Finally, the fated 6/6/06 has arrived. But what’s to show for it? Where’s Slayer’s LP, intended for today? Alas, still in purgatory (a.k.a. production). Deicide and Entombed also missed deadlines. But have no fear, Beelzebub believers. Artimus Pyledriver and Sikth are repping. As are new grindsters Genghis Tron. There’s the End Records’ black-metal tutorial. And don’t forget the “Omen” soundtrack.

Are you pent up with pentagrams? Not feeling horny for devil’s horns? There’s a heavenly corner as well. Amps for Christ, Combichrist and Evangelicals.

And there’s loads more, of course. Here goes, each in six words:

The Despair Faction Weep With Joy: That would be AFI’s fan club. Sobbing at the arrival of Decemberunderground. It’s the band’s seventh time out. Replete with requisite choruses and bombast. No limited editions or video enhancements. Just 12 doses of strident punk. You’ve already heard “Miss Murder” tirelessly. So check out “37mm” and “Affliction.”

More Crying, Courtesy a Rap Legend: Ice Cube’s Laugh Now, Cry Later. It’s another classic West Coast hoedown. Snoop and WC, all over it. Plus Lil Jon’s helping out, too. Just “Go to Church” for proof. Swizz Beatz and Green Lantern produce. Scott Storch polishes off two tracks. And don’t miss Mike Epps’ spot. Come on, “Holla @ Cha’ Boy.” Make LP #7 worth Cube’s while.

Head Automatica Graduate to Become Sophomores: Daryl Palumbo is at it again. Decadence followed Glassjaw’s hiatus — now this. Fourteen tracks’ worth of power-pop prickliness. “Graduation Day” is all over mtvU. The band is “Laughing at You.” While you’re “Lying Through Your Teeth.” Don’t miss “God” or “Curious,” either.

DJ Khaled Brings the Miami Heat: DJ Khaled’s Listennn … The Album arrives. And it’s presented by Terror Squad. Kanye and Jeezy also on here. Beanie Sigel and Lil Scrappy, too. Plus Clipse, Freeway, Pitbull and CTE. Now that’s called a star-studded LP. It’s devoted to Khaled’s Miami hometown. (“Future of Dade” says it all.)

Paul Oakenfold’s Aged Oak-Barrel Wine Flows: At last, Oakenfold’s A Lively Mind. This one has been bumping forever. But it’s well worth the wait. Pharrell and Grandmaster Flash both appear. Plus “8 Mile”-r Brittany Murphy, incredulously. On “Faster Kill Pussycat,” no less. This is the producer’s second LP. Emphasis on the unquenchable, club-ready beats. Fall Out Boy need new shoes.

The Fort Minor Queen Steps Out: She’s half of “Where’d You Go.” You know, Mike Shinoda’s “TRL” tune. Now, time for Holly Brook proper. Like Blood Like Honey is piano-heavy. Many a heart-wrenching confessional as well. “What I Wouldn’t Give” is ubiquitous. It’s on TV’s “Conviction” and “Related.” Is this 20-year-old ready to break? Will she be the next Dido? Only time will tell, they say.

Some People Just Won’t Say Die:

Cheap Trick’s Rockford
Cracker’s Greenland
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ Sinner
Live’s Songs From Black Mountain
The New Cars’ It’s Alive!
Frank Sinatra Jr.’s That Face!

A Rose by Any Other Name:

Joe Bonamassa (You & Me)
Donavon Frankenreiter (Move by Yourself)
Heideroosjes (Royal to the Bone)
Janez Detd. (Like Cold Rain Kills a Summer Day)
Kraak En Smaak (Boogie Angst)
Shakatak (“Live at the Playhouse” DVD)

They Are Singing the Body Electric:

Amps for Christ (Every Eleven Seconds)
Elevator Action (Society, Secret)
The Robot Ate Me (Good World)
Scanners (Violence Is Golden)
Soft Machine (“New Morning: The Paris Concert” DVD)
Stereo Fuse (All That Remains)

Yeah, They Decided to Take Off:

The Bottle Rockets (Zoysia)
Camera Obscura, as they declare Let’s Get Out of This Country
Jefferson Airplane (The Worst of Jefferson Airplane)
Jet Lag Gemini (Business)
Ladyhawk (Ladyhawk)
Metallic Falcons (Desert Doughnuts)

Are They Rivals in the Making?:

The “Cars” soundtrack vs. the New Cars (It’s Alive!)
Cheap Trick (Rockford) vs. Cheap Sex (Written in Blood)
Jet Lag Gemini (Business) vs. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (Sinner)
Oakenfold (A Lively Mind) vs. Oakley Hall (Gypsum Strings)
Henry Rollins (Sweatbox) vs. Sonny Rollins (The Impulse Story)
Divided by Zero (The Black Sea) vs. Zero 7 (The Garden)

They Need Direction in Their Lives:

Drift (Scott Walker)
Compass (Susanne Abbuehl)
Floating World (Anathallo)
Koast II Koast (Kottonmouth Kings)
The River in Reverse (Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint)
The Search Party Never Came (Vanna)

The Song Title of the Week:

“Hanasakajijii” from Floating World by Anathallo

Six More Notables for Your Consideration:

The Hush Sound’s Like Vines: They opened for Fall Out Boy. Actually, they’re on Pete Wentz’s label. Like Vines is Hush’s second effort. Their first for Wentz’s Decaydance imprint. FOB singer/guitarist Patrick Stump co-produces here. Don’t miss “Magnolia” and “Wine Red.”

Psapp’s The Only Thing I Ever Wanted: Domino Recording Co. is still gold. These Londoners follow Franz Ferdinand’s lead. Except they’re even goofier and quirkier. Their bleeps made it to radio. Go, Carim Clasmann and Galia Durant. Psapp us of all our energy.

Camera Obscura’s Let’s Get Out of This Country: How apropos: this is a sextet. And this is their third release. One album for every other person. “If Looks Could Kill,” they say. On the new LP, that is. Even comes with a free-MP3 coupon.

Amps for Christ’s Every Eleven Seconds: Recorded in L.A.’s San Gabriel Mountains. Unbelievably, this is Amps’ ninth LP. An age-old German standup bass — check. Washboard, autoharp, sitar and electronics — check. Some lyrics about time travel — check. Yup, it’s all right in there.

The Paper Chase’s Now You Are One of Us: Which makes us one of them. It’s subversive racket, through and through. Harrowing pianos about to burst apart. Squawky vocals that make you shudder. If this sounds appetizing, click “buy.”

Mojave 3’s Puzzles Like You: This is Mojave at their poppiest. Neil Halstead gets slightly more accessible. One song by drummer Ian McCutcheon. Glorious pencil artwork adorns the cover. “Breaking the Ice” video is included.

Originally published on MTV.com. (And if you haven’t figured it out yet, every sentence in this piece consists of six words.)

During the stress of finals and school and all the other stuff I’ve got going on right now, this sho

During the stress of finals and school and all the other stuff I’ve got going on right now, this show was exactly what I needed. The Welcome to New England Tour came through Michigan and made its stop in Lansing at Mac’s Bar and I was lucky enough to be in attendance.

First up was Accidents (myspace.com/accidentsmi), a local hardcore band. I came in a little late so I missed the beginning of the set, but was still really impressed by what I saw. The band had a ton of energy and sounded really solid. They were heavily influenced by the greats of their genre, such as American Nightmare, and definitely did a good job of emulating that sound. Accidents were just really happy to just be playing with the bands that they were with, something that is really good to see. Definitely check them out.

Next was another local act, Incarta (myspace.com/incarta). I feel like Incarta gets put on a lot of metal shows in the area and they consistently bring a fairly big crowd, but I feel like the passion just isn’t there. You can definitely tell that Accidents are fans of the music they play while it just feels like Incarta is doing it because it’s cool. This further shows when they choose to cover a song like “Heaven” by DJ Sammy in the middle of their set. I would personally rather see them cover a song that fits more in their genre. Maybe their music just isn’t my taste, but I feel like Incarta just isn’t in it for the right reasons.

A Loss for Words (myspace.com/alossforwords) was the first of the touring bands to play. They are a pop punk band from Boston that is heavily influenced by the Boston hardcore scene. A lot of people think of bands like Every Avenue when they think of pop punk, but AL4W is far from that. They have all the elements and passion of hardcore and fit perfectly on a bill with heavier acts like Vanna and Therefore I Am. Their set was super tight and they flew through it. I really liked the dynamic of shared vocals between the lead singer and bassist and thought they put a really cool spin on their music by combining elements of their various influential genres. Their set got cut a little short, but was still really awesome. Definitely check them out.

Next was Therefore I Am (myspace.com/thereforeiam). They were definitely heavier than AL4W, but still fit the pacing of the bill. I was really impressed by the passion of this band. The vocalist kept talking about how the band and the audience were one unit and how he wanted everyone to be having a good time. The whole band had a ton of energy and was all over the stage while still hitting every note. Their final song absolutely blew me away. The band was having trouble with the microphones and eventually the vocalist just broke down to screaming the words without any mic and letting out all of his energy on the stage. It was really a site to be seen. I was a little unimpressed by this band’s latest album when I gave it a listen, but upon seeing them live, I definitely will be checking them out again.

And finally, Vanna (myspace.com/vanna). There was a lot of hype for this band just in hearing about them and talking to friends and they did not disappoint. They had a very cool dynamic of really heavy parts mixed with very sing-a-long-able vocals. All were very talented musicians who were very into what they were doing and the vocalist really knew how to work the crowd. I don’t think they were my favorite act of the night, but they still definitely impressive. It was just a really solid, tight set.

This tour definitely accomplished what it wanted with the idea of Welcome to New England. I felt like I really got a sense of what the NE hardcore scene is about. Everyone there was singing a long and all the bands were really interactive with the crowd, sometimes jumping into the fray themselves. It was a really cool sense of community to be a part of it.

Finals are draining my brain. I hope this post gives you all a little break from it as well as you make the push till the end of the semester.

-Matt

But I feel that we’re wasting time
Letting go of each other, we’re still holding tight
Are you still holding tight?
I’ll leave my heart there by your bedside
If you swear that your eyes wont stray
To be honest, open, and hoping
To find the words to say
And honestly I only let go for the sake of you

Kaufen!!!

So, nun folgt Band 3.

Die amerikanische Truppe “Vanna”!

A New Hope!!!

Also:Kaufen, Hören, Lieben!!!

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I just got back to Wesleyan and I’ve been trying to get my routine set and I finally have some time to write.

Here is this week’s picks.

#1. “About A Girl” by The Academy Is… off of Fast Times at Barrington High. I really like The Academy Is and I just picked up their two most recent albums (FTABH and Santi) and I’m pretty pleased with them. This song just makes me feel good for some reason. I think it reminds me of myself a little bit or atleast who I used to be, but I’m not entirely sure. —> Download!

#2. “Hold Me Down” by Motion City Soundtrack off of Commit This To Memory. I saw Motion City Soundtrack at Warped Tour back in 2006 and they were wonderful. I sang this song for an audition and I’ve loved it since I heard it. It has always kind of spoke to me. You know, the way some songs just mean a lot to you the second you hear them? Well that’s how this song is for me. —> Download!

#3. “Summersong” by The Decemberists off of The Crane Wife. The Decemberists are the epitome of folk/indie band. I love that their songs always have interesting stories behind them (their new album, The Hazards of Love is one big story). “Summersong” has good instrumentals behind the vocals (which are also wonderful). —> Download!

#4. “Papercuts” by Gym Class Heroes off of The Papercut Chronicles. This is the first song I ever heard by GCH and I really like it. It’s also always kind of made sense to me, I can kind of relate to it. —> Download!

#5. “The Writhing South” by Say Anything off of …Is a Real Boy. Say Anything fantastic as a band. …Is A Real Boy is probably my favorite album from them (though a new one is due for release this year). I think you’ll like this song, even if you don’t necessarily like the South (it has nothing to do with the actual South…that I can grasp atleast). —> Download!

#6. “Public Service Announcement (Interlude)” by Jay-Z off of The Black Album. I know this song is just an interlude, but this is pretty much my favorite track from this album. Jay-Z is my favorite rapper ever. Hands down. No questions asked. —> Download!

#7. “Safe To Say” by Vanna off of A New Hope. I got turned on to Vanna by my girlfriend and I really like them. (I’ve been getting in to a lot of hardcore music lately). Anyway, A New Hope is the best album by them in my opinion. (if you disagree, leave me feedback.) —> Download!

#8 and #9. “Hot Water On Wool” & “Hot Water On Wool (Reprise)” by Dance Gavin Dance off of Dance Gavin Dance. This is one of their better songs and as to not leave you wondering how the song ends, I posted the song AND the reprise. You’re welcome.
Song —> Download!
Reprise —> Download!

#10. “Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis” by Brand New off of Deja Entendu. Brand New is another band that Kelly got me interested in. Deja Entendu is an album I can listen to from start to finish without skipping a track. It’s really pretty grand. —> Download!

Well that’s it for this week. Now that I’m in my rhythm for the semester (hopefully), I’ll try to be writing more faithfully. There should be a lot of new things occuring from now on, so look forward to that.

Cody.

Warped Tour hit Mansfield, MA on July 21, 2009. Now let’s get real here – when over 100

Warped Tour hit Mansfield, MA on July 21, 2009. Now let’s get real here – when over 100 bands and thousands of their fans get together, you know it’s going to be trouble. And trouble in this case typically means a very good time that you absolutely want to get mixed up in.

United Music got the chance to catch up with: The Maine, Hit The Lights, All Time Low, Brokencyde’s Mikl, NOFX, Versa Emerge, A Day To Remember, Underoath, Alexisonfire, Bad Religion, P.O.S, Vanna, and Skate 4 Cancer’s Rob Dyer.

P.O.S was one of the first acts of the day at the Hurley.com stage. Really big on crowd participation, he chose to perform his entire set in the crowd while standing on a box. The crowd really got into the performance, especially when he played “Purexed”. Underoath took the second slot at the Vans Main Stage where the band rocked out to fan favorites in the pouring rain. By the way vocalist Spencer Chamberlain was getting into the music and jumping around in a frenzy onstage, you’d think he hadn’t noticed the nasty weather.

Playing at the Hurley stage, Alexisonfire were expressive, going out of their way to communicate with fans between and during songs throughout their set. They were another band that didn’t let the overcast weather hinder giving a great show to those who had come out. Bad Religion seemed noticeably quiet onstage later with two of their guitarists looking a bit under the weather, yet the band still gave a solid performance. Throughout the set, the crowd at the Vans Main stage had a rowdy energy that didn’t let up for the rest of the day.

Versa Emerge brought a large crowd as Sierra Kusterbeck headbanged her way through songs like “Past Praying For” and commended the crowd for braving the rain. Though having some sound problems in the beginning the rest of the set went off smoothly. Vanna played in the arena at the Hurley.com stage to a large group of rowdy kids who seemed to be having a blast crowd surfing. This however, could be attributed to the set being singer Chris Preece’s last show with the band. All Time Low played their second day of the tour, playing more of the songs from the new record, “Nothing Personal”. These included “Weightless”, “Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don’t)”, and “Lost In Stereo”. However, the highlight of the set was Jack Barakat messing up the intro riffs to “Dear Maria” and Alex Gaskarth encouraging the whole crowd to boo give him the middle finger. Barakat didn’t seem the least bit phased, actually encouraging the heckling upon himself.

During NOFX the tomfoolery at the Vans Main Stage was at an all time high. As the crowd tossed large beach balls and bottles amongst themselves, the band members obnoxiously compared what they were drinking. Hint: the tomfoolery wasn’t just in the crowd! A Day To Remember once again put on a great show despite the rain and cool weather. Illuminated by spotlights on the stage, the set seemed extra put together. A Day To Remember was another one of the bands whose performance wasn’t hindered by the weather.

Skate 4 Cancer is an awareness project meant to educate about cancer prevention, embodying the motto of “The cure is knowledge” and “Dream, love, cure”. S4C was founded by Rob Dyer as a response to losing friends and family to various types of cancer. While promoting at Warped Tour right now, Dyer skates across the occasional continent in an effort to raise awareness about cancer prevention. Dyer is armed with a friendly demeanor, always ready with a smile and to give a hug or two. Attendees should definitely stop at the S4C booth if they have time for a friendly hello and to buy a shirt – after all, they’re affordable at only $5! But even if someone doesn’t buy a shirt, Dyer will probably still give them a hug and a smile.

Warped Tour 2009 offers those who attend a variety of choices of who to see and things to do. At any given time seven bands are playing around the venue, so if you don’t like one of the bands you can just go to another stage to check out what’s going on. You’re not supposed to like every band on the tour, which may just be the beauty and moral of the festival. After all, that’s why bands like Brokencyde and The Millionaires can be performing at the same place as acts like Chiodos and Bad Religion, right?

Vanna

Looking oddly tough in her wife beater and a pair of her husband’s checked boxer shorts, Van comes to sit beside me on her sofa. “Dinner” she announces, and then pauses. “Now let me think”.

She glances over at the armoury of cookbooks sitting unassumingly on her coffee table and heaves them onto her lap. “How do I make mushrooms?” she muses to herself as she flips through them one by one. “Butter, garlic and fry ‘em in a pan?” I offer but she waves away this suggestion impatiently in her search for the perfect recipe.

I settle back meekly on the sofa and look on in amazement at this tiny girl’s energy. After a long, hard day at work all I want to do is kick off my clothes and shoes and collapse on the sofa for a good hour or two with milk and biscuits. Van, though, gets right to work, starting with her twilight brainstorming session on the couch as she decides what to cook for dinner each night.

I usually judge people’s ages against how old they seem compared to me. Tellingly, I have a tendency to think almost everyone is older than I am, but Van is a conundrum in this sense. Her tiny stature, unflagging optimism and ability to keep up a steady stream of chatter no matter what she is doing makes me sometimes feel older and thus very protective of her. Still, her endearing naïveté is offset by the fact that she is oddly street smart. I say ‘oddly’ because she is literally so tiny that one just assumes that she would get pushed around. But Van will have none of it. I commented on this to her one day. “Good things come in small packages” she replied with a big grin.

I hear a triumphant “Ah!” which signals to me that Van has chosen her mushroom recipe for the night. Caught up with inspiration, she hugs the cookbook to her and scurries to the kitchen to get started. I get up and follow her, shaking my head with an almost envious admiration. When I see Van at home like this, running a household on her own, taking care of her husband and readying herself emotionally and financially for the possibility of a child next year, she seems years older than me. In reality, we are the same age.

Still, there are momentary lapses:

One morning, when she was feeling particularly cheeky and had no one to take it out on, she ran to stand over her sleeping husband. “Dhanushakaaaaaa…” she crooned squeakily, ruffling his hair without remorse as she tried to annoy him out of sleep. Fortunately, because he only got home at 2.30 am after the graveyard shift at work, and possibly also because he’s used to her antics, Dhanushka slept on, undisturbed.

I usually have to coax her away from her husband, telling her it’s time to leave for work and then she’s all business again, shepherding me out the door and taking me on the shorter route towards the bus stand. Unused to bussing it to work, I am always slightly jumpy during this leg of the journey. Van knows this and is prepared to wait longer for a bus that is not hideously crowded so that we can travel in relative comfort. I breathe a sigh of relief every time when one of these come along and follow her gratefully up the steps and sit beside her, clutching my bags to my chest. She drowns out my nervousness with her chatter and soon I forget what I was stressing about so much.

At work, she is my pint-sized ally, always around to assist if I need it, ready to admit her failings and learn from someone who might be able to help. We work well together, she and I, because we can ask each other for help without feeling inadequate in some way, and because we respect what the other is good at. If I am good at writing, she is excellent at putting things in order so that when I settle down to write, I build on what she’s already put there.

Back at home, the two of us are housemates till her husband comes home late at night. And it works well. We are a funny mix, but we go together. When there’s a cockroach lurking about the place, I am a wreck, running helter skelter in all directions to avoid it, even when it’s no where near me. She calmly gets the baygon and sprays it within an inch of its life and gets rid of it for me. But when it’s a spider that’s doing the lurking, she runs behind the protective covering of her door and peeks out to watch with a sort of morbid fascination as I sweep it out into the garden (having solicited my boyfriend’s help to kill it first).

Van took me in at a moment’s notice when I literally had nowhere else to go. I have lived with her a full week now, and already know that my first 7 days out in the real world would have been impossible if not for my small but darling friend. As I write this, I try and think of anyone else I know who is so willingly giving of her time and space – and nutella! I remember coming to her house to visit some time ago and finishing her jarful of nutella in two sittings. When I apologised shamefacedly she cheerfully replied that it was just sitting around going to waste (when it was obviously not). Note to self: Replenish Vanna’s nutella.

It’s 8 am and she’s fast asleep still, exhausted after a busy weekend. I woke her up half and hour ago but when she grumbled and hid herself under the sheet next to her husband, I didn’t have the heart to force her to get up. I’ll try again now.

Van, if you read this, you are the maddest, cutest housemate a girl could ever ask for. Thank you for your incredible generosity towards me – something I will never be able to fully repay. This post is a (rather inadequate) tribute to you: you may be tiny but your heart is one of the biggest I’ve ever come across. I love you.

Sturm Graz – Siroki Brijeg 2 – 1

Legia Varsovia – FC Olimpi Rustavi 3 – 0

NK Rudar Velenje – Estrella Roja 0 – 1

Brondby IF – Flora Tallin 0 – 1

NAC Breda – Gandzasar Kapan 6 – 0

In honesty. Honestly. I only let go for the sake of you.
