punch to my bank account, few volunteer opportunities and aspirations of becoming an active member of the local music community, Kuba shares with us an invaluable opportunity that should not be overlooked!

You know who else he wins points with? My Mom! Who topped off her last email to me with a “PS: Kuba is a cutie”. In all seriousness though, between my contacts throughout Canada, and my fellow volunteer’s connections in China and Greece, we are happy to share Kuba’s music with family, friends and a demographic we know will truly be interested in this undeniable B.C. talent!

If I haven’t convinced you by now to give your vote to Kuba, have a listen for yourself! For the month of November, Kuba’s debut solo album, How Much Time, will be available for free to download. Here is where you can find it: http://kubaoms.com/vote/
