I recently read Niscala Devi Dasi’s book, “Varnasharma – The Eight Petalled Lotus Divinity in All, Diversity in One”.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and felt that Niscala Prabhu brought up several intelligent, important points.

I appreciated her emphasis on guna, qualities, as opposed to karma, work, in finding out one’s true varna. In other words, Niscala Prabhu points out that it’s more important, in deciding which varna one belongs to, to first see what qualities one naturally expresses, not just the work one is good at doing. For example, a person can be a great teacher, an intelligent academic, but has no regard for the well-being of others, or is full of pride and envy. The result might be a person good at teaching hateful ideas, or a brilliant scientist who creates a weapon of mass destruction.  Such a person should not be considered a brahmana.

I also appreciated her emphasis on how natural a true varnashrama system must be – where people will, by definition, be situated in the level of spiritual commitment and a certain kind practical work which most satisfies them, neither leaving them hankering for other service or work opportunities, nor setting them up for a spiritual/administrative falldown. (I like her term, “the hypocrisy of falling up”, in reference to trying to put oneself in a spiritual/administrative/social position superior to one’s actual nature).

Another point I found interesting is her suggestion that there be vows specific to one’s ashram. We all know how easy it is to make great and powerful vows of renunciation and austerity in our early years of spiritual life (brahmacari), only to find them impossible or a great burden to follow in the grihastha ashram, especially for those who were not, as they might have thought, in the brahmana varna. She suggests a model whereby everyone can find his or her place in Krishna consciousness, according to his varna and ashram. Not that those who cannot follow the strict code of conduct and vows of a brahmana should feel excluded, fallen, or in any way, a lesser person. She reminds the reader, time and time again, that Krishna set up the varnashrama system in such a way that everyone can achieve perfection in this lifetime.

Another very useful point she brings up is the great danger of pratistha – the desire for fame and power, the desire to feel superior to other people and to exploit them. She makes the case that the system of varnashrama exists precisely to combat this terrible tendency of mundane consciousness, because the system values each and every person, varna and ashram – they are all important and necessary.

This leads her to point out the very present danger we all face (and generally ignore) that our religious or devotional service is motivated by subconscious envy, greed, lust, desire for fame, power, etc. She reminds us that if such motivations remain in our subconscious, they will be fed by the process of devotional service, not eliminated by it. These are the weeds of bhakti that Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu alluded to. On the other hand, conscious material desires are gradually diminished and dealt with in the process of bhakti.

The book could use a very thorough re-write, to better organize her excellent insights and correct the many editing mistakes. It also needs more professional layout work, both on the cover and main text. But these are superficial problems that do not significantly decrease the value in reading this book, which I thoroughly recommend.

Описание ройона

Вряд ли нужно долго описывать КК”Золотые пески“. Этот современный курорт, сочетавший 50летнюю традицию и историю с современными тенденциями – небезизвестен в России. Он расположен в 18км от г.Варны среди природного парка Золотые пески, объявленного в 1943 году защищенной зоной. Расположение у моря, мягкий климат /зима мягкая, а лето не так жаркое из-за прохладного морского ветерка – бриз/ отличают его от других национальных парков. Здес пахнет и морем, и лесом, что действует укрепляюще на здоровье. Среди лиственных /с хвойными/ лесов разброшены гостиницы. Из-под тени, иногда вековых деревьев, сквозь зелень и пестроту цветов Вы сможете наслаждаться лазурным морем. А журчание фонтанов успокаивает и заряжает энергией.

Комплекс Аквамарин расположен у гостиниц “Одессос”, “Амбасадор” и “Шипка”. Он находится в 150м от пляжа. Пляж широккй, с мелким золотистым песком, с барами, зонтами и шезлонгами, что делает его один из самых хороших и желанных в Европе.

Voici donc comme convenu la photo de Marion BRENNE, collégienne du collège Guy Mollet de Lomme, et qui a été sélectionnée dans le cadre d’un concours photos européen. De quoi s’agit-il ? Le Département du Nord a organisé, courant 2009, ce concours sur le thème « Mon idée des frontières en Europe » (concours lancé dans le cadre de lille3000 « Europe XXL »). Les lauréats sélectionnés dans le Nord et chez les autres participants (Voïvodie de Lodz en Pologne, Municipalité de Varna en Bulgarie, Judet de Suceava en Roumanie, Département de Baranya en Hongrie) ont permis de monter l’exposition photos « Mon idée des frontières en Europe ». Le règlement du concours prévoyait que les lauréats français gagneraient un séjour chez un des partenaires organisateurs. En accord avec Varna, et compte tenu des autres déplacements prévus en 2009, le Département a souhaité organiser ce séjour à Varna. Avec l’accord de M. Kiril YORDANOV, Maire de Varna, celui-ci a eu lieu du 25 au 29 octobre 2009, afin de coupler l’accueil de la délégation du Nord avec le vernissage de l’expo photos sur place. La photo de Marion est pour moi particulièrement rassurante et pleine d’espoir. Elle tend à prouver, en effet, que l’Europe qui se construit dans la tête de nos jeunes collégien(ne)s est tout sauf fermée sur elle même… Aussi belle symboliquement qu’esthétiquement, elle parle d’ouverture, de partage, de projets, de fraternité et de dépassement. Bravo Marion.

Mais le déplacement à Varna nous a aussi permis de rencontrer les autorités locales et de travailler à l’approfondissement de plusieurs actions, et notamment les projets « Mieux vieillir en Europe : regards croisés de collectivités locales » et  ”renforcement institutionnel et action sociale ». L’occasion d’échanger sur les thématiques communes qui nous lient et de mettre en place un protocole d’échange d’expériences de de pratiques. L’occasion surtout de faire vivre concrètement une Europe dont le destin de chaque membre est désormais commun à celui des autres. Nous avons aussi planifié la possibilité d’échanges culturels, et d’actions dans le domaine de la jeunesse. Enfin Varna envisage sérieusement de se porter candidate pour être Capitale européenne de la culture en 2019. Inutile de dire que notre expérience dans ce domaine suscite une curiosité évidente.

Bulgaria. Varna. What a beauty. July 2009

Osmanlı padişahlarının en büyüklerinden biri olan İkinci Murat, 12 Temmuz 1444′te Macarlar’la yaptığı barış antlaşması ile Osmanlı tarihindeki ikinci mağlûbiyeti kabul ediyor ve 1437′den beri Haçlılarla sürüp gitmekte olan savaş faslını kapayarak kendi isteği ile padişahlıktan çekiliyordu. Hiç şüphesiz, Ankara bozgunluğunun bile sarsamadığı Osmanlı Türkleri’ni Jan Hunyad’ın birkaç zaferi yıkamazdı. Fakat Macar, Leh, Alman, Romen ve Hırvat orduları ile yedi yıldır yapılan boğuşma, devleti de, Sultan Murat’ı da yormuştu. Osmanlı hanedanı içinde ilk şair olan tedbirli, kahraman, ulu himmetli ve temiz yürekli İkinci Murat ruhunun aradığı sükûnu yeşillikler ve sessizlikler arasında bulmak için Manisa’ya çekiliyor ve tahtını da 13 yaşındaki oğluna, yarının İstanbul fatihine bırakıyordu.

Osmanlı tahtına tecrübesiz bir çocuğun gelişi mutaassıp Haçlılar muhitinde bir ümit ve istek doğurdu. Bu fırsattan istifade ederek Türkler’i Avrupa’dan atmak kuruntusu gönüllerine yerleşti. Barış imzalanalı on gün olmuştu, İncil üzeri yemin ederek verdikleri sözü nasıl bozacaklarını düşünüyorlardı. Papanın vekili “başka dine men sup olanlarla yapılan yeminin hükmü yoktur” diye fetva verdi ve derhal harp hazırlığı başladı.

Haçlı ordusunun çekirdeğini seçme ve çelik zırhlı Macar atlıları teşkil ediyordu. Buna Almanlar, Lehliler, Romenler, Hırvatlar da katılmışlardı. Macaristan kralı orduda bulunduğu halde başkumandanlık meşhur Jan Hunyad’a verilmiş ve ordu 20 Eylülde Orsuva’ya gelip Tuna’yı geçmişti. Fakat büyük maksatla ve ümitlerle yola çıkan bu ordu, kararlaştırdığı sevkulceyş harekâtını muvaffakiyetle tatbik edemiyor, ağır hareket ediyordu. Macar kralının 250 arabaya yükletilen ağırlıkları ve ordunun diğer lüzumsuz eşyası bu ordunun yürüyüşünü geciktiriyor ve Türkler’e vakit kazandırıyordu. Haçlı ordusu 26 Eylülde Vidin’e yetişti. Orsuva ile Vidin arasındaki 110 kilometre beş günde alınmıştı. Demek ki günde ancak 22 kilometre yürünüyordu. Halbuki bu sırada Türkler Anadolu’dan bunun iki misli çabuklukla yürüyüş yaparak düşmanlarını karşılamağa koşuyorlardı.

Vidin önüne gelen düşman birkaç gün taarruz ettiyse de şehri alamadı. Oran’dan Rabova’ya gelindi. Türkler şehri boşaltmışlardı. Haçlılar boş şehre girdiler.

6 ilk teşrinde Niğbolu’ya gelen Haçlılar Firuz Bey oğlu Mehmet Bey kumandasındaki Türk garnizonu tarafından durduruldu. Haçlılar şehri alamadılar; burada da boşuna zayiat verdiler.

Haçlı ordusu geçtiği yerleri yakıp yıkarak Razgrad’a, oradan da müstahkem bir şehir olan Yenipazar’a geldi. Burasını savaşla alıp içindekileri kılıçtan geçirdiler.

24 ilkteşrinde Şumnu, Varna, Petriç, Kavarna şehirlerine beyannameler gönderilerek teslim oldukları taktirde serbest bırakılacakları, aksi takdirde kılıçtan geçirilecekleri bildirildi. Fakat bütün şehirler teslim teklifini reddettiler.

26 ilkteşrinde Haçlılar Şumnu’ya taarruz etti. Türkler şiddetle karşı koydularsa da yenildiler. Son dakikaya kadar müdafaa eden 50 kişi hiçbir çare kalmadığını görünce esir düşmektense ölmeği tercih ederek kendilerini burçlardan aşağı attılar.

Haçlılar Şumnu’da beş gün kalarak vakit kaybettiler. 4 ikinci teşrinde Prevadi’ye geldiler. Burasını da güçlükle alarak tahrip ettiler.

6 ikinci teşrinde Petriç kasabasını da epey zayiat vererek alıp içindeki Türkleri kılıçtan geçirdiler.

9 ikinci teşrinde Varna’nın önüne geldiler. Akşam karanlığı basarken Türk ordusunun, kendi gerilerinde toplu bir halde bulunduğunu gören Haçlılar şaşırdılar. Aşağı yukarı 4 kilometre mesafede Türk ordugâhı kurulmuş ve Türk ordusunun ateşleri yanmağa başlamıştı.

Bu nasıl böyle olmuştu? Tahttan çekilip Manisa’ya giden İkinci Murat hangi sihirle ordusunun başında olarak gerilerine düşmüştü?

Haçlıların antlaşmayı bozarak yürüyüşe hazırlandıkları öğrenilince Türk devlet adamları tehlikeyi sezmişler ve çocuk padişaha işi zarifane bir şekilde anlatarak babasını tahta çağırmasını teklif edip bunu ikinci Mehmet’e kabul ettirmişlerdi. Fakat Sultan Murat bu teklife ret cevabı vermiş, bunun üzerine istikbalin İstanbul Fatih’i, tarihte pek tanınmış olan “padişahsanız ordunuzun başına geçin, padişahsam ordunuzun başına geçmenizi emrediyorum.” mealindeki mektupla İkinci Murat’ı tekrar padişahlığı ele almağa mecbur etmişti. Ordusunun yenilmesinden ve büyük oğlu Alâeddîn’in ölümünden doğan acı ile dinlenmek için çekildiği Manisa’da beklediğini bulamayan ikinci Murat büyük bir çabuklukla ordusunu toplayıp hızla yürüdü. Gelibolu hizalarından Kümeliye geçecekti. Fakat Haçlı donanmasının Gelibolu önünde beklediğini öğrenince büyük bir karar çabukluğu ile doğuya yöneldi ve İstanbul Boğazı’na doğru ilerledi. Balıkesir-Bursa-Gemlik üzerinde yapılan bu cebrî yürüyüş tamamı ile muvaffak olmuş bir hareketti. Gayet gizli olarak yapılmış, Gelibolu önünde bekleyen düşman donanması aldatılarak yerinde bırakılmıştı. Bu donanma boş yere Türk ordusunu Çanakkale Boğazı’nda bekliyordu.

Türk ordusu Anadolu Hisarı önünden, İtalyan gemileri ile Kümeliye geçti. 40.000 kişi olan Türk ordusu er başına bir duka altını isteyen İtalyanlar’a bu parayı vererek Rumeli’ye geçmiş ve hızla Edirne’ye yürümüştü.

Edirne’ye ilkteşrîn ortalarında varıldı. Bu sırada düşman boşuna Niğbolu’yu sarmakla vakit geçiriyordu. Türk ordusu Edirne-Filibe-Şıpka-Tırnova yolu ile Niğbolu’ya vardığı sırada düşman oradan çekilmiş, Şumnu’ya doğru gitmişti. Niğbolu’daki Türk kuvvetleri de orduya katıldı. Doğuya doğru ilerlendi. Haçlılar, Türk ordusunun kendi artlarında olduğunu bilmiyorlar, bu toprakları iyi tanıyan Türkler ise kendilerini saklamak suretiyle yıldırım gibi ilerleyerek düşmana yaklaşıyorlardı.

9 ikinci teşrinde Haçlılara yetişmişlerdi, iki ordu ters cephe ile çarpışacaklardı. Çünkü Haçlılar arkalarını Varna’ya vererek Batı Şimal’e doğru cephe almışlar, Türkler ise cepheyi Cenup Doğu’ya doğru tutmuşlardı.

Macar kralı, Türk ordusunun dört kilometre uzakta olduğunu öğrenince atların eğerlerinin çıkarılmadan gecelenmesini emretti. Manevî kuvvetleri mükemmeldi. Macarların üstünlüğü zırhlı süvarilerden mürekkep olmalarında idi. Başkumandanları Jan Hunyad, Türklere karşı birkaç zafer kazanmış büyük bir kumandandı, iki tarafta da top vardı.

Türk ordusu Anadolu’dan 40.000 kişiyle Kümeliye geçmiş, burada da bazı kuvvetler kendisine eklenmişti. Edirne’de bir miktar asker bıraktıkları için 50.000 kişiden çok değildiler. Haçlılar ise 70.000 kadardı. Yanlış bir düşünce ile bazı Türk kaleleri önünde boşuna oyalanıp zayiat vermeselerdi Türk ordusuna göre daha üstün bir durumda bulunacaklardı.

10 ikinci teşrin 1444′te savaş başladı. Türkler, Haçlıların bozdukları antlaşmayı bir kargıya geçirerek karargâha dikmişlerdi. Türk ordusunun sağ kanadında Turhan Bey buyruğundaki Kümeli sipahileri, ortada Karaca Paşa buyruğundaki Anadolu sipahileri bulunuyordu. Sol kanatta akıncılarla hafif piyadeler olan azaplar vardı. Başkumandan olan İkinci Murat, kapıkulları yani yeniçeri ve kapıkulu sipahisi ile ihtiyatta bulunuyordu.

Ters cephe ile yapılan savaşta iki taraftan birinin mahvolacağı tabiî idi. Bu neticeyi katî’leştiren sebeplerden birisi de iki tarafın azmindeki şiddet ve kumandanlarındaki ustalıkla askerlerindeki kahramanlıktı.

Taarruza Türkler başladı. Türkler’in sol kanadındaki 10.000 azap ve akıncı düşman sağ kanadına, onu çevirecek şekilde, yaklaştılar. Azaplar düşmanı ok yağmuruna tuttuktan sonra akıncılar düşmana doğru saldırdılar. Aynı zamanda Anadolu Beylerbeyi Karaca Paşa da Anadolu sipahileriyle düşmana şiddetle taarruza geçti. Düşman, azap ve akıncıların yaklaşmalarına müsaade ettikten sonra zırhlı süvarileriyle pek sert bir mukabil taarruzda bulundu ve hafif Türk kuvvetlerini geriye doğru sürdü.

Karaca Paşa kuvvetleri ise karşılarındaki Hırvatları yenerek ilerlemeğe başladılar. Hırvatlar genlerindeki bütün ihtiyatları da harbe sokarak bu hücumu durdurmağa çalıştılarsa da muvaffak olamadılar. Hırvatlar bataklığa doğru sürülerek hepsi birden yok edildi.

Jan Hunyad, kendi sağ kanadının kötü durumunu görünce kendi kumandasına aldığı Macar ve Boşnak kuvvetleriyle Karaca Paşa’ya saldırdı. Bu yan hücumu pek yaman oldu. Çok kanlı olan çarpışmada Karaca Paşa şehit düştü. Anadolu sipahileri, yeniçerilerin soluna kadar çekildiler.

Türk sağ kanadındaki Rumeli sipahileri de merkez solla birlikte düşmana taarruza geçmişlerdi. Düşman, zırhlı süvarileriyle bunlara da mukabil bir taarruz yaparak Rumeli sipahilerini geriye sürdüyse de ihtiyatlarını alan sağ kanat yeniden saldırarak Haçlıları püskürtüp takibe başladı.

Düşman başkumandanı Jan Hunyad kendi sağ kanadındaki durumu düzelttikten sonra şimdi bozulan sol kanadını da düzeltmek için Macar kralının yanında bulunan ihtiyat alaylarından birini alarak yardıma koştu. Turhan Bey’in Rumeli sipahilerini geri itmeğe başladı. Anadolu sipahileri de yeniçerilerin sağına çekilip cephe kurdular.

Savaşın buraya kadar olan kısmı Haçlıların lehi ne gibi gözüküyordu. Her ne kadar Hırvatlar mahvedilmişse de Türk ordusunun kanatlarıyla ortası çekilmeğe mecbur edilmiş ve cephe, padişahın yedek kuvvetleri olan yeniçerilerle kapıkulu sipahilerinin önüne kadar gerilemişti. Fakat buna mukabil Türkler’in lehine de şu durum vardı: Haçlıların bütün kuvveti savaşa sokulduğu halde Türkler’in kapıkulu askerleri henüz yıpranmamış bir halde ihtiyatta idiler. Bundan başka yıpranmış düşman kuvvetleri Türkler’in meşhur kaz kanadı tabiyesinin karşısında idiler.

Düşman, Türk hattının iki yanına çekilmiş olan Rumeli, Anadolu sipahileriyle azap ve akıncıları galiba tamamıyla bozulup bitmiş sanıyordu. Bunların varlığını hiç düşünmeden yeniçeri ve kapıkulu sipahilerine yüklendi.

Bu kuvvetin önünde hendekler açılmış, engeller yapılmıştı. Jan Hunyad, Macar kralının yanındaki alayları, son ihtiyat olarak, katî netice anında savaşa sokmak istediği için bunların kendisinden emir beklemelerini söylemişti. Fakat bu alayların kumandanları savaşın Türk karargâhı önünde cereyan etmekte olduğunu görünce askerliklerini unutup kraldan savaşa girmek müsaadesini istediler. Kral bu müsaadeyi vermek yanlışlığını yaptı. Düşmanın son ihtiyatı da yeniçerilere taarruz etmek için atıldı.

Türkler, düşmanın bütün kuvvetleri harbe girince katî dakikanın geldiğine hükmettiler. Yeniçeri cephesinin merkezi biraz geriye ricat ettirilerek kaz kanadı tabiyesi tatbik olunmağa başladı. Düşman, Niğbolu’da olduğu gibi bir yarım çemberin içine girdiğinin farkında değildi.

Bu sırada kendi sol kanadının da durumunu düzeltip kralın karargâhına gelmiş olan Jan Hunyad, kendi emrine aykırı olarak son yedeklerin de savaşa girmiş olduğunu gördü ve başkaca yapılacak bir işi olmadığı için Haçlıları şiddetle ve üç defa hücuma şevketti.

Haçlılar Sultan Murat’a saldırıyor, Türkler Macar kralını yakalamak istiyorlardı. Türk karargâhının önünde pek çetin bir boğuşma oluyordu. Bu arada Sekban başı Yazıcı Doğan da şehit düştü. Büyük bir yiğitlikle saldıran Macar kralının atını Rüstem adında bir Türk askeri balta ile devirdi. Kral öldürüldü. Koca Hızır adında yaşlı bir asker kralın başını kesip bir mızrağa saplayarak mızrak ucundaki bozulan antlaşmanın yanına dikti. Zaten yeniçerilerin yanında bulunan Anadolu ve Rumeli sipahileri de kaz kanadını kapayarak düşmanı çember içine almışlardı. Gece basarken Jan Hunyad Romenlerle birlikte Şimal’e doğru kaçabildi.

Ertesi sabalı (11 ikinci teşrin) 1444 düşman karargâhında tutunmakta olan küçük düşman birliklerine taarruz olunarak kumandanları Kardinal Sezarini başta olmak üzere hepsi kılıçtan geçirildi. Kralın 250 araba tutan eşyası zapt olundu.

Hunyad’la birlikte kurtulan dört beş bin kişilik kuvveti Davut Paşa iki gün Tuna’ya kadar kovaladı.

Varna meydan savaşı imha savaşlarının en güzel örneklerinden biridir. Baştan sonra kadar iyi idare edilen bir savaştı. Hareketlerini gizleyerek düşmanı gafil avlayan Türk Ordusu, bu savaşla tarihimize çok şanlı bir yaprak yazmıştır. Jan Hunyad’ın kumandanlıktaki ustalığı ve Macar atlılarının zırhlı olduğu düşünülürse bu zaferin değeri daha iyi anlaşılır. On beşinci asırdaki zırhlı süvariler bugünün tankları gibi önüne geleni süpüren yaman bir kuvvetti. Türkler böyle bir kuvveti imha etmişlerdir. O korkunç kuvveti yenip yok eden İkinci Murat’la Türk ordusu kutlanmağa lâyıktır.

Başta İkinci Murat, sonra Karaca Paşa olduğu halde o savaşın bütün şehit ve gazilerini saygı ile analım. Üç yıl sonraki 10 ikinci teşrin, bu zaferin 500. yıldönümüne rastlayacaktır. Milletçe bir tören yapmak ve İkinci Murat’ın heykelini dikmek için şimdiden hazırlansak büyük bir değer bilirlik olmaz mı?

Cheap Backpacking: Random photo from my trip to Bulgaria. A real case of WTF??

This is a continuation from my last blog below on cheap backpacking in Varna / Golden Sands (Bulgaria). The last post covered topics such as the cheapest accomodation, the cheapest drinks (free), cheapest entry into night clubs, the cheapest accomodation, the cheapest transport, and scams to watch out for!

In this blog I will cover how to eat from an extensive all you eat buffet for 1 Euro, the cheapest place to exchange money, and plenty more!

By chance, me and my German friend were walking past the Grand International Casino recently and heard a promo from the loudspeakers telling us why we should come in and gamble our lives away.

But despite that, there was a diamond in the rough. The casino also invited us into its laire by promising 1 euro for an all you can eat buffet lunch and dinner.

Being experienced travellers, needless to say, we were a little skeptical.

But we thought, what the hell, its 1 Euro / 2 leva. Given that you have to spend a minimum 20-30 leva for a filling meal in Golden Sands we thought we may as well give it a go.

So we rocked up for lunch the first day – and boy where we in for a treat! Our cynicism was completely wasted on this place.

It was the biggest, most delicious buffet my eyes had ever landed on. I felt like I was in Asterix’s village feasting at one the banquets!!

It was all you cna eat and we had a choice of 7 salads, 4 different kinds of meat (chicken, beef, pork, rabbit) local dishes like mousaka, soups to choose from, sausages to choose from, fries, fruit, and of course desert cakes.

It was to put it bluntly, spectacular.

So how do they pay this you may ask? well the catch it that they hope that you will spend money afterwards or before and not leave the casino – just spend all your time there, living in their ohtel, losing your money at the casino, eating, smoking, whatever you want – they’ve got it.

But that didnt work on us, we just went in their every day and had lunch and dinner

What you need to know: You need to bring your passport, as with all Bulgarian casinos the first time you enter, so that they can give you a membership card. After that just bring your card. Lunch is between 1-3 pm and dinner is 10pm – 12am. The Casino is called Grand International and is on the beach. Writing about it makes my mouth water again…mmm….

You might think that that was the only good thing the Casino is good for, but you would be wrong!

They make so much money from the gamblers that they can also afford to give you the best exchange rate on your money.

You need to be especially careful in Bulgaria (Varna / Golden Sands) because there are a lot of dodgy going ons.

So let me tell you what to avoid before telling you the one place which is best because you may not always be near it when you need it.

In the city part of Varna, there is usually an exchange shop every few meters, in addition there are also old men who come up to you on the street and try to harrass you (and in some cases follow you) to try to get you to exchange money with them.

These people use two main tricks to screw you. First of all, they will give you an excellent rate – the problem is, that they money is the old Bulgarian currency which is absolutely useless!! The other trick they have is that they do give you a good rate but when they are counting out the money they do a funny bugger sleave trick and screw you sideways. This happened to a friend of mine, and despite the thought of being screwed side ways, he was quiet angry when he checke dhis money 2 days later and realised he couldn’t go back to that man.

The second group of hucksters call themselves an exchange office and advertise a high, seemingly fair rate. The problem is the fine print. The rate they advertise means absolutely nothing but they make it close enough to the usual exchange rate to make it seem realistic.

When you ask for an explanation of what the text with the asterix actually means, they point to a wall with even more confusing language in tiny print, which leads to most people to just be like ‘what the hell i’ll just trust them this is too hard to be bothered’.

Which is exactly what I did. But then when I gave over my US$50 and went to sign the form I saw the ACTUAL RATE which is was absolutely pitiful!!! So Isaid if this is the actual rate, im not signig this, but the pushy woman was like no its too late, you’ve already given me your money and the camera recorded it and i’m not giving you your money back.

I stupidly believed this and got 57 leva for US50 instead of US69. And I didnt realise how muych I should have gotten until I went to the exchange place next door and asked how muchbt ey would give me for US50.

Boy was I pissed, I was looking around for the police and asking the locals (most of whom were not interested in helping). Then I came back and another American guy justy got ripped off and wanted his money back. So we both just stood there for 5 minutes until we would get out money back. She wouldn’t budge but then this guy had to go so our little sit in collapsed (despite making the evil cow visibly uncomfortable).

I was fuming >:(

Any how, if you need to exchange money and the rate seems slightly better than the one next door – check – because they may be crooks!!

So if you are in Varna and not near the Casino I recommend Banks or exhcnage palces which have Western Union affiliated with them. Always ask how much they will give you for a set amount of money and shop around, before making the exchange.

Which brings me back to the Casino in house exchange.

The Casino is the only place that actually does not make a profit. It has no fees and gives you exactly what your currency is worth. They will even withdraw it from your credit card for no fee.

The only catch? it must be a minimum of 200 Euros, so best get it near the start of your trip.

Varna / Golden Sands is perhaps the undiscovered Majorca of the Balkans. The big difference: if you follow the tips below, you can have a truly cheap backpacking experience.

TRANSPORT>TAXIS/BUSES
You have to be very wary when getting into taxis in Bulgaria because the government does not regulate or check that the meters are working properly. Because of this there are many taxi companies which have rigged meters and charge insane amounts.

The only two companies with good reputations in Varna are Lacia (with 500,000 written on the side, or Omega taxis). For a trip from Varna center to Golden Sands expect to pay 25 leva (12.5 Euros) with these brands. If you get one of the other brands expect to pay 80-100 leva (50 euros). I have had friends who had the unfortunate experience of being fooled by these guys, and if you refuse to pay the exorbitant amount, you may find that they threaten violence.

The cheaper and much greener alternative is to catch a bus to Golden Sands for just 3 leva (1.5 Euro)- bargain!! Buses going there include numbers 8,9,109,209,409.

Once you get on the bus be careful of the ticket lady (or man) who sometimes tries to give you the wrong change and will run to the other end of the bus to avoid you confronting her!! (it happened to me several times, but only with one woman)

Accomodation
There are two main cheap options here.

The first is to go to a hotel in Golden Sands (I recommend Hotel Vladislava as the cheapest and most happening,on the main strip and above Alarma night club). With a friend, you can get a double room for 15 euros per night – if you know how to ask!.

This is how.. leave all your luggage outside with your friend and go in and ask to be shown a room. They will usually say 18 Euros per night each. Ask them to request a better price from the manager because you are staying at a hotel nearby and will only move if they match the other hotel’s price of 15 Euros (with buffet breakfast). My German friend and I scored this in peak season! At other hotels you can expect to pay upwards of 30 euros per night.

Another nice thing about staying at this hotel is that a lot of the guests are young Germans who have come on a package deal. As part of this package deal they often get a red wrist bad which allows them to have unlimited FREE drinks at the bar downstairs for a few hour per day and an entry gold card which allows free entry to all the night clubs (which usually cost 5 leva each to get in!).

The great thing about this is that they often only stay for a couple of days, and when they leave are usually happy to leave both items to you if you ask nicely!!!

The other option which is especially suitable if you only speak English is to stay at a hostel which is just outside of town called X Hostel. It is only 10 Euros per night for a bed (sometimes cheaper) includes breakfast, and has an amazing atmosphere (I stayed here for 2 weeks – my longest stay in a hostel ever).
For 1.6 leva you can catch a bus to Golden Sands from here and is great for meeting people, as opposed to the hostels which can be socially isolating.

The only catch is taking a taxi back. Ensure you agree on a price before getting in the taxi and don’t pay more than 20 leva. You will be hard pressed to get a better price than this. I’ve bargained like crazy and they all have an agreement it seems.

Except…for the taxis which have come from further away and are dropping someone off here. If you are lucky enough to find one of them in a side street bargain 15 leva or less.

With its rolling meadows and streamside location, the patch of undeveloped land on the southeast corner of the Lower Creek Road and Pinckney Road intersection is a haven for nature lovers.

Its preservation will now be assured in perpetuity, thanks to a partnership among the Finger Lakes Land Trust, the Town of Dryden and landowner Beth Campbell, who donated 12 acres to the town for use as a conservation area.

Campbell, who lived for many years in a farm across the road from the property, has long welcomed walkers onto her land, and maintained mown paths and trails for their use. Wanting to ensure it was protected for future generations, she contacted the Land Trust, which helped her connect with the town to establish the Beth and Gordon Campbell Natural Area, in memory of her late husband.

The parcel features more than 1,100 feet of frontage on Fall Creek and several marshy ponds in addition to the meadows.

Dryden Supervisor Mary Ann Sumner said it will likely be kept close to its present state, with little development beyond a potential parking area.

“Campbell Meadows is a beautiful and important riparian zone,” Sumner said. “We’re proud to be entrusted with its stewardship and we look forward to making it available for town residents to enjoy its natural beauty. It’s such a perfect piece of land for us.”

The Campbell acquisition represents the Land Trust’s second partnership with the Town of Dryden and its sixth completed project along Fall Creek.

Two years ago, the organization facilitated the Town’s acquisition of 52 acres of woodland in Varna donated by the estate of Louise Parke-Dabes. The Land Trust has also partnered with the Village of Freeville to secure approximately one mile of additional frontage upstream from the Campbell plot, and Cornell Plantations maintains another protected property downstream.

“The gift is significant in itself, but we are particularly excited because it adds to a growing belt of protected land along the creek,” Land Trust Executive Director Andrew Zepp said.

Undeveloped lands along Fall Creek have been identified as a priority for protection due to their value as rich habitats for fish and wildlife, recreation and educational areas, as well as the role they play in helping to maintain water quality within the largest tributary to Cayuga Lake, Zepp said.

Established in 1989, the Finger Lakes Land Trust has permanently protected 11,000 acres of significant open space lands through direct acquisition and conservation easements — permanent legal agreements that limit future development while allowing the land to remain in private ownership and be used for agriculture and forestry. Donors can benefit from both state and federal tax incentives.

Administer society. Uphold dharma, righteousness.

Do materials interest you ?
Gadgets engage you ? producing things attract you ? creating objects makes you happy ?

Then you may handle things like a vyshya.
Go on, set up business. Produce things for society.

Do you venerate personalities, identify with heroes, enamoured with film stars, adore cricketers, want to live their lifestyle ? Emulate people ? Seek guidance from others? Want to model yourself on another ?

Then you seek to ‘experience’ life, emotions, feelings, taking cue from others, like a sudra.

Accept as role models persons of true worth, not mere pomp and show. Choose those whose aim is to benefit society, not their own selves. Choose those who have realised brahma, those who upholds dharma and those who produces things for society. 
And help them in benefitting society.

Every person is a dynamic, growing, living, being. As a person grows, his outlook on life changes and his interests change. As one feels drawn to new aims, he should pursue them and actualise karma.

Il sistema delle caste, formalmente abolito, ma assai radicato nei paesi di cultura hindu, fra cui l’India, potrebbe essere presto inserito dall’Onu nella lista delle violazioni di diritti umani. Durante la 12/a sessione del Consiglio delle Nazioni Unite per i diritti umani (Unhrc), in corso a Ginevra, è stato discusso un documento in cui si prospettano le linee guida per l’eliminazione delle “discriminazioni basate su lavoro e discendenza” – così è definita la questione delle caste – che riguarda 260 milioni di persone dell’Asia meridionale. La proposta di trasferire nel 2010 il dibattito all’Assemblea generale dell’Onu ha ottenuto l’adesione della presidenza svedese dell’Unione europea, dell’Alto commissariato per i diritti umani dell’Onu e del Nepal. Proprio la posizione di Kathmandu rappresenta una novità significativa rispetto al passato. Il paese himalaiano infatti, dove l’80% dei cittadini è di religione hindu, è il primo della regione ad ammettere apertamente che il sistema delle caste, che persiste in molte società, è discriminante. “Siamo favorevoli all’idea di coinvolgere organismi nazionali e internazionali per combattere questo tipo di discriminazioni”, ha dichiarato il ministro per l’Amministrazione generale nepalese Jeet Bahadur Darjee Gautam. Il ministro ha poi detto che le linee guida del documento sono “utili strumenti per combattere questo flagello” ed ha infine espresso la speranza, con evidente riferimento all’India, che “altri paesi seguano l’esempio”. L’India però, come fatto in passato, si è rifiutata a Ginevra di assimilare le caste alla discriminazione razziale. Anche se la costituzione indiana del 1950 le ha abolite, il sistema, fortemente legato alla tradizione hindu, è radicato ad ogni livello della società, penalizzando e condannando alla povertà gli appartenenti ai livelli più bassi. Risalenti a 2.500 anni fa, le caste sono principalmente quattro: Brahmani (sacerdoti), Kshatriya (guerrieri e nobili), Vaishya (agricoltori e mercanti), Shudra (servitori, artigiani impuri, orafi, carpentieri). A queste si aggiungono i dalit, gli schiavi, che sono considerati fuori casta. Anticamente le caste erano mobili e le persone venivano definite dal mestiere. Preoccupati per l’eccessiva mobilità sociale i sacerdoti stabilirono che i Brahmani derivavano dalla bocca del dio Brahma, gli Kshatriya dalle spalle, i Vaishya dalle anche e gli Shudra dai piedi, e che alle caste si apparteneva per nascita senza possibilità di cambiamento.

Os PCs da campanha de Gautama são os rajkumar, príncipes aparentados (filhos ou sobrinhos) do Rajah Pandu, responsável por uma região que fica no noroeste do continente. Como é o costume local, o rajah divide seu reino em províncias administradas pelos rajkumar. A área onde se passa campanha foi recentemente adqirirda por Pandu ao derrotar um rajah rival, daí os administradores serem os jovens PCs.

O sistema será o Unisystem e assim os jogadores terão a distribuição padrão para personagens heróicos: 25 pontos para atributos, 20 para Qualidades, 10 de Drawbacks e 35 de habilidades. Quem desejar criar um iniciado tântrico, alguém que se aprofundou no conhecimento do Tantra (normalmente porque nasceu com a capacidade de manipular grandes quantidades de prana), pode optar por uma distribuição alternativa: 20 pontos para atributos, 15 para Qualidades, 10 de Drawbacks, 30 de habilidades e 15 de sutras.

Além das Qualidades e Drawbacks normais do jogo, haverá alguns específicos para essa campanha. Por exemplo, todos os PCs ganham automaticamente uma cadeira no Palácio do Karma. Essa Qualidade significa que os rajkumar são virtualmente imortais. Quando seu corpo físico morre ou é destruído, imediatamente os brahmin do karma transferem as memórias salvas até então para um clone amadurecido rapidamente. Isso, é claro, desde que o príncipe tenha seguido seu dharma e vivido dentro dos preceitos de sua varna (casta). Caso isso não tenha acontecido, ele pode descobrir que foi reencarnado em um chachorro.

Ter um assento no Palácio do Karma é extremamente valioso na decadente sociedade de Gautama. Tanto que é possível que o jogador troque essa vantagem por 10 pontos extras de Drawback durante a criação do personagem. Ele também pode usar a cadeira como uma poderoso elemento de barganha na campanha, mas uma vez passado adiante, o rajkumar não pode mais desfrutar de sua vantagem, a não ser que consiga outra cadeira.

Além disso, graças ao extenso uso de biotecnologia no passado, Gautama é populado por várias subespécies humanas, a maioria engendrada artificialmente para funcionar como servos, como os ganeshitas, os kalamukha e os shaktir. Outras possuem apenas alterações cosméticas ou pequenas diferenças anatômicas, como cores de pele distintas e presença de cauda. Os PCs podem escolher ser destas últimas.

Après une étape à Bucarest en revenant des Carpates, nous avons mis le cap sur la côte bulgare pour deux jours de farniente.  Ainsi, nous avons choisi de nous poser à Varna, troisième ville et premier port de Bulgarie. Ancienne résidence d’été des rois bulgares, puis des apparatchiks sous l’ère communiste, elle est maintenant la capitale de la riviera bulgare.  Nos activités se sont principalement résumées à se reposer sur la plage, à se baigner et à siroter des bières aux bars…..de la plage. De plus, nous avons profité de la gastronomie locale et en particulier des spécialités à base de yaourt et du kavarma. Sorte de ragoût avec des légumes et des oignons, le kavarma peut être à base de porc, de poulet ou voir même de poisson. Enfin, nous avons aussi déambulé dans les rues piétonnes du centre pour constater que Varna est une ville fort agréable.  L’une de ses particularités est d’avoir un parc, le jardin maritime, séparant le centre de la plage. En clair, Varna est une station balnéaire idéale pour la plage et faire la fête. Qui plus est, les filles y sont vraiment très jolies. Certains d’entre nous ont même eu la chance de cotoyer la mafia locale à l’Xtravaganzza, l’un des clubs de la plage.

Irmão Alexios é um pirata.

Com grande tristeza, o Abade de Santa Bárbara recebeu-me a mim e ao meu Magistrado nos seus aposentos privados. Contou-nos a história de Alexios. Um peregrino que alegara fugir dos servos do Rex Mundi, procurou e encontrou asilo entre os monges. Após anos de calmo serviço, partiu e tornou-se pirata.

Irmão Alexios parece ser famoso entre os marinheiros e infame entre todos os cidadãos do Império Romano do Oriente. Eu soube assim que o Abade disse o barco que ele comandava, o Axeinos.

O capitão do Axeinos – ou seja, “Abel Sandor”, “Irmão Alexios”. – foi um dos principais responsáveis pela vitória do Império Búlgaro contra a Imperatriz em Nova Roma durante o Cerco de Varna no ano 1201 R.M.

Para vencer, os búlgaros precisaram de construir engenhos de cerco impossíveis, investidos com a Palavra. O Axeinos roubou essas peças à Magistratura e ao Império Romano do Oriente e vendeu-as ao Imperador Kalojano da Bulgária.
