(http://www.ayurhelp.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=10932) It has been explained in our earlier

It has been explained in our earlier article how vata affects erection in men. (http://www.ayurhelp.com/articles/ED_vata.htm) . We all know that erection occurs when blood rushes to penis. Every erection problem starts when this blood flow is affected. Vyana Vayu and samana vayu (types of vayu – http://www.ayurhelp.com/2009/11/types-of-vayu.html) help in blood circulation. When smoke is inhaled through smoking the carbon monoxide fumes bind with hemoglobin in blood and reduce its capacity to carry oxygen . Thus carbon monoxide clogs the path of vayu in delivering the oxygen to cells. The carbon particles damage heart valves and reduce its capacity to pump blood. The vyana vayu which is situated in heart gets vitiated and blood circulation gets impaired. Smoking also leads to atherosclerosis or hardening of arteries. Hardening also occurs in arteries of penis. This blocks the blood flow and movement of vayu. This leads to erectile dysfunction. Vitiated vayu leads to premature ejaculation.

Reduced oxygen supply impairs production of sperms leading to low sperm count, increased number of dead sperms and loss of libido. The condition worsens when a smoker is diabetic or has heart problems.

Quit smoking to gain back normal health and vigor

According to the texts of ayurveda vata dosha even though located in intestines it moves through all organs and tissues of body . According to its functions and locations it is subdivided into 5 more types. They are
1. Pranavayu, – moves from external environment into body through sense organs and orifices present in upper part of body. It helps in inspiration, gulping food, hearing sounds and receiving external stimulus etc
2. Udana vayu – Does the opposite of praanavayu – expiration, reflex actions, speech etc. Both prana vayu and udana vayu are located in upper part of body (mainly throat).
3. Vyana vayu – It helps in movement of blood from heart to other parts of body through arteries and movement of food from stomach to intestines and absorption of it. It is located in center of body
4. Samana vayu – It is spread all over body and helps to bring back blood to heart through veins, It helps in digestion ..
5. Apana vayu – It is located in pelvic area (urinary bladder, groin, testicles, etc)and helps in discharge of urine, feces, flatus, semen, fetus, menstrual blood etc. It cleanses the body and keeps the vata in balance.

What is vata? Acccording to ayurveda principles the activities of our body are governed by tridoshas

What is vata?

Acccording to ayurveda principles the activities of our body are governed by tridoshas . Tridoshas keep our body healthy when they are in balanced condition. Disease is the result of imbalance in these doshas. Tridoshas (three dosha)are vata, pitta and kapha. Five mahabhutas (pancha mahabhuta = akasha, vayu, prithvi, jala and agni) combine in pairs to form three dynamic forces called doshas. Vata is made of vayu (air) and aakasha (ether). Pitta is made up of jala and agni (water and agni), kapha is made up of jala and prithvi ( water and earth).

As vata dosha is made up of ether and air, it is light , dry and moves fast. It needs clear spaces to move. Any obstruction in its path causes vitiation and imbalance of doshas. Vata carries other two doshas with it and enables them to function normally. Hence when vata is in balanced condition it keeps body healthy.

Vata governs breathing, movement of muscles, tissues, movement of signals in nerves etc. All movements of body fluids, voluntary and involuntary movements, activities of brain, spinal cord and complete nervous system are controlled by vata. Vata is mainly located in large intestines, pelvic cavity, thighs and bones

How erection occurs

The two chambers of penis (corpora cavernosa,) which run throught the organ are filled with spongy tissue. The corpora cavernosa are surrounded by a membrane, called the tunica albuginea. The spongy tissue contains smooth muscles, fibrous tissues, spaces, veins, and arteries. The urethra, which is the channel for urine and semen runs along underside of the corpora cavernosa..

Due to sensory or mental stimulation, or both, the erection begins. Due to impulses from brain and local nerves the muscles of corpora cavernosa relax and allow blood to flow in and fill the spaces of spongy tissue.

The flow of blood creates pressure in the corpora cavernosa, making the penis expand. The tunica albuginea helps trap the blood in the chambers, thereby sustaining erection. When muscles in the penis contract to stop the inflow of blood and open outflow channels, erection recedes

In ayurveda physiology of erection and ejaculation is described as follows.

Vrishunow basthimedram cha naabhyuuru vankshnow gudam|
Apaanasthaanamantrasthaha shukra mootra shakrunti cha||

The “apaanavayu” one of the five types of vayu is located in the testicles, urinary bladder, phallus, umbilicus, thighs, groin, anus and colon. Its functions are ejaculation of semen, voiding of urine and stools”.

Shushruta explains the process of erection and ejaculation as “ When a man has desire (iccha) to have sex, his response to touch increases ( Vayu located in skin causes flow of signals from skin to brain, thus causing sensation of touch). This causes arousal or “harsha” . Arousal or Harsha intensifies actions of vayu and at this moment highly active vayu liberates the “teja “or heat of pitta. Thus tejas and vayu increase body temperature, heart beat and blood flow causing erection

How Erectile Dysfunction occurs

Erection requires a sequence of events. Erectile dysfunction can occur when any of the events is disturbed. Nerve impulses in the brain, spinal column, around the penis and response in muscles, fibrous tissues, veins, and arteries in and around the corpora cavernosa constitute this sequence of events. Injury to any of these parts which are part of this sequence ( nerves, arteries, smooth muscles, fibrous tissue ) can cause ED.

How vata affects erection

As vata governs nervous system , vitiation of vata can disturb flow of impulses from brain to genital organ leading to loss of erection.

Blood flow in arteries is controlled by vata. Any obstruction in arteries like plaques or deposits disturbs blood flow in these tissues thus causing erectile dysfunction.

Injury is a cause for vitiation of vata. Injury to genital organ viatiates vata leading to failure of erection.

Teja or pitta which gets liberated due to action of vata can be correlated to testosterone hormone. When vata gets vitiated it fails to produce testosterone hormone sufficient to maintain erections

How vata can be balanced to prevent erectile dysfunction

1. Maintain a regular routine. Eat at regular intervals, sleep at regular time and exercise regularly. This is very important to keep vata in balanced condition.
2. Massage your body with herbal oils to reduce vitiation of vata.
3. Avoid unnecessary popping of pills.
4. Sleep for sufficiently long hours in night and avoid sleeping in day time.
5. Say no to junk foods and aerated drinks.
6. Stop drugs, tobacco and alcohol. Addiction to these stuffs vitiates vata and can cause irreversible changes.
7. Reduce stress by practicing yoga and meditation. Reduced stress level balances vata and prevents erectile dysfunction.
8. Use foods such as: warm milk, cream, butter, warm soups, stews, hot cereals, fresh baked bread
9. Avoid cold foods like cooled drinks, ice creams etc. As cold foods and exposure to cold weather increases vata.
10. Deep fried foods like chips, spicy foods vitiate vata. Hence avoid these.
11. Over weight causes vitiation of vata as fat blocks the channels of vata. Weight reduction is very important to balance vata.

In my last blog, I wrote about biorhythms and how they can affect your health. (Just scroll down if

In my last blog, I wrote about biorhythms and how they can affect your health. (Just scroll down if you want to read it.) Today I discuss the Master cycles that occur in nature and how they influence your health and well being. There are numerous cycles that affect us, most of which we are unaware. They are wheels within wheels, as it were. The master cycles are governed by your internal or spiritual senses, or as Deepak Chopra, M.D. and Ayurvedic Teacher would say, your quantum body.

There are three phases that occur from sunrise to sunset and then three more from sunset to sunrise. The times are as follows:

                            6 A.M. – 10 A.M. Kapha 6 P.M. – 10 P.M. Kapha

                             10 A.M. – 2 P.M. Pita 10 P.M. – 2 A.M. Pita

                               2 P.M. – 6 P.M. Vata 2 A.M. – 6 A.M. Vata

If you are not familiar with the Ayurvedic doshas, I will give you a brief explanation. Doshas are the Ayurvedic body type categories and attributes that apply to your body and the master cycles. Everything is related and connected.

A Vata is enthusiastic and vivacious by nature. Thin physique. May have difficulty falling asleep and sleeps lightly. Has an active and imaginative mind. Learns quickly, but also forgets quickly. A

Pita is precise and orderly. Can anger easily. Is uncomfortable if a meal is skipped or late. Fond of cold foods and drinks – loves ice cream. Has a sharp intellect and articulate in speech.

A Kapha gains weight easily and loses it more slowly. Is calm, not easily ruffled. Must get at least eight hours of sleep at night. Is uncomfortable in cool and damp climates. Has very good stamina and physical endurance. Has a steady energy.

Now you can take a written quiz to determine which is your dominate doshas. I administer these in my healing practice. (www.deborahmdiamond.com)

These same attributes are attributed to the cycles of the day. So, 6 – 10 both A.M. and P.M. are slower rhythms. That is why you are slower, calmer and more relaxed when you first get up in the morning and start to wind down naturally in the evening.

The Pita cycle is when you are naturally most physically active. Hunger comes in the middle of the Pita cycle around noon. As Pita is responsible for metabolizing food, it is good to eat your largest meal (if they vary) at noon. At night Pita appetite’s is not as strong, but it will digest your dinner and keeps you warm at night as you sleep and helps regenerate your tissues. Pita is the fire element.

The first Vata period begins at 2 P.M. and it controls the nervous system. Research shows that people do best on tests in the Vata period, and can add fastest than, also. Interesting isn’t it? Now at night during your Vata sleep cycle instead of “thinking” it assists in a deep dream cycle REM (rapid eye movement).

So, in Ayurveda the perfect day to correspond with nature’s cycles looks like this.

Rising: 6-8 A.M. Best to rise one hour before the sun comes up so that you have time to meditate, do some Yoga postures, and deep breathing. Dawn is a very receptive time of day to connect with the natural rhythms and open your psyche to higher levels. During this Kapha period your body and mind is also calm and relaxed. It is my favorite time a day. Eat breakfast. Sit quietly for five minutes and walk lightly five to fifteen minutes to aid digestion.

Lunch: 12 – 1 P.M. when the digestive fires are burning their hottest and not coincidently the sun is the highest in the sky! Sit quietly for five minutes after lunch and walk lightly five to fifteen minutes to aid the digestion. Later in the afternoon, take some time to sit quietly and/or meditate.

Dinner: 6 – 7 P.M. Eat a moderate meal. Sit quietly for five minutes after lunch and walk lightly five to fifteen minutes to aid the digestion. Dusk is another very powerful time of day. I like to sit and watch or feel the sun set. It is very calming and connecting for your body, mind and spirit.

Bedtime: 9:30 – 10:30 P.M. Light activity in the evening and to bed at least three hours after your dinner.

Now, I imagine you are thinking. “That’s not my schedule!” And I can relate. I have an 8:00 P.M. dance class on Wednesday nights! One of the reason’s I bring this up is that our society is suffering from an all time high of insomnia, stress, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Humans are the only species, a famous drummer once said, that can intentionally get out of rhythm with the greater cycles. Ever notice how crickets chirp in harmony at night? They synchronize. Ever notice how birds and other insects do a call and response. One bird will do a call and another will respond. If you are good at bird calls, you can mimic a call to a particular bird in your area and listen closely, sooner or later, you will hear a response! This is all part of the synchronization of life cycles.

People today are more out of balance than ever before! Once you begin to re-entrain with the natural rhythms, you will start to have more energy, be calmer, and therefore happier and healthier. And consequently, learn your dance steps easier! You will be riding the current instead of paddling against it. If you have ever fought a head wind, or paddled up stream, you know how exhausting it is and how little progress you make! The exact same principle is applied here.

So, how to do it in a modern world? I have found for myself that the morning time is the most important. Set the tone of the day with the meditation, yoga, or your own form of stretching, or exercise, and breathe work. And, yes, I don’t always want to get up at 5 or even 6 A.M., but I am always grateful when I do. Honestly, I am just more cheerful! Now, you gotta plan for the meals and with our insane schedules, meals are falling low on the priority list. Fresh organic vegetables, grains and meats is the best. Pick more conscious restaurants. Prepare several meals on Sundays to get you through the first part of the week, then, take another evening or morning to prepare for the rest of the week. Best not to eat food more than three days old, as it loses too much nutrition the older it gets. In other words, the food’s life force diminishes and therefore yours also. Imagine how much life force is lost in packaged and caned foods that are months on shelves before they even reach the grocery store!

How to begin? First step is becoming conscious of the cycles. So, that one is out of the way. Second step is to commit to do something to improve your connection to the master rhythms, and the third step is to do it! You will be very grateful once your body readjusts. A good reference is Deepak Chopra’s book, Perfect Health. Give it a try. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Please write me on how you are doing.

A Pita is precise and orderly.

Vata, kroppens prinsipp for kinetisk energi, styrer all bevegelse i kropp og sinn.

Some of you might have wondered why we are told to sleep on our left during the pregnancy, while for

Some of you might have wondered why we are told to sleep on our left during the pregnancy, while for the rest of our lives, we should be sleeping on our right. During my yoga training and in all of my yoga classes, we were always told to roll over to the right after Savasana (final relaxation pose) unless your blood pressure is low (like me).

I did a little research, and here’s what I found:

Sleeping on the right: You may lower your blood pressure and heart rate, which is good for individuals suffering from heart conditions. Lying on the left side decreases your heart’s ability to function properly.

Sleeping on the left: The reason for this is the position of your liver. When you sleep on your left side, you take the pressure from your uterus off the liver, since the liver is on the right side of your abdomen. Women will see benefits of increased heart function by sleeping on the left side. The heart is able to pump blood better, which allows for better circulation of blood to the vital organs as well as the fetus and uterus.

During the pregnancy, sleeping on the left also improves the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta and it helps your kidneys efficiently eliminate waste products and fluids from your body. That, in turn, reduces swelling in your ankles, feet, and hands.

Apparently, sleeping on the left can be bad for your heart for those who are not pregnant, especially if you are suffering from chronic heart failure. Sleeping on your left side will decrease the sympathetic nervous activity in your body. This activity normally controls blood pressure and the heart rate.

Sleeping on your back is a big no-no when you are pregnant, especially during the 2nd trimester onwards. According to Jodi Mindell, a pediatric expert on BabyCenter:

“During the second half of pregnancy, avoid sleeping on your back, a position that puts the full weight of your uterus on your spine, back muscles, intestines, and the inferior vena cava (the vein that transports blood from your lower body to the heart). Back-sleeping can also put you at risk for backaches and hemorrhoids, inefficient digestion, and impaired breathing and circulation. Lying on your back in the second and third trimester can also cause changes in blood pressure. For some women, it can cause a drop in blood pressure that can make them feel dizzy; for others, it can cause an unwanted increase in blood pressure.”

There’s also a lot of information about sleep and sleeping positions from the ayurvedic point of view that is worth investigating, and you can read about it here. The optimal sleeping positions (and direction and times) varies for each individual’s body type (vata, pitta or kapha).

At any rate, sleep is challenging during pregnancy, and truthfully, I miss being able to sleep on my back. With the help of my Snoogle, I had been sleeping on my left faithfully, and although I do roll on to my back, my body still leans to the left since it is wedged by the pillow. I’m happy to be able to just be able to sleep through the night these days

Vatta

Pitta

Kapha

Vata-Pitta (Pitta-Vata)

Vata Kapha (Kapha-Vata)

Pitta-Kapha (Kapha-Ptta)

Vat-Pitta-Kapha

Algunas características de cada tipo metabólico son:

Constitución típica VATA

Delgado y liviano
Mente activa, creativa y sin descanso
Patrones variables de dieta y sueño
Venas y tendones prominentes
Tendencia a tener piel y cabello seco.

Digestión lenta Pelo ondulado, grueso y graso
Sueño prolongado y profundo
Modos delicados y tranquilos

Today was one of those days. The energy seems strong. I have been so productive, creative and on the go!

I keep waking up between 3 am – 4 am, writing, praying doing whatever to not get frustrated with waking up so early. This morning, I woke up at 3:15 am, and then I was up for a couple of hours. Went back to sleep and woke up abruptly at 9:45 am, only because I had a phone calls this morning that were set up last Friday. I could have slept for another hour at least.

Today started like this. It felt like a panic through the beginning until finally I had to put a stop to my mind yelling “I HAVE TOO MUCH TO DO!”
I was on my computer & phone for hours, and had eaten very little. My breath was shallow and my body felt achy from sitting there too long.
The UPS guy showed up with my package I ordered last week. I was excited to open it to see the helpful things intended on grounding me.
Sesame oil, a Vata (air & ether element according to Ayurveda) oil blend and some herbs. I immediately opened the box, and took out my new purchases. I heated up some water to put the bottle of oil into to.

Away I went with a healthy amount of oil to my head. I gave myself a head massage, then abhiyanga (self oil massage). I was breathing, finally. I sat still without opening my email or doing anything. Quite a task for me!

Took a shower, ate vegetarian lasagna, and went to teach my classes.

When the weather changes like this, I feel like a baby. I need nurturing, warm mushy foods and lot’s of hugs & love. According to ayurveda, the Indian natural medicine (for staying balanced through life’s changes), the weather & elements are always changing. The prescription would be to do the opposite of what’s going on outside us (or sometimes within our bodies) to balance it. Since it was cold and windy and rainy for the first time this season, it was perfect that I used oil to calm my mind & nourish my achy body, and ate warm heavy foods.

The day went so fast, and the only way I could slow it down was to pour oil on me. It’s like when flies get stuck in honey, they slow down. I calmed right down and was able to breathe again.

The effects are still in effect. I still have deep breath and am ready to sleep.

1 Naranja

1 Limón

1 Pomelo o Toronja

4 Kinotos (naranjita china)

1 Mandarina

3 Paltas

3 Tallos de Apio

Cilantro a gusto

Cebolla & Aji picante (opcional)

Sal, Pimienta

Condimente a gusto y a disfrutar!

The 5 elements that create the universal reality (air, space, fire, earth, water) are found within 3 Dosha, bio-energies Vata, Kapha and Pittta, which determine the physical appearance and body functions of the body such as breathing, digestion, escretion, the formation and growth of bones, intellectual and emotional capacities.

Each person has the energy in different proportions. Ayurveda teaches more about themselves by identifying their strengths and weaknesses to adopt healthy habits in the natural rhythms according to each establishment. In effect only when the body, mind and soul are in harmony that perfect health is possible. The diet plays key role in Ayurveda. Foods contain the same 5 elements that make up living organisms and can affect the 3 doshas, paying attention to what you eat. Ayurveda recommends eating according to its own constitution, by eating foods that reduce the power of dominant Dosha.

Knowing your Ayurvedic constitution, you will know what your dosha dominates, and physiology that will allow you the balance through diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle to maintain good health.

Tips for the balance of the 3 doshas (bio-energy).
VATA types should avoid products bitter, pungent and astringent that cause gas.
Sweet substances, acid and salt are favorable.
Vata imbalance needs to relax. The type Vata tends to want to always exceed its limites.Il must therefore devote time to rest, relaxation, massage oils, medicines daily to recharge energy that consumes Vata particularly because of his nervous temperament. He recommends going to bed before 22 hours. Meditation is advised to pacify the Vata Dosha through deep relaxation.

Pitta types should avoid sour, salty and spicy that aggravate the fire, they should instead choose foods sweet, bitter and astringent. Pitta Dosha is intense. He was pacified by moderation. The intense energy and fiery Pitta can burn you if you use them too much. Pitta imbalance moves a lot, is hyperactive. To stay healthy we must then be careful and slow pace. The Constitution Pitta must avoid excesses and opt for moderation. Massage tip: Abhyangam Garshan and 1-2 times per week.

Kapha types should avoid sugary foods, fatty and salty that increase body water and prefer the taste pungent, bitter and astringent. The Kapha constitution should stimulate circulation and eliminate toxins that are stored in the body. It is however recommended that regular massages and exercise and limited sleep.
