Greek furniture are known for uniqueness, paintings and art. It is a shame that such little of it has survived such as Mesopotamian. Other Greek furniture that are known for providing beauty such as vases with beautiful carvings come at very high prices. The Greek throughout the history have been well known for their specialities in unique home furniture. Most of the thing they created was meant for beauty.

Though not many people use Greek furniture in their homes today, you can find a lot of it at museums. They are sold in very high prices that not many people can afford them and usually collectors are the ones who are interested in these magnificent Greek furniture pieces.

One of the other lucky pieces that have survived are a few marble stones which are very beautifully designed and rare in this world. It is also known that Greek furniture very much resemble ancient Egyptian furniture. Nevertheless they are very similar to each other but each are special in their own ways. The Greek designs are also quite different than the Egyptian in many ways as well.

The Greek a long time ago had also had these special beds made that are excellent for eating as well as sleeping, unlike the beds we have nowadays of course, they are mainly for resting though. The Greek couch was also made the same way. Of course the Egyptian couches and beds have different functions. They are not like the Greek in any way.

Being the ex-(mad)-scientists we are, we couldn’t help but be very fond of the RGB vase (photo below!!) by Oscar Diaz stirring up warm memories, as it does, of studying with Dr. Dorothea Jameson ( here and here) in another universe long ago and far away.

Unloaded yesterday, which means today is sorting day. The kiln looked nice overall, which means that the ugly things are my fault, rather than something going on with the kiln or materials. It’s amazing how many ways there are to mess up pottery.

Unloading is always a little rough emotionally regardless of how the work comes out. If I get too excited or too down about something either way I end up a wreck. This is my opportunity to practice non-attachment my partner would say. I split up the loading into before and after Korean barbecue to moderate and reward my mental state.

It’s odd that after all these years I still get so wound up about encountering new work of mine. Hopes and disappointments all around. The worst thing is that sorting the work is even harder (which is why I am avoiding it by being here).

Sorting is harder because the day after it comes out of the kiln I have to evaluate it: decide if I should send it out, not send it out, where it should go, who it should go with, etc. I really have to force myself to do this. Evaluating work is Kafkaesque: things look different all the time, and shift with the lens I use to look at them: my lens, the gallery owner’s, the juror’s, the curator’s, one type of owner’s, another type of owner’s. Of course I have to return to my lens as the ultimate arbiter, but these other lenses definitely have a role. This is what it means to make usable objects, and to support myself from making them.

All that aside, there are some really sexy pots in this firing. Here’s a preview:

I seem to have developed a bit of a cough today. I’m hoping it goes no further, as I really don’t want a cold right now. But as I’m feeling a bit under the weather, this week’s posts may end up being photo-heavy/word-light.

Merian and I had been discussing flower vases and such last week, so when she came by on Friday before we all went to see Eddie Izzard, she surprised us with a lovely selection of vases, and lots of tulips to put in them all. It’s been lovely having this bit of brightness to cheer up the place amid all the cold and rain we’ve been having.
Many people may have noticed the beautiful new space opened recently at 5th and Main. It’s called (sub)urban home and it’s the brainchild of LA designer Ronnie Gene. About half of the pieces in the shop are from other designers, and the rest are all designed and produced in-house. I stopped by to check out the situation yesterday and had a great chat with Ronnie. Seriously nice guy with a lot of passion for what he does and a vision for the future of downtown that’s really exciting.

They have some awesome stuff in there, from ceramic skulls to custom, one of a kind sleigh beds. This is such a cool addition to the gallery row area and downtown in general. There are a few other home furnishing stores around the area that really don’t do anything for me, so it’s refreshing to see such great contemporary work in a great space.
(sub)urban home will be hosting a surprise gallery tonight for downtown art walk that will be worth checking out.

Bottom line, the shop is beautiful, the owner is great and they stock some really gorgeous home decor. Go buy something! Go buy a lot of somethings!

Well I’ve had another blast at the glass painting. I actually did them a couple of weeks ago whilst hubby was out getting soaked watching Cardiff City, but I’ve only just got around to taking photos. These will probably be the last that will be ready in time for the Christmas Fair which is a week Saturday. I’m really happy with how these have turned out.

If I get round to it I might paint the last few holders that I have in the next week, but it’s not going to be the end of the world if I don’t get round to it.

Sorry for the lack of post yesterday. We just came from a long nonworking holiday. Today’s post won’t be long either. I’m currently not in the best of health and can barely think straight. Anyway, I made a few Christmas Vases for the house i mentioned a few posts ago. Here they are:

It took a while to finish the last vase. I had to redo it a couple of times. The first one was fairly easy to make. I hope you gather some inspiration from this Christmas vase attempts.

Until tomorrow. See you.

I arrived in Venice yesterday. So after an evening sampling the local food and wine there was just one thing on my mind. I caught the number 41 Vaporetto (water bus) from Fondamente Nove that took me to special island of glass… Murano.

Exiting at Colona I walked down the main street looking in at the shop windows. Within a few meters was CAM showing off the amazing work of Pino Signoretto.

Just down the street I passed Barovier and Toso.

I stopped to admire the window displaying some varied cut vases pictured here…

Within a minute was the mighty Venini displaying some wonderful vases, a new seasonal plate and an incredible glass chicken.

Just before the church is the work place of Paolo Candese.. a lamp worker. I popped into say hello and admire his skilled flame worked pieces.

Taking a right over the bridge was Simone Cendese’ s monster piece. A star shaped mass of different shades of blue the piece consists of hundreds of blown vases a stretching over a meter long.

My next port of call was Campagnol and Salvadore where the Mattia and Marco were busy preparing the studio for the next few days work. Later on I headed over to the Moleria (the cold working shop) of Ferro to pick up a couple of recently made and cut vases of Mattia Salvadore. Here is a shot of one of those fantastic pieces.

Before I dive into this, here’s my experimental image index that is discussed in this post. You can see some sample pages from the text using Amazon’s “look inside” feature.

Background
Over the summer I took a class on indexing and abstracting. As part of my final project, I indexed some of the images of Greek vases in the book The History of Greek Vases, by John Boardman (London: Thames & Hudson Ltd, 2001). It seems kind of quaint to produce a back-of-the-book image index; maybe that’s just because I’m too steeped in digital stuff. Indexes are crucial for print materials, and I know it would have been useful to my art historical research to have the subjects, vase types etc. indexed. However, this probably isn’t the most practical of endeavors. Any good index to the text would probably index image captions, or the locators would at least get you close enough that you could find that one image you remembered that showed Perseus with a detached Gorgon head in hand. This exercise was more just to see what would happen if indexed multiple attributes but proceeded as if I were just creating a traditional subject index to a text. What would the index look like? What would the cross-references be like, and how would the image index differ from an index to the text?

Method and Meanderings
I didn’t index drawings, maps, or photographs of sections of vases; I focused on images depicting vases in their entirety, and on the descriptive information about them that was included in captions. The locators in my index are for page numbers, although each image was numbered in the text. It just seemed easier to navigate to a page than to an image number.

When deciding what aspects of the images to index, I took inspiration from the access points used by the Beazley Archive at Oxford University. Some of the elements by which one can search the Beazley pottery database are:

Fabric

Technique

Shape name

Date range

Inscription type

Inscription

Artist name

Scholar name

Decoration description

Collection name

Publication name

There are even more than that, and it’s pretty impressive. Not all of these categories would be useful for my purposes (a back-of-the-book image index), but several of them (inscription type and vase shape name, for example) are especially useful for various types of art historical research in this field.

I looked at the VRA Core 4.0 metadata schema and noted which of its elements might correspond to those used by the Beazley Archive. The Beazley’s “fabric” element combines VRA’s “cultural context” and “style/period” elements. “Technique” corresponds to VRA’s “material” and “technique”. VRA does have an element for “inscriptions”, but it’s not clear to me if the “type” attribute for the “text” sub-element could be used to indicate the type of inscription (e.g. epoisen or egraphsen signatures). I was mainly using VRA Core as a point of reference, to get an idea of the types of attributes generally deemed important in creating descriptive metadata for images. (at the time, I didn’t know about Cataloging Cultural Objects, but since VRA Core is based on it I don’t see that as a big deal). I also considered the facets of AAT, and what they indicate about elements that can be combined (e.g. style and period).

The attributes I finally chose to index were:

artist name

vase shape

technique

decoration

inscription

subject (both “things” depicted (e.g. warriors) and mythological figures (e.g. Achilles))

I don’t think any of the vases in my sample set ended up having inscriptions. I chose to index only these six elements because I had a limited amount of time to devote to this. If I was indexing images in an online setting I would definitely want to use more access points.

It was difficult to differentiate between imagery that could be both a subject and a decorative element. Many of the vases I was indexing were decorated with rows of animals in a repeating pattern. This is a common motif, so I needed to decide on a policy for how to index it. At first I was making very specific subheadings indicating the type of vase on which the pattern was appearing, but then I realized that this was creating too much work, and it probably wouldn’t be all that useful. It was also starting to conflate the “fabric” and “technique” elements with the “subject”, and I wanted to keep them separate in hopes of having a less chaotic index.

So, for a vase that had a motif of lions in a row, I decided to just give the locator after the heading (“lions, 30-31”). However, if there was a vase with a lion in any other, non-decorative context, I made a more specific subheading (“lions – being hunted, 20”). I worried that it would be confusing to have some locators listed after the heading, and then a subheading with more locators. So I decided that if any subheadings were required, I would instead list the decorative appearances of the subject with the subheading “as decorative element”. Hopefully more examples will make this clearer:

Sphinxes were only used as decorative elements in the vases I indexed. So the entry for sphinxes is:

sphinxes, 20, 33, 41, 45, 46

Lions were used as decorative elements on some of the vases, but sometimes they were part of the narrative scene. So my entry for lions is:

lions
 being hunted, 20, 23, 30-31
 as decorative element, 29, 33

Problems / Discussion
Many of my locators appear multiple times within the same entry for a couple of reasons. First is the fact that one page could contain multiple images of different vases with the same subject matter, technique, or fabric. Second: most vases have multiple sections of varying imagery. I may have been indexing too deeply, but I thought that failing to index all the different aspects of the subjects depicted would be akin to giving the researcher a list of undifferentiated locators. A good example of this is the heading for “warriors”. Since I was creating a heading for “hares – being hunted by warriors” it made sense to have “warriors – hunting hares” instead of just listing all the pages for warriors. Why not give the user as much information as possible? Additionally, my entry for “hares” has duplicate locators because in one section of the same vase (on page 33) the hares are a decorative motif, and in another section they are part of a narrative scene in which warriors are hunting them. (confused yet?!)

As mentioned above, deciding to index both “subject” and “decorative elements” caused problems for me when the two were hard to differentiate. I wanted my imaginary user to be able to use the index to find lion freizes and not have to go through a bunch of locators just to find irrelevant images of lions NOT in freizes. But then again, I always expect too much of my information resources.

In hindsight, I think my index would be more useful if I had created separate indexes for each attribute I was indexing. But there are pros and cons to having the index divided by facets instead of in one long alphabetical sequence. One of the books I examined had one index for mythological figures and one for objects that are commonly attributed to specific gods/goddesses (I thought this was awesome). The book I was indexing had three separate indexes: (1) Artists, Groups, and Wares; (2) Mythological and Divine figures; and (3) General (three indexes in a mere 3 pages!). Though it makes sense to divide the index this way, it could lead to confusion if it spanned more than 3 pages. A user could be looking for Odysseus in the wrong index and not know it unless each page was very clearly marked with a header (I think I remember committing this error as an undergraduate). Another benefit to having one long alphabetical index is that it didn’t force me to always differentiate between the aforementioned troublesome decorative elements and subjects, which overlap so often on the same pot.

In real life, it would probably be best to keep the index as simple as possible, only providing sub-headings when the list of locators for certain topic/shape/artist got excessively long. Nevertheless, if my methods in this exercise could be used on a larger scale, the index would be very useful. Of course that’s unrealistic because of how time-consuming it is, and how “everything is online” now. Back-of-the-book image indexes aren’t unheard of, though. I inspected the indexes in the back of Boardman’s book and another book on Greek art. One of them only listed very general topics (“women” or “fighting scenes”). The other gave some sparse subheadings (and I think this one was the better index overall, though neither of them had any “see” references!).

Conclusion
Indexing a set of images in a book is a good way to become familiar with the basic issues of image description and index construction. It requires decisions that appear simple on the surface, but force you to carefully consider the nature of your subject and the needs of your potential users. You’re forced to make decisions about what to index, how deeply to index, and how to best express what you’re indexing…and those are all just as important in the online environment. So this is a good exercise for a rainy day when you need a rest from computer eye strain.

Also, I think it would be interesting to survey scholarly texts in any image-focused field and try to get an idea of how people deal with images in back-of-the-book indexes. Projects for the future!

After complaining to my friend about my sleeping problems, said friend argued that sleep deprivation may be a mark of genius—or at the very least, enhanced productivity. He proceeded to tell me about some “well-known people” who used their extra waking hours to read more books, write more compositions (in the musical and the literay senses), for example.

I’m obviously neither that productive, let alone a genius. This is why, at this time of the night/morning, I’m sharing goodies I’ve come across on that wonderful DIY emporium otherwise known as etsy:

01.

I first saw Joanna Mendicino’s bird planters via Oh Joy!. Enamoured, I decided to check out her other work and decided that even though real squirrels are a bit scary, these ceramic ones are quite lovely.

02.

One of my favorite searches is the very vague triumvirate of “vintage” + “dress” + “pattern.” Of course, such imprecision yields more than a few results, sometimes painful to wade through. There are only a handful of patterned/printed etsy dresses that have caught my eye and (despite the price tag) warranted “favorite-ing”; this one, sold by Denver-based (!) Thrush, is at the top of the list. (By the by, I just imagined Tracyanne Campbell and Victoria Bergsman in similar get-ups.)

03.

Also recently featured on Oh Joy!, Darling Clementine specializes in retro-inspired stationery, in the vein of Shinzi Katoh, Jun Ichihara, and Raymond Savignac. The playfulness of this particular ‘Paris’ set makes me think, once again, of Catherine Demongeot as Zazie. In the metro, bien sûr. Or Brigitte Bardot’s ‘Moi je joue.’ Or, even better, Stereo Total’s ‘C’est la mort,’ which is compiled of the most common French sayings known to the particular Berliners interviewed in a bar.

Apart from a brief statement on how these images (production/use of) are predicated on the notion of an essential Parisian insouciance—OK, joie de vivre—incomprehensible and hence, “unlivable”, by the non-French, I’m in no shape to discuss what, for me, remains unsettling, uneasy about these cards. Maybe you can, though?

That said, good night (morning), and hope for a more thoughtful post soon.

Just got word that there is a big pre-holiday sale at Uptown Glassworks through Sunday, October 25th

Just got word that there is a big pre-holiday sale at Uptown Glassworks through Sunday, October 25th. I don’t know if you have ever been to a sale at Uptown before but when they say “sale” they mean it. This is a great chance to get a jump on your holiday shopping and save money while doing it.

The sale includes one of a kind sculpture work, vases, bowls, platters and even glass pumpkins, my own personal favorite. Be sure to stock-up on the ornaments while you are there are as well. Nothing looks better on a decorated Christmas tree then a hand-blown ornament. They also make good gifts and they are the best to bring to an ornament exchange. I can not believe I am already typing Christmas, just shows how quickly time goes by.

Anyways, the sale is everyday through Sunday, October 25th. Uptown Glassworks is located at 230 Main Avenue South, check out their website here for directions and store hours and they are even on Facebook here.

Thanks for reading…
