One of the reasons I changed the blog theme was to be able to write a bit more in depth about certain games I own. One of these games is Diablo II. Diablo II is in my opinion as close to a perfect game as you can get. Alongside Half-Life 2, Red Alert 2 and some others it’s a game that offers you the most amount of fun with the least amount of frustration. It’s also addicting as hell.

It’s also an old game. It was released in 2000 and it’s expansion (Lord of Destruction) was released in 2001 so it’s about 10 years old. It’s safe to say I’ve played this game to death and have had the occasional Diablo burnout. One of the ways I’ve tried to make this 10 year old game more interesting is through variant play. Variants are character builds that are somewhat restricted in all sorts of odd ways in an attempt to up the challenge or spice up the game. I first learned about this type of play when I stumbled upon Sirian’s Diablo II page and then clicked through to Sullla’s (with three l’s) page. The type of variants they played just seemed so cool and their write-ups were amazing. So I’m going to try my hand at it. Initially I’ll restrict myself to Diablo II, but I hope to expand this to other games as well. Variant play, I find, can be adapted to almost any type of game and almost always ups the fun factor.

For now though the game of choice is Diablo II (currently at version 1.12 with 1.13 in the making). I thought I’d try my hand at completing the game, full clear style (all enemies killed and all quests completed) with a No-Teleport Sorceress specializing in Hydra and Thunderstorm. After reading Jaffa Tamarin’s experience with one, it seemed like a fun character to try. Also there’s the fact that although I’ve played a lot of this game, I’ve never actually completed Hell difficulty. A few years ago, when I played on realms back in the 1.09 days I got a Frozen Orb Sorceress halfway through Act 2 of Hell, but that was about the time when online play (with strangers anyway) really didn’t appeal to me anymore. So in some way this would also be a journey into the unknown.

Her skills will be Hydra and Thunderstorm, with max points into Lightning Mastery and Fire Mastery. Extra points will go into Warmth and if I were to max her main skills at some point I’ll start pumping one the synergy skills for Hydra (probably Firebolt).

Itemwise she has a few restrictions as well. As far as boots, belts and gloves go: no metal of any kind, she’s a mage not a warrior. Leathers will have to do. For headgear she’ll wear circlets, and will be prohibited to wear anything else until she obtains one. She’ll use a staff and is forbidden to use an orb/shield combo. Since defense is practically useless for a Sorceress I’ve based her choice of armor purely on aesthetics. She’ll wear scale mail. Looks don’t count for much in single player but still you’d be amazed at how many items in how many games I’ve passed up just to get the ‘look’ of my character right. Jewelry is unrestricted. Statswise she’ll invest just enough in Energy and Strength to get by, invest nothing in Dexterity and will put as much as she can in Vitality

Her name will be Dulcea (points if you know where I got the name from). Any updates on her travels will appear on the front page of the blog as well as in the Games I’ve Played section. If anything mentioned above seems like gibberish to anyone, don’t worry, I’ll be linking heavily to the Arreat Summit.

Here’s hoping I have the discipline to keep playing and keep updating.

Now here’s a curiosity.

Win32/Zimuse is a worm that exists in two variants, innovatively entitled Win32/Zimuse.A and Win32/Zimuse.B. In some ways it’s a throwback to an earlier age, since it overwrites the Master Boot Record on drives attached to an infected system with its own data, so that data on the system becomes inaccessible without the use of specialized software. Our colleagues in Bratislava have pointed to a certain similarity with an old multipartite file and boot infector called One Half (hence the sly reference in the title of this blog). However, it doesn’t work like a traditional boot sector infector, using code in the MBR to infect floppy disks: it spreads either on exchangeable media such as USB devices, or is found embedded on legitimate web sites as a self-extracting .ZIP file or as an IQ test program.

We believe that it originated as a prank in central Slovakia (no, our lab guys didn’t write it!) but it’s spread from there has been slightly surprising, if not dramatic: right now, the greatest number of infected computers is in the US. Clearly, USB devices remain a significant vector for rapid malware dissemination.

Win32/Zimuse.A starts spreading by USB 10 days after infection, and the destructive routine is executed in 40 days. The .B variant raises the ante by reducing the time before spreading to seven days, and the time to execution of the destructive payload.

Hopefully this won’t spread too much further. But it’s a useful reminder that while most current threats are more interested in stealing your data than trashing it, it’s never a bad time to make sure your backup mechanisms are working properly. You do back up your data, don’t you?

A paper has recently appeared in PLoS Currents describing the evolution of the pandemic H1N1 virus. It was written by Martha Nelson, David Spiro and David Wentworth. Samples were collected in New York and Wisconsin and sequenced at the J. Craig Venter Institute.  The dataset included these sequences as well as the pandemic H1N1 sequences which have been deposited in GenBank. Sequences from GISAID were not included, presumably due to their restrictive policies on data analysis.

Influenza viruses mutate frequently. Despite some erroneous press reports, this applies to pandemic H1N1 just as much, if not more, than seasonal flu. In the PLoS paper, statistical techniques were applied to the sequence dataset described above to separate out the various pandemic flu isolates into 7 distinct groups called clades. The sequences contained within each clade are more closely related to each other than to the other clades. However, they are not necessarily identical. The paper describes the relationships between the different clades and outlines their geographical distribution.

One of the most striking results from this paper was that although six of the seven clades were found in multiple regions throughout the world, in the two areas that were extensively sampled, New York and Wisconsin, there was a clear founder effect. In other words, most of the people in each area were infected with the descendants of specific strains of virus. Most people in Wisconsin were infected with a different variant of the virus than most people in New York were infected with.

Although the authors of the PLoS Currents paper did not demonstrate any obviously functionally important changes in pandemic H1N1, they did clearly show that the virus is mutating and diversifying as it spreads. Further, they found that regionally distinct clades are evolving in different geographical areas. Since the sort of intensive sampling and sequencing conducted for this paper is rarely done, we can only guess at how the virus is evolving in thousands of regions around the world.

Although the WHO and the CDC frequently suggest that the pandemic H1N1 virus is an homogeneous entity, the reality is quite different. The virus is opening many different doors, simultaneously. We don’t know what the odds are that one of these doors will lead to higher virulence or Tamiflu resistance. But what we do know is that it will keep opening door after door, in city after city, month after month in a never ending search for optimal fitness.

Today’s new Jagex update is the “Champions’ Challenge Update and Hairstyles“. I really don’t get the Champions’ Challenge because I haven’t been there yet, reason being that I am busy runecrafting. The cool part about the update is the new hairstyles.

Also, worlds 113 (f2p) and 114 (p2p) have been changed to “skill total” worlds. To enter one of these worlds, one must have a total level of 1000. I don’t see the point of this update but that is what Jagex have decided to do. Useless updates.. and Falador has FINALLY got an altar! Pretty good update.

Anyhow, while I would runecraft, I would always have my little greyhound following me everywhere (never picked him up). Today, he just disappeared. Have fed him raw beef every trip.

Precis som det spekulerats i om HIV kanske är utvecklat av människan för att “lösa många problem” här i världen, så måste jag faktiskt säga att den tanken slår mig även i den rådande pandemin, men med ett annat syfte.

Fågelsjuka, monkeypox, galna kosjukan.. Denna gången är det muslimernas goda vänner, svinen, som får äran att ge namn åt sjukdomen.

Pengar styr världen. Det är numer ett faktum.

“VACCINERA ER!” uppmanas det från många håll.

Vilka är det som tjänar pengar på vaccinet? Läkemedelsföretagen.
Vilka gick det inte så bra för under finanskrisen? Läkemedelsföretagen.
Vilka är det som skulle kunna tänkas göra något för att börja tjäna pengar igen? Läkemedelsföretagen.
Vilka tjänade ännu mer pengar efter den lilla “truckolyckan” när vaccinet var på väg till Norge, så att det fick beställas ännu mer? De samma läkemedelsföretagen som nu säljer så mycket att det blir tomt på lagren runtom. Snacka om försäljningssuccé!
Vilka myndigheter har gått ut med att det ska rapporteras så lite som möjligt om ev. vaccin-biverkningar? De norska.

Är det bara jag som ser ett mönster?

Vi har snart inget val längre, vi vaccinerar oss hejvilt, bara för att vi har läst/hört att vi ska göra det i media och från våra kära myndigheter som vi blint litar på. Kan det vara som så att läkemedelsföretagen i maskopi med myndigheterna, tjänar pengar på något som egentligen inte behövs? Influensa kommer årligen! Läkarna säger själva att den här varianten inte är så mycket värre än de andra, och man får uppmaningen att stanna hemma och vila om man känner sig sjuk. Det var det vi fick höra den första perioden iallafall. Nu verkar det som att några ser intjäningspotentialen i det hela. Vi andra ser ingenting?

Dödsfall är rapporterade både bland de som är vaccinerade och de som inte är det. Kanske det är som så att de som vaccinerades skulle ha dött ändå? Kanske är vaccinet inte verksamt mot just den här varianten? Kanske innehåller vaccinet ett övervakningschip? Kanske är vaccinet bara skadligt för din kropp? Många “kansken”.. men valet om du ska vaccinera dig eller inte, är DITT!

Kanske var det några “evil professors” som ville sätta fart på industrin.

Kanske är det en helt naturlig mutation av viruset som har uppstått, som vi kan tacka Gud/Moder jord/kalla-det-vad-man-vill för? Ja isåfall är det kanske bara en naturlig rensning i vår redan överpopulerade värld som sker. “The survival of the fittest“. De svaga kanske inte klarar det. Men då är det naturligt. Det som är onaturligt är att skrämma alla (skrämseltaktik har fungerat inom många olika religioner/ideologier sedan urminnes tider) och nästan “tvinga” dem att tillföra kroppen något som inte är helt beprövat eller säkert. Jag kan med handen på hjärtat säga dig kära läsare:
ALLA KOMMER INTE ATT DÖ (av H1N1)!

L’alcalde anuncia que reprendrà les negociacions amb Foment perquè el “impacte siga mínim” en la localitat

L’Audiència Nacional ha desestimat el recurs presentat per l’Ajuntament d’Altea contra la variant que afecta al municipi i que promou el Ministeri de Foment. Davant aquesta situació, l’alcalde, Andrés Ripoll, ha informat que es reprendran les negociacions amb Foment per a “assolir la solució menys agressiva per a Altea”. En aquest sentit, el primer edil ha afirmat que pretén que l’impacte per al municipi “siga mínim” pel que sol·licita que “l’afecció es reduïsca de 100 a 25 metres; que la rotonda d’entrada i eixida de la variant estiguen situades damunt o sota ella perquè ocupe el menor terrè possible; estiga el més pròxima possible a l’autopista i que quede el mínim terreny mort possible entre ambdues infraestructures; i aconseguir que els valors previstos d’expropiació siguen acceptables per als ciutadans afectats”.

El recurs contenciós administratiu es va interposar en 2007 contra la resolució que aprovava definitivament l’estudi informatiu de la variant. L’alcalde ha recordat que el consistori plantejava que “l’estudi emmalaltia d’una exposició de les circumstàncies que justificaren la declaració d’interès general de les carreteres i la concepció global del seu traçat” així com que “es considerava insuficient el contingut de l’Estudi d’Impacte Ambiental”. Referent a això, Ripoll ha explicat que es va al·legar que “l’estudi informatiu no havia tingut en compte la variació de les circumstàncies socioeconòmiques produïdes en la comarca després de quasi vint anys i que es tractava d’un estudi sense alternatives i que no donava resposta al problema de congestió del tràfic a Altea”. Davant aquesta situació, el primer edil ha remarcat que l’Ajuntament va proposar una solució “menys agressiva” per al territori i “més barata” i que consistia en l’ampliació de l’AP-7 amb un nou carril en cada sentit i amb un accés a mitjan recorregut que permetera la connexió amb el centre d’Altea i Alfas del Pí. En aquest punt, l’Audiència Nacional no comparteix les al·legacions del consistori ja que considera que s’ha seguit el procediment legalment establit i que Foment ha respost a les al·legacions plantejades “valorant-les raonablement i després de l’oportú tràmit d’informació pública tenint en compte l’evolució i perspectives de futur del tràfic rodat”.

Respecte a l’al·legació de l’Ajuntament sobre l’Estudi d’Impacte Ambiental, l’alcalde ha assenyalat que “presentava manques” com “l’absència d’estudi de paisatge que permetera l’avaluació del mateix, no arreplegava el llistat de jaciments arqueològics del Molí de Benimusa ni el Molí Vell, tampoc l’entramat de les infraestructures hidràuliques de Benimusa i Mandem, no existeixen referències a la possible afecció del cridat pi de Picó, no es tracta amb suficient detall l’afecció que durant l’execució de les obres es puga generar sobre la vegetació de la ribera de la llera del riu Algar i tampoc es justifica l’impacte que es generarà en la zona de l’ermita de Santa Bàrbara”. Sobre aquest punt, la sala del contenciós administratiu aclareix que “la Declaració d’Impacte Ambiental ha efectuat un examen detallat de l’actuació, s’han tingut en compte les al·legacions més importants i han estat valorats els aspectes essencials del projecte”. A més, s’informa que s’incorpora “un programa de vigilància ambiental per al seguiment i control dels impactes detectats, així com per a l’eficàcia de les mesures correctores i protectores establides”. Així, segons el parer de l’Audiència Nacional, Foment ha complit amb la tramitació legalment prevista i desestima el recurs de l’Ajuntament contra la resolució que aprova l’expedient d’Informació Pública i l’Estudi Informatiu de la variant i la considera “ajustada a dret”.

Passing data as a hash over the DBus interface is a very flexible, easy and extensible way to interact with other programs.
When looking for examples online my google-fu did not yield any result. Many DBus howtos and GTK documents just end before it gets really interesting.

I wasted more time on searching for documents than on experimenting and figuring it out myself. To make it easier for everyone after me, here a short description.

The examples are taken from a code I am writing for seahorse. I removed some parts not relevant for the examples to guide you to the interesting stuff..

O VW Polo lançado recentemente na Europa deve crescer e ganhar uma perua. O nome será Polo Variant. A projeção foi feita pela revista Auto Hoje, de Portugal.

As linhas do carro poderão  influenciar a nossa Spacefox. Uma vez que a frente do Fox remodelado, que chega no final deste mês, terá influências da versão hatch do Polo.

Já a versão sedã do novo Polo será fabricada no México e pode chegar mais tarde até o Brasil. Além disso, a VW prepara uma versão apimentada no Polo europeu, que será chamada de GTI.

Aaron Horkey 'Bon Iver' Regular Edition of 150 Size: 10.5 x 23.5 Inches $60 Each

I am honored and humbled to bring you news about our newest release. Aaron Horkey’s ‘Bon Iver’ poster is a 10.5 x 23.5 inch screenprint on french speckletone madero beach paper. It was masterfully produced by D&L Screenprinting, which is new for Aaron Horkey. It has an edition of 150 (though not the full edition will be made available online) and will be priced at $60. Aaron has taken the time to apply a one-color gocco print by hand to each print, effectively canceling the stamp in the imagery. He has also embossed each copy with a small osprey.  These will be made available on Wednesday, October 14th at 3pm EST. Barring any unforeseen problems, this should be a quick and smooth one.
